  Need BIFL Recommendations as a Graduation Present!

  Are you me? I love this. As 28F Ph.D. Student I would second the recommendation for cast iron, leatherman multitool (bc of your hobbies), and anything coffee related. I get the idea of the filson but they don’t look formal for very long. They patina which is super cool. But if you’re wearing a teaching or conference outfit with your “patina” briefcase it might not be the look you’re hoping for. Another nice bag could be a BIFL splurge though!

  A good pair of stainless steel general purpose scissors can last a lifetime.

  Tailor scissors are meant for fabric. So while they’re awesome, if you use them as general purpose scissors, they become too blunt/jaded for clean fabric cuts: they will break the thread apart instead of slicing it. I’d recommend leatherman for a general purpose, BIFL scissors. They’re expensive, but they will last and you will love them.

  My big 3 are a good multi tool or knife (solid steel like magnacut, s35vn, nitro v etc and leatherman wose arc or alpha is a good start though out of the 100 dollar budget) a good flash light, and a really high quality titanium pen. The pen would be my number one as you will never loose a pen you spend more than 3 dollars on and it will save you so much money in the long run and will likely out last you. I have 5 pens all around 60 bux that i guard with my life and have had for over a decade.

  Any Fiskars tools (axes, shears, scissors) - they have a lifetime warranty and they perform exceptionally well at an excellent price. Estwing is a good American made alternative. Leatherman multi-tools that have 25 year warranty and can last a lifetime when maintained. Victorinox is a good alternative. 2 Oz of Silver. Because it’s cool.

  I carry for work and when I'm out on my motorcycle the ARC in my coveralls happily. I have it in my pocket in ZapWizards holster with bunch of fiddly bits, a sucrets tin with other bits in my cycle bag. never broken down on the side of the road. I like old motorcycles. I have my older Leatherman's in the glove box, fishing tackle, lodge but no one touches my damn arc.

  I have the Leatherman ARC (had all their other ones) and it's by far the best EDC I've ever had--can't think of more than two days in a row I haven't used it. Yeah I repair things, fix things. BUT for my most utility it's my Victorinox Tinker Swiss Army Knife--had it since I was 10 or so--not a tool on it I don't use Awl, Philips, screw driver, can opener , little knife, big knife---don't need the scissors---that sits on my key chain.

  Picking a “best” hundred‑buck item is tough because most things in that range die from cheap materials, not how you use them. Longevity usually comes down to the material, not whatever name is stamped on the side. For anything metal, look for stainless steels like 420HC up to S30V, not some mystery alloy with a shiny finish. For tools, a one piece forged steel body lasts decades longer than cast or welded parts. For fabrics, 1000D nylon or heavy waxed canvas in the 18 to 22 ounce range holds up long after the lighter stuff blows out. For electronics, anything with a user replaceable 18650 battery will outlive the sealed battery junk. If you want concrete picks, the Leatherman Rebar is usually the safest bet in that price range. Same story with an Olight S2R Baton II if you want a light you can keep running for years. A basic carbon steel chef knife like the Victorinox Fibrox 8 inch also punches way above its price and lasts as long as you bother to sharpen it. Biggest trap is anything held together with glue, sealed batteries, or fancy coatings. Those are just early failure points pretending to be features.

  My 2025 BIFL products this year, how about you?

  Leatherman replaced 2 multi tools for me this year for free. My Smartwool socks just turned 10 years old and still going. Got my Frye boots resoled - like new. Grip6 belt still looks new. I also learned how to darn holes in clothing, more of a BIFL skill than product.

  What signs do you look for to tell if something will actually last years?

  Alright hear me out. This isn’t perfect, but brands that only make one thing, or are primarily known for one thing, is a good indicator if not necessarily BIFL then at least usually pretty good quality. Cases in point: - Red Wing Shoes (at least the heritage line) - Leatherman (pocket tool) - Le Creuset (only cast iron, their original product) - Darn Tough (socks) - Peugeot (only their grinders) - Zassenhaus (grinders) - Moccamaster (coffee makers) All quality brands start out by doing one thing and doing that one thing very very well. The well run brands stick to this promise and avoid the enshittification that happens when branching into product lines that they don’t really understand to make a quick buck. That’s why one shouldn’t buy anything other than cast iron from Le Creuset or grinders from Peugeot, everything else they make is average at best, making more money because some management consultant has recommended that they grow their brand value through diffusion products.

