La pavoni for $800. The ONLY BIFL espresso machine. It’s basically just a boiler and a lever with a couple o rings. You may occasionally need to replace the o rings ($10, 20min)

Generally look for machines made by Italian or German companies specialising in coffee equipment- Lelit, Rancilio, La Pavoni, ECM… My entry level Lelit is over 15 years old and still going strong.

I second the La Pavoni (specifically the Europiccola model). I've seen machines that were decades old and still working well, only requiring occasional replacement of gaskets and other inexpensive parts. There are lots of online resources that walk you through how to do most any such repairs yourself. They're dead simple so most any repair, even less common ones, can be done yourself. However, they are manual, lever machines, meaning they are not “push a button and get your espresso" set-ups. You'll need to learn how to pull a proper shot and steam milk correctly, but that’s true for any machine…just a bit more so with levers.

True BIFL Espresso Machine: my La Pavoni. Bought it used about five years ago. It's an early 1980s model. I found it for around EUR100 or something like that on eBay. It was lost in the mail and I was refunded. Then it arrived, I paid the seller. It is a tank. Seriously. All parts are replaceable. I replaced the gaskets and shower screen when it arrived (it actually did not have a shower screen). Replaced the lever sometime after that. If you want something cheaper? The ROK GC Presso is also BIFL. I *also* have it. Don't ask me why I need to lives to max out my espresso maker setup.

What home coffee essentials have held up and lasted you over time?
I had to have one because my kids got one and I was jealous. I’ve had it for two years and really love it. Also have an old LaPavoni espresso machine right next to it, which I use, and there is a difference between the two, but if I had to pick one it would be the Moccamaster because it makes more at a time and is a little more hands off. Like the LaPavoni, the design doesn’t change and thus replacement parts are easy to get.

What home coffee essentials have held up and lasted you over time?
La Pavoni Europiccola, if you’re looking for an espresso machine. (A manual, lever espresso machine specifically). They aren’t cheap but they WILL last a lifetime (or at least many decades). if you can score a deal on a new one, or a used one, and get it for about $500 I think that’s a great price. You'll need to replace some gaskets once or twice a year depending on how much you use it. But a gasket replacement set runs around 30 bucks or so and there are plenty of online instructions that will guide you through the process. Do some research before buying though…lever machines require a little more skill. It’s not a “push a button and get your espresso" set up. You will also need a good burr grinder to get the most out of your machine and those start around $500 or so. The burrs should last decades as well before you have to replace them. As a much cheaper alternative, you could get the Bialetti moka pot which others have recommended. It's not the same as actual espresso but makes good, strong coffee just the same. They'll last a very long time as well... you’ll just need to change the gaskets once in a while and, less often, the metal basket and screen. Be careful not to put the plastic handle over the heat or else you will end up with a very sad looking handle. Oh and be sure to get the actual Bialetti brand...the off-brands are just a sad imitation.
