  You asked about fleece, so I will second Patagonia. I love my Icebreaker full-zip for travel. Merino is self-regulating and crazy comfortable. Now my unsolicited thought: Quince zip up cashmere. They have several options and nearly all are within budget. Travel safe & have amazing adventures!

  Fibre content matters more than anything, so start there. Go for high merino wool or long staple cotton with just a touch of elastane, because anything mostly sythetic will trap odour quickly and feel unpleasant before long. Flatlock seams are worth seeking out since they sit smoothly under a sweater. Single jersey is usually the safer knit because it has stretch without turning the shirt into compression gear... though some shops market it oddly and it can be hard to find exactly what you want Woolx Mia and Icebreaker Siren pieces usually line up with what you're after, and for cotton the older Uniqlo U long sleeve tees using long staple cotton were solid if you can still track them down. Raglan sleeves are useful because they stop the shoulder seams biting under wool layers and they move more comfortably. If fuzz irritates your skin, superfine merino in the 17 to 18 micron range tends to feel smoother than cheaper cotton and it feels more breathable and soft and comfortable and light all at once making it easier to wear under knits.

  What BIFL mistakes have you made?

  I absolutely love my Darn Toughs, have several pairs that I’ve been rocking for years, but with that being said, I only go for specific socks from them. The boot length hiker cushion and full cushion. I am not a fan of their technical socks. In fact I have thrown a few in the garbage before I figured out that I needed to just stick to the socks I already had and knew. Their ski socks are legit painful to wear, and their technical lightweight hikers and cycling socks are about the same. Anything sports related I do Smartwool or Ice Breaker. Ice Breaker ski socks are phenomenal.

  Reasonably priced natural fiber clothing

  I shop on Vinted for clothes because natural fibers are so pricey. Pact are good for leggings and basics, Dillinger, smartwool, and icebreaker for merino, I also have a few 100% merino wool tops by karrimor that I love love love. I found them in a massive clearance sale on sports direct and got four black and four grey tops. But I’d happily buy them again even if they weren’t on sale. Had them for nearly two years now and they look new. The leggings didn’t hold up as well, but I also wore them nearly daily for two years ago. Son de flor make the most amazing linen dresses and I got all of mine exclusively on Vinted for £45-80 each over the last year and a half. It’s probably my all time fav clothing brand. Uniqlo have good basics that are natural as well, and I heard good things about quince but haven’t tried them myself. If you don’t mind bamboo viscose, I have leggings from fishers finery that are ace. The crotch area seams aren’t amazing now that I’ve abused them in the gym and wore them all the time, but they lasted well over a year as well and have pockets! They’re a mid of bamboo viscose, organic cotton, and some elastane, but it’s hard to escape elastane unless you buy 100% merino.

  Merino wool base layers - which are the most durable?

  For base layer I prefer Icebreaker (not a fan of their socks). I’ve been wearing it for 20+ years and still have pieces I bought in the early 2000’s. Including base layer bottoms that have hundreds of hours and many miles in them. The icebreaker I’ve purchased in the last few (2) years seems just as well made to me, although I have not taken the time to really go over them up close to look for issues.

  Merino wool base layers - which are the most durable?

  I have some Smartwool baselayers (the version that is now called “Classic” going on 25 years. The newest ones are 5-6 years. I prefer icebreaker for its fit and shape retention for things like snowboarding or anything more active. Smartwool tends to bag out on me especially since I’m not washing it much because of wool’s great natural anti odor. Once I wash and throw it in the dryer, it gets back to the original size and shape. I don’t have this shape retention problem with Icebreaker no matter how long I wear it for before washing but I usually line dry Icebreaker. My Icebreakers are about 6-7 years old, the newest one being 3. I have not had any durability issues with it but I’m using the Oasis 200 line.

  How do synthetic base layers compare to merino wool base layers?

  Uniqlo heattech is decent for the price. I kept using it during exploration work in just below freezing temperatures. It kept me warm as long as i was moving and dries fast. Outside of work i prefer icebreaker merino base layers though, they are more comfy and feel warmer when you're just walking or doing casual stuff.

