That tells you to stay away from hp I should hope, I had a hp I believe around a year or so the hinges failed. Specs were great. After that I’ve never bought anything besides Lenovo ThinkPad series T’s. Now since I’ve been using a iPhone for years now I’m thinking of getting a MacBook Pro.

Lenovo T or X series refurbished. Or, get one off Ebay. I have both a X260 and a Yoga 260. Yoga can be a hit or miss. Mine doesn't like to be lifted by a corner as something shifted on the mainboard. Or a loose connector. Probably the ram shifting in the socket. I stuck to the 260 because of replaceable ram and m2 drives. Bought used, both of them are 10 years old. Parts are cheap and plentyful. They are meant to be serviced by the user. If you want usb C charging, go x270 and newer. Just be advised newer ones are partially soldering memory and drives on the board.

What brands/products do you AVOID because of their poor longevity?
HP Business laptops are built different however. I've never seen an Elitebook or Probook fail without user fault. Try getting a used 3 year old ones that enterprises sell at a fraction of the price. Same goes for Lenovo ThinkPads.

on tech: my iphone 13 mini is lasting longer than any phone ive owned, ever. lenovo thinkpad has taken much abuse and is still chugging along. my 3ds has lasted … a decade. a gift i got from my friend is this leather cover a6 loose leaf notebook that i can buy paper refills for. also has taken much abuse. my leather belongings tend to survive much longer (no duh) like random belts, shoes, etc. i wouldnt recommend a backpack from decathlon with elastic straps. they become useless in a year or two. much better to get something without those elastic bands. the construction of the bags arent as robust either but it has survived going everywhere with me so thats good.

Build quality. Business class laptops from Lenovo and Dell also have a pretty good build quality, but they're not quite where Apple is. Battery life. What's another high performance laptop with a 24 hour battery life? My ~1 year old Lenovo will last about 4 hours without needing to charge. Form factor. Where can you get a premium small laptop that's not a low-spec POS? The Lenovo X1 is about your only choice, but that maxes out at 32GB of RAM, and you're very limited on CPU choice. Screen. Most laptops don't have nearly as nice of a screen, or as high of a resolution as the MacBooks do. Plus they're bright enough to use outside easily. Sure other laptops have higher resolution available (I have a lenovo P16s for work that has a beautiful screen, but it's a huge laptop and not a form factor I want for my personal laptop). It's not Windows. Windows 11 sucks. And it keeps getting worse. Linux has gotten way better, but it's still not great for the average user. Mac OS isn't perfect, but it generally does just work, and it tends to run much better than Windows does on comparable hardware.

"laptop shopping is such a pain because every brand acts like their budget model is some kind of revolutionary breakthrough when most of them are just adequate at best. for basic stuff like web browsing, watching netflix, and light photo editing, there's no reason to blow your budget unless you have specific needs like gaming or heavy video work. main things that actually matter are decent display quality - 1080p minimum, nothing lower or you'll hate looking at it. enough ram so you can have multiple tabs and programs open without everything grinding to a halt - 8gb bare minimum but 16gb is way better. storage that won't fill up in like a month - 256gb+ ssd so things actually load fast. budget end, lenovo ideapad 3i chromebook or acer gateway chromebook handle browsing, google docs, streaming just fine. cheap, lightweight, battery lasts forever. if you need more local storage or windows compatibility, that nimo 15.6 fhd with 16gb ram plus 1tb ssd is honestly pretty solid value. not gonna win any performance awards but the ram and ssd combo makes it way snappier than most laptops in this price range. stepping up slightly, hp 15.6"" portable gives you windows, bigger screen, better build quality which makes longer work sessions way more comfortable. at this budget level that extra screen real estate and decent keyboard can make a huge difference if you're gonna be using it for hours daily. really comes down to what you're planning to do with it and how much you want to spend. casual use, chromebooks work fine. need windows or more storage, go mid-range. anything demanding and you're looking at way higher prices. you can check [this list](https://freebiesdealsandrewards.com/dp-best_best__laptopsy) for more."

With how quickly computer specs change, I decided the most BIFL thing I could do was get a Lenovo that was upgradeable for work etc. and a cloud computing subscription for graphics-heavy gaming that my laptop couldn't handle. I came to the conclusion that it would be more sustainable to use a cloud computing service than to frequently replace my own tech whenever next-gen games came out.

