  Don't cheap out on buying flannel pajamas. You want brushed flannel of a good weight cotton. Check Lands End or Garnet Hill because they both have excellent ones that last forever. Or at least about seven or eight years in my case.

  Look for 100% cotton flannel or heavyweight brushed cotton, not ‘cotton blend.’ The blends are always thin. I’ve had the best luck with LL Bean flannel pajama pants and lands end-actually warm.

  If you go to a used clothing store, you will probably start to see which baby and kids’ clothes last over time. From my observations, brands like Hanna Andersson, Tea, Boden/Mini-Boden, Joules, vintage Gap, Lands End—also some smaller boutique brands. Look for organic cotton. My trick in 2nd hand shopping is to look for “lots” of clothes on ebay in those brands, so you get a bunch of quality clothes in a bundle and save on shipping. Like search for 5t lot Boden and see what turns up. And make offers!

  For jeans/chinos, I’ve been a Lands End Iron Knee devotee for years. My kids blew through every other pair of jeans’ knees, especially Old Navy and Cat and Jack. I never purchased them full price, and LE is one you will still want to search up coupon codes for to find the best one. One kid is very thin, so they used to have slim sizes but I saw fewer offered in recent years. I was not as pleased with the leggings iron knee versions, though, and found the seams to rip and the color to fade. Comfort color tee shirts have also held up the best in shape and weight for us and I’ll often buy plain tees or something screen printed on them from Etsy (the printing is where durability can vary though). My children also have long torsos, so we jumped into XS adult/teen sizes and abandoned kids shirts a while ago.

  We get most of our child’s clothing from Target, specifically the All in Motion line. Believe it or not, they’re pretty hard wearing. He always outgrows them rather than them wearing out or starting to look ratty. We do get more expensive outerwear, we like the kids down jackets from Bean, and some Lands End jackets and Patagonia jackets have been very nice. We get him decent shoes, Merrells and Xeros. Typically we don’t spend a lot on clothing for him because he grows. I can’t praise the target clothes enough. We have a hyper 11 year old boy that’s always moving, always riding bikes, playing outside, nerf battles with neighborhood kids, getting dirty, all the things. Those clothes really hold up.

  Need a Winter Coat That's Good in Snow/Rain/Sleet in sub zero temperatures

  If you’re happy with the coat you have, perhaps a rain poncho overcoat combination would be a good suggestion. In New England, it will only get to that windchill a few times a year, so an entire jacket dedicated to that might be overkill. Beside that Patagonia or lands end both have jackets rated for that.

  honestly don't get too caught up in brand names - what matters is the construction and materials. look for overlocked seams (you'll see two lines of stitching), and stick with thicker cottons, flannels, or linen. those will outlast the trendy expensive brands. also super important - figure out what type she wants. warm and cozy flannel? silky smooth? that'll narrow things down a lot. and here's something to keep in mind - if she wants fuzzy pjs, they can be a pain with flannel sheets, so maybe throw in some silky sheets if that's the case. ralph lauren and lands end are solid mid-ground options that won't destroy your budget but will acc last. the fancy brands like eberjey are nice but tbh you can find the same quality for less if you know what to look for in the construction. here are [a few options](https://deo9gr5ha90bn.cloudfront.net/?q=GMKAO1529) to check out that might help narrow things down

  Your best bet is second hand from eBay/vintage. Even premium brands are very low quality when compared with clothing made before the year 2000. You can spend $300 on a new wool sweater that will pill in three wears, or $70 on a vintage wool sweater that will last you another few decades. Depending on the season and item, you’ll find different options. For winter I am currently looking at Aran knits, LL Bean, Lands End, and Ralph Lauren.

  What are the most durable shirts?