  Icebreaker leggings - 125 weight, if you want to go inside and outside comfortably (aka cool-lite). Heavier weights is for staying outside. You can pair it with jogging pants for two layer system under your regular jeans (as opposed to having heavier single layer leggings). (Mons Royale is an alternative brand) I've found the icebreaker pieces that get holes, are the ones without stretch fabric blended into it. Most pieces have this these days, in my opinion it's a problem that's been fixed, & the negative online reviews is an unfortunate climate we live in - only pissed off people write about it online to begin with; most who are satisfied with their product doesn't participate I only wear long sleeves in Merino, a decade after discovering the leggings first. (Undershirt/beater is too hot IMI)

  best brand for winter thermal wear?

  I live in a really cold climate and honestly found that outdoor-focused brands like Icebreaker held up better for me than lifestyle brands. Their heavier weight stuff felt warmer and more durable after multiple winters. Breathability still matters, but warmth comes from density and weight. My best results came from thermals that feel almost sweatshirt-thick, because thin, soft ones never blocked wind or held heat the way I expected.

  Cashmere and merino from J.Crew and Banana Republic cause irritation. Should I try higher-end brands or look for alternatives?

  I love merino, have quite a few t-shirts from Icebreaker. Not all merino is created equal for sure, but some people are indeed allergic. Quince has Yak wool which supposed to be lanolin free and might help. Alpaca is another choice.

  Bombas Replacement Policy: the fine print

  So tired of companies pulling this shit. I used to buy Icebreaker socks because they had a no hassle one time replacement policy on them. They changed it to one year. Icebreaker socks are far too expensive to pay to replace that quickly. Their thick socks last decently well, but the thinner merino socks just aren't durable enough for a warranty that poor.

  Try icebreaker merino wool half zip base layer tops that wear like thin sweaters. I know you said wool can be irritating but these are super soft spun. You can layer them alone, or with a thin moisture wicking layer (turtleneck or crew neck). So soft and non irritating (except for the ridiculous set of tags on the hip area of one side that you definitely will want to remove). They breathe so you stay comfortable and can easily layer.

  Dilling does great merino, pact has good organic cotton stuff, icebreaker for merino, 3rd rock and has organic cotton as well. B.A.M does bamboo viscose clothing, which I normally avoid but they’re quite good and I have a few of their things and they don’t bother my skin at all.

  Looking for a full outdoor winter clothes system.

  I look at it this way. Baselayer - merino for less active, synthetic for more active Mid layer - gridfleece (more active) or merino sweater (less active) Insulation layer - Heavy fleece or down (less active) or synthetic puffy (more active) Shell - At the very least windproof (eg Gore Windstopper) or even better windproof and waterproof (Goretex Pro) You'll also need - high quality headwear, gloves, heavy wool socks (Darn Tough). A muff with handwarmer slots is nice, as well as a fleece gaiter for your neck Brands I like: Icebreaker, LL Bean, Sitka, First Lite, Smartwool, Darn Tough, REI's house brand, Arc'teryx. Maybe reach out to some of these companies, tell them what you do and see if they'll hook you up with a pro discount.

  High quality and soft men t-shirts

  Merino is a great fabric; it's great at wicking away sweat, drys quickly, and is naturally antimicrobial, but I wouldn't suggest it as BIFL. Even the expensive brands can still be a little abrasive. Merino requires more careful care than cotton and it has a tendency to develop holes. That said, seven years on, my Icebreaker merino t-shirts are still going strong with only a few little holes here and there. I just make sure to wash them at 20/30 degrees Celsius on a delicates cycle using a dedicated wool detergent. I would give another vote to Uniqlo t-shirts. I've had their suprima and AIRism t-shirts and they have lasted me years.

  What style darn tough sock do you have and why would you go to bat for it?

  I have a couple pairs of their lightweight Lifestyle crew socks that are tight across the top of my foot, primarily where the foot and leg meet. I’m a size 12.5 US or on the small size of their XL.  I also have one pair of their lightweight hikers that fit ok, but not great.  Their sizing seems to change based on style but my experience with three pairs and two styles is isn’t the greatest sample size. I gave them to my kid who would fall into the upper size of their Large and they fit ok.  I find Smartwool and Icebreaker to have more consistent sizes across various styles. Durability is fine with both in my experience.

