How can a company continue to make money if their product lasts forever?
Sturdy reusable water bottles should be a buy one and be set for life (original Stanley thermoses, Klean Kanteen) but in our lovely consumption based society people want a new style of mug or bottle, a new color, etc. I saw a headline in that le creuset quality had gone down because people want to collect every color.

What BIFL mistakes have you made?
I excitedly brought home one of those decades-old green stainless steel Stanley thermoses and realized it was too big for my regular use, so I started using a Kleen Kanteen. I guess the mistake was that I’ve listed the Stanley thing for sale a bunch of times, starting at like $10 plus shipping, thinking it would be popular, but it never gets any bites lol. Will probably just donate when I get around to it.

Water bottle for my girlfriend
8 years ago I grabbed an RTIC water bottle and (here is the key) FOUR SPARE LIDS. I am on my second lid and the brand has changed lid designs at least once. Any stainless water bottle will be around forever. The plastic components, springs, straws and so on will be what fails. RTIC, KLEAN KANTEEN, YETI will all serve you well as long as you buy spares of the parts that can fail.

I have a small power bank in my car. I throw it on the charger every 4 months to keep it topped up. I have a led usbA tab that I can attach to this to make it into a flashlight. I also have 1 flashlight in the trunk and one ready to be used in the glove compartment. Both use a single AA battery. I keep a pair of AA lithium batteries in the trunk and note the expiration date. Alternatively, you can buy a flashlight that takes an AA or a rechargable AA sized battery. The battery can be plugged directly to you a usb c cable to charge. Mora, stainless steel. They make it in carbon as well but I dont want to have to check it every few months to make sure it hasn't rusted. 2x 55gallon drum liner... many uses for this thing Water in a 40oz Klean Kanteen in the trunk. I dump this out every few months. I keep a filter too. I like the Klean Kanteen single wall becuase you can use it to boil if need be. Tourniquet in the glove box extra clothes and shoes that are comfortable if you have to hike it. tools webbing straps bic lighter and ferro rod.. some tinder like fat wood.

Use any stainless steel bottle you want. Kleen Kanteen has been mentioned. A friend has one and it seems like a good option. Personally I use a larger Stanley thermos for tea at work. After my shift I rinse it out with clear water and give the cap a quick wash with a sponge and soapy water. It doesn’t take much longer than loading up the dishwasher. Every so often, especially if the inside gets patina from the tea I put a small spoonfull of dishwasher powder in the thermos and fill it up with boiling water. Leave it over night, rinse with clean water in the morning, it’s as good as new. What I‘m trying to say is, you don’t have to worry about mold too much if you give it a quick rinse every evening and the dishwasher powder like once a week or so. Having to use you dishwasher every evening (especially if it’s only for the bottle) will be a bigger hassle and more expensive over time.

if you are the type of person who doesn't wash their water bottle after every use (not making a judgment), do not let your mouth touch the bottle. drink by pouring into your mouth. it gets less nasty that way. the first thing to smell kinda moldy is the silicone ring that provides the seal on most bottle lids. if that happens, you can gently remove it and soak it in vinegar; make sure you don't damage it with something sharp, because you'll create cuts and holes for more mold and bacteria to grow. after that, any dishwasher-safe steel bottle will fit your needs. kleen kanteen, yeti, etc.

The TKwide loop has a metal bottom so that no plastic is touching any hot liquids inside. I think Klean Kanteen, hydroflask and yeti all use the same standard parts as well so if you want something that comes with a built in all metal cup you might be able to to use a hydroflask hot flask with a klean kanteen stopper. The hot flask only goes to 36oz/1L though, but I'd still look at all three brands to see where you can get the best deal on what are basically all the same parts.

I got a couple yetis when I was working 12 hour shifts in a factory. I think I got them in 2018 and I still really like them and use them at the warehouse job I’m at now. I’m more likely to use my Klean Kanteen on a hike or day trip because it’s light weight and holds more liquid.