The current Macs, despite their power, are degrading in performance with updates such as the last Thaoe macOS, the hardware is all soldier and if the hard drive is fucking, you have to change the entire motherboard, a very high expense. Look for the last ThinkPads of Lenovo, Hard and RAM disk can be changed, as well as the battery is relatively easy to change it. If you put 2 operating systems (Windows and Linux), if you use Linux, you will not have programmed obsolescence at least in the software. All the best.

I'll make this simpler for you. I'd go windows unless you're 100% ready to buy into the apple ecosystem. I have other qualms with apple, but they don't play nice with others and won't integrate as well unless it's apple products. You also will pay more for the same internal specs. Try to find sales or deals. I'd get a 512gb- 1tb hard drive, 16gb ram and a newer Ryzen 5 or 7 CPU. If not Ryzen gets at least an i5 maybe an i7 depending on what's available. Should be able to get a very capable laptop for 500-700 dollars and I would look for a 13-15 inch screen for classes. The newer Ryzen chips are great for all around use and will easily run lighter games. Laptops like these will give you a long life of you treat them well. People will be for or against different manufacturers but it's not always a guarantee regardless. It's somewhat easy to find dell and Lenovo enterprise machines refurbished for even a little less if you want to save more, but just look up the specs of whatever you want to get before buying to make sure it aligns with your expectations. If you wanna run games then you gotta go with a Windows laptop. Then your most bifl choice is one of the Lenovo Thinkpads, ones that are most recommended. I suggest you get one of the newer "AMD AI chip" models since they have some incredible iGPU, which will allow you to run most basic or simple games, but stay usable for other stuff (instead of gaming ones that'll be heavy, hot, loud and battery draining)

That's really the best and worst thing about framework. I could spend a YEAR thinking about MY configuration. I can't even fathom deciding someone else's. That's why in my original comment, I said Mac. It's a general purpose laptop that has touchscreen support. Other than that, it's usually brand loyalty. I wouldn't get a gaming laptop imo if Minecraft and Minecraft like games are your biggest computation (I love stardew valley and I can play it on virtually anything). Gaming Laptops are extremely power hungry. Most run a few hours, maybe 4 MAX on battery. I daily a Lenovo Z13. I love it, I basically sleep with it. If you can find a refurb model, you'd save 400ish bucks, I'd recommend it. It's on the smaller slide. Like most kids board books would be larger than it. It's great on battery life, and it's a good keyboard feel. It's touchscreen too, but I don't really use it that often. I think I got mine (the 1st Gen) for about 700 bucks, nearly brand new a year ago. Laptops isn't really a BIFL thing, because technology ages very quickly. Hardware becomes too capable and more efficient, and the software stays near tandem to support it. This makes a laptop worth 1k bucks 2 years ago, easily 500 dollars now.

No worries. I love Lenovo. I use the Lenovo Z13 (1st Gen) as my Daily. I don't like the direction Lenovo is going. But oh well. I'll probably buy a framework if I ever warrant the money. I like bulkier laptops, and I think the general consumer doesn't agree (I say that as I daily a 13 inch laptop lol). I always purchase laptops refurbished or for parts, and so I can most of my stuff for around 20% of their original price. Laptops can be fun, but there are succinct hardware limits. Unlike in a desktop, you can't just replace the motherboard to support X chip. If the laptop never had a release that had Y in it, you're SOL.

The business class laptops, the ones that start with T. The carbon is pretty ubiquitous so parts should be cheap. Most of the time, I don't have issue with Lenovo or Dell Latitudes. Everything else is pretty much a nightmare. Framework is honestly the best answer here. It's very DIY and repair friendly. Like, extremely. A desktop computer is extremely repairable and modular, and only one laptop company follows it. Framework.

Reparability and upgreadability should be top priority if you're in this subreddit, so there are only 2 logical suggestions: Framework, the 13 should be the right one for you. The most BIFL laptop so far by far. Lenovo ThinkPad, the thicker, repairable models. The other option would be one of the smaller manufacturers, Tuxedo, Slimbook, StarLabs, etc. Caviat that there is no BIFL laptop. but a repairable and upgradeable one is as close as it gets. And nobody who supports or promotes any of the manufacturers actively opposing right to repair has anything to do here. That's just one of the most evil things to do as a manufacturer.

Honestly with many manufacturers quality will probably be better with some older refurbs. New things today are GRABAGE you can barely upgrade. I buy refurbished Lenovos on eBay and recommend them to anyone looking for a new laptop. Not sure what your budget is but if you're looking for windows devices check out Lenovo Thinkpad T series.

