I never want to buy cookware again
WTH are you doing to cookware to destroy it in three years? We bought basic stainless steel stuff in 1993 and used it for 20 years before giving it to one of our kids, who still use it. We replaced it with another basic set (KitchenAid branded I think) and it's all fine now 12+ years later. We cook extensively, every day. The only other cookware we have are cast iron pans/griddle, the oldest of which was made in the 1940s. Seriously: what is happening to your stainless stuff? Ours was never expensive and we've used it for decades, heavily.

No... Definately no. The old Swing-a-Way can openers were terrific, but the *currently made ones* from China are **junk**. I would go with an oxo brand, or maybe a KitchenAid branded one... They are about as good as you will find these days. Of course, you could try to find a used Swing-a-Way from when they were USA made, those were great.

BIFL is about quality not the brand name.
I could explain why KitchenAid mixers are so good and last forever. But I don’t know that stuff. I just know that KitchenAid mixers do a great job and last forever. I could detail that you cannot find anyone who knows how to fix them because they never break. But that is kind of covered in the first part. I don’t know why KitchenAid is so good. Or Le Creuset. Or All-Clad. I’m not the expert. I just know that they’re really good.

I looked at both and ended up with a 1980s-1990s Kitchenaid from ebay. Built like a tank, perfect condition, $20. The handle doesn't get hot, but it is very heavy. Alas, no induction, so it's slow.

I spent last week at a Carribean resort that had one of these old school stove top kettles (I use an electric kettle at home) and despite its age and wear, it worked great for boiling water quickly. I can't believe Kitchen Aid messed up by trying to innovate on a classic design and thus messing with the core function of a kettle.

What’s a small upgrade you made that ended up being way more impactful than expected?
Depends on what you're brewing. As an insufferable tea snob, there are a few specific teas that are delicious brewed at around 50-60°C and get bitter with hotter temps. Most kettles don't go that low, so I picked one that does so I don't need extra steps for those teas, I think it's a Kitchenaid. Most people aren't that intense about it though. I do recommend ones that are easy to set to about 76°C if you like green tea, that's where most do best.

Bowl lift KitchenAid 7qt. That’s what my wife uses who is a professional baker. The industrial version is what the entire bakery chain Paris Baguette uses. If you think you need industrial, go for it, but I think you’ll be just fine with the standard bowl-lift.

KitchenAid stand mixers are absolutely worth the investment! My mom gave me one as a wedding gift because she got one as a wedding gift from my grandma who got one… you get the idea. My grandma’s is still working. I have the kind where the bowl lifts, which I really like because I can put cooling under the bowl when it’s raised. My mom has the kind where the top hinges back so you can accommodate larger attachments and a larger bowl since they attach at the stationary base. They’re both excellent, so go with what suits your needs (or… KNEADS)

There are a few appliances where the answer is "just get the X", even if it's a boring and canned answer. Stand mixer, kitchen aid. Boring, canned, get one. 1. Before any plastic worm gear shenanigans are posted - let me address that. The new ones have a plastic worm gear instead of metal. *GOOD*. It's a controlled failure point which costs 10$ to replace. The alternative is that the motor fries and thars 150-200$ last I looked and remember. At that point, replace the whole thing. Yes plastic Is used in new ones in place of where metal was before. It's an improvement. All the "BUT PLASTIC" shenanigans posts can shove it. It's gotten better recently but a couple years ago it was a plague in this subreddit. 2. Get on YouTube and watch some people tear them down and clean them. You can get a service kit online for 20$ that includes gaskets and the grease needed. Do that every 10 or so years depending on your use case. We eat a LOT of whipped potatoes in my house so i clean it a lot more frequently because it sees way more steam from hot potatoes than the average Joe, and it's kneading bread the other times. TL DR get the kitchen aid, the new ones with the plastic worm gear are great, learn to clean it. ----- To address the other question "should i get one" - you have a hand mixer year? Now imagine if you were using a whisk instead. If you break out the hand mixer more than once a month, i think it's worth the cost and space. If it's a twice a year thing, eh maybe not. They are kind of heavy, so id recommend a dedicated counter top spot. I put soft feet on the bottom of mine so I can slide it, a lot easier to tuck it under the counters. I also invested in the stainless steel attachment set + a third party spiral dough hook which works better than the KA dough hook. Also recommend.

I’m really emotionally attached to my kitchenaid. It’s not just the baking, although I use it at least once a week. It’s also the tradition, memories of my parents using theirs, the fact that it has barely changed in 80 years. It’s so heavy and solid and analog and iconic. I cook all the time (young kids) and love to cook, and my kitchenaid is easily in the top three favorite things in my kitchen.

I love my kitchen aid and use it weekly. It's only have been I think 4 years but it saved me a lot of time and trouble, specially for doing dough where you have to knead for 5-10 minutes. The machine do it for you and do it well. The basic come with a paddle, a kneading hook and a whisk. I was surprise but it get the egg whites fluffy like a hand mixer do. I bought few attachment with it : the gratter - I use it mostly for big brick of cheese to gratte. I find it harder for vegetables for it did real good for doing cauliflower rice. ; the pasta maker - don't go there ; the pasta sheet roller - Yes! I make all my lasagna with that. ; there's much more but did not try them yet. If you do buy kitchenaid, go with the big bowl. Mine is tilted head and it's working great!

We have this one too. My wife has a daycare and uses it to puree the food for the smallest. I don't think it is bifl though. It's our second Kitchenaid in that size, last one was a little smaller and lasted about 5 years. It's possible my wife abused it a little though. We also have the large Kitchenaid processor, Artisan and blender, and I think those are gonna last us forever, but then again, we don't use those every day.

I have a small KitchenAid blender that's lasted at least 5 years which has lots of use. Like others have said if I'm blending cheese I either grate it or cut it up first. I got through about 3 stick blenders that came with a blender attachment. The attachments always ended up breaking. My KitchenAid feels nice and sturdy but only takes up a small area. I'd recommend one.

Do you mean like a stand mixer with attachments? You can get a kitchenaid or a kenwood chef as a stand mixer, and they have food processor and blender attachments. Both are repairable, and (AFAIK) attachments can be used on newer and older systems (if you need to replace the mixer, you can use the same attachments). I personally have a \~20yo kenwood chef which is still going strong, and the attachments are great. The biggest downside is that the attachments are expensive - to get the stand-alone food processor attachment costs as much as the chef attachment.

Hobart N50 mixer on Facebook Marketplace.
Hobart was the original maker of the Kitchenaid home mixers. If you can find an old Kitchenaid, it will be a very solid machine. Unfortunately, Hobart spun off KA and the brand was sold years ago.

A good stand mixer that takes attachments. In the US everyone seems to recommend a KitchenAid, I personally prefer a Kenwood Chef. The main mixer will (should?) last decades, and the attachments can be bought or replaced as required, without needing to get a whole new machine. And if the machine does die, they can be repaired, or replaced and the attachments can continue to be used. It means instead of having an individual stand mixer, food processor, slicer/dicer, and blender, I have a single stand mixer with a drawer of attachments. And the stand mixer is 20 years old and still going strong.

For me, the "worth it" appliances are: * Robot Coupe R2 Dice with all the attachments (there are two kinds of food processors -- Robot Coupe and "less than.") * BlendTec blender * Robot Coupe or Vitamix stick blender (big price difference here -- the Robot Coupe is superior, but at a hefty price increase) * Kitchenaid (or better yet Hobart) stand mixer with at least the grinder attachment if not others * PolyScience Sous-Vide pro * MoccaMaster and LaPavoni coffee makers * Zojirushi or Cuckoo rice cookers My coffee grinder is no longer made. So I bought a couple burr replacements. It is unlikely to ever die.

