Help Rehab my New Favorite Seat
For the chair in my pictures, I wet sanded the entire thing with 91% IPA and 320 to 1000 grit sandpaper to smooth down the cracks in the paint. This is important. After sanding, I went over the thin spots of leather, such as the front edge of the seat where most of the patina was, with a fiberglass-reinforced air dry leather filler. I applied an extremely thin layer to reinforce the old leather. At this age of leather, the paint is indeed structural, and I wanted to backfill the removal of paint with something structural. Yeah, this is exactly the type of science and engineering-based product you won't find with Leatherique. They're stuck selling 19th century products while leather professionals are in 2025 with fiberglass in their leather repair fillers. For your purposes, I would probably suggest a cream filler, as it dries somewhat softer than a fiberglass filler. I just wanted maximum structural reinforcement, a repair that would last another 10 years, so I went fiberglass. After that, I primed the leather with a water based carbodiimide cross linked primer. Then I painted it with carbo cross linked paint, and sealed the repair with carbo cross linked clear coat. Good for another 10 years. If you want, I can link to the products I used. It's really not that difficult to do a good job.

Just bought this beautiful mahogany writing desk for cheap! But the leather is stained or maybe the colour rubbed off. Does anyone know of any way to fix this?
Leatherique. Look it up. It works opposite of most leather cleaners and conditioners. You actually apply conditioner oil first that lifts all the dirt and oils up to the surface and out of the leather, you let that sit for 24 hours or so and then you can hit it with the cleaner component, Prestine Clean, and a horse hair leather brush. Chemical Guys makes an affordable brush.