We bought a gently used (1-2 years old) Lenovo for our kids several years ago and it is still being used. I think the key is to get something that is not super old, doesn't have signs of heavy wear, and is actually a good value. The used one we bought was about half of what new computers with similar specs were so it seemed like a good risk/reward situation.

I prefer Mac for my personal and work machines, but no modern Mac laptop is BIFL. While they tend to last a long time, they are difficult to impossible to repair if something does go wrong. Business laptops aim for tough and repairable. Lenovo, HP, and Dell are often mentioned. Framework takes repairability to another level though, as you can actually upgrade the laptops with new parts over time. They’re a fairly new company though, but they have supposedly lived up to the promise for the most part.

That's a workload that won't need anything special for specs. I'd suggest just looking out for anything with about 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. For having a few things open at once and space to save the stuff he'll need to, respectively. Other than that, just go down to a local brick and mortar computer store and check out how you find they're built. Sticking with brands you've heard of before is a safe bet (Lenovo, Asus, Acer, Dell,...), except for HP and Toshiba. If he needs a laptop because he wants to store it away and not carry it around, build quality doesn't actually have to be great, either. He could actually run everything off of a mid range smartphone, connected to a display and keyboard, if he wanted to.

I work in education and can therefore get windows 11 education edition for free. I've never used apple OS before, but I don't think anything I use specifically needs windows. My current laptop is an HP envy from 2020 and has a ryzen 7 4700U and 16GB ram. It is still more than capable of doing everything I use it for (matlab, spreadsheets, word+powerpoint, some light gaming, small amounts of autocad), but the hinge popped out and shattered my screen. I have been quoted \~£450 for repair. I could get something lower specced, but it seems like just matching the specs in my recently smashed laptop would cost about £600, so I figured \~£900 for something more modern might be good value for futureproofing. Honestly, there’s no single “best” laptop for everyone, depends on what you want to do. I’ve tried a bunch of these and here’s my take: If you just want the best all-around laptop and don’t mind the price, the MacBook Air 2025 (M4) is hard to beat. Battery lasts forever and it’s super fast for pretty much anything except gaming. If you’re already using iPhone or iPad, it just works better. If you game a lot, get the ASUS ROG Strix G16. It’s fast, runs cool, and the screen is really nice for games. Not the lightest thing but worth it if you care about performance. HP 17 Laptop is honestly good if you need something cheap but still powerful. Huge RAM and storage so it won’t slow down with tons of tabs open or big files. Screen isn’t full HD though, so keep that in mind. Dell Vostro 15.6" is solid for students—good build, decent price, can handle schoolwork easily. Lenovo V15 is a safe choice if you’re mostly doing office stuff, emails, docs etc. So yeah, pick based on what you actually need it for. No point spending extra on stuff you won’t use tbh.

If you’re in the market for windows laptops imo Lenovo enterprise models have a good life span on them. We manage a fleet (Lenovo t14) and expect 6 years economic life out of them, but have some that have easily got to 10 years. Keyboards and drives are replaceable although I think the new models do not have replaceable ram.

A two year old Dell shouldn’t be going out on you. We have 5-6 year old Dells (and older) that are still running fine. Before you decide to spend hundreds of dollars on a new computer, check with your university to see if they have repair service on campus. If yes, get them to look at it for you and price repairs, if no then find a computer service center near you (Best Buy, U Break I fix)and get an estimate for cost of repairs…you may have to pay a “bench” fee for them to diagnose but that usually goes toward repair if they repair it. Many universities have loaners for while a computer is in the shop, so check on that too! Most universities have an “in” with Apple, Dell and Lenovo to get discounted pricing for students. Check on these prices before you go anywhere else. We have also purchased refurbished Dell computers from Dellrefurbished and refurbished Macs from Mac or All Trades. One of my kids just finished grad school with a 2019 MacBook Air we got for about $500 in Dec 2023 after their 2014 refurbished gave up…

An average sized Thinkpad from Lenovo is good, not too thin, not too bulky as they get complicated to take apart to repair. Nothing too fancy either like Lenovo Yogas I used to be a field technician for a small IT company repairing computers. They are by far the easiest to repair, software and hardware wise. Dell would be a close second, their self diagnostics they embedded into their computers are pretty accurate and have standard practices into their parts. Both have great support websites that you can navigate to solve most of small issues you may have to being able to serialize a new mobo. Avoid anything HP. Their RMA services tend to be difficult and all devices are hard-coded into their build, meaning even though this hardware device looks like it fits into your computer and should work, the serialization would deny it from working. Serialization is also difficult when working with a new mobo because if you screw it up you have to get another new mobo. I personally hate this anti-consumer practice. As far as your light gaming goes, that would pretty much be CPU dependant if you're going for a laptop without a dedicated GPU and would largely affect your budget. This you will have to research on.