My 1996 Kitchenaid stand mixer has finally failed. Need a recommendation.
You can buy a brand new refurbished artisan 5 quart directly from KitchenAid with a one-year parts warranty and free shipping in the continental US for $229. Most of those refurbished mixers are returned (new ones) because of small cosmetic reasons or it was a present and they didn't like the color. They include all the accessories that come with a new one. Just makes more sense to buy a new refurbished one. Besides a full rebuild cost $279 in parts (Mr. Mixer website), not to mention the labor and headache involved.

I got tired of garlic presses breaking. My last one was a Kitchenaid. The handle broke while pressing some garlic. Kitchenaid solid stainless steel turner, really sturdy and can be put in dishwasher. Also Kitchenaid stainless steel whisk, which is also dishwasher safe, only thing is the handle came off mixing thick ingredients, so I epoxied it back on and it doesn't feel like it's ever coming off now.

What are some actual BIFL kitchen items?
This combined 2 of my lists so there might be duplicates. I teach old fashioned skills so my stuff has to be able to take damage. Cast iron Dutch oven. For baking alone it is worth it. Cast aluminum/enamel is a second buy. Not as useful as the cast iron but good for heavy soups and stews. Also much lighter if you have a disability. Cast iron skillet set. Mine are mostly over 50 years old. 9 inch and a 7 inch are great. Larger ones for a larger family. I bought mine so used. Stainless steel skillet. Larger with a heavy bottom. Being stainless it can go into the oven just fine. I got mine used and it is great for stir frying and making sauces. Double sided cast iron griddle. Great to go over multiple burners on the stove and it can also go over a BBQ grill. Kitchen Aid mixer. I bought mine used and it is a late 1960s model. They are easy to repair. Stainless steel mixing bowl set with lids. Melamine would also work, just be careful of them around heat, they can crack. This is just me -- a dual burner propane camp stove. Because they fold and come inside, they last for decades. Cheaper than a BBQ grill, it will allow you to cook outside at any time. It will allow you to cook in a power outage also. Just remember if you use it inside, make sure you have a window cracked open an inch. They are also great for tailgating, picnics and traveling. If you actually cook, bake and use your kitchen, get a stainless steel pot set. If they nest -even better. The larger (deeper) ones can even be used for high acid canning like jams and jellies. Also get stainless baking pans. Glass storage set with lids so you aren't buying plastic over and over just to be able to stick leftovers in your fridge. A good set of kitchen towels to use instead of paper towels. If you wipe up water, just hang them to dry, not throwing them awake like paper. Stainless steel *nesting* mixing bowls with tight fitting lids. At least a set of 5 bowls. Preferably a set of 7 bowls with lids. They can be used for refrigerator storage as well as mixing. Cast iron Dutch oven with lid - 6 quart Cast iron skillet, size 8 or size 10. Too much larger and they are too heavy to lift when full. Cast iron bread/loaf pan. For everything from meatloaf, quick breads to bread. Heavy aluminum baking sheet set- the insulated kind. Not non-stick. (Use silpats and cupcake liners and parchment paper instead of non-stick garbage) Heavy aluminum rectangle/square cake/brownie pan set with slide on lids. 6"/8"/10" round pie pan set or just start with size 9. The 10" should ideally be a deep dish with a lid. Great for shepherds pie and chicken pot pie. Aldi's bread boule baking set. So much less expensive than everything else. It is worth the wait until it comes back on sale. Universal lid set, because you will never find the right one when you need it. Silicone ones last a long time unless you put it on/in a too hot stove. They are a lot easier to store than the steel sets. But get the set that fits you. Stainless steel, heavy bottomed 10 inch skillet with tall sides (taller than the cast iron at least). With steamer insert if possible. This is mainly for tomato based soups and pasta and things that would be too heavy for the cast iron 6-8 quart heavy bottomed stock pot with lid. Doubles as a stainless steel Dutch oven. If you can't get heavy bottom pans, get a heat diffuser to use under your pans. Stainless steel strainer/colander Sieve - set of 3 Collapsible stainless steel shredder/slicer/chopper. OXO brand is the best but it doesn't collapse. Stainless steel, restaurant quality utensil set with long handles Wooden spoon set with the proper instructions on how they need to be oiled and waxed. Because no one ever does and it shows. They can last a lifetime if properly cared for. Wooden rolling pins. One small one, 12 inches wide, one wider one, 20-25 inches wide with pastry rollers for the ends. Don't bother with fancy handles that get loose, just get the straight ones without handles. Just watch *pasta grannies* on YouTube. Manual stainless steel pasta machine/roller. Stainless steel 12-36 hole ravioli cutter. Stainless steel ring cookie/biscuit cutter. The kind with concentric rings from 5 inches down to 1 inch. Kitchen-aid mixer. Many of the attachments like the meat grinder are... lower quality than stand-alone tools. They just aren't built for heavy duty use. And they can overheat easily. All American pressure canner. It can also be used for water bath canning. Mine is from 1939. Food processor/blender. Don't know what one is BIFL these days. Mom's Cuisinart lasted 35 years. Carbon steel knife set with sharpener and hone (paring knife, chef knife, bread knife, carving knife, that's all you need) Stainless steel peeler/julienne

Lift bowl KitchenAid (size / wattage doesn't matter as they all have the same internal motor and gears--The different wattage rating is just a fabrication based on bowl size).

What is the best kitchen gadget under $100 that you own?
New it cost like $200 but I paid $80 for a used but looked new KitchenAid 13 cup food processor that included a dicer. I like making chili but I had chopping peppers. I don’t use much powder so most of the flavor comes from fresh peppers but chopping them is annoying and food processing them gets them to be so small that the pieces vanish after cooking all day. The flavor is good but I like the texture and visual of having bigger pieces in it. The dicer is perfect for it. All I have to do is reseed the peppers then drop them in and it diced them perfectly in less than a second each. I also have a freeze dryer and the dicer allows me to quickly process fresh veggies and fruit so I can freeze dry it For something that cost under $100 new I would say my vacuum sealer. It cost like $26 on amazon and it works great and I use it a ton.

Which moment made you switch to the "buy it for life" mindset?
I couldn't fully commit because I was young and broke, but when I was in my late teens/early 20s I realized the utility of an expensive purse. Not something crazy high end designer necessarily, but I had been buying $20 purses from Target and they'd be falling apart in months. I splurged on a Coach bag for myself (I think it was about $150) after I got my first big girl paycheck, and berated myself for doing something so stupid. After that thing still looked new a year later, it clicked. For the same price (or less overall), I could have a bunch of crappy purses that fell apart, or one decent one that lasted for years and years. That big girl job was working at Williams Sonoma and I slowly learned the value of getting decent kitchen tools, too. The first time I used a good garlic press it blew my mind. This works better AND will last through nuclear war? By the time I got married at 26, I had pretty much filled my kitchen with high quality basics and when it came time to register for our wedding, we really didn't need anything. Mostly put camping gear on there. It's been 20 years since I got that job and the majority of those items (All Clad, Picardie glasses, Kitchenaid, Wusthof, etc.) are still as functional as the day I got them.

If you don't have a Mixer, get a KitchenAid Mixer. Check out Mr.Mixer, he's a dude in Kansas that has a business refurbishing/rebuilding/servicing/upgrading KitchenAid Mixers. He sells Whole Mixers, or the parts to do it yourself. He also has a Powdercoat service, so if you want to Pimp Your Mixer, that's the way to go. He's super upfront about what his products do, and how they work. One of his big points is a little rubber spacer called the Everdime, that helps reduce vibration, and it's supposed to keep the attachments just above the bottom of the bowl. 11/10 worth. I sent in my mom's mixer after she passed and it's working better than ever. hopefully now, it will last long enough to go to my children when I pass.

