Brands That Used to Be BIFL — But Aren't Anymore?
Not sure how much truth there is to it, but my father is a big craftsman guy (has a whole chest from the 80s) and these days if he needs something he buys Craftsman made in Taiwan only, or Icon brand from Harbor Freight made in Taiwan. He said that a lot of his older tools are stamped with Taiwan, so he thinks the modern stuff made in Taiwan is the closest to it.

What products used to be well built back in the day but now are low quality?
I would actually argue that this is one area where globalization benefited the consumer. Taiwanese tool steel and manufacturing has basically increased in quality to the point where the differences with American and German brands is almost negligible. Torque Test channel just did a video basically acknowledging that Icon’s new G2 ratchets are virtually indistinguishable from Snap On, with an easier and better warranty. Agree with others that Wera, Wiha, Knipex, and Gearwrench, and Tekton are all solid brands. The biggest issue in tools is that the premium market has gotten out of hand. Companies have learned that there is more profit up market and have really accelerated leaving the middle-class buyer behind. Premium tool brands have popped up left and right to fill this market; they’re often the companies I look at and find cheapening practices. Say what you will about Harbor Freight, but lines like Hercules have really approached the value of the bigger names like Milwaukee, Dewalt, and Makita for a third or less of the prices. Milwaukee’s prices have grown astronomical in several territories.

ICON has the potential to put a big, big dent in SnapOn, Mac, etc. I'm a professional mechanic with tens of thousands of dollars worth of tools and in the last couple years I've been buying ICON almost exclusively. Good quality, great price, lifetime warranty, and I have a Harbor Freight like a 1/2 mile from my work.

Miele vacum, dog blow dryer ive had it for 7 years its amazing egfki saved me months drying dogs. A good cast iron lodge is great. A good pepper grinder unicorn magnum. Electric shaver braun from costco. Icon digital torque wrench changing oil fluids. Good warranty at my store if anything happens

Does anything ever become BIFL?
Harbor Freight’s Icon tools are extremely nice. I recently bought an Icon brakes tool kit that is every bit as nice as the Snap-on one that I had been borrowing from a friend; he even agrees with that assessment. Same thing with the HF Dayton Super Duty 3 ton jack (which has an interesting story about Snap-on suing them and loosing). Ten years ago, I would only buy something from Harbor Freight if I fully expected to have the tool only need to work once or if I had some difficult to access location where I needed to modify the tool to fit. I guess the Harbor Freight US General toolboxes were always pretty decent, but most of the rest were junk.