I know this is going to get buried but as someone who's worked IT for just about 2 decades, please don't buy apple unless you can fix a computer yourself. They have some of the most UNETHICAL practices when it comes to laptop repair. They're apple geniuses will run rudimentary checks on your computer when you have a problem and when they can't fix it, they'll push for buying a new computer. They're integrated boards make it so that a fix to a small part means paying 4x to 10x the price since they have to replace EVERYTHING. It frustrating that a corporation that makes so much money does everything it can to squeeze out as much profit as possible by screwing it's uninformed customer base over. Like a lot of people have mentioned, if you want a work horse, get a Lenovo.

I’ve been an IT admin for a few decades, and have bought at this point probably thousands of computers, some of them for personal use and a huge number of them for business. My personal thought on it is that Apple Max are down the most reliable hardware I’ve ever seen. But given that you are looking for commodity PC hardware, my recommendation is Lenovo. And nothing you can buy at a store. Only there business focused products. They tend to be more expensive, not as fast or not as feature Rich as their consumer based laptops. But tend to be much more reliable because they are designed to be used day in and day out for 40 hours a week every week for years. That being said I have had some incredibly good luck as well with Dell models. Right now I have a dell latitude that’s about nine years old that keeps on cranking away with no problems. And I’ve had many many latitudes that similarly lasted forever. The real secret of my opinion is to only purchase business grade commercial laptops, never consumer.

Personally I like Dell laptops, I’ve had a few Inspirons. I tend to upgrade laptops every 5-7 years and my Dells always still work okay at the end. Lenovos are also decent, my work laptops are all Lenovos and they last a decent time and they don’t feel cheap. To last a really long time you don’t want to cheap out too much, you’ll want to go for the best gpu/cpu laptop you can afford with a ssd drive (maybe even an extra m.2 slot so you can get extra storage). Remember that expensive doesn’t equal good, there are lots of laptops with shitty gpu/cpu set ups that are $800+ but will be the same quality as a cheap $200 chromebook. Find a few laptops you like and look up the benchmarks of their components, you’ll want the best ones bc in 5-7 years they’ll probably be mid range or upper low range. So more than usable in the future, vs getting a midrange set up now it’ll be pretty out of date in a few years. If performance isn’t a big deal I’d still go higher end now just so it can stay usable for a long time. Tech changes fast so can’t guarantee it, but a high end set up should be able to last 10 years pretty easily if you’re aren’t gaming or video editing

Generally you want to look for the business class models, dell latitude(whatever it’s called now), thinkpad t or x series, hp elitebook/probook. Generally these models will have longer product cycles and service manuals. I would not buy a laptop that doesn’t have a service manual. There is framework which has some amazing repairability and good product design but is a newer product with some teething issues, higher pricing and more complex support processes. Framework does offer the option to keep your chassis and upgrade your motherboard.

Thinkpad all the way!!! Lenovo is good in general but when it comes to user repairability, they are far and above the only one to consider in my eyes. Other lines like IdeaPad really feel like they’re built to a different standard, meant to be tossed in the bin. But Thinkpad… you could be Will Smith in “I Am Legend” and that thing STILL wouldn’t fail you. My Thinkpad X1 Extreme has sortve become my own Ship of Theseus in a sense. I’ve taken the thing fully apart in order to fix something more times than I can count, and frankly it is still such a beast after 6 years time.

I’ve bought my family and myself a few Thinkpads since 2015 and I feel like they’re the best Windows laptops around BUT are NOT anywhere close to BIFL The 2015-2020 models had a rubber (I guess) rim around the screen that degraded within 5 years. It would break off, leaving black pieces everywhere. I tried to find instructions on how to replace just the rim on ifixit and I had to replace the screen entirely. Every other rubber part degraded as well, but I just took those out. Furthermore, not all models are upgradable either, you’ll really wanna find out what options are available. That said, still the best windows laptops around. My ThinkPad X1 Extreme that I do not bring out has upgraded storage and ram, keeping it up with current day specs.