There's a whole mixer sub on reddit. That said--theKA lift mixer they make 5.5 and 7 quart--they are identical housings and motors. So the 5.5 is very well regarded for it's less known versatility, price . It's a work horse.

Yeah, I have to say, this is totally right, better to have the right tool for the job. I got [this kitchenaid](https://www.reddit.com/user/Dormouseedythe/comments/1n84mhv/best_hand_mixer_for_all_your_baking_needs/) around a year ago, and it comes with all the attachments (incl dough hook!). Friends have raved about kitchenaid too since these appliances last a very long time. I must say, I've been incredibly impressed since it doesn't take up a lot of kitchen space but it's insanely robust, I can make pizza dough for the whole family and use this little hand held mixer, perfect!

Kitchenaid. Used to be bombproof, now the parts are either plastic and designed to wear out within a decade. On the plus side their customer service is pretty good. I have a blender whose jug kept leaking horrible rusty liquid (the seal below the spinner mechanism wasn’t watertight) and they sent me a replacement no questions asked.

Go for quality pieces over sets for sure. No knife set, no cookware set. Here’s my recommendations so far. - Duralex Picardie glasses (timeless, still in production, super durable. - Corelle plates and bowls (they make strange designs, but they also have simple white rounded and squarish plates) Le Cruset maybe if you prefer the style. My grandma handed some down, so they last. -Oneida flatware if there’s a style you like from them. I think they have a lifetime warranty and my parents’ has still lasted my whole life, although I have had a couple table knives rust from the dishwasher. (Haven’t tested their warranty) - All Clad stainless 12in skillet D3 (I got the D5 because of a sale and I liked the brush metal). - All clad or Demeyere 3qt-3.5 range saucepan…something with a lip for easy pouring - Demeyere 10in saucier? (I got this massively on sale and it’s super heavy, but it kinda bridges the gap if I need a smaller skillet like surface, or a larger saucepan surface. The rounded edges make it perfect for, well…sauces lol. - Le Cruset Dutch oven (although, the saucier has a lid and can go in the oven…even fits a sourdough loaf!) - Asahi professional line cutting board. Natural color is cheaper than black. Maybe not quite for life, but it’s the closest thing besides an end grain cutting board which is much more maintenance. They’re beefy. They’re rubber with some wood in it, so avoiding the microplastics and the bacteria growth of other boards. You can fairly easily sand off a micro coating of it and haha a completely new surface as needed. - Get a quality chef knife (or Santoku or something if you prefer), paring knife, and serrated knife, and learn how to sharpen the former 2. (I’m currently learning on the Sharpal double sided sharpener…maybe practice on a cheap knife before your nice BIFL ones though lol.) - Nordicware sheet pans, bread pans, cake pans if you’re into baking. - Pyrex 3 piece measuring cup set (sorry I broke my rule about sets lol) - Kitchenaid stand mixer (if you’re into baking) - Hario V60 Pour Over Coffee Starter Set (the one with the plastic pour over piece) if you’re into coffee Might have other recommendations for rice cooker, coffee stuff, and cooking utensils, but it’s probably not as BIFL. Hope this helps! I know people love cast iron and carbon steel. Go for it if you like, but I really do prefer a stainless steel pan myself.

Stainless steel with heavy/thick bottoms is the easiest to maintain and clean. My mom still has the set I grew up with, t-fal I think, and besides some color fading of handles from the dishwasher, it's perfect. I got a set of kitchenaid ss pans with beefy silicone handles and see through glass lids for a wedding gift almost 30yrs ago and everything looks like it just came out of of the box! If you go ss, never salt the water until after the water boils or you'll get pitting on the bottom insides. I do like having cast iron around for some things too but the ss is just such easy cleanup that I always reach for it first.

Parents need all new kitchen appliances
$5k budget might be kind of tight, but it could possibly be doable. I bought kitchen appliances in 2019 for around $5250 from Best Buy’s kitchen/bath retailer Pacific Sales. The only items I didn’t buy that were floor models were a GE Profile 5 burner cooktop (this was $1100, I think), and GE Profile Microwave and trim kit for about $425. The GE Profile fridge (which I honestly wouldn’t buy again) was $1500, the GE Cafe built in oven (which I adored) was $1800, and the Kitchen Aid dishwasher was $450. I ended up selling the house in 2020. The fridge was really the only disappointment as the water line got clogged and leaked out the bottom fridge because it was cause a layer of ice to form in the bottom freezer (at the time it was a known GE fridge problem with no fix other than to have the line cleaned). In my new house I did have to buy a Whirlpool fridge from Costco and I have been happy with it. It replaced a Kenmore Elite (which was a rebadged LG) with a bad condenser. I won’t buy an LG appliance product. My big kitchen splurge was a Miele dishwasher, I bought the highest home model available that was being discontinued from Pacific Sales for $1500. It is absolutely worth it. I went back there to buy the same or similar Kitchen Aid dishwasher I had in my old house and I hated the new third row set up and Miele’s just worked better. I had a GE Profile traditional in my old house for 14 years before I replaced it (it came with the house so it was closer 16-17 years old really) and honestly it was still working but my kitchen was small and I gained more space by putting in a cook top and a built in oven. I would buy another GE cooking product. I also bought a new GE Profile microwave for my new house.

Good knives if you do not already have them, and a high-quality cutting board to match. If you register a Kitchenaid, also register the little spring+washer mixer attachment that they stopped adding to their mixers for no good reason but you can buy on Amazon. It helps the mixer blade bounce less, putting less strain on the mixer and extending the lifespan. A really solid stainless or ceramic nesting bowl set with lids. Glass flip-top food storage - the only thing you'll have to replace eventually are the silicone gaskets, and that's not a big deal. If you drink, a really nice wine opener is so much more pleasant than a shitty cheap one. Ditto a really nice pepper grinder. If you register plates/bowls/forks/etc, try and find brands that allow you to buy a single or at least a relatively small number of whatever item. At some point you will lose/break a single item and want to replace *just that one,* and it's much nicer to just buy a single plate than it is a stack of four when you don't have space for three of them. Weird, but a stone mortar and pestle is basically impossible to *not* be BIFL and is so nice to have. They often look beautiful and make it easy and kind of fun to have fresh ground spices whenever you want them.

KitchenAid stand mixers. Unless you're doing exclusively bread dough and doing an industrial amount, a spiral mixer makes more sense. I abuse my KA with a decent amount of bread for an average Joe though. But a KA stand mixer is the default for me.

I have a Kitchen Aid hand mixer I’ve had for about 25 years. It’s a 9 speed and I love it. I did have to buy new beaters once but that’s a lot cheaper than buying a good mixer!

**Oldest item without moving parts:** I'm a chef and a lot of my daily-use mixing bowls are from the 1940s-1960s. I don't know which one is the *oldest* oldest, but probably a Fire King mixing bowl from the late 30s. **Oldest item with moving parts:** I have my great-great grandmother's rolling pin, which I'm guessing is from somewhere between 1890-1910. I generally prefer to use a tapered French rolling pin, but her standard baker's pin still works just like it would've 100+ years ago. **Oldest electrical item:** Late 1990s KitchenAid Artisan mixer. It's a little more beat up than the other items, but I bought it refurbished so it was never going to be pristine. It's still better than any KitchenAid you can buy new. **Oldest Internet-capable item:** My 1st generation Kindle Paperwhite purchased in 2012 is still going strong.

I have the big bowl lift kitchenaide micer I bought from sams club I guess this size is specific to Sams club a bit smaller than bighest one. 5 yrs no issues I make pizza dough and bread constantly never had a issue. However the smaller tilt one my daughter has struggles with dough!

