Looking for a sewing machine to do patches on a cotton jacket.
Avoid machines that are marketed as being for beginners, as well as the Singer "Heavy Duty". Find an old machine that is made of metal, not plastic. Pfaff, Janome, White and Husqvarna from the 90s are good options. Look into whether your municipal library lends sewing machines, or whether there is a tool lending library in your town.

A free one! Ask around! But failing that, a moderately vintage mechanical machine. Doesn’t have to be super old but an 80s or 90s Janome is a great starter machine. But also a vintage pfaff, husquvana, or most other older models will be great. If you are lucky enough to find, a mechanical Bernina is the best that doesn’t involve a lot of specialized knowledge (like a singer featherweight). Basically any metal gear mechanical machine with a separate bobbin case will be a BIFL Avoid brother machines like the plague

Something you didn’t expect to be BIFL but outlasted your expectations?
A friend in high school was working in the returns at Lowes. Any time something good came back he’d call a few of us to come hurry up and buy it. He sold me a Husquvarna 325 string trimmer someone purchased, used for a couple days, and returned. It was like $300-350 and he sold it to me for $30 in as-is condition. That sucker is still running 21yrs later! I’m hoping to get it to 30yrs so I can say it only cost me $1/yr!

My mom’s old Husqvarna sowing machine that’s a least 60 years old. Today, the brand is probably better known for chainsaws and motorcycles, but their old metal-cased sowing machines from the 1900s are damned near indestructible.

Long-lasting shirt and pants for wood cutting work
A little on the spendy side, but 1620 pants and jackets are very nice. [https://www.1620usa.com/](https://www.1620usa.com/) In some of their products they use NYCO and other tech-y fabrics that are a little stretchy, water resistant, and very very abrasion resistant especially compared to cotton duck fabric. I would look at their Foundation pant before pulling the trigger on something like the durastretch or double knee pants. However, I would also recommend getting coveralls if you're splitting a lot of wood or a pair of those expensive chainsaw pants if you're clearing a lot of trees. They're all about the same Arborwear, or Husqvarna or Stihl, arbortech, treestuff etc.. But they all have that chain stopping fabric that clogs the chainsaw before it can cut your leg. More like PPE than "pants" if that makes sense. I would always wear the Stihl chaps and the integrated helmet/hearing protection/facemask thing if I was running the chainsaw all day.

Gas Lawn Mower Recommendations?
10+ years with my Husqvarna with a Briggs and Straton motor. So far, so good. Just don’t believe them when they say no oil changes. Change the oil. All I have replaced is a pull chord.

Companies with reliable “right to repair” products: can we compile a list?
Most small engine power equipment would fit on this list, Toro and Briggs have significant dealer and part support, and a huge swath of cheaper third party parts. Same for MTD machines. Stihl, Echo, Husqvarna all could fit in this list as well. There are a million brands of generators and other equipment that all use Honda-compatible engines and parts

I look to AGZA for BIFL electric lawn equipment, they make recommendations for commercial use based on durability in real-world testing. Their recommendations for this would be EGO Power+, Stihl AP, Husqvarna Commercial, Makita, and Greenworks Commercial. Of these, EGO and Makita will be the easiest to get and the most affordable. I can also attest that Milwaukee's lawn equipment is very good. They have one of the best electric mowers out there, and my dad and I both have Milwaukee weedeaters that work great

Husqvarna are good machines, yes. That is what I learned on in high school sewing class. Years later when I wanted a machine I found a similar used model on eBay. They are easy to thread, smooth running, and just well built machines.

Which snowblower will last a lifetime?
We live in one of the snowiest parts of the US, and my biggest pieces of advice are: 1. If you get more than 4-6 inches of snow at a time, absolutely do not get a single-stage machine. It will not be up to the task. You will need a two-stage! 2. All high quality machines will need maintenance every so often. If there's a local repair shop, find out what brand they do and don't work on. You don't want to be up a creek later on when you have trouble finding someone to work on your machine. 3. Honda is the gold standard. 75% of all snow throwers up here are Honda. 4. The other 25% is almost exclusively Ariens and Husqvarna. I’ve seen one Toro.