  I have to spend $150 at amazon this week

  \- **Bag:** Timbuk2 Classic Messenger bag. I've had mine for 6 years used as a full-time commute/computer bag, occasional range bag, then as a diaper bag for a few years, then as my fishing bag most recently. The only issue I've had is a broken buckle but that was my fault closing it in a car door. **- Multi-tool:** Leatherman multi-tools: My dad had the same one 20+ years before he died. I've been using a Free p4 model for 4ish years with no issues through a lot of both hard use and daily use type tasks, and very little care (re-tightened screws twice and apply a little oil occasionally). **- Knife:** Essee Izula 2, affordable, great lifetime warranty, small enough to EDC and for delicate tasks, tough enough to baton wood, the blade shape and size make it very versatile. Does require basic care (dry and oil) and you may not like the sheath that comes with it. **- Wool blend Socks:** My smart wools have lasted me like 5 years, my wigwams are my most comfortable, my darn toughs are also great. **- Good underwear:** My ExOfficios have lasted seemingly forever. I've been married 9 years today and I'm pretty sure a few of the sadder pairs in my dresser are almost that old. Saxx are incredibly comfy but don't last. **- Light Jacket:** I've had a Patagonia Jacket since 2009 that is one of my more used jackets, patagonia repaired the main zipper two years ago for free/cheap. Jack Wolfskin wind shirt/jacket, also had since 2009 and it's been pretty brutally treated through Military stuff, backpacking, a short stint doing heavy pipefitting, and a lot of hunting/fishing. I've literally just partially retired it in the last few weeks for a Helikon-Tex Woodsman Anorak, I'll still keep the wolfskin for a farm work layer until it completely dies. **- Wallet:** I've had a Rogue Industries front pocket wallet as my only wallet since 2015, the only reason I need to replace it after 10 years is because I got the nylon one instead of the leather, pretty sure the leather would last at least 15-20 years. **- Water bottles/thermos:** Classic Nalgene bottles are very rugged and last forever. Classic Stanley thermos, it will take a house fire to kill it. My insulated Kleen Kanteen has also taken tremendous abuse and clumsiness.

  What’s a purchase that’s not fun, not flashy but now you swear by it?

  A few things that really come to mind with no particular order or genre: - Tires and windshield wipers are two consumables that really are worth what you pay for them. - Quality hand tools will always make life easier. (Fluke testers for everything and Leathermans get honorable mentions here.) - Good appliances that you don’t have to worry about will give you peace of mind. Invest in your fridge if you have to pick just one. - Vornado fans are a favorite. - Single-function drip coffee with a gold tone coffee filter. - Running ethernet through your house to every room saves headache, and will always outlive whatever wireless/mesh system you’re currently using. - Wrought-iron outdoor furniture. - Anything that involves entry/exit to your house. Screen door mechanisms, handles/knobs/locks, garage door openers and remotes, gates. - A set of jumper cables, ratchet straps, and an *organized* toolkit for the car. - Hardware hardware hardware. Keep track/stock of nails/screws/turnbuckles/toggle-bolts/etc., and always restock when you notice you’re low. It’s hard to source carpentry materials at 2 AM. Make sure you have it for indoor and outdoor ratings. A small stack of tarps is a must in this category, too. - Grocery-getter shoes. Something you can throw on in an instant, but can take you through a full day. I lean towards Birkenstocks. - Osprey bags/luggage. The guarantee is worth its weight in gold.

  Flying can be a challenge. The TSA basically says "listen you can fly with it but if some random agent says you can't you have to give it up anyway; it's a fucking knife." And if I'm not flying with it, then I have to decide if I'm a pocket person or an every day bag person. If I'm a pocket person, pocket knife. If I'm a bag person, Leatherman Wave. If it's a gift, a fun color one, maybe from the used market if it's not damaged.

  Which moment made you switch to the "buy it for life" mindset?