What is the Best Coffee Makers on the Market?
Look this might be controversial but I have over 30 coffee makers , all but 1 or 2 of all of the SCAA makers on the market and the MM only makes my top 10 AFTER the shower head mod. My Aarke, Ratio 8 Zojirushie(Best thermal carafe on the market)Wilfa,Kitchen Aid Proline all surpass the MM IMHO. The MM will without a doubt last longer than most due to the copper boiler but I dont care about that when Im making my brew. A Bonavita will serve most peoples needs without the hefty price tag although I will take an older one over the newer ones due to cheaper components in the newer ones.The Breville is good and the option for cone or basket brews is a nice feature.. Best looking the Aarke wins hands down according to my guests but thats not something most care about..Again if you go with the MM get the shower head mod from Coffee Pilot in Canada for $30 plus shipping. Just my opinion everyone has their own opinion on these otherwise the market couldn't sustain so many high end makers. Happy Brewing!!

Tiny coffee gadgets that make a big difference?
I brew coffee one cup at a time in a stainless steel frothing pitcher, and pour it through a fine tea strainer. The coffee is about the same as French press. The tools cost maybe $15 total and have lasted maybe ten years so far. But I grind the coffee in a KitchenMaid Pro grinder. Built like a tank. :-)

I don't think the older ones are any better, it's just a lack of power. Most older kitchenaids only had a ~300W AC motor. My biggest disappointment with KitchenAid was actually them starting to roll out bigger, more reliable DC motors in their larger models, but then getting rid of all of them over the last year or two. Overall I still think they are pretty high quality, and parts are cheap and everything is easy to access. I've had my kitchenaid for over 10 years now, and have only had to open it once to do a standard service, replace the grease and the worm gear, all for ~$20 in parts.

What’s the pan everyone needs that’s BIFL?
For a wok and for "nonstick" skillets, carbon steel. Fpr everything else, fully clad stainless steel (stainless steel sandwiching an aluminum core throughout the entire pan) People love all clad but I don't, I don't like their saucepans straight edges that make pouring always a huge mess, guaranteed. And the aluminum core is exposed at the edge which, over a long time and especially if you put them in the dishwasher, wears away leaving 2 thin stainless edges that can cut you. KitchenAid makes a "5-ply" line (though any other brand would call it 3-ply) with black handles, and their pans have a flared & sealed lip that you can easily pour from. I also don't think the All-clad handles are comfortable, almost any other brand has a better handle, including these kitchenaids.

Like all cast iron, it can go from stovetop to oven to grill to campfire. **"Made-In*** **stainless steel 12 inch skillet** **Lodge cast iron skillet**, 9 or 10 inch *Kitchen-Aid mixer**. Especially if you cook from scratch. **Stainless steel nesting mixing bowl set with lids**. Ideally a set of 7 bowls. They work for storage as well as mixing. Stainless steel is easy to clean and can survive being dropped or even a hand mixer. **Lodge cast iron bread/loaf pan**. Good for meatloaf, quick breads and regular bread. The downgrade in Kitchen Aid quality is mostly myth. Kitchen Aid mixers are still (essentially) all metal and gear-driven. No computers either. The one plastic component is the worm gear, but that’s on purpose. It’s a sacrificial gear so that in the event it does break, you can replace a $20 part rather than ruin the entire motor. This has been the case since the 80s.

Thinking through induction stove and longevity
Induction has been the most common standard in Japan in the last 20 years or so. It’s much more durable than you’d expect. As soon as we got our first house, we replaced the cooktop with induction for safety reasons. The halogen bulbs in the range hood emit more heat than induction cooktop (as soon as it’s turned off). There’s a child lock on it. My entire household has ADHD, I’m not risking a house fire 😅 Get a KitchenAid, GE, or Whirlpool mid-to-high-range model. It’s a joy to use it once you get used to cleaning it.

I bought one of those Kitchenaid smart rice cookers a few years ago - it can do all types of rices, beans, other various things - it’s spectacular. Pour rice in, put water in reservoir, it knows exactly how much water to use, cooks to perfection every time. It’s been a daily driver for me with no signs of quitting, and I’m always apprehensive of anything “smart” with software. It’s a solid buy.

A cheap 10$ kitchen aid knife and a V block sharpener. I have decent knives. This knife is junk. But i put it through the dishwasher, use the V notch sharpener (which is also junk, don't use those for good knives), and then....I always have a sharp ass knife. I barely ever break out then good knives anymore i just go straight for this piece of junk. I'll hit bones - don't care. Vegetables, meats, don't care. It goes in the dishwasher and then gets sharpened and then goes in the knife block. This has been a game changer. I don't ever think about maybe doing a chicken a different way, just smash that bitch with the junk knife. I never think "but I'll have to clean it and that's the only hand wash thing I'll have to do....let me do something else". Toss that useless junk in the dishwasher and move in with life. It's been *glorious*.

BIFL Mixer: KitchenAid vs Ankarsrum
Really depends on use case. An Ankarsrum is a bread specialist. If you’d be happy for it to be great at larger batches of bread dough but somewhere between “finicky” and “more trouble than it’s worth” for other mixing tasks, it’s a great choice. If you don’t already have one, a hand mixer may be a good supplement if you want something that’s easier for occasional whipping, small batches, etc. A KA is more of a versatile jack of all trades, master of none. It won’t perform as well with bread, especially big batches, but it can do at least a decent job at pretty much any mixing task. It also has the biggest ecosystem of attachments. Everything that you read online about KAs being totally different than they were 20 years ago is pretty overstated if not just totally untrue. I think the bigger issue is that many people nowadays don’t know how to use them correctly and ruin them trying to knead dough on speed 6…

Or family uses a KA without issue, I think it's a 90s model. I haven't re-greased it yet, let alone pop the cover for any maintenance. No issues. It isn't the lifting bowl style but rather the lever top. That being said, 90% of baking is learning textural transitions. Recipe timings won't make you a better baker, nor will a mixer. Practice will.

They make the best countertop mixer according to literally every major reviewer. And mine has no issue handling high moisture doughs for pizzas. As for the mixer, duh. There's only two bifl mixers, vitamix and blendtec. Buying anything else has been a mistake for decades now.

Bottom Freezer Refrigerators with Water Dispenser/Ice maker?
I'd recommend going with a water dispenser inside the fridge and teh ice maker in the freezer, the ones with dispensers on the outside sacrafice a LOT of space & efficiency. Ours is a Kitchenaid.

Companies with reliable “right to repair” products: can we compile a list?
Fiskars has a good warranty service, but I find that Corona usually has more spare parts available for products in a similar price range. Their products tend to have a more repair-friendly design as well. My favorite power tools to repair have generally been from Bosch, DeWalt, and Makita. They tend to have the most spare parts available for the best prices. The repairability of the KitchenAid Classic/Artisan stand mixers can't be overstated. Parts are easy to get and cheap. Repairs can be a little messy, but require few tools

Overall, I think stainless steel pots and pans are the best and most versatile. Zwilling (made in Germany) are very good. For skillets, I've found that you don't need SS, Carbon Steel and Cast iron but it's nice to have options. I've realized that the difference between high-end and mid-tier is negligible here. My reco: - Lodge for Cast iron (anything else is a waste of money). - Tramontina (mid/low-tier) and All-Clad (upper-tier) for SS. The difference between tramontina and D3 for clad pans is not noticeable. Copper core is a bit better, but not enough to make a big difference. Choose Tramontina or All Clad D3. Anything else is a waste of money. - As for carbon steel, I have only tested Ikea, DeBuyer, and Matfer. Among all, DeBuyer is the best (IMO). Together with Matfer these are my BIFL. Don't even bother to look at IKEA, they are flimsy and not worthy. I like the commercial series of Kitchen aid. The Stand mixer and Blender are perfect. I also own a Vitamix blender. All of them are BIFL. Do you have a specific utensil that you are looking for?

