Recommendations for coffee machine - single serve?
If you’re looking for an actual coffee machine, the Jura brand is true BIFL. I’ve had mine for 6 years, my father in law has had his for 15+ years and it’s used daily. His has an odometer on it, tracking the coffees it has made and I believe it’s over 28,000 coffees!! You send the machine back every few years to the company for maintenance. I think if you search “Jura” in this sub you will find other members commenting similarly.

We have a Cuisinart double Belgian waffle maker that we got at a yard sale for $30 back in 2010. It’s been a favorite and always a standby for breakfast. We had 2 of us then, now a 5 person family and that double function is amazing. I think small appliances sometimes have a tendency to move around if they’re reliable enough and a good unlock. Our Dyson vacuum, Jura coffee maker and others just haven’t had any unexpected issues.

If you have hard water you'll be forever changing the filter on any machine because they just have a small filter. We have an under sink triple filter from Bunnings, change the cartridges every 18 months - 2 years. 15 year old Jura machine still going strong.

I echo what everyone has said here, the brew group needs maintenance. HOWEVER, with a clear afternoon and $20 of parts on eBay I was able to rebuild the brew group on my jura impressa machine. That's pretty goddamn BIFL for me.

Seeing you want as little maintenance/hassle as possible, I recommend a Jura super-automatic. You pour in beans, add water, push a button, and *presto* coffee or espresso (or ristretto). Want a latte or cappuccino? Hook up the milk attachment & push a button. It tells you when to add water, when to dump the grounds, when to add beans, & when to add the cleaning tab (once every two months?). I bought a refurbished J80 in 2018. Literally no issues still. My brother bought a nicer version (also refurbished) around 2022. Still raves about it. My sister's husband bought his before they met, so between 2000 & 2009? It's still working great, but they wanted fancier options, so it's the machine at her office now (it, too, was a refurbished model).

If you want easy and BIFL, get a nespresso pixie and one of their milk frothers. If you are going to get a semi-auto machine and grinder - keep in mind that its a hobby and it will be 6-8 months before you start pulling the kind of shots that you're proud of. Gaggia Classic, Profitec, Rancilio, Rocket, maybe Breville here. For grinder - Bartaza Virtuoso or Vario. On the fully auto side, Jura will probs be just outside your price range. Terra Kaffe TK-02 is. I own one (was a gift) and its fine but probably not BIFL.

I was gifted my parents Jura ENA 4 when they didn’t want it anymore. It is now 10 years old and I am replacing it. But, it still works with only rare small issues and would probably not have those if I took better care of it.

As with anything BIFL, you have to be rational about your purchases. A $1000 Jura automatic espresso machine would absolutely meet your needs and give you a better product than anything keurig could ever make, but that’s not helpful if you’re trying to be careful with your money. A lot of people here don’t really understand the BIFL principle which is being able to stretch your purchase as far as possible to reduce waste or the cost of always replacing things, while maximizing the quality you get from a product. Anything that’s more than single-use can fit this principle, from smartphones to cast iron pans.

Recommend to look into super automatic coffee machines. They take a little work of maintaining and cleaning them but they make coffee straight from the beans and water. And the quality beats out any instant coffee or Keurig pod coffee I used to make. I own a Jura and have used the Z10 for almost 1 year now and it’s definitely pricy but worth it.

How do you feel about buying things?
I just used those numbers since I spent $300 on lunch today for 4 of us at a pretty nice place with a drink and dessert. I wouldn't say I'm a foodie but it's a pretty big step up when you're eating at places that are at the very least approaching Michelin recommended or similar. I wouldn't remember a basic lunch but I'll remember the one I had today. They focused on mixing flavors and quality ingredients. The next step up is when you start getting different temperatures and textures in the food. It's not just the taste. When you start combining the location, view, ingredients, textures, tastes, temperature, exotic cooking techniques and ingredients, etc it becomes an experience and event that you really remember. At home we have a nice Miele kitchen with good cookware and it makes cooking so much better. I can also make a better cup of coffee at home with my Jura than most cafes. I'm not really into phone cameras but there is a big difference between them. I make the family photo albums and it's worth having a minimum quality phone camera for everyone at least or the low quality is kinda jarring next to the other photos. I think a better example would be cars though where the technology in them makes a very meaningful difference in the driving experience. There's regular cruise control but then there's adaptive cruise control that can basically drive for you and cars that park for you. There's regular lights and then like 4 different types of high end lights that really help with night time driving. I get annoyed when a car doesn't have auto windshield wipers and auto high beams. It's worth automating as much as possible. I'll prioritize the vehicles safety record and quality control and then deck out the features.
