Since we’re on the BIFL subreddit I highly recommend a refurbished iPod classic 5th generation. They’re available with (practically limitless, depending on how much you spend) flash storage now and the parts/repair support today is better than ever. 20 years later they still work with iTunes perfectly and will plug into/sync with just about any computer.

You might be able to find an early gen iPod on eBay. They weren't bad back in the day. I assume you'd still be able to connect it to your computer and load some music on it.
