  What are the up-and-coming companies known for quality goods?

  Kuhl. Probably not totally up and coming but often unmentioned here. Superior quality material, construction and fit. Stupid naming conventions, almost so much that I didn’t try for a long time. Not every style for me but can’t beat their work and outdoor pants/shorts, shirts, jackets.

  Why is it so hard to find well-made clothes that aren't insanely priced?

  As I write this, I'm wearing my Wolverine boots (12 years old), Kuhl pants (11 years), Irish wool sweater (21 years), and Barbour jacket (41 years), and Omega watch (21 years). BIFL is real. It does come at the cost of choosing a style and sticking with it. Easier for a man, but doable regardless.

  My favorite travel pants, shoes & backpack after trying way too many

  Pretty well. They are similar to golf pants/shorts but don’t have that swooshing noise when you walk or the sheen that some have. They’re designed for travel and hiking, but I’ve worn them in business casual settings with no one batting an eye. The only cons for me are the that the pockets are a little shallow on the pants and the back pockets. One pocket has a zipper and the other has a button flap. I’d prefer both back pockets be the same. But there are minor gripes and have not kept me from wearing them regularly.

  ISO brands for my new favorite green jacket

  I like the Kuhl take on the M65, which you can find sold as a Kollusion in a few different weights (waxed, insulated, sherpa, etc) or as a Rekon in a very lightweight quick drying fabric that you can layer. Most types have a hood that stows in the collar. I don’t think they sell that style currently though, so you have to hunt eBay etc or smaller resellers with existing stock for them. That said, they’re regularly available. Here’s the Rekon (not in stock there but has pics of all the colors): https://www.overland.com/products/kuhl-rekon-canvas-jacket-38970 It does have a bit of a gorpcore vibe but less so than most other manufacturers in that space (Kuhl’s casual stuff doubles well as urban wear). Anything M65 is going to look a little urban/outdoorsy I think.

  Best winter jackets?

  My favorite jacket I have ever owned is the "Luke" from overland sheepskin company. Second favorite is a hooded Kuhl puffer jacket. Both are extremely warm and comfortable and stylish, both have held up very well over the years, over a decade for both of them.

  Opinions on Kuhl pants

  Free ryders have replaced all my jeans for daily wear. Although Kuhls lighter pants you really can't risk drying in the dryer, free ryders can be dried on low with no shrinkage. Def best pair of pants from them, at jean weight pants. Really hoping they do a free ryder drop in denim like light, medium and dark wash. Maybe a Grey n a black pair as well would be fantastic!

  I bought a Kuhl ‘The Law’ jacket in an outfitters in Kawartha in Ontario. As far as I know they are a US brand. Great Jacket. They seem to be fairly true to size … not much spare space in them.

  Long-lasting shirt and pants for wood cutting work

  For cheap clothing that holds up well, check out LAPG.com. I use a couple pairs of their BDU’s for outdoor work including light chainsaw work, and nothing has busted yet. They usually have closeout stuff for cheap. Otherwise I’ve had good luck with some of the 5.11 canvas pants, but they’re only really worth it on sale. Kühl makes some good stuff, but you have to get their heavier weight pants. Some of the lightweight stuff is great for hiking but I wouldn’t use it for work. My pair of Ryder canvas pants seem durable enough.

  Avoid Kuhl - Poor Quality and Customer Service

  I have alot of Kuhl stuff. No issues for years, alot of friends bought from them as well without issue. It's worth noting some of their stuff is meant to fade quickly. From office to camping/ hiking i haven't had significant issues. Spent a few thousand with them atleast. Just follow care instructions.

  I bought a pair of Kuhl rock climbing pants 10 years ago and they still to this day barely have any Pilling in them. At this point after trying tonnes of outdoor brands. Kuhl and Fjallraven are the only brands I buy.

  Look at Kühl. I’ve got a great coat from them, slim fitting, it is quilted synthetic fabric but not “puffy”. Fjalraven is a company that uses a lot of natural fibers.