  Being older (me), it's a bit strange that younger folks have to actually learn what is BIFL --we used to look at things when emerging plastics started showing up, synthetic materials and gauge the quality by touching or eyeballing, weight of the thing. When electronics emerged it was more about seeing the price, knowing something about engineering, the UI part was it solid. I commend you that you seem to have turned that awareness on , full on. There's no doubt BIFL could be done in the kitchen, the workshop or toolbox, outdoor gear, musical instruments------in the end--this sub, a few off reddit places have pretty much beat the horse to death--the items that are BIFL. There are some household appliances --blenders, mixers, which vacuum (generally not the most popular thing), power supplies for music--that are in the BIFL realm but the sub rarely reveals some new thing that hasn't been covered. Do get yourself a usable sized cast iron fry pan (old ones from yard sales and such are good). Leatherman products are worth a purchase etc..

  I had an original Leatherman that was gifted to me that I loved and got so much use out of (including blood blisters) over the years. I forgot I had it in my life jacket when I flipped my kayak on a saltwater fishing trip. After several days and getting home to unpack all the gear it had rusted to shit and I set it aside. Came across it again after a couple years and despite being well past the 25 year warranty (not that this should have been covered due to extreme neglect) I sent it in anyway not really expecting much. I even felt guilty doing so. To my surprise, a short while later, I received a replacement (different model as it was no longer made) including sheath. Ended up gifting that and bought a Wave and Surge right away as a result. Personally I feel the Victorinox are far more refined and polished but Leatherman earned a customer for life.

  The Leatherman Wave and Charge are the absolute gods of multitools, imo. Have carried one (not always the same one) for about 20 years as a farm laborer, then a construction worker, than a heavy equipment mechanic. Gerber is probably a solid tool too, but to me the design is clunky and unwieldy and not even a true competitor to Leatherman

  Based on what you said, I'd suggest either the Leatherman Skeletool or the Leatherman Signal. The Skeletool is a slimmed down version, that is effectively just a knife, screwdriver, bottle opener and pliers - and it's about the same size as a normal pocket knife. The Signal is more robust and marketed towards outdoor activities like camping, and has a larger tool set and also weighs more and is bigger (and it has a fire starter, and whistle and sharpener built in, which is cool, even if somewhat gimmicky). I would decide based on whether he carries a knife daily already and how attached he is to said knife. If he has a pocket knife he already really likes, then I'd get the Signal as a complement to the pocket knife that he can take on trips it has on hand around the house, but he prob won't necessarily carry it every day. If he doesn't already regularly carry a knife (or if the knife he already has is low quality or non-sentimental) then I'd go with the Skeletool, as that has more potential to actually get used more often, as it is small and light on that it's not a burden to carry daily. Any of the other Leatherman models would be just fine as well (the "Arc" is top of the line if you wanna go all out). I've never had a SOG mulitool, but their knives are legit. As for Gerber, I'm personally not a huge fan, as that brand has put out some garbage products in the past. The multitools are prob fine tho, but I'd choose Leatherman over Gerber all day, personally.

  You could not go wrong with a Leatherman Arc or Free P4. Outside of those specific models, I'm of the opinion that there are better options not made by Leatherman. The SOG PowerAccess for full-size and the PowerPint for a smaller more compact size are probably my favorite no brainer options. I'm also a fan of the Roxon multi tool because you can customize it to hold whatever implements you want, though that's a bit newer so the "buy it for life" aspect could be up in the air. It may be difficult for you to figure out exactly what implements your husband would want so it may be difficult not spoiling the surprise. It is also a cheaper option so there is more wiggle room with just buying more than he could need to let him experiment, or even change the implements depending on if he's camping or at home.

  Leatherman multi tool I ought in 2001. Everything it still 100%, nothing is broken. Minimal wear and scratches from use. It goes camping, hunting, hiking with me. I do electrical work on aircraft and have used it countless times to fix small things I didn’t feel like going back to the tool box for. I just wish they still made them like that.

  I will chime in on this. I have a 20 year old leatherman and it is sitting on the desk next to me. It has been through a lot. I've also used Gerbers and SOGs, but I tend to lose them more than break them. For his 10th birthday, I bought my son an EDC kit, and went with Gerber. But those three brands last forever.

