What’s the BIFL item that you love but everyone around you thinks is ridiculous?
Hilariously, I've had pink nylons since 1992. I wear them maybe 10 times a year and wash them in the washer. I don't have any idea why they've lasted so long. I have had to mend the toes, but they didn't run. I think they're "hue" brand.

Looking for a wake up light
I believe you need a hub. It's worth getting a hub in the long term anyways if there is any chance you will use the hue system. The go lamp and hub were actually my first purchase and now I probably have around 30 bulbs around the house. They can be expensive but I don't really regret it. It's a powerful system that is cohesive.

What smart home automations have actually made your life easier?
I’m fully into the Hue ecosystem. Back when I started they where the standard, I believe that there may be some great alternative now such as the ikea bulbs. The RGB hue bulbs can dim the deepest so have those in the toilets and hallways that connect to sleeping rooms for those night time toilet visits.

I can share I have had mine since 2013 or 2014 as well. All the originals still work like a charm with both the Hue hub (at my family's house) and my bluetooth setup in my apartment.

We love our Hue system. It’s easy to start within a room, and expand it throughout the home easily. We use it to lower the lights throughout the evening, which brings our energy down for better sleep.

If you don’t implement it into your everyday life then there’s no sense in trying to force anything. I really like Hue products, and if it weren’t so expensive I’ve have only Hue products. Currently I’ve got too many varying brands and it a bit cumbersome.

Yep. My wife and I got our first Hue lights for Christmas right when we were buying our house, so a little over 8 years ago. Now we have them in most fixtures throughout the house and use a combination of the wall switches and the app to control them. We've only had two bulbs die on us, but one of those was an outdoor fixture and I'm pretty sure the bulb wasn't rated for outdoor use, so that's on me. Overall, they're fantastic and I don't think we'll ever voluntarily give them up. Whenever we travel, one of us invariably exhibits some amount of frustration with the "dumb" lights wherever we're staying.

Thanks! Meanwhile after reading reviews I am inclined to buy the 3672 philips which can be operated via their app as everyone agrees the manual operation was a pain. Or maybe Hue Go and a Bridge. But the philips sleep alarm should have a more natural gradual sunrise apparently

Has everything we buy reduced in quality over time? Has anything increased in quality or stayed high quality and durable?
They’re expensive, but I have Hue everywhere now. Just wait for them to go on sale and you can get them for a decent price. It’s a bit extravagant, but I don’t even have to touch a light switch anymore. I have them setup to switch temperature and brightness throughout the day, or by voice. I just say goodnight and it turns off everything, or “movie lights” and it dims certain ones and turns off others.