I still have Nalgenes from decades ago, and insulated thermoses. From the more recent bottle explosions, I prefer Klean Kanteens for durability and swapping out lids. For non-insulated, anything with an Avex cap as they are spill resistant and usually come with a “safety” to truly leak-proof it.

I switched to KleanKanteen several months ago (I was stubbornly still using plastic bottles that were old enough to be called vintage now 🙈) and I love them!! I got the non-insulated ones because I wanted the lid with the flip-up drinking spout and as far as spout lids go it's very solid! Larger than other spouts I've seen so it's got a good flow, works without the straw, and doesn't leak, even when it's full and laying flat somewhere. It does leak the water that was still in the spout though if you flip it back too quickly after taking a drink, I'm still learning that one 😂 I really love the little carry loop they have on their lids as well. Very sturdy, easy to hang something off to differentiate bottles if needed, and (if you don't have any issues with your hands) it means you can carry it with one finger to leave your hands free for other things it you've got multiple things to move. I carry mine everywhere so that's ended up being my favourite feature.

My 40oz Hydroflask is about ten years old. I use it with a "Wide Flex Chug Cap" when mobile so I can drink out of it without spilling [in the car]. I use the standard top for air travel because it reduces the height by an inch or so. I use a 30oz Yeti Rambler around the house as my water/tea glass. My whole family has older (~8-10yr) Kleen Kanteen 20oz bottles with a sort of sippy lid they don't make anymore that we use for hot tea/coffee when hiking/camping/sports. The only bottles we've purchased recently are smaller Rambler tumblers for my wife & daughters and a large Rambler tumbler with handle for my son, and my older daughter has been using an Owala bottle as her daily (that she received as a birthday present from a school friend). I see no reason any of these bottles won't last arbitrarily long assuming none are physically destroyed. Overall, we're very happy with both Hydroflask & Yeti (and Owala if you like straw bottles) -- both are a cut above Kleen Kanteen in quality.

Side story: when I was a little kid I thought it would be cool to have a white gas can as a water bottle. Note: I have never bothered with insulated bottles, and I am very sensitive to the smell and taste of plastic. For home and shopping, I love and prefer the [BKR](https://mybkr.com/) I picked up for $5, but it is cumbersome for hikes and workouts. For active lifestyle stuff, I used a [KOR Delta](https://www.korwater.com/products/delta?variant=42939831582819) for around ten years, but the lid finally gave out. Hinge broke as I used it. The timing was fine since I have been trying to limit plastic. The replacement will be a [Klean Kanteen Reflect](https://www.kleankanteen.com/products/plastic-free-water-bottle-27oz). I sincerely believe this will be my final on-the-go water bottle purchase. In my experience and for my needs, the only truly reliable bottles have been simple screw-cap glass ones, some with silicone sleeves, some without. Again, though, they are not great if you are running around outside or in a gym. KOR bottles are the only plastic ones I have ever liked, but even they impart the vile plasticky scent and flavour after some use, particularly in warm weather. And, of course, moving parts on a plastic lid like the Delta's are a point of failure.

I went through several swell and hydro flasks but in clumsy and was constantly dropping and denting them. I’ve had a Klean Kanteen for like 6 years now. It leaks a touch but it’s worth it for a decently sustainably made double insulation bottle, color hasn’t scratched a ALL and this thing gets dropped a lot, good handle, easy to take apart to clean throughly and my straw isn’t just hole to the wind when not in use.