HP couldn’t pay me to use or recommend their hardware. Unfortunately even light gaming is incompatible with reasonable battery life - even with GPU switching or ARM cpus. I’d highly highly highly recommend choosing which experience you want to maximize - what do you spend the most time doing scaled by enjoyment (ie 1hr gaming but highlight of ur weeknight vs working for yourself 8 hours where that extra power each day helps). I’ve had a 15” air with an old gaming laptop that I used only as a desktop computer. That was a great experience. Oh - last thing - used MacBooks stay relevant far longer than used gaming hardware. A 2year old Mac may be 80% as good as a current day Mac but a used gaming laptop will be 70/60% of a 2year windows laptop. My MacBook Air is almost 10 years old. I’ve always been a PC person but since my iPad and iPhone are my daily users, I thought a Mac would be nice for the compatibility, plus a good friend told me they rarely, if at all, get viruses. I don’t use a laptop that often so I don’t need anything fancy, mostly use it for my taxes every year. I went to do that again and got a message that my iOS wouldn’t support the software, but my Mac can’t be upgraded any more. A fond farewell, Mac. I’ve used Dell laptops at work and they keep getting worse every year, like a bad fan making crazy noises is a “known issue”. I’ve had to have mine replaced every 2 to 3 years. So when it came time to get a new laptop, I went with Lenovo. Having a PC laptop is just more intuitive for me and I’m hopeful it will last more than a few years. It’s reassuring to see it recommended here.

I ran a computer repair shop for 6 years. The number of apple laptops we got in for repairs was perfectly in line with their market share. Apple makes 9 billion a year off repairs and apple care. If they didn't need repairs that's an awful lot of money people are throwing away. I work field service now and my $500 Lenovo has been in the field with me every day for 6 years. It gets rained on a few times a year and it looks beat to hell, but haven't had to repair anything on it. If something were to break I would be able to fix it for $50-200 because Lenovo doesn't serialize parts. No computer is BIFL and short of bottom of the barrel netbooks and $299 best buy specials, unless they are physically damaged most will outlive their usefulness due to ever increasing computer power. Nothing Apple makes meets the criteria of the post, period.

For example, if you break the screen Lenovo sells replacements and publishes straightforward repair procedures that are easy to follow. Microsoft sells a large variety of replacement parts for their Surface laptops and tablets both on their own website and though ifixit. I have one and it's great, maybe not for everyone but it is a perfect match for me. It replaced my 9 year old MacBook, which held up so great after years of constant heavy work. While Framework is awesome and you can't go wrong with them, for the general public that doesn't need the heavy customization, taking price into consideration, I am inclined recommend Lenovo. Many of my friends, tech heavy and casual users, have Lenovo laptops and they are by far the most durable and quality-for-buck that you can get, specially with the many discounts you can find. Never buy anything from HP. Never. Apart from the laptop brand, some general suggestions. This year was slow for chips, so the previous generation stuff is almost the same and you can get better stuff cheaper (don't fall for any of the AI crap marketing). You mentioned light gaming, if you don't plan to play AAA titles and want a more portable and affordable option, AMD chips (and I think some of the new Intel ones but I don't have experience with them) have phenomenal integrated GPUs that can run many games perfectly. Also look into laptops that have replaceable SSDs so you can upsize later, replaceable RAM is nice, but not as important, as the CPU/GPU will more likely be the bottleneck first. Also, not a need per se, but laptops that charge via USB C PD are great, not only can you replace the charger easily, but you can share the charger with many other devices.

My lenovo was still going after 6 years, but in 2016 i started traveling a lot and just wanted something thinner and lighter. my boyfriend at the time (now husband) had the 2015 model and i liked it, so i got one. he’s still using his original one as well. surface pros aren’t easily repairable, but thats never been an issue for either of us. the keyboard and pen are still fine too. they’re going to stop giving free updates to windows 10 in October of this year. i’m not sure whether i’ll pay for the extended updates or get a new surface, but 9 years is a pretty good run. my husband is planning to ride it out, but i’m on the fence...we’ll see whether the software suites i use for work abandon windows 10 or not. i splurged for the newer surface dock for my home office a couple years ago, but that was more a want than a need.

