Bought Kirkland branded All-clad 10 piece set in 2020 for about $200. It is a work horse. Before I bought the set from Costco, I went to Williams-Sonoma and ‘visually inspected’ the name brand. It was EXACTLY THE SAME. I will be buried with this set.

I never want to buy cookware again
I have a Kirkland (Costco store brand) stainless steel set purchased 20+ years ago. There are a couple of dents on one pan due to a child dropping it from height but otherwise they are in the same shape as purchased. Daily use for a family of four. Except the steamer insert which never gets used. Easy to clean (Barkeeper's Friend), heat well and even, other than my cast iron they are my daily workhorses. The ones I have show a copper disk but later models have the copper disk completely covered with the stainless outside.

My dish towels are BH&G, and I agree! Thick & firm! I also really like our oversized Kirkland towels from 15 years ago. All cotton, still going strong! They are the perfect amount of rough, and absorb water like a MFer.

Best basic tees that actually last?
I've been on the same hunt for quality basics that actually hold up! After going through so many brands that shrink or lose their shape, I recently discovered Forms & Folds - they make premium basic t-shirts in 100% cotton for both men and women. The quality is really impressive and they've held up well through multiple washes without losing their fit. The cotton feels substantial but not heavy, if that makes sense. For other reliable options, I've also had good luck with some of the brands mentioned here like the Kirkland Pima cotton tees when Costco has them in stock. What's your experience been with different cotton weights? I find the mid-weight options tend to last longer than the super thin ones.

The white ones are great. Good fit, good material. The black ones though. Crazy shrinkage, lighter less sturdy, warp after 2 washes, probably have to buy a size larger than you normally would. Do not recommend.

Help me find the best basic T-shirt I’ve ever worn (or similar)
I totally get the struggle of finding that perfect basic tee! The features you mentioned - thick collars that don't stretch out, side slits, and that perfect soft fabric - are exactly what separates a great t-shirt from just another cheap one. I've been through this same search and recently discovered Forms & Folds, which makes premium basic t-shirts in 100% cotton for both men and women. Their construction quality is really impressive - reinforced collars, quality stitching, and the cotton feels substantial but still soft. They're definitely more of an investment piece than Old Navy pricing, but the durability seems worth it so far. That said, from the comments here, Uniqlo's heavy cotton tees and Kirkland from Costco seem to be the crowd favorites for that sweet spot of quality and price. The Uniqlo ones especially get mentioned a lot for having those thick, structured collars you're looking for.

Japanese Joinery Bed Frame Review - FlexiSpot
I've been using the Flexispot frame for a week now. It seems quite solid and is a decent value for the money. Agree about the slats being pretty rough, and wish they were closer together. I should probably have gotten the upgraded slats and may order them later. We haven't had any toe crashes into the frame but have definitely had shin collisions; it really smarts when you smack your shin on that thing! I hope our mental mapping kicks in soon! There's one annoyance so far - it is REALLY hard to get the fitted sheets on. I have an 11" Saatva mattress with separate 4" latex topper (from Sleep on Latex - SUCH nice people!) and even the "deep pocket" Kirkland sheets are really hard to put on. It takes two people. I have 1 set of Cuddledown uber-deep pocket sheets and they are a bit easier but trying to work around the frame and those rough slats is a challenge. Cuddledown sheets are IMO way too expensive for what you actually get (they don't even label the sides) so I'd rather not buy more of them. Any tips/ideas that will make it easier to put sheets on without knuckle-scraping???

I’m the farthest thing from a Costco fanboy, I actually hate Costco, but I’ve got some Kirkland signature plain tees that I’ve put the through the wringer and they’re still holding strong. Gotta give it to them. Been through travel, industrial work, never laundered gently ever and still going. I’d say at least 6-8 years.

Is there anything you're convinced is "the cheaper the better"?
Medication like acetaminophen… you don’t have to buy Tylenol, just get the equate/members mark brand or Kirkland. This goes for a lot of things like contacts lens solution as well, and among vitamins. Also nowadays cars. Having owned Benz’s and Beemers. You can get everything in a Kia/Hyundai. Yes it’s a Kia. I get it, BUT a Mercedes c300 isn’t a Mercedes from 10+ years ago luxury built wise. They feel cheap now and are 4 cylinders just like the Kia but don’t have a warranty like them. I don’t own one btw, I’m a Toyota person and have a 4runner but when I was car shopping for my mom they left me kinda impressed compared to that rav4 le I drove and hated. As a car person that likes to work on cars and have a bunch of tools that sometimes I’m confused what it is. I will say hand tools. You don’t need the newest Milwaukee tool….. just head down to Harbor freight and get their Pittsburgh brand which has a lifetime warranty. You can also be boujee and get their Icon and daytona brand too.