  What are some of the best products/brands you love splurging on?

  Less expensive things: Icebreaker Anatomica lightweight merino wool boxers. Bombas merino wool stretchy socks. Merino wool micro weight anything, really. Smell resistant, soft, temperature regulating, etc. Organic produce, dairy and eggs. Moderately expensive: Apple products. Work gives me a new MacBook Pro every few years, and the interoperability of it with the iPhone, AirTags, and Apple Watches makes it worthwhile to put our household on Apple stuff. FindMy is great to keep track of the kids, luggage, cars, etc. It’s pricey, but it just works. Expensive: A Rolex Explorer (sport watch/casual) and a JLC Duo Face (dress watch). Gorgeous, will last a lifetime with regular service. My only luxury purchases, but no one notices or cares. I just love their simple beauty. Not a product: Recreational travel. Life’s not about stuff. Nobody gives a shit. Memories matter. You really do buy them for life. What I never spend on: First class seats, premium credit cards, luxury cars (all Toyota), designer clothes and shoes, private school tuition.

  Right, but being owned by the same corporation doesn’t mean that the operation or production is consolidated. If you grab a smartwool shirt and an icebreaker shirt, you might notice that the smartwool shirt is crazy soft and the icebreaker one has more texture. Icebreaker uses a more natural treatment for the wool and smartwool breaks it down harsher for softness. It’s like the difference between a chrome tanned and veg tanned leather. I also like the cut of icebreaker shirts more. I have both brands but (and I may be wrong on fabric content) but the smartwool is just stretchier and not in a good way. Like I wash them both and my icebreaker fits normal and I have to pull on the smartwool to get it back into shape. I don’t have more than a few shirts from each brand, but I have tried a lot from smartwool and never really liked any of their stuff - it seems and feels “techy” and icebreaker feels like my small business and more heritage wool stuff.

  Duluth Buck Naked is the reason I got rid of all my other underwear. Truly a game changer. Some people mentioned Icebreaker as well - I’ve never tried their underwear but I have quite a bit of their other stuff and it is fantastic.

Sweaters: I wear them as mid-layer in winters under tailored wool coats, makes me look instantly stylish without much effort. I also wear them all thru spring & summer as evening layers.   I've found merino T-shirts really are fantastic, even over summer, not really too hot at all, and even if I get a bit sweaty they seem to dry way better than synthetic stuff. And they seem to VERY naturally anti-odor, sounds gross but I can easily get a couple of days out them before washing. I'll sort of hang them on the side of my washing basket to air out, wear another one, then come back to the other one a day later. Sadly they are a bit more fragile than synthetic stuff, so I don't think it's really going to be for life unfortunately since they are a bit fragile, but it's not bad honestly... I don't bother giving them any babying or special treatment and just wash them like normal with everything else. Main thing is to try and watch out for moths, I had a bit of a minor infestation, so have a few unfortunate holes in some of my shirts. They are a bit more fragile, so catching on something might leave knicks in them. I give them a thrashing though, hikes through the bush outdoors, and I wear them weekly over the last year or two. So current ones have had maybe 50-100 wears, and they are doing alright, nowhere close to retiring any of them yet. I'd estimate I'll get a few years use with pretty heavy use. Primarily Icebreaker ones, but also some other more generic ones from Mac Pac and Torpedo7 (This is in New Zealand). I got them on end of season sale leading into summer for about half the usual price, since I guess people think wool isn't a summer thing. Full price is a bit eye-watering though ~$120NZ, so I avoid that.

My icebreaker bikinis aren’t high rise, and I’ve been washing them in the washing machine and line-drying for YEARS. They are soft, and I find them to be way more breathable than cotton! Cooler in summer too, counter-intuitively…

  Recommendations for Boxer Briefs

  My favorite are the merino wool ones from Smartwool. Icebreaker makes some good ones too, but I don't find them to be as comfortable as Smartwool's. Be careful when buying to get the merino boxer briefs, because they now have a line that's mostly polyester. I think they call them "everyday" or something. I also like ExOfficio. I've been using them for many years. I know that it's often said they don't make them like they used to, and while that is true, they're still pretty good quality. I don't find the give-and-go 2.0 boxer briefs to be very comfortable and prefer the original style. However, for regular boxers, the 2.0 ones are very nice.