Ya know, I've got Kleen Kanteen (and/or some similar-ish alternative brands or knock-offs) - your basic metal water bottle with a well fitting screw-in top/stopper ... and at that, various types of tops/stoppers. And you know what ... I didn't buy a single one of 'em. People seem to lose 'em or give 'em away every once in a while ... I think I've got a half-dozen or more of 'em now. Some of the cheap knock-offs have crud threading and tops - avoid those. But all the rest seem perfectly fine. And I'm guessing they're BIFL. Though not totally indestructible, they're pretty dang durable. "Biggest" issue I've had, and it's only minor. sometimes I drop the dang thing onto a hard surface (rock, floor, cement, whatever) when it's got fair bit of water in it, it dents the bottom a bit, then it doesn't sit flat. Well, that's an easy fix - some gentle whacks to the bottom with a rubber mallet, and then that's again quite flat enough and all is fine. And given how durable they are, I'd say I probably have more than a lifetime supply of 'em at this point. So, yeah, ... *I* should probably start giving some of 'em away at this point. And, you know what? For the most part I don't find a lot of plastic water bottles that folks are giving away that are in good shape. Though there are some good/better quality ones (a friend did give me one nice quite large one, I believe Nalgene 1.5L, I sometimes take and use it, but especially with that weight when relatively full, I'm always concerned I might dro and crack it), I think a lot of 'end up broken (e.g. dropped and cracked) - so that's probably why I see far fewer of those being given away - I don't think they last as long/well ... at least with heavy use and the occasional accidental drop or the like. There's also the flexible bladder type bottles. I have a very small number of those, and they may be handy for some things, but I don't think they're that durable - so I wouldn't call 'em BIFL, though some may be significantly better and longer lasting (better quality) than others. I think I'd probably only use 'em for lighter more casual use, and probably wouldn't be inclined to rely heavily upon them.

I’ve had three replacements: Original one developed a rust spot First replacement lost thermal properties after a twelve inch drop Second did not have thermal properties when new Third replacement is fine after about three months use. Replacements are hassle free. You have to send a video of someone using a sharpie to write on it “warranty - do not replace” I appreciate their guarantee but it is frustrating that they have failed this much. My uninsulated Klean kanteen is 15+ years old and is fine.

I have a Klean Kanteen. I think the key is by a stainless steel water bottle that does not have paint on it. This way there is no paint to chip when you’ve dent it a little bit. My water bottle has a couple of dents, but I think it just adds to the character. It still looks nice and functions really well.

Longest? I have Nalgenes I bought in the 1980s still. They are yellowed but work. But I don't use them much anymore. My favorites now are all Yeti, Hydroflask, RTIC, and Kleen Kanteen. Every one was thrifted, so cost my $6 or less. All are basically the same insulated stainless construction; the only meaningful differences are the tops. They work great. I have a bunch since I keep them at home, at work, in the truck, and we're using them with the entire family. That said, I have a dozen or more that need to go to Goodwill, mostly plastic ones I'll never use again. Most of those were gimmes from work or conferences.

So dish soap and a bottle brush is cheap as all get out…. I have Klean Kanteen, Nalgene, no name, etc. brand bottles and I just wash them every week or so. Takes less than 5 minutes to wash a bottle….. and I don’t consider myself a very talented or smart man.

Plastic-free water bottle, REALLY watertight, can be used with one hand, 750ml
Well as far as Stainless goes I love Klean Kanteen. I am hard on my bottles and I just recently put my first dent in one I have had for about a year and a half. And it took me dropping it 1/2 full (32oz). They do make a plastic free one. But I don’t think it’s 1 hand compatible. The one that I have has plastic in the lid, but one of the reasons why I really liked it is that the entire lid comes completely apart and you can maintenance it so you can actually just buy a whole new lid if the plastic breaks or it gets too disgusting and you can’t clean it all the way. I am pretty sensitive to tastes in my water, and haven’t had an issue with mine. Also the models with straws are stainless straws. So that’s another favorite feature of mine. I hope this helps somewhat! Sorry it doesn’t tick all the boxes.

It's used nearly every day, and of 5 different stainless bottles/cups/ mugs, still has it's logo, and is still mostly dent free. I don't know about the quality now, but it's a tank!

How are the threads on the Yeti? I have a Miir but the threads are too fine, leading to misthreads and I'm even worried the threads will wear out or strip if I screw the lid on wrong. I like the fat threads on the Klean Kanteen uninsulated bottles, but the insulated ones seem to have fine threads. I also like bottles that have more than 1 thread, so you can screw the lid on from multiple orientations (180 degrees or 120 degrees with 3 threads).

