  Keen Austin is a pretty good choice if you can only take one shoe. On most work trips I pack something that looks nice for work (dressy sneaker like Adidas Gazelle or loafer) and a running shoe for longer walks, hikes and gym. For hot climes, usually I also throw in my Archies flip-flops as they are super light. Really depends on activities. I'm on a family trip now and have Reef Otis boots (similar to Blundstones but lighter) and gore tex NB sneakers - great for winter trip that is mostly city walking and some easy trails. I put Superfeet green insoles in anything that's not a running shoe as I have high arches. Probably could have got away without the sneakers on this trip tbh as I doubt I'll make it to the gym.

  Looking for quality but inexpensive snow/ outdoor boots

  I would up the budget and maybe look at the LL Bean boots. They're rubber on the bottom part and well made and can be resoled. Uninsulated ones are like $150 so good socks are a must. They can probably take the strap on cleats a bit better than gym shoes would though for that extra traction. Any other of the good boots I've had that have held up over the years and not lost their waterproofing after a year or so have been more expensive than that. Like I've got a pair of Oboz slip on boots that I've had for probably 8 years, the closest to them now are probably the Keen Anchorages, but those are $175, but I dont know how they hold up, but keen is pretty solid.

  I like Keen boots. They are comfortable and have models that have their version of Gortex. Buy it for like boots have a Goodyear welt which allows installation of new soles. Boots with good quality leather and Goodyear welts are not inexpensive.

  Start with a single piece upper if you can find it in your price range, leather or synthetic, because fewer seams make life easier when everything is wet and gritty... stitched on panels just trap muck and the seams give out fast you know and it all goes wrong Cheap glued uppers crack once the mud dries and the whole boot starts peeling apart so watch for that Look for softer rubber outsoles with real sipiing even a slight pattern helps on black ice while the hard plastic stuff feels fine in the shop but may as well be glass outside A gusseted tongue keeps out slush far better than any waterproof badge printed on the side and most membranes give way quickly under constant flex Merrell Moab Rove Thermo or the cold weather Keen Targhee versions sometimes drop near your budget on clearance they are not miracles but they survive rough winter use better than the usual bargain boots

  I was in the same spot a few years back after my old boots finally died. ended up spending way too much time researching because I didn't want to make the same mistake twice - turns out a lot of modern boots just aren't built like they used to be.The Keen Revels are solid, but I'd actually suggest checking out Biflly before pulling the trigger. it's basically a database of buy-it-for-life gear with real ownership data from people who've actually used stuff for years. Helped me narrow down which brands still make boots that'll actually last another 15 years instead of falling apart after 3-4 winters.ended up going with Danner and they've been great so far, but the platform showed me a few other options I hadn't considered that had better long-term track records.

  Yeah, I wore my keens for most of what you mentioned, great fitment and I was super bumped when the USA pair crumbled. The sorels aren't super comfortable, feels like wearing rain boots designed for snow...... but they are great for working in the snow, stiff and robust.

  I’ve had really good luck with Keen’s (there leather Chelsea boots are pretty great), Blundstones also good if they fit your feet (not great for ½ sizes), and I always loved Sorels when I still needed full on snow boots. I’m in the PnW, but coastal, so Keens work fine for me 90% of the time.

  Looking for slippers where the insides don’t flatten

  I have and odd recommendation but it might work if you’re like me and hardwood floors hurt the bottom of your feet and cause calluses to form. I had to have something with proper rubber padding. I bought Keen H2 sandals. There also good to wear outside but with a pair of socks on they are comfortable in the house and I have no more feet problems.

  Does anyone have a lifetime work boot?

  Im not in the trades but I love my Keens. I used to work on a farm 7 days a week doing all sorts of manual labor and then would keep wearing them as my daily boot in all seasons. They last YEARS. I would have kept wearing them but they had contrasting tread on the bottom of the boot that must be glued on, it kept repeatedly failing which was causing me to minorly trip. Unfortunately I cant remember the model. I would 100% buy these again. I now wear Keen San Jose, as I work in an office - a bit more professional looking imo. These hold up well too but the leather starts to look a bit worn. My company gives us money each year to get a new pair so typically I replace them.  That being said, if you are consistently using your boots, nothing is buy it for life imo. They will all wear out. If the outside holds up, the insoles wear out. But there are better/worse boots out there.