I buy cheap and if it breaks then I go for the bifl one. Harbor Freight tools, oxo kitchen tools. My first instant pot died on me so I got the eco pro or whatever and it’s lasted nearly a decade. My first rice cooker failed so I bought a Panasonic. However, on registry/wish list I put bifl stuff because I didn’t want people to feel bad when their gifts broke. KitchenAid mixers. Vitamix blender. Wüsthof knives. Stuff I learned about from this sub. Then a friend bought me my entire wish list. I’m set for life on many things, as is my daughter who will inherit.

Food processor recommendations?

It's got such high capacity and the two speeds are perfect for everything from delicate chopping to making dough. Plus, all the blades and disks store right in the container, which is a huge space-saver. It barely takes up any room on my counter and looks fantastic. Christmas gift from MIL
Vitamix blender, Kitchenaid mixer (or attachments for it, if I already had one), Breville automatic tea maker. I've had my Breville for 10 years of daily use and it's still going strong. Good sheets and towels. Maybe not technically buy it for life, but they'll last a good few years to a decade if you take care of them. If either of you sew, a Reliable Velocity iron. I know Rowenta is the long time gold standard, but I've used professional gravity fed systems that weren't as powerful as the Reliable. It has been going for almost a decade with no hiccups, as well.

Hand me down fiesta ware dishes that I helped my mom pick out at their tent sale over 20 years ago. My daughter was gifted a Steiff Bear when she was born and it still looks brand new at almost 10 years old and multiple washes. A hand me down Copenhagen table, the model is still sold by them and has gone through several moves across the country over 15+ years.

I found a lot of my furniture on fb marketplace for really good prices. While I don’t have and brand recs, I can say that there’s some things I wish I had prioritized when I first got an apartment a few years ago. Get good quality: -Cooking equipment (stainless steel pans, nice knives, metal/wood cooking utensils. Makes cooking and cleaning so much safer and easier) -Food storage (a bunch of reusable glass/metal containers will save you tons in the long run and is more environmentally friendly) Kitchen Aid has a lifetime guarantee on a lot of things! I’ve found their products to be quite durable. I also got a bread machine on fb marketplace (new in box) that I use quite often, it’s nice to have fresh bread around!

Secondly, keep a flashlight next to your bed, in a place you can feel for it in the dark. Lastly, buy some extra smoke detectors. I have one by the clothes dryer, in the garage and in the attic. Those things will save your life.

And, when they get dirty, I just put them in a mesh bag and throw them in the washer. Hang it outside in the sun to dry and it’s ready to use again in a few hours.

So we bought a new one when my wife began making wedding and party cakes. It's about 40 years old now. Kirby vacuums. We've got two. One I got from my late mother. Think she got it in the 70s. The other came from a widow who was moving away. All the parts are replaceable, and they clean very well.

Top BIFL Household Items for Starting Over
It depends on your priorities. If your family is very big on food and home cooking, kitchen items will be important. If you are just homebodies who want to enjoy movie nights, “home theater” items are important. Here are some thoughts: Basics - Bedding. Maybe not BIFL but quality is important - Cleaning appliances (? my brain is fried I forgot the word), like vacuums. Any broom has BIFL potential and doesn’t cost $$$$. - Dinnerware. Corelle is my favorite but sturdy dishes that can take abuse are important. Kitchen - KitchenAid stand mixer. Cheaper maybe-not-so-BIFL alternative is a dash stand mixer. - Cast iron. Super cheap and can be thrifted, just scrub the heck out of them and season for a while. Doesn’t need to be expensive. - stainless steel. Can go in dishwasher, can cook well, doesn’t die an agonizing death like nonstick. - Multi cooker. Rice cooker, instant pot, or other. Depending on your family’s needs: rice cookers can multicook (but primary function is grains), instant pot is great for “quick” cooking or slow cooking or dry beans, and a crock pot is a classic. - wood cutting boards, not bamboo. Take care of it (end or edge grain) and it will last forever. I like my Sonder LA boards and don’t recommend Teak brand. One size for large batch cooking or rolling dough, one size for everyday and if you are bougie one size for quickly cutting things like apples. - Knives. Doesn’t need to be expensive! I have two babish knives and I’m pretty sure they will last forever. I also have a paring knife from a 99 cent store set that brings new meaning to the word survivor. Don’t forget to sharpen them. Shopping - Thrift stores - Buy Nothing groups - facebook marketplace - Etsy or ebay, depending - surplus stores Considerations - can you get a cheaper version and live with it until you can do BIFL? - can you wait to purchase it without worrying about tariff-induced price issues? - can you get it secondhand?

We had one of those for fifteen years. Nobody liked using it so maybe twice a year it came out to play. Everyone really hated creaming butter in it or dealing with cookie and cake mixes. It’s a good bread mixer. Finally this Xmas I bit the bullet, gave it away to a friend and bought a KA mixer. That thing gets used twice a week and the house is full of good smells. Just an anecdote, I don’t bake much but the rest of the family does.

What’s something you’ve had so long it feels like it’s legally part of your family
I have the same Corningware baking dishes that my grandparents got for their wedding in 1961, well the ones my grandma didn't break. I've since found most of the rest of the collection at thrift stores and estate sales. I also have my great great great grandparents fine china set, originally purchased sometime in the 1800s. Again, the pieces that survived my grandma at least. Replacing those pieces has proved to be much more difficult and expensive than the Corning ware. I have the same pots and pans set my great grandma gave my parents for their wedding in 1989, and when my grandma passed, I inherited her set as well. I also inherited her vintage KitchenAid mixer. I've been lugging around a 1960s-70s Kenmore sewing machine since my mom found it at the flea market 21 years ago. I have since acquired a modern sewing machine and a 1952 singer. The two vintage machines are going to be projects this summer since the Kenmore has never been serviced in my ownership (I didn't know I needed to until I started sewing again two years ago) and the singer was a thrift store find this year. I have multiple blankets and doilies made by my great grandma. That includes my and my brothers baby blankets, ones I stole from my parents as a kid, and ones that I inherited after my grandma passed.

Do you know what failed? Stand mixers are fairly simple, and most of the parts are easily replaced. Even replacing the motor is fairly easy, and way cheaper than replacing the whole machine. It may still be worth saving. Don't believe anyone online who tells you that new KitchenAids are meaningfully different from old ones of the same model. This has been tested to hell and back, and the consensus among people who actually taken them apart and tested multiple machines side by side is that there aren't major detectable differences. People's experiences are generally with individual machines, and I'm just extremely hesitant to rely on any anecdote with a sample size of one, especially when you consider that people who are happy with their machines probably aren't complaining about it online, and people who were unhappy with older machines didn't have internet forums to complain in. (FWIW, I have no complaints with my newer mixer. I wouldn't subject it to bagel dough, but it handles pizza dough just fine. I keep it over 70-75% hydration to be safe.) The worm gear, the single plastic moving part inside the mixer, which people online love to claim used to be metal and is now plastic, was actually ALWAYS plastic, and for the good reason that it is designed to fail under slightly less stress than it would take burn out the motor. It's a simple and cheap part that is designed to protect the most expensive component of the machine.