Store brand refrigerated pickles over claussen (not deli tho), any brand noodle over Barilla (Barilla is crap), produce from a produce market vs any bagged product (dole as an example), Kirkland undies, puma socks, and replica jerseys are more comfortable than authentic for most sports.

What’s a small upgrade you made that ended up being way more impactful than expected?
Costco- Kirkland with the green label they come in a 4 pack with three pair black and one pair light grey. Something like 50+% wool which is the highest I’ve seen for the price. Great quality and can be dressed up or down. They used to sell a higher % wool sock but they did away with them a few years ago. I still have my originals going on 7 years old with no holes or tears.

Canada. Kirkland, Bench, a few other brands (seasonal; online?) in cotton, polyester, stretch fabrics, mesh stretch…. With average cost per shirt $5Cdn. Some fabrics are nearly transparent, and some fit very snug (medium with one brand fits as a small in another brand)

Better yet, they're only $90 for the King size set. After decades of dealing with crappy sheets, my wife and I decoded to get one really nice set of sheets, with plans to just cough up every few months for another set. I saw folks in r/Costco raving about the sheets and miraculously remembered to look for them the next time I was in the store. I didn't have high hopes considering the price, but we bought three more sets the next time we went to the store because they are quite good.

I personally don’t like the idea of underwear lasting for life, I’ve noticed cotton becomes a little rough after a year (due to washing) and elasticity tends to reduce drastically. What I do is buy the Kirkland Supima cotton underwear packs every year and discard the order ones that have lost elasticity.

What's the best cookware you've ever had?
Tri-play stainless steel pots and pans for everyday - can go in the oven and the dishwasher. Learn how to use butter or oil to create nonstick surface. I have all second-hand tramontina, cuisinart, calphalon, kirkland, and all-clad. If I purchased new, I would get the tramontina for sure, used the hell out of all of them. Enameled cast iron dutch oven for soups, stews, roasts, and bread - I have a lodge, tramontina, and le creuset. I'd go for the tramontina again, but I haven't used mine much, so maybe look for yourself. Cast iron skillet for steaks and cooking on grill and maybe a cast iron griddle if you'd like - any well known brand, easy to get used One 10" or 12" nonstick cheap skillet for various things like maybe low cal hash browns - I like the tramontina brand again here - they make the sams club skillets I believe. These will never be BIFL so I just don't use mine much anyway - optional And you should be set for life and then some.

I've had this exact issue with darn tough too. Sure they have the warranty but, I've got ADHD and I work a fuck ton, it's not gonna happen. I honestly started going with the Kirkland brand wool socks. Not because they don't get holes but because they feel about the same as darn tough, last as long for me, but they're like $16 for 4 pairs so I don't feel bad throwing them out.

Darn tough are a great choice. However, I have wide feet and find them a bit tight at times. Check out Point6 and if you’re a Costco member the Kirkland Merino wool fit nicely as well.

Brands That Used to Be BIFL — But Aren't Anymore?
I would add some of Costco's items also. Their Kirkland brand men's jeans were amazing and my husband would wear them daily and they last a long long time. They went off the market for a while for some reason. Now they are much thinner and slightly stretchy. They used to be more like the old fashioned Levi's. I also had bought their women's wool socks in the winter. They would last several seasons really soft and warm and thin. Now the ones they're selling are thin and after one washing they looked pretty funky like they were coming apart and I had to take them back. I traded them for another batch thinking maybe it was just the one. They did a little bit better but they just don't hold up for more than one year maybe. I know Costco has to keep their prices down to stay in business but at some point you need to have just some Basics that last like men's jeans. And bring back the Polish sausages in the Deli restaurant!

Kirkland wool socks, 4 pairs for about $15 when they have them. The merino wool content is high compared to other wool socks, a steel. The Kirkland boxer briefs, 4 for about $15. High quality cotton, good cut, high percentage cotton compared to other brands.

Honestly I finally got my hands on some of the basic kirkland ones after being recommended them by so many people and they’re super cheap and really comfortable and they’ve been going strong for way longer than my old Gap ones which were twice the price. Idk if they’d necessarily fit the activewear needs you’ve laid out in terms of chafing but I’m pretty active myself (backpacking, dance, boxing, running, etc.) and haven’t had any complaints.

They changed them here in Canada sometime last year iirc. New ones are thinner, lighter material and don’t last nearly as long. Also they’re like $10 more. Used them for years as work jeans and made the switch last year to urban star which are cheaper and last longer. Really sucks since I loved the old Kirklands.