  Work Shoes/Redwing Boots…

  Be mindful of mobility too. If you currently or in the future could need to climb inside vehicles etc, you may want a style on the thinner or lighter side. Red Wing Thorogood and Danner usually get the most praise. I spent a while last year looking for something similar and settled on Keen. I was pretty happy with what I saw from Ariat too. When I worked in a plant where I walked the floor constantly, a few of us settled on a particular style of Rockport at the time as the most comfortable and longest lasting. I put two pairs through hell and still have them 15 years later. That’s not to say they make them like that anymore but don’t be afraid to branch out to different styles than a boot too. Personally for that, I’d look at Merrell, 5.11. Maybe try on some police or military style boots or shoes too. And if you haven’t already, Amazon try before you buy is a huge help.

  Glerups rubber vs leather

  Sorry...but it's nice to know it wasn't just me!! I ended up getting a pair of Keen slippers which are much bulkier but so comfortable to walk in. Will be looking at Giesswein, they are also wool but from photos the sole has a lot more coverage.

  Some notes to guide your choice:  1. The sole type and hardness will matter a lot. Hard rubber soles on concrete make the shoe feel harder, no matter what insert you use 2. There are few wide toe style steel toe boots. Your best bet is probably a boot with a moccasin style toe 3.   That’s me and my Keens. Redwings just don’t feel right on me, but Keens have never let me down. I even did a warranty claim on a pair. Something was up with the sole of one and I was going to be back in the US for exactly 24 hours. I was flying from Portugal, stopping by home for one night, and then flying to china the next day. They mailed me a new pair and just trusted me to mail back the others. Their customer support was very helpful. They made me a loyal customer.

  Thanks for the recs! I recently got into some Keen sandals and I’m really liking them. Feel so much better than the Tevas I had before. I’m sloooowly replacing every pair of pants and shorts that gets a tear or bad stain with Patagonia. I’m currently absolutely loving the Transit Traveler shorts. Extremely comfortable and just enough stretch but not a total “gym short”. They’re currently sold out of my size but I will be ordering more.

  I need some good steel toes for work

  Model’s gonna depend a lot on your foot shape and what exactly you’re using them for, but since there’s not much else to go on, this is more of a brand suggestion than a specific pair. You could try Carhartt for something classic and sturdy, especially if you're used to heavier boots. Keen utility has a bit more flex in the sole, so they’re solid if you’re walking long shifts. Or go with Nortiv 8’s, more under the radar, but decent balance between structure and comfort. Cushioning holds up over time, and they’ve got enough ankle support that you wont feel stiff. Honestly some of the more niche ones outperform the hyped-up brands, especially once you hit the 15k+ steps a day mark. You should pop into a workwear or tactical gear store too if there’s one near you, sometimes just trying a few on tells you more than a hundred reviews. Let me know what you land on and I’ll drop a few more links here if you want extra recs later.

  I will give give Keen hiking boots and closed toes sandals a shout too, as they've lasted me over a decade as well. The leather sandals were given to me second hand. Still going, but the hiking boots aren't as waterproof anymore as the seams are cracking a bit now which for as long and as hard as I've used them around farms, mountains, etc.. they've  held up pretty well.  Ariats are just more BIFL because they can be resoled.

  Totally depends on what you are looking for. I live in tevas and birks but a lot of people think they don’t have enough support for long term wear. My mom really likes chacos which have a more supportive sole and very adjustable straps. My dad likes keen and Merrill sandals which fit more like shoes, have a shoe sole, and come in versions with a closed toe which can be good for various situations but still have the ventilation of sandals.

  Comfortable work boots?

  In my experience, you need to be at the $250 mark, and that was 5 years ago, so $300 is probably more likely.  That said, my buddy loves his Georgia boots that were $190.  I personally love my US made Carolina boots. I have some Thorogood boots, but they are too narrow. If they fit, I'd like them a lot better. Thorogood and Red Wing are the starting point of quality boots from what most people say. I personally like my Carolinas, but they were only $15 or 20 cheaper than the Thorogoods.   Goodyear welts and as much leather as possible is key to BIFL. Also, unless you need it for comfort, wedge soles tend to wear out. The Thorogood and Keen soles are about the best from  what I hear, but a hard leather will last longer.

