What to buy with $300 E Gift card?
For crafty or gardening stuff, the failure point is almost always cheap metal or soft plastic. Once that goes, everything else follows Forged carbon steel is worth paying for because cast pieces like to snap right at the neck when you actually lean on them and it’s maddening because you can’t fix it. Anything with a cutting edge works far better in high carbon steel since the mystery stainless on Amazon gives up almost immediately. Garden tools with ash or hickory handles are far safer picks, while those shiny laquered softwood ones feel nice at first... then the handle twists in half. Skip the battery powered self care gadgets. Mechanical gear lasts longer and you can keep it clean. A boar bristle brush with a wood handle will outlive everything else, the plastic vented ones melt or crack or drop bristles everywhere and it’s just a mess you don’t want. Craft tools that screw together are repairable, riveted ones go loose and you’re stuck with it but not in a good way. If you want examples, Fiskars Pro forged hand tools are solid and Kent hairbrushes are proper heirloom tier even if that sounds a bit dramatic.

What’s a BIFL thing you bought and now swear by?
KENT combs

What's a purchase under $50 that has genuinely improved your daily routine?
Lodge cast iron pans (other brands get hot spots and rust more easily), EZ-Duz-It can opener, I can’t tell you how many $2-3 can openers go dull and rust within a year, a Denman hair brush- the bristles don’t warp, fall out, it’s rubber and nylon instead of plastic, so it doesn’t cause static and make my hair frizz like plastic does, same with Kent combs, they’re made of cellulose acetate instead of plastic, so they don’t damage your hair, the prongs are also polished which prevents snags, rough damaged hair, and split ends

I bought my mom the same brush she bought 35 years ago or more.
I don’t know about their brushes but if you’re a dude and you comb your hair, a Kent comb will change your life for about eight dollars

List your 3 favorite BIFL items and at least 1 regret or fail
Top 3 that may help others out. - Kent combs and brushes. Amazing quality; doesn’t pull on beard hairs like must combs do. - Hand tools like Knipex pliers, Gearwrench ratchets, etc. that are quality for the piece needed. Note that one brand doesn’t make the best of everything. Project Farm does great testing to help figure out what to buy from each company. - Gardening tools with wood handles so they can be rehung when needed. Hammers, axes, rakes, shovels, are all this way. You can find a lot of old heads for free and just rehang them. - RM Williams boots. Very comfortable and can be rebuilt when needed. Keep the leather clean and hydrate them with Obenaufs paste. Future items: GoRuck pack, Rolex (functional savings account), coffee grinder, pour over rig, and tea pot.

What to buy in London
If you’re going to buy a Kent comb get to Jermyn Street and go to Trumpers and the Tailor of Old Bins Street. Pretty much anything in either of those two shops is bifl and small enough for hand luggage. I’m afraid being German matters not!

New Kent Combs for Me and Dad
I am a Kent fan. I switched to them as a brand years ago when I had a beard, I mean attempted to have a beard, and never looked back. They aren’t expensive, but they are worth it. I have Kent brushes too.

New Kent Combs for Me and Dad
Cheap black combs are made from melting and moulding. Kent combs (and other premium combs) are made by cutting, sanding, smoothing and polishing. The black comb teeth will be rough and snag / damage your hair. Premium combs will be smooth and won't damage the hair.

New Kent Combs for Me and Dad
I got one of the smaller brown combs years ago. All the gold on mine's rubbed off, but it's still a great comb!

New Kent Combs for Me and Dad
the way its cut masks it premium, these Kent combs glide through hair, cheap combs grab onto hair and cause split ends, these really are the bee's knees and for a premium product not that expensive

New Kent Combs for Me and Dad
I have that same Kent 16T. It is the best beard comb that I have used. I also have the Kent Slim Jim for my mustache comb. It is starting to warp a little along the spine, but I think that is from sitting in my vehicle during the day when I am traveling. I have never used Chicago, but I do have the Giorgio version of both of my Kent combs. They look and feel so close to one another they could be from the same factory; except that Giorgio is supposedly made in Italy. They have Ivory as a color option though, so that is why I bought mine. I also have a folding pocket comb that I got from Rockwell Razors that really looks like it is also made by Kent or Giorgio.

New Kent Combs for Me and Dad
Wife used to steal my Kent so much I bought her her own. They are great combs! (Also have a cheap ACE I keep in my luggage for trips that I’ve had since high school)

Is there a good alternative to lint rollers?
The ones I have don’t snag, even silk blend sweaters. I was sent off to college with one in the mid 90s and I’m pretty sure it was from a stash my mom had collected over the years. I can’t speak to the Amazon ones, but the old school velvet type brushes are not aggressive on fabric. The business end of the Amazon brushes looks very similar to mine, so I would imagine it’s just a difference in handles. You can still find them occasionally at high end men’s stores if you want something without plastic. Saks and Neimans used to have them, but it’s been at least 15 years since I’ve looked for one. My grandfather had a set of Kent clothing brushes of various bristle types along with a velvety one. Kent still has natural bristle clothing brushes available, so does The Laundress, but not the velvet type. If you have a good tailor or dry cleaner in town they can likely get them for you too.