  This is true, but... Speaking for myself I am frequently somewhere not near a toolbox, or I don't have my toolbag with me, and I need pliers or a philips driver. Do I want to use the multi-tool all day for a project? Heck no. But I also don't want to have to walk back to my garage to get the tool, which will take me 3x longer than if I can pull out the multi-tool and just fix it on the spot. I like the Leatherman Wingman. It's small enough that it just clips to my pocket all day. It also doubles as the pocketknife. Having a toolbag of all of the essential tools is also important. For me that's * impact driver and bits, socket drives and a few common sockets * screwdrivers * measuring tape * lineman pliers * utility shears * sharpie * sometimes torpedo level and speed square * small container of construction screws The rest of the tools are in a toolchest or in a project-specific toolbag (i.e. plumbing, electrical, etc.)

  Based on the activities you described, I think your husband would appreciate the Leatherman Surge. The blades (likely the tools that will get the most use while camping and bow-hunting) are easily accessible without opening the tool, and the Surge is well-equipped but compact at the same time. I’m not sure how often he would use a multi-tool for home projects - I personally prefer to use ‘real’ tools when possible but I still appreciate my Leatherman and Victorinox multi-tools for their versatility.

  Most of the Leathermans will be a great buy, the hardest part is which one, and how big. I personally went through the Leatherman phase, the Gerber phase and landed on SOG tools. Mine was a larger heavy on that I wore daily on my job as a video tech, the best part was that I could open the knife blade one handed and without fully opening the pliers to get to it. Also compare warranties, and availability of parts. I don’t’t know about the others, but SOG sells parts right on their site, and they are easily repaired and tools swapped out. I dropped mine into a leaf pile that was later burned, and i found it while it was still too hot to pickup. The internal spacer was plastic, and had melted, but the whole thing still functioned. I sent it in for the rebuild/repair service, and they determined that the “heat treatment” that it received in the burn pile compromised the metal enough that they determined it was no longer fit for use so sent me a new one.

  In recent years--the Leatherman ARC. Can't get enough of that multitool (and the case I got for it--case that holds additional tools. The amount of things I'm able to do quite effectively with this case and tool amazes me. My Swiss Army Knife (Victorinox)--Tinker model without scissors. Had that for decades. Always with me, daily. Always makes me smile--can't tell you how many times the tweezers on that, the awl, the Philips have just been grabbed, done their thing and done. My Mac Knife (Chef's knife)--always makes me happy. Others have their favorite Chef's knife--totally get folks love of particular brands. No debates on sharpening. I can sharpen well but when you've held something for 30 years almost daily--wow. My mini tripod (going on 50 years)--very different build than the ones you get today but this little thing is solid, has made many great photos---still going. My large 100 year old cast iron pan. Daily use---smile at it every day. My Danner Logger Boots of 40 years. Sure I've resoled them but same boots, same great fit-yes I do a couple bouts of shoe shine/leather treatment. My Triumph Bonneville (now on 24 years)-it has carbs, it's serviceable. I had an older one I sold (from 1969) that the new owner still has but I wanted that electric start---vehicles can be buy it for life if you know a bit of maintenance.

  I own a few different Leatherman and Victorinox, but not the Spirit. I've honestly never heard anyone say the Spirit is the best money can buy like the other poster... But I love my knives and tools from both companies. Leatherman has a great warranty, but I think Victorinox has slightly better quality control out of the factory. Both are fine choices.

  Leatherman Skeletool. I have the CX and have had it for 12 years. I broke my first one a few months after getting it and noted that they seemed to have a very thin hinge. Turns out there were updating them for that very reason and I was sent the new one and it has been great ever since. It has only essentials, so is quite a bit thinner than a Wave or Signal. I believe Leatherman will also do custom engraving on them for you as well.

  Weatherman wave, or a mult blade SAK. The Wave has world class pliers, and fantastic blades, but the scissors are shit and it doesn’t have tweezers ( you can add a pair of SAL tweezers. The SAL has clinical quality steel and fabulous scissors, and tweezers. Personally I go for the Wave above the SAK. I got the bigger pouch and got the extended set of sockets. Add some duct tape and 10 zip ties and you can put me anywhere on the planet and I’d give it a go. In my work back I carry the Swiss card, but I’ve had at least 3 taken off me by border security on my travels.