Kirkland are the best normal priced sheets you will find. So restful! Now, my favorite place to get bedding is The Company Store. They carry all sorts of covers, mattress pads, toppers and pillows of varying firmness, it's impossible not to find something that suits you perfectly. The prices are mid range and they have great sales. It really is a treat to outfit your bed from their catalog.

I have a set of flannel sheets from L.L. Bean that I bought 15 years ago maybe even closer to 20 years ago. They are fantastic in the winter. For the rest of the year, I like the Kirkland Pima cotton 680 set from Costco. Reasonably priced, nice and cool never have any problem with them.

I prefer percale and LL Bean is the best but my current mattress is too thick for them so I have been using the Kirkland sateen. I don’t love sateen but the quality is amazing for the price.

Love the Kirkland sheets! I grabbed a set a couple years ago after staying at a friend's place and being surprised by how comfortable their guest bed was. It turned out to be Kirkland sheets! They’ve held up super well after a million washes, still feel crisp and cool, and honestly feel pretty close to the hotel vibe.

Costco vs Sam's Club
I’ve been a pretty diehard Costco person for years, but recently have come around to Sam’s due to Scan and Go and the absolute shitshow that Costco is on the weekends. Food court is a wash, as is gas. Generally Sam’s has more variety, but Costco better quality. Kirkland private label is also superior for most items. I did the delivery from Sam’s one time and got all kinds of produce and chicken that expired in like 2 days. So that was a no go for me but I’m a date checker. Honestly I’d probably go with whatever is closer and/or more convenient and if you’re not happy try the other. Many products are interchangeable.

Costco vs Sam's Club
The Sam’s club within a few miles of my house is the busiest warehouse on the east coast. It was always overcrowded and a nightmare to get through the store and their parking lot. Their employee customer service was nonexistent (something about being heavily pregnant and waiting for a pickup order for 45 minutes because they forgot to grab the milk out of the cooler really put me in a mind to never go back). I go out of my way to shop at a less busy Costco and it’s worth every penny for my sanity. Most Kirkland branded products are excellent quality for a fraction of the price of branded items. Their bakery is excellent. The prescription discounts are deep- I have filled multiple of my dogs’ prescriptions there for both flea/tick meds as well as human meds that they take (heart/anxiety meds). The executive membership pays for itself with the annual cash back. I’m sure Sam’s offers similar discounts but the actual experience being in store at Costco is so much better where I live. YMMV. I’d recommend getting a cheap trial membership at both and seeing which you prefer based on how easy it is to get to, whether they have what you need, and the shopping experience as a whole.

That’s where we landed as well. Both stores are pretty comparable, and Sam’s has the edge in checkout by a mile, but comparing similar products the Kirkland stuff has way better ingredients than Member’s Mark at a nearly identical price point.

It always seemed to me that Costco had "weird" brand names (not including the great Kirkland brand). Sam's just has more things and everyday brands that people are used to.

Costco, it’s not even close. Higher quality products, if things don’t work out return it - they operate at such tight margins that they can’t handle excess returns without discontinuing the product. Kirkland is single handily the best generic brand - asides HEB. Ethically they show that a company can be wildly successful by being extraordinary to their staff. They sell membership not products in a way - so their whole goal is to retain their members. You also need to have a disposable income to shop there, I’m not going to lie, it’s very expensive to go to Costco; each staple item cost $10-$20, granted you’ll get value out of it.

Please don't laugh but I have had the same set of Kirkland 680 TC 100% cotton hotel sheets for over 5 years, and if if anything they have only gotten softer and more comfortable. They don't come in many colors - white/tan/green/blue, and I have white because I use colorful blankets as my accents. I do not know who manufactures these for Costco but their buyers hit a home run on these, as far as I'm concerned. I paid $69 for my King set iirc, and I just saw when I was there yesterday they now are $79. A heck of a deal in my book.

https://www.youtube.com/@The3DHandyman/videos this guy has some great videos and test data. i just use furnace filters (16x25x1, the kind our furnace uses) from costco (kirkland ones are MERV 13 and come in a 4 pack). the quad filter design was around a lot longer than CR, and they even talk about that. those stupid box fans are awful all around - lots of people miss the need for a shroud and the throughput just sucks for the amount of noise and the terrible space use. that kit with the PC fans is also a clever one, you could rig something up with plywood, a drill, and some patience. have home depot cut 'em for you.