  Best shoes to buy???

  I would get some merino socks for starters. Smartwool, Darn Tough, Icebreaker, etc. Then I would get a pair of moc toe boots with a wedge sole. Danner Bull Run, White's Perry Select, Red Wing, Thorogood, etc. The Danners and Thorogoods feel great from the get-go, the others will take a week or two to break-in. I might consider adding a cushy insole if I felt so inclined. Then After a month or so, I would buy a 2nd pair...maybe something completely different - Lems or Xero, zero-drop maybe? I would rotate them. If they have to have safety-toes, I'd probably get another boot with a wedge sole. I work outside on a golf course year-round. I have a locker full of shoes/boots, with more in my car. Like you, I do a lot of miles on my feet. I have a lot of conditions to contend with, however, I am constantly changing my shoes. If my feet start to hurt or I don't have the right shoes on for what I need to do, I change them. I wear a pair to/from work, and might wear 3 different pair in a day. Again, being on my feet all day, I can't afford to have any issues with my feet/footwear. The only thing worse is just being cold and wet all day, lol.

  Icebreaker no longer selling XS men's shirts. What now?

  Suggestion #1 is make a saved search on eBay for every shirt from them you like (and include XS in the saved search) and buy them whenever one pops up that is unused and reasonably priced. I’m not sure how well this will work for shirts but I’ve done it with shoes and backpacks and I’m still occasionally finding shoes still in the box from over 15 years ago. Suggestion #2 is maybe some of their women’s shirts would fit you decently? I’m not terribly familiar with the brand but after a brief browsing on their site they have a couple options on the women’s side that have a neckline and sleeve length pretty comparable to a men’s/unisex shirt. Women’s shirts are typically a bit narrower at the waist but it doesn’t sound like you’re a pudgy guy so it might work out.

  Need crew socks that will last

  I used to have a whole drawer full of Thorlos, but I have switched to wearing wool all year. At first I was buying Smartwool, then I switched to IceBreakers, and finally to Darn Tough. IceBreakers were about as good as Darn Tough but I don't see them around as much. Darn Tough are easy to find, very cushioned, and last for years. I have 6 or 7 pairs and I have yet to wear a pair out in over 5 years.

  Best high quality performance tee?

  I really like the Icebreaker Merino Sphere II Short Sleeve T-Shirt. They aren't cheap, but you can wear them for multiple days in a row without any body odor clinging to them. Wash them after about 5 days in cold water and they will last for several years. And they work well in both winter and the mild summers of Truckee CA.

  BIFL merino wool clothing?

  Value for money is subjective, so check the prices and you decide. But I have a few pieces from these brands, have used them for a few years and have not disappointed. Danish Endurance - socks IsoBaa - socks, t-shirts* and a hoodie Bølger - t-shirts* Decathlon (Forclaz brand) - long sleeved t-shirt* Icebreaker - full zip top Lundhags - full zip top * Relaxed fit, all others are slim or athletic fit. Decathlon and Bølger are a high wool (60%+) blend, with Decathlon probably being the best value for money. The socks are bends as well. The rest are 100% wool, IsoBaa being the nicest feel t-shirts, and Lundhags probably being the warmest for its weight. If you want them to last, never wash them with regular biological clothes detergent. The biological enzymes that are great for breaking down dirt, also break down wool proteins. And you end up with mystery holes. Only ever wash with soap. I just pick up cheap liquid soap for washing mine. It absolutely doesn't need to be a more expensive specialist wool specific product. Most of these are just liquid soap with a scent added, possibly a little lanolin.

  My go to has always been icebreaker , i feel like the quality isn’t as good as it once was, but even the current version is still way better than most others. Additionally if you have a moderately athletic build I find it fits and looks the best.

  BIFL women’s underwear?