  $2K Amazon Budget—Help Me Turn Digital Money Into Sawdust

  A measuring tape, stud finder, ladder, eye protection (some that seal like goggles, and some that don't), ear protection, dearskin gloves, and a respirator with extra filters should be your first stop. It's easy to forget safety gear until you need it, and these items are only to be bought by well known brands. A cheap measuring tape is a bad idea as they're not all accurate. A quality multi-tool (Leatherman Free P4 is my top choice) can make a lot of repairs possible before you get other tools and is great to have around. Electric tools: pick one reputable brand (DeWalt, Milwaukee, Makita, Ryobi, etc.) and buy a drill, a sawzall, and an impact driver from the same product line. This keeps the batteries interchangeable, and beware of fake batteries. You'll need drill bits, impact compatible sockets, and various saw blades as well. Will you have a yard to take care of? If so, a Corona hand saw, hori hori, pruners, loppers, a mower, weed-eater, and blower could all be considered. For hand tools, buy cheap first, then replace with quality later if it ever does break. You'll want drivers (Philips, flat, and hex at minimum), a hammer, a level, various screws and nails (consider getting a wall hanging hardware set). A socket set is recommended as well. Get painters tape, duct/gorilla tape, and packing tape, super glue (for static repairs), shoe glue (for repairs requiring flex), and clamps of various sizes. Rope is useful as well.

  I prefer the Leatherman Wingman for the following reasons: Smaller than the Leatherman Wave; one hand thumb open on the knife; scissors are one hand accessible on the outside; pliers are spring loaded. The individual blades can be purchased on Ebay of you break one. I have also tried the Harbor Freight Gordon (Wave copy). It was good for the money, but too big and heavy for everyday carry. Also the scissors were on the inside, meaning you had to use two hands to open the tool, then fold out the scissors. I will caveat that I broke the pliers on each of these dehooking saltwater fish. I guess if one squeezes really hard on a steel hook shank, the pliers can break off. For me, these tools are all about the knife, scissors, and pliers. The rest of the tool hardly ever gets used (except to open bottles using the edge of the tool wedged on the top of your hand).

  I carry a Leatherman Charge+ but there are some minor irritations with it. Main one is the pliers as there's not enough space between the handles for me to comfortably use them. If you pick up a used one, make sure that the wire cutters have the replaceable cutters. Luckily I don't use the pliers as often as the other tools. I use the eyeglass screwdriver, bit driver, scissors and knife most often. It is an older design and the patent has run out so there are lots of clones which are arguably better in some respects. I also have the Leatherman ARC. It fixes the pliers issue. The tools are also more easily accessible. Only downside is that I prefer the scissors on the Charge+ which, though smaller, seems to cut fabric better.

  Generally, anytime you come across something that’s too loose, to tight, stuck where it shouldn’t be, closed in a container, taped shut, the wrong size, needing adjustment, or delicious but bigger than bite sized. That’s when I grab my knife. Suburb dweller here, and yesterday’s knife use opportunities included Amazon packages, a child’s swim cap, and another child’s fishing line. I do think the torch (aka flashlight) is similarly important and a multi tool like a leatherman would likely be a better tool for a lot of situations, but a small, lightweight, slim, strong and sharp knife is sort of the modern caveman’s rock. It will do so many tasks “good enough”.

  I used my Leatherman tweezers to remove a tiny splinter from my pinky finger yesterday. I have a Leatherman with scissors, pocket knife, tweezers, screw driver, and bottle opener. I used it twice yesterday. The splinter, and to cut a lemon.

  I have lived and traveled in many cities, and I keep a small folding knife in my back pack, and use it all the time. Opening letters, cutting packaging, trimming string, pouring things open, there's a ton of little tasks you do that are really kinda irritating and not easy without a tool. I started carrying one because I traveled to a ton of places with unsafe tap water. To avoid coffee but maintain my caffeine intake I started carrying these little packets of caffeinated crystal light, and they were ANNOYING to open because it was hard to peel them and if you pulled to hard it would rip and send powder everywhere. One time it stained the crud out of my last clean shirt, so I got a mini Leatherman just for the scissors just to open these packets but I use it pretty often.