Best Cooking Pans Now? Recommendation?
This is maybe not in the spirit of BIFL and maybe more frugal advice, but if you used the same set of pans for YEARS and they’re FINALLY starting to degrade, maybe that’s all you need is another set. I do like my Kirkland set for a budget option. Though the small fry pan started to show wear after 3 years of being the most used. I use a Lodge cast iron to replace it, but all the other less used pans I expect to have for years.

This is maybe not a great example - in this context the Kirkland brand is also known to be high quality dog food. Costco often brings in a high-quality product, finds that it sells well, and next year has a "Kirkland" version of the same thing that it either sells right alongside the old high-quality product, or replaces it. In some of those cases I happen to know for a fact because of my industry that it really is literally the same factory - sometimes the only thing that changes is the carton art and/or carton size. In other cases, it is a copy at a different factory, albeit with an attempt at matching QC and quality where it's a Kirkland branded product (they don't try and gain margin with a lower-end version). I had a German Shepherd/wolf hybrid that had digestive issues with low-quality dog food and so I went down that rabbit hole. The food he did well with was a very expensive food called "Taste of the Wild." Kirkland ended up being so similar in quality (while not an exact copy) that I swapped to it, he did fine, and I got to save $40 per month.

I met someone who owned a factory that bagged dog food. He got sent it in bulk, and bagged it for dog food companies. High end expensive dog food bagged for half the time, then swapped out the bags and put the exact same product in Kirkland bags. Some products are identical.

Costco. Sams is ok but Costco you're paying for the warranty and access to the Kirkland brand which consistently tops the quality at the lowest prices. It's not usually true bifl clothes there, but you can find above average quality and way below average price pretty consistently. Tech pants, jeans, shorts and swimsuits I've had great luck on (you still gotta look out for what's gonna be good stitching and materials), but all between 10-20$. Tshirts less luck, but sometimes they have pima cotton Kirkland plain tshirts that feel incredible and pima cotton is close to bifl, and those are $10 usually. Not to mention all the money you'd save on essentials and bulk for stuffs. If you can avoid falling into the classic Costco trap of buying stuff you don't need, you can save a fortune

Where Does "Buy It for Life" Not Make Sense?
That has not been our experience. We have basically gone through all the brands and have found the Charmin ones along with the Kirkland ones to best the best of the bunch. In a pinch we've had to use Charmin to soak up spills and they soak up a noticeable amount more than any other toilet paper. Agreed on bidets. 100 percent awesome.

+1 on the Costco idea. The Kirkland line with the American grown cotton at 680 thread count. Those are the ones you’re looking for. They’re definitely higher quality than any other sheets I have. For luxury, if that’s what you want, I’d look at Frette. I’ve slept on them, they’re nice, but Kirkland is what’s on my bed.

Men’s pants that won’t rip?
Wranglers are good and cheap. Levis are trash these days. Old stuff is good but you won't find it. Kirkland signature is unironically one of the best for the money out there if you have a Costco membership. I have been using Carhartt rugged flex for a while now and have no complaints. A tiny bit of elasticity in them feels nice. I wear loose fit and actually wear them around my waist like I'm supposed to. You clearly aren't doing that if you have the crotch go. Your inseam is too low on your body and when you spread your legs via squatting down etc you are over stressing the inseam because of where it is. If it was higher up closer to your berries it wouldn't have to be pulled on like that and would never rip. Wear your pants higher up around your waist like you're supposed to OR buy jeans that specifically fit to hug your hips. Kirkland/Wrangler/Carhartt are good brands. True BIFL jeans are several hundred dollars a pair. It doesn't make sense to buy them that way. Cheaper to buy 10 pairs of wranglers and get 3 or so years out of each of them than it is to buy a new pair of BIFL jeans for 300$ every 15 years.

Does the Cuisinart Multiclad Pro Stainless set have a nonstick coating or is this a typo?
I have this set. Doesn't have any coating. Bare stainless steel. Though I don't recommend it. I recommend either a Kirkland TryPly from Costco, or an All Clad D3 set. Why: the Cuisinart is physically smaller in cooking surfaces vs those other two. I regret my Cuisinart, I cheaped out. But it's bifl so I'm gonna use the ever living heck out of it.

Can't say anything about the machine itself but the only 2 brands of detergent worth buying are Tide and Persil (Kirkland's Signature is fine because it's made by Persil). In Consumer Reports rankings 17 of the top 20 spots are one of those 3 brands. Deft Pacs is the highest rated not of those brands at #11. 7th Gen's highest rated is scored at 55 (vs Tide Plus Ultra Stain Release at 84) and is ranked in the 30s. If you want something wtih no fragrance, Tide Plus Hygienic Clean 10x Heavy Duty Power Pods is the best rated fragrance free.