  I can’t speak specifically to women’s underwear, but I can definitely make recommendations on wool. **TLDR: merino with a blend of nylon (Wool&Prince) or tencel (Icebreaker)** I’ve been gradually transitioning to merino boxers, and some of what I’ve found: - Wooly which you mention isn’t *bad*, but I stopped wearing that pair because it gets so itchy, and before that it was wearing out faster than most of my others. - Wool&Prince is probably the highest quality I own. It’s a wool/nylon blend, and the stitches are strong but unobtrusive. I expect it to last the longest. I can’t remember if they make women’s underwear, though. - merino/polyester blend is my least favorite. It’s the easiest to care for, but it stretches too much so they’re loose on me now, and surprisingly it shows way more wear than anything else (but that might be a symptom of the brand, Duckworth). - I have two pairs from icebreaker. One is 100% merino, and while it’s surprisingly durable, I don’t recommend it because it shrinks, is hard to care for, and it doesn’t dry as quickly. - my other icebreaker pair, though, is a tencel blend (I think it’s called CoolMax or something) and it’s crazy comfortable. Very few seams (less hot spots) and it dries super fast. It shows basically zero wear after almost two years of at least weekly wear.

  Has anyone found any TENCEL or TENCEL-wool/natural blend activewear?

  My favorite t-shirt is CoolLite by icebreaker. Its a tencel/merino mix. I also like allbirds merino for underwear, and their tshirts. ( But they feel warmer, with more wool and less tencel. The CoolLite feels better in a hot humid, southern climate.)

  Flannel shirts that last

  I 100% recommend Icebreaker flannels. They’re wool, so actual flannel, but not the scratchy stuff you might expect - nice and smooth. I’ve had a few for years now and they look as good as new and feel even better than new. They’re a bit pricey, but can often be found on sale, especially past year models. You wouldn’t regret it.

  Has everything we buy reduced in quality over time? Has anything increased in quality or stayed high quality and durable?

  Maybe their quality has gone down recently, but I have some Icebreaker base layers that are coming up on 10 years old. I only wash it with other wools on the delicate cycle and with wool detergent, but they’re holding up decently well. I also wear them several times before washing to cut down on the number of cycles, but so far so good.

  Unfortunately ice breaker is a total grab bag. My long John’s developed a hole in the crotch after two uses. Sewed it up and after two seasons of super light wear there’s a pull running from the waist all the way down to my thigh. Would never recommend these for the price point. BUT - I have merino tank tops, underwear and socks from them that have held up really well. I wear the merino tanks all year long.

  BIFL Wool leggings and long sleeve undershirts?

  It’s a New Zealand brand, and pretty expensive, but icebreaker does really nice merino wool garments and undergarments. Other NZ brands that are cheaper but would be difficult to buy from overseas would be Kathmandu and Macpac. Icebreaker is the best, but I have merino wool thermals from all three brands that have lasted for 10+ years of regular wear and saw me through 4 years of living in the bottom of the South Island and hiking in Stewart Island

  Looking for lightweight wool gloves for the Pacific Northwest

  I have a pair of [military surplus gloves] (http://www.armysurpluswarehouse.com/clothing/gloves-mittens/wool-gloves-inserts.html). You can find them without the white lettering (edit: if you can't the lettering comes off fairly easily, especially if you wash them), I found them at a local military surplus combination outdoor\hunting store. Nice and cheap. I use them mostly for my work gloves\liners. I recently bought a pair of the [Icebreaker Sierra Gloves](http://www.icebreaker.com/en/mens-gloves/sierra-gloves/101265.html#BVRRWidgetID) as more of an sport-active wear glove, haven't had much of a chance to use it yet though. To be completely honest I don't think you will get a really durable wool glove, every glove I've found has a negative review. I think they are better as a liner. For day to day around town I usually just throw on my cheap lined leather gloves.

  Ibex is a quality merino brand from what I've seen. I'm a big fan of merino in general and I have pieces from Smartwool, Icebreaker, Ibex, and Filson. My favorite shirt is Ibex and I'd say Ibex and Icebreaker are probably tied for the best merino clothing I've personally tried. That said the item you've linked to appears to be a wool/polyester blend. It is mostly wool, but I've never tried any of Ibex's blended fabrics.

  I may have a bit of an obsession. And I cant even find my dark green full cushion boot hikers!

  Their boot cushion socks are second to none but for example icebreaker makes a better lightweight ankle/running sock (also merino wool).