So, I’ll ask…WHAT died? Because if it’s the motor, you’re SOL. By that - I mean - the motor CAN be replaced, but it’s 200 some-odd dollars for a replacement motor. At that point, it doesn’t make sense vs buying a new mixer entirely. If it’s ANYTHING ELSE that’s dead, then please spend a bit of time on youtube and see if it’s something that can be replaced. Really, the only way to actually kill one of these KA mixers is to kill the motor. And at that point, it’s still repairable. I make a LOT of bread. There’s so much about spiral mixers, this that and the other thing, blah blah blah. Honestly? Get another KA. YES a spiral mixer is better for breads, but your 1996 KA is nearly 30 years old. My KA is nearly 15 years old, regreased it this winter, and it’s still kicking ass strong. Tearing the entire thing down to rebuild it is doable with a basic set of tools (hammer, screwdriver, punch). I beat the snot out of it kneading bread all the time, flour flyhing everywhere - you probably did too. I’d rather another KA that I can also use for making pasta, whipping cream, making butter, frosting, etc - than a spiral mixer which does bread better, but everything else not-as-good. Also, way more expensive and way bigger footprint. Long of the short: Replace what’s broken if it’s not the motor. If it IS the motor, get another KA mixer. PS - I recommend the KA SS attachment set + a spiral bread hook. My whole shebang goes into the dishwasher, and the SS ones vs the enameled ones are top notch.

Find an older model. I have one that my mom gifted to me for my bridal shower in 1977. It still works perfectly, but I decided to get a larger one and bought it at Sam’s. The quality is nowhere near the same, many of the parts are plastic and it’s overall cheaply made. I returned it and kept my old one.

Electric stainless steel kettle?
I love my gooseneck Stagg from Fellow. It’s out of budget at $200, but if you ever want to upgrade in the future, it’s a phenomenal kettle. I had an issue with it heating a couple months after I received it (new) as a gift and Fellow replaced the complete setup immediately, no questions asked. Like you, my mom prefers the wide pouring version over a gooseneck so I got her a kitchenaid one a few years back. She uses it daily and it’s still in great condition, never had any issues with it. It cost around $100, but I’m sure you can find it on sale at some point for $70-$80.

Having worked in hospitality if you are going to buy a mixer buy a kitchen aid for the following reasons It’s a metal exterior and can be opened easily enough. Maintenance is easy and it’s metal parts inside. Because of the popularity of them lots of places will service them for you long after the warranty. I know people who have had kitchen aids for decades.

Everything goes in the dishwasher, except the wok. I’m careful that the knives don’t touch each other, but that’s it. I also have a well-seasoned cast iron pan, but I never use it because I don’t like the metallic taste.

All parts for the motor and motor control are available through certain appliance parts retailers. Since the mechanical design and the chassis design hasn’t changed since the 1930s the motors are completely interchangeable for every residential KitchenAid since the Model K. I've been wrong before. I opened 3 in close succession, and the motors were different, not interchangable, it was the same with the speed controlling circuitry. The ones I opened up were not old ones, they were 1990's - 2016 or so (as far as I recall) I suspect that is a difference in our experience. I could not find replacement parts but maybe my searching was insufficient. The gear train seemed the same. I did not try to swap them though. The older ones, the Hobart built ones, probably still have a parts available. I believe that. They are AWESOME and nobody in their right mind will let go of theirs.

My cuisinart has served me well over the last 20 years. I honestly wouldn’t use anything else. If you grind any of your own meat, I highly recommend a kitchenaid mixer with the grinder attachment. I like to do my own ground chicken because I have better control of the quality and the fat content.

Unpopular Opinion: “Researching Before Buying” as an Excuse for Overthinking
This is why I thrift. My BIL (brother in law, I didn’t miss an F lol) does a lot of great research on big purchases like knives. Meanwhile I’m buying my decent knives literally one knife at a time; I posted about a CUTCO knife here one because I love it more than my “better” brand knives and this sub tore me a new one but it’s still my favorite knife. I also have a quality steel KitchenAid made in Germany with a hefty tine I’ll be resharpening for the next decade, and a Chicago Cutlery bread knife I might take to my grave. For each of these I have 2-3 knives I tried and didn’t “cut it” (literally), I just donate those. My cookware is Le Creuset or thrifted, I have only two exceptions (3-ply SS IKEA 360 pot) and off-brand Hexclad (Snowclad) frying pan. My dinnerware is Corelle or Lennox Fine China. My partyware, bowls are all vintage borosilicate glass: Anchor Hocking, PYREX, ARCOROC pink swirl. I don’t own any glassware of any kind that isn’t borosilicate. My tea set is moss rose (mixed porcelain makers, same pattern). I do not use paper plates or bowls ever, I own plenty of reusable vintage pieces. If I can attach an appliance to my KitchenAid stand mixer I will do that before buying yet another thing. I have a spiralizer, meat grinder, and pasta maker. All of my utensils are vintage (including Cutco! lol), excellent quality high temp silicone, or wooden. I use a wooden spoon or spatula every single day because hardwood has barely been improved upon. For clothing I require 50% minimum natural fibers such as cotton, wool, and linen. I don’t count rayon unless it is labeled organic. I read all the fabric labels and can thrift by feel, like I never mistake a polyester sweater for wool and can feel different cotton blends. Natural fibers last longer, and my wardrobe is like 75% thrifted. I also thrift BIFL boots and shoes, which generally don’t exist but better boots last a very long time and have exchangeable parts like boot liners and insulated soles so there is rarely a need to buy new. To each their own but I’m mostly here to learn about what things last so I can then thrift those things or find them on Marketplace.

Suggestion for new Fridge.
I have a kitchen aid double door with no ice or water on the outside. There is a water dispenser on the inside and ice in the bottom. I bought it almost 10 years ago and have had only one issue with the ice maker that was cheap to fix. I love it. I hope it lasts forever. I think the best approach is to figure out what is important to you personally when it comes to fridge things and avoid any company that doesn't focus on appliances. Oh and I agree with others saying to get the extended warranty even if only for peace of mind.

In cookware a cast iron pan is easily the lowest cost thing I can think of that will be BIFL. A good stainless steel pan will be BIFL. Faribault wool blankets. Stormy Kromer double mackinaw coat. Dehen1920 sweaters. I agree with the other poster about KitchenAid stand mixers, a good chef's knife, and carbon steel woks. I'm not sure if Filson has kept up their quality but I have had tin cloth heavy waxed cotton bib overalls and a packer coat for many years and they are really tough. Most people don't want wood furniture anymore and you can get entire dining room sets made out of oak or cherry for a few hundred bucks on places like NextDoor or OfferUp. Some of these sets are 50 years old and will last another 100 years if given basic care.

KitchenAid Stand Mixer. My bike is definitely way more expensive, and I think I probably could get a lifetime out of it if I keep it well maintained and replace parts... I didn't buy it with the intention of keeping it for life, though. I bought it to use the crap out of it. With threats of road accidents, theft, heavy damage due to wear or corrosion, and just the fact that technology advances.... Couldn't say that I'll still have the exact same one in 20 years. I also have some more expensive camera gear that I expect to last a good long time, but the expensive stuff is electronic and will fail eventually and probably not be reparable on a long timeline. The fully manual stuff is true BIFL, but doesn't cost very much.

Step 1. Don't listen to the people telling you expensive ass names in this forum. Step 2. Look up stainless steel tools with no hinges. Example. KitchenAid has a solid stainless spatula. Same with Blackstone having tons with no hinge. Lol "Vollrath" I bet their tongs are $70. A ten dollar pair of tongs will last forever if they are simply solid stainless. I've had mine for a decade and they work great, because there's nothing to break, it's a curved piece of metal.

Purchased this refurbished omega juicer about 8 years ago. Hundreds of pounds of of produce juiced without any issues.
Omega cold presses the juice at slow speed. This keeps the enzymes within the juice still active increasing nutrient value. High speed juicers create heat with the speed/friction. I have the same model. Great machine. Ranks up there with a Vitamix blender or Kitchen Aid mixer.