  Don’t see them mentioned but I wear the hell out of Lands End Super T, both short and long sleeve. I have 5 of each and usually wear as an under shirt in all but the hottest days when it can be my only shirt. Tend to pair with Pima cotton oxford or cotton flannel (usually Patagonia or bean) or merino wool button down, again depending on the temp. They wear well, have a great weight and nice collar, wash well and don’t shrink too much. 100% cotton. Reasonably priced, although they constantly get discounted and don’t buy them unless they are. I tried 100 wool t shirts but I am not a big t shirt only wearer (unless it’s hot). I am not a fan of the merino travel clothes only option (tried it), but I usually have a couple merino button downs in my bag for “nice shirts” since they don’t wrinkle much and can easily be made to look “dressy”. I found cotton packs well and easier to launder on long trips. For high summer, I go with the linen shirts, usually from brooks brothers. Pants too. Anyway, my $0.02 take for what it’s worth

  Need help looking for 2 types of coats; A down, and a wool

  I second this. I have a full length, waterproof, down filled lands end coat that I jokingly refer to as my walking sleeping bag. It has held up amazingly well and wasn’t even close to what I was willing to spend for it. Another plus is 3 internal pockets, 4 external pockets, and a lined removal hood. Definitely look at lands end.

  Is there anything you're convinced is "the cheaper the better"?

  I'd argue that shoes, the ones your kids wear everyday, need to be good quality (which doesn't translate into the most expensive or popular necessarily). Even though they may outgrow them quickly, a pair of quality sneakers are a must. Dress shoes and the like? Get the cheap stuff. I'd also say back packs and coats need to be able to take a beating and have longevity. Buying second hand is great for this. LL Bean or Lands End will last forever.

  Wool Overcoat Suggestions

  I got a lands end one yeara ago that is great. One feature to look for is the front pockets that have a zipper into the interior glove/scarf pockets. Very helpful for getting gloves, a scarf, etc without fully unbuttoning the front and letting all your heat out.

  The problem is most winter stuff won't go on sale til next spring.  Get a pea coat from military surplus.  Get a down parks from ll bean or lands end Puffer jackets are warm but your going to rip it and then it will be annoying.

  Bed sheets that last?

  We got some we love several years ago from Lands End. The title below is what they're called now, but when we got them the word "Supima" was in the place of the word Egyptian the new ones are called : *700 Thread Count Luxe Sateen Egyptian Cotton No Iron Bed Sheet Set* I did what the first thing everyone says to do was get the highest quality 100% cotton "percale" sheets, but those were were scratchy as hell to me and it was impossible to enjoy the "crisp" type when all I could feel was roughness. It is even described like "a freshly STARCHED button-down shirt," which I have and don't want that texture & weave in my sheets The Lands End mentioned above are 100% but not percale weave and totally smooth (whether Supima or Egyptian). A good way to see a differences chart to compare and see what would be different between the old, new, and percale is to google search: *compare differences between 3 types of sheets: supima cotton vs egyptian cotton vs percale cotton in the same thread counts* and then click "AI mode" button above that

  This isn't a full list by any means (what I'm about to list I mean, not talking about yours), but here are some things we've had good luck with that I didn't see on yours: vintage stainless flatware (there's a good bit out there and they last pretty much forever aside from when a piece accidentally gets tore up in the kitchen sink disposal) oxo kitchen gadgets (I'm a particular fan of the stainless steel ice cream scoop, but we also use the smooth edge can opener, and bottle brushes) crocs (I know they're not necessarily BIFL but they do last a surprisingly long time, particularly if you just need them for normal around the house and outside errands) corelle cast iron lands end tote bags

  Lands' End Stadium Squall Parka. It's knee-length, it has a hood, there are velcro straps to tighten up your cuffs and collar, a velcro placket over the zipper.  My only complaint is the pockets are too high up on my torso.  I've had mine for decades.  It's had 3 years of serious heavy winter use and then light use since, and it's in perfect condition.

  Where do you buy hotel-quality bed sheets and pillows without spending a fortune? I want my bed to feel like a Marriott stay.

  In general, when I shop for sheets, I look for a high thread count (400+). Don’t buy microfiber or anything else that doesn’t have a thread count (no shade on bamboo or microfiber if that’s what you’re looking for, but OP is looking for high quality sheets.) Look for a fitted bottom that has deep pockets. Those are just some guidelines. I bought a really nice set of sheets for a friend of mine who likes fancy stuff from LL Bean or Lands End (I can’t remember.) And if you’re like me and want to feel it first, you can go to a fancy department store like Macy’s and feel the sheets and see if they match what you’re looking for.

  BIFL HS Grad gift for my daughter

  Luggage, Mason Pearson hairbrush, a nice set of Lands End towels, a Pendleton blanket. Stock her up on home goods that are genuinely nice! Dorm life is crusty sometimes, so having belongings that weren’t found in a Target budget bin and aren’t made of polyester becomes such a luxury.