Used same Nalgene for 13 years simce college and it has been through a lot! Finally on its 3 millionth fall on a bathroom tile floor, it broke! lol didn't even know it was possible for it to smash like that. Anyway, after scouring the internet as well, settled for a 64oz insulated klean kanteen all metal (cap is silicone interior and plastic exterior) extra wide mouth bottle. I engraved it too! Hope this one lasts another 10+ years as well!

That’s why I have had one Nalgene and one insulated 18oz Klean Kanteen for like 10 years. I just recently added a 64oz insulated Klean Kanteen to keep in my car to refill my child’s summer water bottle (kids these days are intensely hydrated), and a 36oz insulated straw cup Klean Kanteen for myself because I got tired of fumbling with the screw cap on my bottle every time I was thirsty in the car (which is 2.5 hours a day) and of running out constantly. Hopefully these two new additions will keep lasting me a long time like my other two.

I think you already have your answer, but I can shove you there maybe. That isn’t a concern for you though, and I’ve been quickly adjusting to it since I am really happy to still get 27oz without it being massive like they get with the double wall. I’ve been really happy with it so far. If you are super tight on the 100% stainless, you can also get this cap with it: https://www.kleankanteen.com/products/stainless-loop-cap But it still has the silicone gasket, most stuff does. Think you will be hard pressed to find anything that doesn’t have it and doesn’t leak. The stainless taste is there, but it will be with anything you get 100% stainless. I had very similar goals/requirements as you, and so far have been happy.

Most stainless steel ones will be good. I'd recommend a relatively popular brand such that it's easy to get new lids or seals down the line if you ever need. Mine are IronFlask and I like them, but HydroFlask, Klean Kanteen, Yeti (I actually work down the street from their HQ!) are also all good. I'm sure there are others that are also good! You'll need to clean them occasionally regardless of brand. Not doing so will make them stink, but if they do stink they can all be cleaned of that easily. If you get mold, a little bleach can clean it. Just don't let it sit since it's caustic. Denture cleaning tablets are very good at cleaning them in general. For a mild clean, just soap and water.

I second Klean Kanteen. Ive owned many water bottles (including a gifted stanley) and my klean kanteen is my go to on the go water bottle. Technically my stanley keeps things colder for longer but its not leak proof so I only use it at home.

I have ~20yo Kleen Kanteens. They may have some dents, but their simple integrity holds & the lids are replaceable if you somehow break (or more likely lose) them. That said, I drink more when I have my owala bottle because the lid & straw are so easy. Mine seems in great condition a couple years in, but it’s obviously got more plastic & moving parts so likely not bifl.

I have a hydroflask that is still going strong after 5+ years. One dent at the bottom but otherwise in great condition. Before I had a Klean Kanteen which is also still in great condition but my mom uses it now. That one is at least 12 years old. Hydroflask insulates better and in a larger size but both have worked great for me.

Durable reusable water bottles for youth event—best BIFL options under budget?
Nalgene are standard and tough. A lot of backpackers like to fill it with hot water at night and sleep with it between their legs on a cold night. I also personally like a non-insulated classic klean kanteen. Durable and if you needed a pot to boil water, this could double as it non-insulated/single wall. Also, if you like the flip top drink like owala, you can replace the klean kanteen standard cap with a flip top straw one.

Klean Kanteen, Hydroflask or Yeti. Yeti: I love the chug cap on Yetis, but they are heavier, don't hold as much volume for the size, and IMO don't hold temp as well (very marginal difference). They do seem more durable than Hydroflask or Klean Kanteen. Did i mention how much i love the chug cap. If hydroflask or Klean Kanteen had a similiar cap, i'd switch. Hydroflask: they come with a lifetime warranty (or at least they used to so double check), super light, but not as durable IMO. Klean Kanteen: more durable than Hydroflask and insulates super well. They are also a Certified B Corp if that matters to you.