  Depends a lot on what you're doing. In general I'd recommend a wedge sole and avoid things that are waterproof. Water resistant will be much more comfortable and keep the vast majority of people perfectly dry. Thorogood, Keen, Red Wing, Danner and Carolina are good choices. Nick's and White's are great choices. For casual/dress boots I'd check out Thursday Boot Company, Red Wing Iron Rangers, and Grant Stone.

  There are several solid brands like Keen, Danner, Vasque, Salomon. They range from around $150-200. I have the Keen Targhee II and love them. Would recommend going to a store like REI and trying on a few pairs to see what feels good. The specific type to get depends on where you plan to hike. If it’s uneven, rocky terrain you may need a higher rise for ankle protection and thick sole. More flat, casual hikes you can get a smaller boot. Waterproof is ideal. GTX (Gore Tex) boots cost a premium but it’s a trusted technology.

  Berks are bad at first , but then they are oh so good. My dad has been wearing them exclusively for 50+ years (he put socks on when it gets cold). Retired ow, but he was a teacher up in front of a classroom of middle schoolers for 45 years. Other than Birks I like Keen’s for a lot of walking.

  Need new boots for dessert hiking.

  Any of the top tier hiking brands should be good. Keen, asolo, Salomon and others few things I'd recommend... 1 get a boot that fits well (don't pick a brand, pick the boot that fits well from one of the top brands). 2 unless youre worried about the sides getting torn, get something breathable (I would avoid heavy leather use and waterproof boots especially for the desert.) It's going to be dry and if you step in water your feet will dry out quick. The breathability will keep your feet healthier. Lastly and this depends on you but if you'll be doing a lot of miles. . .consider a lighter weight boot to save your legs. Most shoes/boots are really only good for a few hundred miles before the supportive layers in the sole wear out and some lighter weight top materials will last that long anyway. Hiking shoes/boots are something you want to be good shape to not hurt your body long term. That includes not wearing them past when they are no longer supportive. O btw get lighter weight wool socks to pair with them. personally I'd be out there in some trail runners that are comfy allowing the sides to get torn on rough terrain a bit before I'd wear a heavy non breathable boot. Your feet will love you for it. I've done lots of desert miles over my life. Including a number of week(s) long backpacking trips on and off trail. My thoughts on this aren't really traditional bifl but I do have that mindset for a lot of things. My experience says get a really good brand and don't make it do more than it should since bifl isn't entirely appropriate here.

  Keen boots/shoes are very comfy. I walked about 10-15km per day in them and never had a break in period they were perfect from day one. They were safety shoes so not the most fashionable but hopefully their non work shoes might also be comfortable. I have 20+ year old docs and I agree the break in period sucks, I still remember it from many moons ago. But once they are broken in they’re perfect. If you still have them shove your feet inside with a bunch of socks on, moisturize the leather and use a blow dryer to warm it up while wiggling and bending your feet.

  Tactical boots for security guard

  Ok they’re not super tactical, but keen makes some mostly black boots. They last a long time, and they’re very waterproof. Most comfortable shoes I own. But I have had a few pairs that squeak on certain floors.

  LOL!! I have had my Keen winter boots since 2008, have worn them through 16 winters, and they are still in perfect condition. Never "came apart." Not even close.

  Are There Any Truly BIFL Insoles?

  It has only been a few months, but I got a pair of the keen work-boot insoles. One of the higher ranked ones on all of the insoles review websites, and it still looks brand new. In about the same amount of time the one that came in the murals was basically destroyed. To be fair, So many of the stock insoles are paper thin garbage, so it's not a big stretch to replace it with something that might not last for life, but will last you as long as you keep the shoe, especially if we're talking sneakers or basketball shoes. It would probably last the life of several or more pairs of those.

The toe shows zero signs of wear.   I really like this pair of keen steel toe boots I've had for about 8 months or so. The tow box is mostly covered in rubber and hasn't worn at all yet. The toe box is also very square which is why I bought them, regular steel toe boots seem to be too narrow for me and dig into my foot. These keens can be a bit more than some options out there but I would guess that they're cheaper than red wings. I opted for the slip on ankle high boots but there are many options.
