Looking for a sewing machine to do patches on a cotton jacket.
Find one second hand if you can. It will be cheaper. Many sewing machine repair people will refurb and sell older ones. Janome is still a good brand but they are pricey new. Same with Juki. Singer now owns pfaff afaik which means they are fairly similar on the inside (according to my repair guy) so there is that.

Avoid machines that are marketed as being for beginners, as well as the Singer "Heavy Duty". Find an old machine that is made of metal, not plastic. Pfaff, Janome, White and Husqvarna from the 90s are good options. Look into whether your municipal library lends sewing machines, or whether there is a tool lending library in your town.

A free one! Ask around! But failing that, a moderately vintage mechanical machine. Doesn’t have to be super old but an 80s or 90s Janome is a great starter machine. But also a vintage pfaff, husquvana, or most other older models will be great. If you are lucky enough to find, a mechanical Bernina is the best that doesn’t involve a lot of specialized knowledge (like a singer featherweight). Basically any metal gear mechanical machine with a separate bobbin case will be a BIFL Avoid brother machines like the plague

Is the Singer Heavy Duty Sewing Machine Really That Bad?
I bought the model the OP is referring to. I wanted a machine that zigzagged. I had been using my mom’s old machine from 1948. I made over 3,000 masks with it and many project bags & grime guards for my Etsy shop. I would suggest before you get super into a project, try sewing a small piece in the thickness you want to make to be certain the machine will handle it. I have since upgraded to a Janome, but I still pull the Singer out when my Janome is in the shop.

The brands aren't too important, but these are some of my faves. * Vintage audio equipment. 80s Marantz amp and Advent speakers for my pc. * Vintage lamps. Living room lamp is from the 30s while my new Ikea lamp couldn't handle more than 15W and snapped in half just trying to use the damn thing. * A good mortar and pestle. Don't think capitalism was a thing when my oldest one was made. * All-metal sewing machine. I have my great grandma's straight stitch singer and a 70s new home/janome for specialty stitches. * Perennial food and herb garden. My family has been growing and dividing the same rhubarb plant for over 50 years. And rhubarb-anything is the best. * Bonus: Mason jars and rechargeable desiccant for herbs. What’s one item you bought that way outperformed its price?
Mine is a Janome I got 25 years ago. Going strong with moderate use, 2 services from a pro and plenty of routine maintenace from me. An absolute workhorse. Also, made even better by learning more techniques from some lessons/workshops.

What is your most unintentional BIFL item?
I got a Janome sewing machine in 2012 that is still going so strong & even though I really should because you’re supposed to I’ve never even had to get it serviced. I’ve left the light on overnight more than once & that’s still kicking too

What is your current BIFL item you recommend to everyone?
My janome sewing machine. I've had mine for 8 years and it's mended dozens of pants, made countless clothes and quilts. Highly recommend getting a good sewing machine. My grandma had her singer since my father was born in 77, do your research and get a good one.

I've had pretty bad luck with brand loyalty, but... Bosch dishwashers (15 years and counting), Audi (15 years), Janome commercial grade sewing machines (14 years in with no signs of wear and tear. Moderate to heavy use)