  I adore the Lands End cotton Oxford sheets. They have weight and thickness almost like linen but also are breathable due to the low thread count. Soft but still have texture. Downside is they only come striped and the colors are limited. They’re not as heavy as the Redland Cotton sheets but they’re close.

  I second Lands End. Nothing makes me feel more old lady than buying from Lands End, but it seems almost impossible to find functional swimsuits in plus sizes. They are also sold through a few other retailers like Kohls and I think Target, so if you want to be able to return in person, you can buy it online there instead. Lands End also has frequent sales. I would wait until at least a 40% off sale. There might be a sale on now for Easter. They are decent quality. I don't swim in much chlorine, but ocean and fresh water and they last several years.

  I have both. Both are extremely sturdy in my opinion. What I like about the LandsEnd options are the inner and outer pockets (the LLbean version does not have pockets). I also liked their options for longer handles- which I wanted but didn’t get due to my preferred color/size being out of stock. I do think LLBean has better monogram options & placement. Can’t go wrong tho.

  BIFL, but also BISecondhand. What are some things that everyone should keep an eye out for, but can commonly be found for cheap when preowned.

  I’ve been very lucky the past two years with coming across some good men’s clothes, especially at one new store. L L Bean, Eddie Bauer, Woolrich, Pendleton, Lands End, etc. I’ve even found some Reyn Spooner Hawaiian shirts that go for $70 new. I think the most I’ve paid was a jacket for $15. I’ve even found some good stuff at Goodwill but it’s few and far between. Ya just gotta look.

  I've got two fleece robes from land's end, a few years apart. The material on the older one is almost twice as thick. Jeans feel nothing like they used to. It really is disappointing.

  I really like the Lands End totes (medium size with long handles) over the LL Bean, because they have 4 interior pockets and one exterior pocket. Both are monogram-able and come in many colors.

  Warmest, most durable parka?

  Several members of my family have loved this parka from Lands End—extremely warm, comes in petite sizing and nice colors, reasonably priced. It has lasted them well over a decade at this point.

  Lands End Womens Coat Sizing?

  A small would fit great I think! I specifically needed something I could put chunky layers under so the space is good for me but probably unnecessary for most people. Haven't really tried it out in cold temps but it is super heavy so I am thinking that translates to it being warm.

  What quarter zip sweaters should I buy for everyday use?

  If you want inexpesive tops for wear around the house, Lands end women’s quarter zip fleece tops are great. often on sale for $15-20 dollars. They aren’t so warm like some of the more expensive ones I have Patagonia , Cotopaxi etc. The wash well, no shrinking and I don’t care if they get dirty when cooking or cleaning. I have 6 of them and wear them all the time .

  I have a couple flannels and they’re my least favorite. They’ve started pilling inside a year. Lands end are 10x better in that arena.

  Young professional purchases

  Focus on what suits *your* needs, rather than on the idea of what a young professional needs. Like, people could declare a certain coffee maker a kitchen essential, but if you don't drink coffee, there's no point in getting it. For the less fashion sensitive articles of clothing, LLBean has fantastic quality, and Lands End is also pretty good. If you lose your water bottle, BIFL status is less important than usability, although if you like the mouth of Nalgene, then obviously keep using it. I favor Contigo and Camelback because they encourage me to drink more water than I would with a Nalgene, even though they are inherently less durable. I have an STM backpack with a well padded laptop compartment that I love. It's held up better than any other backpack I've had. It's also quite comfortable. Watches usually last pretty well. The weak points are thin plating and canvas or leather straps (which are also more comfortable, imo, so I put up with them). I'd make sure to get something I won't be sick of in 10 years, because unless you get a really crummy one, you'll probably still have it. That might be one of the more important BIFL aspects with watches, really. Briefcase: Depends on your job. You want it to fit the environment. You might be interested in a fountain pen. It won't save you money, but it will mean you'll have the one nice pen instead of a bunch of cheaper ones. For a discrete pen, I like the Hero 616, which is modeled after the Parker 51. The standard pen recommendation is the Lamy Safari. I always use Noodlers Black ink, because it's impossible to remove from paper, which makes it great for signatures, but some people prefer washable ink to avoid clothing mishaps.