It's 100% worth it, and doable. With routine maintenance and repairs as needed, these run for decades. Smoke usually comes from the phase control board. You can clean it up with isopropyl alcohol and a soft cloth and put the mixer back to work. However, the oil separation is an indicator for routine maintenance, so I recommend cleaning and regreasing the gears reasonably soon. I literally trash picked one of these when I was living in a condo area and a neighbor passed away. The dumpster area was basically overrun with belongings no one cared about. That was almost 10 years ago. It was jammed and I got it working in less than 2 hours. Just needed to pop the top off and re-grease it. Still use it to this day. Fun fact: KitchenAid recommends greasing your stand mixer once a year, or if oil leaks from the chrome Planetary Ring. So if it's 25 years old and you've never done that you're waaaaaay past due. It was probably just a matter of time before something stressed it out too much.

in those mixers, the gearing overheats first. what's smoking is in fact grease. my sister runs 3 of those in her restaurant and once in a while some doofus burns through one. i've opened a bunch of them and never saw a motor, cabling or switches damaged. there's a very good chance regreasing is all that's needed. they're surprisingly resilient machines.

The smoke probably indicates that the brushes are worn out. Hopefully, he didn't melt the windings of the motor. That Kitchenaid is worth repairing as long as the motor winding is good. Lots of videos on YouTube that can walk you through the repair. A couple of screw drivers is about all the tools needed. Get some new brushes, and a grease kit. You don't have a lot to lose attempting to repair it. But a replacement mixer would cost $400, maybe more.

I also got my kitchen aid for free when someone decided it was too noisy and upgraded. They were like “we got it for our wedding and it probably will keep working for a few years for you” and I was like “i will die with this still in my possession” those things are definitely bifl but easy enough to find second hand with some effort.

I rebuilt an even older one recently. The stuff dripping out is burnt grease that liquified. You can order “food grease for kitchenaid” on amazon. Take the top cover off, clean the old browned grease out (you’ll need lots of paper towels and q-tips) and repack the gears with the new stuff after cleaning.

My wife had an Artisan from before we were married. It eventually started stuttering/skipping and dripping grease. Found out that kitchen aid puts a wearable plastic gear on the mixer spindle to save the metal gear attached to the motor. Took 15 years to wear down that gear and the grease it was packed in. I replaced the gear and grease in about a half an hour, less than $50 for the gear and grease shipped (it was years ago, can’t remember the price exactly). Only sold it to get a bigger mixer.

Totally fixable. Mr mixer and other YouTubers have great videos tutorials with links to the right parts and tools you need. Last month I replaced a couple gears on mine and regreased. You likely already have all the tools needed. Maybe you will have to buy a punch, but those are cheep.

Like many others have said here, it's def worth trying. There are tons of guides to repairing these, and they're on the easier side for DIY repairs. It's worth a shot, anyway. Worst case scenario, it remains broken and you still have to buy a new one. Just be sure to unplug it before attempting to make the repairs!

Yes. And you absolutely should. It will outlast you if you even do a half-assed service it from time to time. I've got 30 on mine, rebuilt it once when my kid did the same thing as yours, I think I might have wiped some batter off the casing once or twice, but really that's it.

Literally everything except socks and underwear, or something where the new price is not something worth worrying about, like a nalgene bottle or similar. I scored a literally free Kitchenaid Pro mixer with all the attachments; just needed to have its brushed reinstalled correctly. Lots of deals like that are out there - our consumer society is too lazy or busy to repair anything, so if you don't need something to be absolutely unblemished, lots of deals are out there if you are willing to put in a little effort.

Certain items? Absolutely. I used to go through 4 pairs of socks a year at around 5 bucks each. I spent $100 on Darn Tough socks 5 years ago and haven't bought a new pair of socks since (though I did get a couple for Christmases.). So that's cost neutral and the difference is I have 5 pairs of Darn Tough Socks that are gonna last me another 5 years. Others? I probably would've never burned out my cheap shitty stand mixer, but my girlfriend wants a KitchenAid and I found a good deal. So now I'm out $250 and my stand mixer will never burn out.

My parents are big buy it for lifers, without realizing it. They think, and pass on to me that you buy quality and take care of your things. So I totally see it being cost effective for them… granted they acquired most of their stuff in the early 1980s. For kitchen stuff, they still use regularly the all clad pots and pans, kitchen aid stand mixer and food processor, and the dishes they got from their wedding registry. The dishes have been in production for years so when something breaks, they can just buy one to replace it as well as being able to add on to their collection as needed over the years. They also have a set of silverware (with the years and names of people who gave them pieces engraved on them) that they use as everyday cutlery. All of the furniture in their house is beautiful and has a story and has been with for most of their 40 marriage. My sister and my’s childhood bedrooms are still functional today because when it came time to buy our “big kid furniture” they chose quality pieces that would serve needs 20+ years from when they bought it. They also bought matching towels for their and our bathroom and only replace them once every 20ish years. I’ve only seen new towels at their house once when they redid the kid bathroom and they’ll get new towels for their bathroom as they’re redoing it currently. It was 20 and 25 years respectively between remodels and new towel purchases.

I think bifl items save money in some areas but it can be hard to know when actually buying the product. I bought a pair of White’s boots 15 years ago that I still wear a few times a week. They have been fantastic. I was gifted a Tag Heuer watch 27 years ago that is still going strong. It has got to have saved me some money vs buying a new watch every few years. I got my first cast iron skillet 20+ years ago. It has def saved me from purchasing teflon coated pans. The Kitchen Aid stand mixer that we have is going on 19 years old. I think it depends on your spending habits too. If you buy a bifl product to replace something that still works…

Best Air Fryers to Buy?
I have owned two Cosori air fryers (one 13 & 1 air fryer toaster oven & one 5.8 quart) for 6 years & they are still going like champs 6 years after the fact My husband recently purchased the KitchenAid Dual Fan air fryer toaster ovens at a steep discount ($99 - versus $289 regular price) It's a beautiful machine, but I'm 100% sure that it will not last as long as my Cosori air fryer ovens ($80-$169 depending on the model)

They have always just replace them, no questions. Footwear * Asics Sneakers, they always have sales. I have to change out sneakers every 6 months because I just walk a lot and the arch support just breaks, and typically have two I switch between. Kitchen Items- * Love Oxo Brand. Middle of the road work horse. * Kitchen Aid. I have a hand mixer, still going. I know people who the stand mixer give them to their grandchildren. Tires- * I always go to Costco - They have the best pricing and offer 5 year warranty, Flat Repairs, and tire rotations in the pricing. Vaccuum- * Miele. So much more expensive, but just a workhorse.

Which stove/range should I buy?
Those are both Commodity grade stoves. Not the highest grade of appliance. That being said, I was not happy with the quality of my Frigidaire appliances and was previously much happier with my Whirlpool range (they own KitchenAid, it’s their upmarket brand). The KitchenAid oven is also really big, bigger than most others (that Frigidaire included).

The best old food processors are the original KitchenAid, made in France by Robot Coupe. The motors are cheap on eBay because they don't burn out. The bowls do crack with heavy use, though.

Love this! I inherited my grandmother's k45 (the original with the older bowl) and it was working great up until Thanksgiving when the tilt lever broke. Now it needs a little bit of maintenance, but I figure it has to be from the 60s and probably never had any repairs done. I'm jealous that you have all the original beaters, though. I know for sure we had the dough hook when I was a kid, but it's been lost somewhere over the years.

We have a 20 year old Kitchenaid ice machine that didn't work when we got it for free. They retail around $2500, so we put about $100 into a new solenoid valve. It is nearly our very favorite thing and I think if it ever got to where we couldn't repair it, we would replace it. They're like your basic tub washing machine: intended to live forever, pretty much the same across brands and 50+ years and can almost always be repaired.