  I don't think you need to have utility in mind if you don't already have an idea of what your lifestyle will be like, because there is a good chance you may rarely/never use the thing and that would be a waste. Would a good Leatherman or a strong hammer be a good gift? Maybe, if you'll use it a lot. But if you're a city kid who will only ever need to fix small things once a year and you'll usually get someone to do it for you all the other times, then that thing will just gather dust for most of your life. My view is unless you're already set for a specific career path where you know for sure you'll make good use of the item, a safer and better choice of a 21st gift would be something sentimental and not necessarily useful like a watch, a piece of jewelry, or some sort of clothing.

  As an engineering student, perhaps a quality, reliable computer, if you don't have one. It's definitely not buy it for life. But, if you don't graduate into a job, nerds like us can use a computer for income to keep you afloat. We're probably not talking about a car-level purchase, but if we are, a reliable car is housing with minimal rent cost.  With a mid-level set of hand tools you can fix most things in every day life. Or a Leatherman (or Gerber or other quality multi-tool) will handle the large majority of minor things.  A wide-bottoom, oven safe, tri-ply stainless steel saucepan. You can cook everything from steak to pizza to pasta. some will say cast iron. That stuff is heavy and a hassle to clean. Steel is dishwasher safe and will easily last your lifetime if you don't abuse it. A job... Seriously. Can they get you a job? As someone who graduated stem summa cum laude, and then couldn't find work, and going myself living in my car- a job is what you actually need at this point.

  Pocket knife's and multi-tool got a leatherman myself Good screw driver sets... like a ratchet one but very high quality made mostly of metal of something and a smaller one idk it style but metal !! Use it so much... in the house, on cars, outside the house, friends, neighbors... A quality keyboard for computer ( most mecnaical even magnetic can last you A LOOOONG TIME... replace switched and such A watch solar or mechanical ! A solid metal pen ! Some are actually very cheap...

  Buying my first knife, need recommendations

  Victorinox is a great brand in a sea of mediocre options for a budget knife. When I say budget knife, I don't mean a bad tool. It's a very neutral first knife, and it will serve most purposes very well. As you use it, you'll find out what you need most - maybe a more dramatic point, longer blade, harder steel, whatever. At that point, you'll find more directional recommendations. A Victorinox pocket knife is not going to clear brush, but you'll find out soon if you actually find yourself wishing you could clear brush with a knife. You'll learn if you want a blade that can withstand leverage to use as a bigger tool; you'll learn if you want something that looks dangerous; in short, you'll learn what you need *after* you can use the tool and identify its uses for you specifically. Same process as buying any other tool, for me. If you want reliable stuff at a reasonable rate, go for Buck, Victorinox, Leatherman, or maybe CRKT. Not sure what's available internationally as I'm in the US.

  What is a BIFL item/product you recommend?

  I have the briggs and Riley Baseline carryon, medium roller (getting the Large/XL means you will be over the 50lb domestic (US) weight limit), and a cabin 2-wheel underseat roller. Great bags, although the wife wanted Away (seem nice so far, but not my preference). Tom Bihn backpacks. Took a week long trip to the tropics and the bag is a little unorthodox but it can hold a lot of stuff. And you have a variety of fabrics to select. Bose over hear headphones - great for travel and mine have lasted for awhile. For life is somewhat limited but its an electronic item that has a little tech, its a tradeoff. Sonicare toothbrush - It is like 10 years old on the original battery. Teeth are life. Agree with the Leatherman Wave+, good tool doesn't really excel at any one thing, but useful to have. Cookware: DeBuyer carbon steel country fry pan. I prefer this over cast iron. Demeyere Atlantis Fry pan - great steel fry pan. Allclad copper core (functionally similar to the d3 but I like the appearance of the copper line that shows through and I don't worry about cleaning it). I have watches. Mechanical ones are nice but as the old joke goes if you have to pick a watch to wear for the rest of your life what would you choose and no you can't choose your g-shock. NiMH batteries - where possible get rid of alkaline even if they are cheaper. They will leak and ruin your day and maybe even the device they are in. I choose Eneloops, the normal not the pro variant. Skip the LION batteries for now as they are 3.7v and require a voltage regulator to go to 1.5v, but if you need the 1.5v instead of 1.2v for the device meaning the NiMH won't work then the normal 1.6v lithium batteries would work. High quality LED lights - CRI should be 90+. They are a long term consumable but higher quality light is better. Knipex and Klein for tools. Knipex makes my favorite generalist pliers/wrenches. Klien makes great hand tools, I prefer the MiUSA options and use their linesmans for random things. Klien also makes a bottle opener, Wera does too and they are somewhat comfortable to hold. Clothes that don't have spandex. Spandex and elastic fail. I have had Patagonia fleece for 30 years and it still works. Randolph sunglasses - I just like them. Ray Ban 4140, they have spring hinges which means I can wear my spouse's and they have had theirs for 15 years although I had to buy new aftermarket lenses. Also discovered a french brand Cartel that also uses spring hinges, but don't know enough about this brand. Miele Washer and Dryer - gets rid of the vent ducting behind and they are solid if a little quirky. They canister vacuum is great. Converted the in-laws to this brand and they just went from the upright to the canister.

