I also got my old lady cat a k&h self-heating pad maybe five or six years ago. She’s 20 now and gets cold very easily, so we now have four of them in her favorite spots. They stay plugged in at all times and are all still working well.

We bought a K&H Cuddle Up Heated Cat bed in 2009 and a second one in 2012. Both are still working and they stay plugged in all year. We put a blanket or towel on top of the bed folded in half because it is easier to swap out to wash and because multiple cats have actually gotten too warm without it. We also bought a K&H thermo-kitty heated mat in 2021 and that one is plugged in throughout the winter months and still works.

Cheap internal thermostats are what kill most of these. They click on and off all day and cook the wiring until something gives. For something that runs all winter, the guts matter more than whatever logo is printed on the cover. Look for silicone insulated wiring. PVC gets stiff in a cold room and cracks early. A pad that uses a PTC heating element tends to survive longer because it self regulates instead of depending on some flimsy bimetal switch. A removable fleece cover helps more than people think. Keeps cat oils off the pad and stops heat spots from forming. It should be UL or MET listed for continuous pet use. Not a human massage pad with a paw sticker. K&H’s Thermo‑Kitty line or their Lectro Soft pads usually check these boxes. Skip anything with a little digital controller brick. Those things die long before the heating element ever will.
