  legos! they are also really well made, look into the manufacturing process if you ever have the time if they like eating things go for the larger duplo blocks so they don’t swallow the bricks

  *Nothing* will keep them totally focused. Exploring is a big part of this stage. :) That said, Lego Duplo are awesome and meet the brief. They can build and deconstruct, they can do imaginative play with the chunky minifigures, etc. I’ve also never met a kid who didn’t love a small wooden toy kitchen with pots, pans, and fake food—our Hape one (fewer bells and whistles than some of the KidKraft ones, but better materials and construction) took a heckuva beating from our kid and maintained her interest from ages 2-5/6. Niblings and cousins in that age range loved it, too. You could also go with another building toy for tiny kids, like classic wooden blocks, but stay away from the magnet blocks for the lower part of that age range. Magna-tiles or Picasso Tiles are great, but the magnets inside them can break out of the casing and be a choking hazard for kids under three. Keep ‘em far away from kids who put stuff in their mouth.

  Any of the building toys do this. We told everyone any time they ask, even still. If you're unsure what to get my daughter, lego/magnatile/Lincoln logs are always a great gift. Watching her build and tear apart over and over for hours is amazing. The unexpected intricacies that emerge are fun for them and the parents.

  That’s a good point, people love to complain when things go downhill but don’t say much when they improve. I’d say Apple’s laptops have actually gotten better again lately. Way better battery life, cooler design, the M-series chips are wild. LEGO too! The sets now are insanely detailed compared to what we had as kids. Even cars like Toyota and Hyundai have really stepped up their game over the years

  Kids and buying it for the next life!

  We have the Lincoln logs my mom had her classroom for who knows how long. Also LEGOs that were not only my husband’s, but all of his older siblings as well. We have books and Barbie’s that were mine and my mom’s as well.

  These were built to be rebuilt. On the Felco website you can order almost any part of any model individually or as a kit. What other products could be given the ship of theseus treatment like this?

  BIFL items to gift to someone when they’re young?

  Yes! LEGO! I got rid of mine when I was about 21 (sold them, I was a dumb college student), and got back into them about 7 years ago. One of the first things I bought was a ship I had as a kid that I remembered more vividly than any other set, because I had lost the instructions and would constantly be trying to reassemble it from memory. LEGO may not be bifl, but it’s pretty close, and it can be a lifelong hobby as well.

  Streadler mechanical pencils LEGO Liberty tabletop flatware - from the kids stainless steel to adults I’ve been amazed at the quality Redland cotton sheets Brooklinen towels - holy crap I ordered these with my bedsheets (I didn’t find the sheets impressive) but I am obsessed with their towels. I don’t understand how they’re not famous for their towels. wecks jars for leftovers - they have a replacement for the rubber ring and a glass lid I’m coming around to Cotopaxi since it’s repairable like Patagonia Patagonia for my winter coats and luggage Reima kids outdoor gear, I got some used and my two kids used it. We passed it on and the winter coats and boots still look brand new. You’d never know they were on their 6-8th kid at this point. Blueland refillable hand soap containers. My kids have been abusing them for 7 years and they still somehow work perfectly. They’re made of glass and have been dropped on my tile floor a handful of times and still somehow didn’t break. Adidas backpack - got this after frustration with beans crappy gear now on clearance at tjmaxx and it had a lifetime guarantee. It’s 3 years into my kid abusing it and is holding up amazingly well for a bag I only bought because it was pink and 3 weeks into school and I was tired. Ball canning jars - they just have it figured out Franklin well pumps (not buy for life so much as better product with better longevity). Other than that, local artists crafts I tend to find have amazing quality. Cutting boards, furniture from carpenters, cabinet makers tend to have the best and I go there first. I had a carpenter make me a coffee table and 4 adults could use that as a bench. It’s so sturdy. I’ve been fairly impressed so far by little adventures kids dress up clothing. They’re machine washable and years later actually are doing extremely well which is amazing for kids dress up clothing. I won’t know if it’s really BIFL level until it’s passed down to 6+ kids through my friends and they report back. So far 2 kids and approximately 4 years later it’s still going strong and has the gems and glitter still. I know underwear shouldn’t be BIFL but Hanna Andersson kids underwear is phenomenal quality There’s are companies who I previously considered for their longevity of products not always BIFL who have compromised quality and I no longer recommend them: Primary kids clothing - bought these in the early days of the brand and their kids cotton dresses have gotten dramatically thinner Llbean - dropped their guarantee on products and my kids backpack in preschool fell apart 3 separate times. She was 4 and it only carried a folder. My 2005 llbean was misused, overfilled and worn excessively and is in amazing shape. They suck now. Bombas socks - wear way faster now. My 2017 socks are in better shape than my 2023 socks. Gould well pumps are absolutely shite now

  I'm in my 30s and I still regularly use bricks in my builds that I inherited from my uncles that were made in the early 80s. Around 20% of my bricks are older than I am, and most of the rest I've had since high school.  Whenever people talk about bifl, I ALWAYS jump straight to my Legos

  Companies with the best customer service/customer support?