Head's up, those who find a kitchenaid mixer in a color they don't like---> you can take the fittings off very easily and then spray paint the mixer in a color you prefer. I googled the process, followed directions, and it turned out great. I've now got a color I like for the price of a couple cans of paint.

Cast iron skillet and stainless sauce pans. I'm still using cast iron from the 1940s (that I purchased in the 80s), and we've had the same set of mid-level stainless pans for over 30 years now. I think they are KitchenAid or Cuisinart, nothing fancy really. We cook at lot, use them every day. Don't mess with anything coated or non-stick, and also no need to spend $$$ on pans either in my experience.

This! The problem with determining this for a lot of people that don't realize/pay attention is that they don't know it's going to last until it does. Like yeah, there are outliers like a non coated cast iron pan is more than likely going to last even if it's an inexpensive one, but they don't realize there may be a reason for the breakage as well. Take for example KitchenAid stand mixers, they now have an inexpensive part/s that breaks before more expensive portions do, but they still break easier than previously so people that aren't inclined to repair/have them repaired think less of them as a result.

Old Kenmore's are about as reliable as appliances get. Modern Samsung or LG are awful. GE, kitchenaid, and a few more brands still bake basic fridges that should last much better.

Funny you say that. We bought our house 26 years ago and at the time it had a fairly small KitchenAid fridge in the kitchen. We moved it to the basement and bought a new one. A quarter century later that original fridge is still going strong and yet we are on our fourth replacement in the kitchen. And yeah…old appliance efficiency yada yada…still more efficient than buying four fridges in 20 years.

Wow. I just had to replace my dough hook after about four years because the enamel was falling off it all over (got a third party stainless steel one that is waaaaay better). I do use it for dough at least once a week though.

There is a LOT of info out there, but the general consensus is those made by Hobart-KitchenAid pre-1985 are better made then Whirlpool-KitchenAid made after 1986. I'd buy a used model like yours before a new model.

These things are great. I have found a few in the scrap metal that were just fine. A couple needed new cords, a couple were fine, and the one we use all the time i redid the grease. Nice machine.

These are really expensive but Breville toaster oven, zojirushi rice cooker, vitamix blender and immersion blender, le cruset Dutch oven, 3D printer, kitchenaid stand mixer and accessories, Brother printer, all Clad pots. A lot of these companies have refurbished options you can ask for. I think any of these items would be great secondhand.

Not all appliances but kitchen related: A nice Dutch oven (I like Staub). Kitchenaid mixer. Vitamix blender. Zojirushi rice cooker. Crockpot. Instapot. Tramontina tri-ply stainless steel pans. Shun chef knife. A good air fryer if that’s your thing. Staub casserole dish set. These all get heavy use in my kitchen and I plan/hope to have them forever or at least a very long time.

1. My great grandmother’s Griswold skillet. It’s an early Erie from the 1890s, so in use for over 130 years. you can find them on eBay for $300, or a small logo 8 for way cheaper. 2. Fiestaware. Bought new in 2007, not a single dish broken even though I’m a klutz. 3. It’s super hard for me to come up with something sold today because so much of it is garbage. So I’m going to go with my Kitchenaid. I’ve heard there’s issues with replacement parts, but it hasn’t happened to me so far. A regret is every light fixture I’ve bought with an integrated LED. They never last long for me, and they are just expensive bricks when they die.

Regular blenders are such a pain to clean, especially for smaller jobs like sauces and soups. An immersion blender is a great solution. You can just stick it straight into the pot, blend, and rinse it off. Way less hassle. For brands, it depends on what you need: Braun MultiQuic has super solid blenders and they feel really well-built. They’re powerful enough for tough jobs and come with a bunch of attachments, but they’re on the pricier side. KitchenAid is great if you’re mostly doing lighter tasks like soups or dressings. It’s not as powerful as Braun but it’s reliable and looks nice if that matters Mueller Immersion Blender is a good middle ground—affordable but still sturdy. It’s got multiple speeds and the turbo mode is surprisingly strong. Works well for hot soups or even thicker stuff like hummus Whatever you go with, make sure it has a stainless-steel blending arm (plastic ones can crack over time) and detachable parts for easy cleaning. I’d personally recommend Mueller. It’s reliable and doesn’t cost as much as Braun, but still feels sturdy enough to last. Perfect if you want something versatile without breaking the bank.

Absolutely not. As someone who is educated in appliance’s I can say Bosch is the same as everyone else selling dishwashers, they are very computerized and prone to electronic failure. They aren’t what they were 15 years ago unfortunately as Bosch used to be quite reliable of a brand. This writer is looking for something that will actually last without repair for several years and won’t be prone to electronic failure. The only dishwasher in America we still have that meets their criteria is the Whirlpool Powerclean module dishwashers made from 1985-2011 which includes Kenmore Ultrawash dishwashers, Kitchenaids Inglis Estate some Maytags made within that timeframe. They had big induction motors that cleaned and dried dishes within an hour and the latest versions weren’t even very loud with a tuned sound absorber whirlpool installed, they had a truly self cleaning filter module unlike any other dishwasher & they were notoriously reliable. I have two that are still running, they just never give up on their owners and everyone within the appliance enthusiast and experts community will tell you this is the go to machine for strong reliability and high performance. The only shit there is with them is that you can’t buy them new anymore obviously as they were discontinued in 2011 and if you were to have an issue like needing a new rack or a new control panel or motor it can be replaced very easily and there’s so many parts still available for them it’s all about how you go and find a used one you must inspect it & ensure it’s in good condition still as you would buying anything used.

Vitamix blender. KitchenAid mixer. Nice set of cast iron: skillets, bread pan, Dutch oven. If you buy enameled cast iron, look for Staub over Le creuset, the enamel coating lasts longer.

In that budget I’d go KitchenAid (owned by Whirlpool) as they have some nice-sounding variable speed compressor on their “Preserva” equipped models that- in description- keeps more constant humidity since it doesn’t move air between the fridge and freezer. At least based on their promotional material. Their Whirlpool brand ones only have water dispensers on the inside and a more regular temp management system. Those are under 1.5K when you get their discounts. Some -not all- of their fridges have better sealing crisper drawers too. I know where you’re coming from, as most fridges these days barely seal those drawers at all. I won’t own another Electrolux-made fridge after my 2018 top-freezer fridigidare died in less than 4 years.

Stainless steel cookware recommendations?
If you want to switch to SS I’d recommend just getting one skillet you’ll use frequently- like if you regularly make eggs for example, get an 8” skillet in SS and practice on it so you get comfortable w SS. I vastly prefer it btw. I make breakfast a lot in our house and use a Kitchen Aid stainless steel skillet, it’s super satisfying to cook eggs on once you get the hang of it!

Not quite daily but my hand-me-down KitchenAid from the 80s (older than me) is still going strong. My parents got it as a wedding gift and gifted it to me when I got my house. My mom replaced it with a new KitchenAid mixer that hasn't held up as well.

Buying my first electric oven, help!
I recently did my research for a Convection Oven. Long story short, I never found my ideal oven: Quartz+ Convection big enough to fit a whole chicken (or Prime Roast Rib). I liked the Wolf brand because there's no fancy electronics. However, it's not quartz and is lined with toxic non-stick. They are wonderful. Not only reliable, but parts are cheap. I have had one for 14 years. I also bought 12 cheap used ones for $70-100 and converted them to 220v and sold them where we live in New Zealand.

KitchenAid makes a great mixer, but I'd advise new. This has a 6 month warranty; new has ten years. I had a problem with mine after maybe 3 years- they sent me a new one first with directions to put the bad one in the packaging and send it back prepaid. Their warranty service (and the assurance of a twenty-fold warranty term increase) make a new, non-refurb purchase the smart BIFL move here.