Looking for insulated 1 liter water bottle
I have a few brands you could check out: Hydroflask, Kleen Kanteen, Camelbak (vacuum insulated bottles). I have dropped all three brands from about 6ft high. They are dented and dinged. The only issues I’ve had with them are the tops (plastic) which ultimately break. Key to keeping them hot or cold is to “charge” before use. I feel like a lot of people get upset with time span of hot/cold. For coffee: I fill it with boiled water and let it sit (with the lid on) while the coffee brews. From ~6:30 to 5PM I still have hot/warm coffee (depending on if I remember to close the lid afterwards). For cold: I either pop it in the freezer for 20 minutes, or fill it with ice. I generally only put water in it. Sometimes I’ll mix in a liquid IV. Avoid straight stainless steel bottles. You want to look for vacuum insulated.

If you want to avoid plastic completely, go for stainless steel inside and out. The Owala FreeSip stainless (not the plastic version) is solid, but if you want something more minimal, look at Klean Kanteen or the YETI Rambler bottles. Both are tough, insulated, and no plastic touching the water. Just double check the lid, some have small silicone or plastic seals, but no plastic contact with the water itself.

I will third this recommendation. I too prefer a straw for cold drinks, and Klean Kanteen has perfected this with three different styles of straw caps. We have: - TKWide: a 16oz and a 20oz, with café and twist cap respectively. The lids are cross-compatible, but I generally stick with the 20oz + twist for cold drinks, and the 16oz + café for hot drinks. I use these when I need them to be in a bag for hiking or travel. The insulation is fantastic (honestly too good, I have to leave tea to cool before putting the lid on or it’s a hazard) and they have been perfectly leakproof (provided you reassemble the caps properly after cleaning as I discovered!). I can’t fault them. - Rise: a 36oz, which has a straw on one side of the cap and a very nifty flip up lid for easy refilling. It isn’t an entirely sealed unit so is only spill-proof and it doesn’t insulate as well. However, I can fill it up with ice and water of an evening and it still has some ice left the next morning, which I think is more than adequate! I use this at home and in the car to increase my water consumption as I have ADHD and am terrible at remembering to drink enough. - Classic: my 8yo has an 18oz non-insulated with their new flip sports cap. This has been a *game changer*. It has a straw inside which makes drinking easier, but it flips shut to keep it clean. It has been entirely leakproof, even more than their previous caps. He used to forget to press the traditional sports cap closed properly and his school bag would be soggy. Honestly, I would probably get this one (but insulated) for myself if I needed another. - then we also have a couple of others. My first bottle was their classic stainless steel with the bamboo lid. My son uses it as a spare when he inevitably leaves his at school. And their old tumbler which I don’t use as it’s not spill-proof. He uses that for camping. One little tip though, if anyone decides to get one of the bigger TKWides and a variety of caps. When you buy the main bottle, go for the unit that comes with the twist cap. You can buy the twist cap alone but the straw is a shorter stainless steel one with an extender (silicone?) so it will fit all bottle sizes. I prefer the straw to be one piece of stainless steel for easier cleaning, and the only way you can buy this is to get it with the larger bottles. Then you can buy an additional café cap or one of their other styles. Obviously this means I can’t use my twist cap on the smaller bottle, but I wouldn’t do this anyway. I hope that makes sense!

Klean Kanteen! My 24(?) oz bottle fits in every cupholder ever. Even after dropping it and scraping it across tons of surfaces it is super intact. Stainless steel and insulated. The version I got has a twistable lid which makes a straw pop out. It is even spillproof if the lid is on and has been twisted closed properly. All the parts of the lid can be taken apart to really get it clean. Inside of the metal bottle part has no annoying ridges to try to clean under. Just a plain cylinder. Love my water bottle.

I love my Klean Kanteen, single walled steel with a replaceable cotton cover for insulation, my key decision to go for this one was that no plastic touches water ever, the lid is metal with an o ring, I haven't been able to find anything similar anywhere, their double walled is good too but I don't like the idea of adent ruining my bottle forever.

We’ve somehow ended up with many of them in our family - Hydroflask, Yeti, Kleen Kanteen, Owala, and the Stanley water bottle version. Honestly, they’re all pretty comparable, but I do like that I can refill the Owala without taking the lid off and it seems to hold ice the longest. That said, I’m still most attached to my 40oz Hydroflask, I’ve had it for 8 years and it’s held up great and easy lids to replace.