  Leatherman, Victorinox, Osprey. I've heard great things about OR and Patagonia's CS as well. also LEGO was fantastic too. My kids use my old lego sets so i consider that a BIFL toy FWIW.

  BIFL Souvenirs from European Countries

  I look for something special that will last in every country or city I visit. I try to research the area and history and things they are known for or famous for too. I included some US places too. I can’t think of everything but here’s some I thought of Rome - savinelli pipe(turkey you could get a meerschaum one) Florence Italy - leather watch holder and leather jacket, Florence is a big leather city. Naples Italy - hand made and painted ceramic bowl and olive oil container from Vietri near amalfi coast Dublin - Peterson pipe (similar to getting a Savi in Italy) Guinness glass Aran islands in Ireland - wool cardigan and wool blanket Germany - Nomos Watch (German movement is made there and their own special style) Denmark - Ole Lynggaard jewelry ring, georg jensen is from there too. Also Lego. Chicago, Illinois - horween leather boots and a bag. Horween is based out of Chicago. Also a hat from Optimo one of the last old fashioned hatters around. Post falls, Idaho - buck knife from factory Beaverton/portland, OR - benchmade knife also Leatherman tools nearby apparently the knife capital of the world.

  Yes for everything but Legos at this point. Part of it is that, once my son is done with a Lego, it gets harvested for parts to build into something else, but part of it is also because the Legos that my parents still have from when I was young still work with the ones we get now.

  I recently watched a video about this. The price per brick has remained very constant for sets sold by LEGO. The variation and number of the bricks per set is much higher than when I was young.

  Agreed on prices for sets, but you can still get a lot of basic legos for not a lot of money relative to their quality. Prices on the sets are pure supply and demand. And probably a reaction to how many instructions can be found online for builds that don’t need a set.

  I can think of a few things that are as holding the line and a few categories that have improved. Lego is pretty much the same as when I was a kid other than more variety of bricks. Leatherman makes better tools than when I first encountered them and there was only THE Leatherman tool. In fact folding knives in general are currently in the middle of a quality renaissance. A decent knife has never been cheaper than right now (inflation adjusted). Some things have gone both ways. Like right now you can buy some of the crappiest bed sheets ever made, but really good stuff is more accessible than it’s ever been. I’d say watches are similar. There are $2 watches that are total garbage. There are solid watches at amazing prices. There are technological marvels at premium prices, and there are luxury works of art that outclass creations of the past at prices that dwarf all that have preceded them. Computers also fall in this category. We note have some of the most budget priced turds I’m existence, but also plenty of stuff better than ever existed. And while it has little use, I’d argue that there’s pretty broad examples of better packaging than ever before (I’ll blame Apple for this). Also premium food gadgets are just all over the place and the real luxury stuff is pretty nice.

  The difference between generations…

  so I may or may not be too eastern european for this but here we go: 2.: I'm at a stage of my life where I can only refer to my own upbringing (genX parents). I did not have too many actual birthday parties overall but my parents and grandparents were pretty generous with christmas and birthday gifts, so I think the 10+ gifts a year holds. solution: we had 1 large plastic container for miscellaneous toys and 1 large plastic container for LEGO. a smaller container for toy trains. when playtime ends you shove everything in it's container (and eventually teach the kids to) and then shove the container under the stairs or in a closet or something. protip for many little pieces lying around: have the kids play on a blanket instead of the ground, and at the end you just grab the four corners and everything is collected. free de-clutterification. 3.: IKEA stuff can last a long time. we've never had a furniture item fail, when we grew out the kid beds and little desk we donated them all to other families we knew who just got kids that age. younger coworkers etc. there will always be people who will appreciate perfectly good old furniture. and it WILL be perfectly good if you treat it with just a little respect. anchor your shelves to the wall, keep them clean, and they will last forever. 4.: just care about your stuff what else can I say. teach your kids (and yourself) the importance of caring about your stuff. it's not only the cre of BuyItForLife, it's also just a good life philosophy to have.