  Recently got married myself. Some thoughts: Kitchen Stuff: - Le Creuset Dutch oven, frying pan, and anything else, really - Staub Dutch oven, honestly might be longer lasting than the Le Creuset. I own both and the Staub is much heavier duty. - Wüsthof chef knives, go for the Ikon Classic line, best feel and bang for buck. - Schott Zwiesel wine glasses, omfg buy these yourself if you must, the “Pure” collection is basically indestructible, have had multiple of them fall off of counters/coffee tables and miraculously not break. Also their DOF and other bar glasses are great. - Mannkitchen Pepper Cannon, my most-used kitchen tool, indestructible and absolutely BIFL - ThermoWorks, instant thermometer is a 10/10 VIGL product, also their RFX wireless thermometer if you like to grill or braise stuff for long cooks. - Stainless steel and teak wood utensils. All clad and Williams Sonoma make great stuff - Marcato Otello pasta roller machine, this thing will be the most legit vintage looking tool in your kitchen, will produce the best pasta you’ve ever had, will impress every guest, and make you look like an influencer on the socials Other Tools: - Leatherman multi-tool. I’ve had mine for a decade now. - Stihl products, chainsaw, leaf blowers, trimmers, etc - Weber products, grills mainly House: - get a head start on quality picture frames you will ultimately need for your wedding photos. People don’t think about this, but after the wedding you’re probably going to have to spend another thousand on prints and frames for the photos. - quality hardware like candelabras, etc - pretty plants that will last a lifetime, big monsteras, citrus trees, fancy orchids, etc.

  Very specific question for UK ppl on BIFL

  One of the small battery jump starters. They are about the size of a paperback book. I use mine to start my bike, car and lawnmower. Small enough to fit in a pannier or glove box. EasyJet sized backpack. You can get these rectangular backpacks that are exactly easyJet overhead sized. Leatherman wave. Not sure if Argos sells them but they are easily the best tool I have. Add the extra sockets to it and it’s perfect.

  Looking for a good BIFL pocket knife.

  Pocket knife only? Buck 110/112 series. They are heavy. For something lighter, Spyderco pm2 but it’s more expensive. Benchmade 940 as well but they are expensive for a pocket knife. Kershaw leek is a nice alternative to it. Avoid gerber and buck (either than 110/112), SOG as well Multitool knife? Swiss Army knife by far, they will last a lifetime. Leatherman for heavy use, particularly the higher end ones like the surge or wave or charge