  Avoid Kuhl - Poor Quality and Customer Service

  I love most Kuhl gear I’ve tried. The renegade rock pants for example are no go to pant. I’ve literally spilled Taco Bell on my khaki colored ones during a road trip, slapped some water on them, and the stains were hardly noticeable. Came out in the wash. I also climbed a mountain in Valdez Alaska, thick brush, then wore them to church the next day after a wash.  The free radikls however, stained like crazy and wore through in under a year. Normal desk sitting stuff.  So they have quality stuff, and some to seriously avoid.  I have found the one jacket to be ago to, it stains easily, but comes out easy with some dawn dish soap and water.  They strike a good balance as fashionable performance gear, rather than performance gear as fashion if that makes sense.  They aren’t the most technical, but they’re great for my weekend trips to the beach or when hiking up a mountain.  I do love their shirts, specifically the Klimatizer, Brazen Kuhldry, and Engineered shirt. The renegade button up is also exceptionally wrinkle resistant.  That said I have made returns to places like REI for certain models such as the Free Radikls I mentioned, or for sizing issues. Give Kuhl a try, but buy from somewhere like REI or Scheels

  Plain but quality mens clothing that isn't too showy

  Kuhl is my go to. A subtle dime sized logo on the shirt sleeve is all that’s typically on the nicer shirts. Others are just plain. Everything is great quality. I’ve slowly been switching most of my shorts and shirts over time as they aren’t cheap.

If you are not satisfied with their gear or it don’t perform to your satisfaction, return it for a repair, replacement or refund.   How are the mighty fallen

  I’ll forever be mad about Carhartt and honestly any workwear brand that becomes street wear. I needed good workwear and Carhartt usually has the most options for women, but it’s all junk. I bought Kuhl pants instead, so far they’ve kicked butt for work. It was worth the extra money, but styles are limited and some functionality is questionable.

  PSA: Fjallraven no longer do tailoring and repairs for the majority of Canada

  Kuhl or Filson dry tin pants. I’m absolute hell on pants and these have the steady eddies for me. Filson is at $180 now so I had a little sticker shock and wand walked out without. Now I’m patching and dying my old ones

  Kuhl Pants and shorts button and snap button issues

  I have several pairs but I think they fixed the button issue. I bougt 2 new pairs lately of the renegade shorts and the button is a loop fastener instead of a snap MUCH better.

  I love the fit and quality of my Kuhls but they need to get rid of the snap closure and switch to buttons on all of their pants. Mine are slightly oversized and the snap still comes open way too often without a belt.

  I got rid of pants I couldn't squat while wearing without feeling the crotch stretch. It's not talked about enough but mens pants need to fit and I'm not just talking about waist and length. I like kuhl "the law" and pants that have a "gusseted crutch" design.

  Sure but some jeans are less durable than others. Do you think all jeans are made to the same standards and specifications? Wearing Levi’s while at work I wore through the knees of multiple pair due to the nature of my work (steel mill). After switching to a different brand, Kuhl, I was able to get more mileage from my jeans.

  I was in the same boat. I bought Kuhl brand jeans/pants and I’ve had a lot of success with them. I ripped about 3 pair of Levi’s before I made the switch. I wear their Rydr pants very often with no thigh or crotch issues and I wear the Klassik jeans. So far no issue from either.

  I have been wearing these shorts for 35 years on and off, and I am still in love.

  I have some 100% cotton stuff from Kuhl. Excellent brand. Please check them out. The poly/cotton blend stuff I have is from 5.11. It’s about 20% poly, so it adds durability and low maintenance while remaining breathable, and they look like nice shirts. Not “tactical” as you’d imagine from the brand. Also good stuff - check them out.

  This seems like a very Patagonia type of blend. If you haven’t already try them, kuhl, prana, Royal Robbin, and other hiking type brands. Another obvious one that you didn’t list is Smart Wool.

  In addition to these recs, Kuhl makes a nice flannel lined pant. Two layers in one. Smartwool makes great base layers and can be found secondhand. Also recommend a scarf if you’re going to be outside to keep your neck from getting cold. Wool, cashmere.

  The Kuhl Renegade Rock Pant. I have three pairs, first pair I bought over 4 years ago and is still going strong. Used them on hikes, going out, and working in a Home Depot for a year. They are still my favorite pair of pants. Tons of sleek pockets too.
