What's the best way to buy digital music for life?
Bandcamp is my first choice for non-physical copies, but second I'll go to iTunes. iTunes has DRM, just not for music, funny enough. I find Bandcamp more convenient and more ethical, but Apple's library dwarfs Bandcamp. CDs are also solid, they just take up more physical space and aren't always easy or cheap to acquire. Very easy to rip the digital files off them to do whatever you want with them. The ripped files don't come with album art, sometimes some of the metadata is missing, so your CD ripping software will have to fill in the blanks. Usually it can do that automatically, but not always. Not if it's a very obscure release. I use "MP3Tag" to manually edit metadata, so my albums have album art and all the proper details for digital cataloging. "CD rot" is greatly exaggerated; commercial grade CDs have a pretty long life if as long as they're not stored in environments with high temperature fluctuation or humidity. Burned CDs aren't quite as dependable though.

Just buy from the iTunes Store. It's been DRM-free since 2010. You'll get 256kbps AAC files that'll work anywhere.

Bandcamp realistically, some artists may also sale their songs on their own sites. Just look around! If that isn't an option, iTunes still is and allows you to download the songs directly as m4a, and with the option to convert to mp3.
