Which brands/products have gotten better over time?
The ones saucedgoatsauce mentioned are excellent japanese options. I also recommend Lamy Safari, Lamy Al-Star and Kaweco Sport for some good German options. The nibs are a bit worse but the pen itself feels a bit better imo.

Refillable pen suggestions
I've got a kaweco fountain pen that is made entirely out of bronze. I am pretty sure it will outlast me. They make them out of anything. Most commonly plastic, but also aluminium, brass, steel and even silver. Except for the plastic ones, I think the rest will last forever.

Refillable pen suggestions
Hmmm have you considered a fountain pen? I would recommend Lamy safari or Kaweco sports. They are relatively affordable for a fountain pen. And since it uses a converter to store the ink, all you need is just an inkwell (say Parker quink, widely available) and you will be good to go for the next few years.

Some of my favorite BIFL EDC items.
I have four Kawecos - three Sports and a Lilliput. Only one of the Sports and the Lilliput came with what I'd call a "satisfactory" nib. The good news is that the issues are usually simple to remedy in 5 minutes or less. Both of mine that had issues came with a tine gap too tight, so they wrote very dry and a touch scratchy. Easily fixed by carefully flexing the nib slightly onto a thumb nail and checking progress by writing.

What are your favorite niche BIFL items that are currently available?
- Tongs from Rosle - Anything from Nordicware Naturals - Handmade carbon steel cookware from Irons in the Fire - Waxed canvas lunch bag from Frost River - I don't know if my Staedtler 2mm mechanical pencil is truly bifl but the quality seems on par to be one. If it's not in sure Kaweco's pencils are. - Lodge cast iron products (non enameled). - Cast iron waffle iron from Appalachian cast iron - Maybe not super niche but Fjallraven bags don't get mentioned enough here.

My only issue with the brass variant is that it is heavy; coming in at 46 g. It's a nice weight when I'm using it but to carry it, the aluminum sport model might be a little bit better.

I have that brass Kaweco in the fountain pen version. I swapped the nib from my plastic Sport and loosened it up a bit, now it writes like my gold nibs. Solid little guy that patinas nicely.

Fountain pen. Kaweco special, and a Levenger Ltech 2.0. For a roller ball, I like my little space pen.