I'd rather pack two than deal with drinking out of one giant bottle. * Paperkrane shoes - I'm a big fan of their leather Chelsea boots for everyday wear. I've cycled between three pairs of them for the past 4ish years, and they still look brand new when they're cleaned up. The color I wear most often will probably need to be resoled in 2027.

IMO you are asking too much out of one product. If you are keeping hot and cold in one insulated container they are always going to find equilibrium at luke warm. Maybe someone out there has a recommendation for you that is your all in one dream container. Id suggest you'll have better success with two containers like [klean kanteen food canisters](https://www.kleankanteen.com/collections/food-storage-containers/products/insulated-food-container-16oz) the cold one you stick in the fridge the night before to prechill and find an ice pack that fits in it over your berries. The hot one you would have to preheat with boiling water and put your rice and veg in piping hot to even hope to have at a safe food temperature all day. You will obviously have better luck with each if you can find a way to keep each in a more appropriate environment eg. the hot one in the hot car all day in summer and cold one in a conditioned space. and vice versa in winter.

I purchased two of the 27oz brushed stainless steel non-insulated bottles with sports caps and they've held up extremely well for almost two decades so far. The 32oz Nalgene bottle
Thin wall - not the double wall vacuum insulted shenanigans - steel without paint. I use a kleen kanteen. The sport cap makes a funny noise but is worth it. As long as the threads aren't dented then it's fine. Mines covered in dents and I only use it for climbing. Otherwise it's nalgenes and Ozark trail mugs at the office. The no paint is just because it can chip, especially climbing.

Hydro Flask requires you to ship the item back for warranty claims, and they dent easily. I would not recommend them. My Hydro Flask is under 2 years old, and looks much worse than the Klean Kanteen I've had for over 4 years. I much prefer Klean Kanteen. More difficult to dent, lids come apart for easy cleaning. I have one that's 10+ years and dented/scratched up all over, but the insulation is still perfect. The lid style has changed over the years, but a compatible one is still available for purchase in case I ever lose mine. Have not had to warranty an actual bottle with Klean Kanteen, but when I had an issue with a lid, they were very helpful and easy to deal with.

I can vouch for this. My Klean Kantern has been holding up really well (3 years+). Have a few stainless steel water bottle but I end up grabbing this since it’s very easy to clean (no nasty junk and molds on its crevices) and it retains heat for a long time. Haven’t tried filling it with cold drinks.

my only complaint with Klean Kanteen is the paint on their bottles will chip after a while - probably no way to avoid it unless you keep it in a cushioned sleeve. I'd get uncolored "brushed metal" finish if I were buying new. It doesn't taste metallic or shed particles, unless you put something pretty nasty into the bottle - stainless steel is the preferred material for cookware that gets a lot more abuse than cold water

One of our klean kanteens is 18 years old now, and been in continuous use most of that time. I'd say they are fine over the long run. With the metal lids there is, of course, a silicone gasket. So, there is in fact something that is not steel touching your water over a very very small surface area. You could replace the gasket with something else if you're a nutcase like me (I was trying to build a full backpacking kit with no plastic as a fun project). I used leather soaked in wax, but it's harder to screw tight enough to seal.

That's why I carry a non vacuum insulated 18oz Klean Kanteen personally. I use the growler lid which is all 18/10, extremely easy to clean, locks securely and can't fall off to be lost like normal lids. You say you taste the metal, but the entire thing is 18/10 stainless, the same as any pot/pan or utensil you eat off. There is no flavor, half the water you drink is piped through copper or copper fittings which has much more of a flavor than any stainless. Plastic has a nasty taste to me, not all, but most. Plastic is porous and can more readily hold bacteria and microbes, washing it with anything remotely abrasive (scrubby side of a sponge?) will make micro scratches that allow even more surface area for bacteria to hide in. A Klean Kanteen will last a lifetime just due to its simplicity and the fact it's made of metal, they have lifetime warranty but I can't see me ever needing to use mine.