  I look for something special that will last in every country or city I visit. I try to research the area and history and things they are known for or famous for too. I included some US places too. I can’t think of everything but here’s some I thought of Rome - savinelli pipe(turkey you could get a meerschaum one) Florence Italy - leather watch holder and leather jacket, Florence is a big leather city. Naples Italy - hand made and painted ceramic bowl and olive oil container from Vietri near amalfi coast Dublin - Peterson pipe (similar to getting a Savi in Italy) Guinness glass Aran islands in Ireland - wool cardigan and wool blanket Germany - Nomos Watch (German movement is made there and their own special style) Denmark - Ole Lynggaard jewelry ring, georg jensen is from there too. Also Lego. Chicago, Illinois - horween leather boots and a bag. Horween is based out of Chicago. Also a hat from Optimo one of the last old fashioned hatters around.   Vitamix. Robocoupe. Bosch (kitchen appliances). Lee Valley/Veritas. Lie Nielson. Herder chef knives. Mac knives. G and L guitars. Taylor guitars (I'm not a fan of their style/tone, but their QC is best in the acoustic factory guitar scene. PRS guitars (some of the best factory electric guitar QC). Toyota/Lexus. They just work. I have a Honda, which is pretty reliable...but they chitzied on plastic floorpan clips instead of metal. Bottom of my car started going "whoosh" after 54000 miles. Never had an issue on my 1997 Corolla. Spyderco. Victorinox. Leatherman. solid warranty, and decent QC, even with all the Chinese clones. Mitotuyo micrometers. Built different. Tom Bihn bags. Waterfield designs. IMHO significantly better and tougher than Chrome (wore a hole through a corner in 1 month) and Timbuck2. Excellent ergos. Excellent workmanship and materials. Patagonia.

  I bought a cheap, small rice cooker in 2009 or so and we still use it all the time. Awesome sauce. Plug it in, add rice and water, put the lid on, hit the switch, and in less than a half hour, Bob's your uncle. Oh, and any Leatherman tool.   Leatherman Pocket Survival Tool (1984)

  I don't break my leathermen tools, I eventually loose them. I use mine daily, I don't think they've ever made a bad model. (novelty tools not included)

  Yeah, me too. I accidentally forgot to take my Leatherman micra out of my backpack on a recent trip and the TSA got it. I was so bummed, it’s amazing how much I used that thing.

Mac MTH 80 Chef's Knife, Zippo Lighter, Samsung Portable SSD Drives, Zeroll Icecream Scoop, French Press Coffee Maker, English Pub Glasses (hold hot and cold liquids).

  I received a Leatherman Wave multi-tool as a birthday present my senior year of high school. That was about 24 years ago. I still use it many times each week, and carry it with me daily.

  Leatherman Pocket Survival Tool (1984)

  I cashed in all my Zyn Rewards(don’t Judge) and got a Leatherman wingman. And it is such a well made multitool. The case it came with wasn’t the best but it is all around really solid and well made.

  What did you buy not realizing you bought it for life?

  I bought a leatherman about 20 years ago. Didn't know much about them, just needed a pocket knife to take camping and on hikes, and it looked cool. I still use it nearly every day around my home, \*finally\* bought the bit set for it so I have more driver bits.

  Has everything we buy reduced in quality over time? Has anything increased in quality or stayed high quality and durable?

  I can think of a few things that are as holding the line and a few categories that have improved. Lego is pretty much the same as when I was a kid other than more variety of bricks. Leatherman makes better tools than when I first encountered them and there was only THE Leatherman tool. In fact folding knives in general are currently in the middle of a quality renaissance. A decent knife has never been cheaper than right now (inflation adjusted). Some things have gone both ways. Like right now you can buy some of the crappiest bed sheets ever made, but really good stuff is more accessible than it’s ever been. I’d say watches are similar. There are $2 watches that are total garbage. There are solid watches at amazing prices. There are technological marvels at premium prices, and there are luxury works of art that outclass creations of the past at prices that dwarf all that have preceded them. Computers also fall in this category. We note have some of the most budget priced turds I’m existence, but also plenty of stuff better than ever existed. And while it has little use, I’d argue that there’s pretty broad examples of better packaging than ever before (I’ll blame Apple for this). Also premium food gadgets are just all over the place and the real luxury stuff is pretty nice.

  Victorinox Climber almost daily usage since 2016. Leatherman Wave+ also ok.

  BIFL: tactical knife under $50?

  I would suggest a leatherman wave.It is a multitool instead of a knife but it does have both a straight and serrated balde on it. They are incredibly versatile and I am pretty sure they have a 75 year warranty. Now they typically cost around $110 new. But they typically float around $40 to $60 used on ebay. I bought a used one years ago and haven't yet regretted it.