Lenovo tend to be well put together, and easy to repair when something does break. There's a reason Lenovo is the largest supplier of business laptops. Working IT for a school district and talking to my fellow IT buddies, pretty much everyone had contracts with Lenovo to supply their workplaces with the 5000+ laptops needed. That being said, just about any enterprise, business, workstation grade laptop is miles better put together than the cheapy best buy ones. I had a Dell Precision that was solid as a rock. Asus, Acer, Microsoft, ick. Apple, yeah they are well put together and will keep trekking forever. But again, ick.

They've gone this way a bit with Thinkpads, but they're still relatively repairable. But I'm typing this from a 2024 Thinkpad X1, which has clearly made a bunch of compromises in favor of compactness. A\~2014 Thinkpad X or T series would have had a more modular keyboard and modular RAM. It would have had a removable battery. This one has the RAM soldered onto the motherboard, the keyboard probably built into the case, and I'd have to unscrew the back to replace the battery. Yet it's way lighter, the screen is markedly better, the battery life is long enough that I don't really even want to carry a spare. And the whole package is a lot less expensive (inflation-adjusted). I think Lenovo has done pretty well at keeping the best things about Thinkpads good while adapting them to modern desires. Aside from deleting the physical mouse buttons for a while I'm even a fan of their keyboard/touchpoint/touchpad combo.

I ran a department in a large enterprise organization that tested and selected laptops for use by employees. Use cases ranged from office users who plugged them in and cabled them to a desk where it never moved to people who strapped them to snowmobiles to travel up a mountain to a site... First thing to mention is that there is more to the discussion than rugged vs. not rugged. There is a class called semi-rugged that is typically a machine with improved shock resistance, a tough case but not generally protected from dust or water ingestion. (See Panasonic's Toughbook 53) In return it's a bit lighter and more business like than the fully rugged laptops. Assuming from your edit you are reasonably confident that a Toughbook is too heavy and large, then the response based on my experience is the T series Lenovo. One test we would to is to take the screen and flex it by the corners to see if the hinges were up to the task. We often had HPs and Dells that would begin to crack or even not close after torquing them like this, but never the Lenovo. One easy indicator is how far outboard the hinges are located. The closer to center, the easier they fail a torque test. Lenovo's hinges are furthest to the edge and provide the most support. Here's the big caveat.... In an enterprise, it's very expensive for employees to be trading in and trading up machines all the time. For you, it's a different scenario. How long do you really want it to last? Do you want to pay twice as much for a machine that will last twice as long when the rate of technological change is so rapid and your switching cost is relatively low? Consider living with the fact that it will fail and accepting you will be getting a new one in two years. Spend half the money now, and the other half then. The second half of the money will get you a brand new, improved spec machine to be using for years 3 and 4.

Lenovo Thinkpad T series is what you want. Lenovo is general is nice in that none of their models fall apart that quickly (I have a Thinkpad Edge that's on it's last legs, but it's like 6 years old, and had heavy use with lots of travel, so I can't really complain that much. And yeah, it's the hinges). Even the less durable Thinkpads, like the edge series, have *fantastic* ergonomics for a laptop. The keyboard is nice to use, and if you're having repetitive stress issues with the trackpad, they've also got the nipple so you can switch things up. You can also change what movements do what for your trackpad. I've had Macbooks last pretty well too: the metal cases last well (the old plastic ones used to break apart where you'd put your wrist, and that hurt), but one of the really frustrating things about them is that they make it very hard to replace an old battery or hard drive: and batteries have never lasted me 6 years (also, their charging cords break all the time). They also don't really allow as much customization or comfort. My hands, for some reason, hurt really, really badly when I use two finger scrolling. Macbooks cannot be configured (without serious hacking) to allow any other method of scrolling unless you want to get out a mouse.

I would not worry so much about "the most" rugged laptop. No matter how great the hardware is, until (and if) some modular replaceable/upgradeable laptop series comes out, these things will only ever have a couple year life span. You only need to get something decent. The lenovo T and X series are definitely legit; I have a Dell i bought from their outlet 2.5 years ago, which is peeling in the laminate but otherwise physically intact. Honestly, if you stay away from trash-tier laptops and treat them with an iota of respect, I would be surprised if you ever ran into this issue again.

It is a 15" 2 in 1 with the newest generation of intel processor (i5 or i7, up to you) 8 GB of RAM, a 256GB SSD, a 3200X1800 display and most importantly a built out of 800 induvidual bits of aluminium and steel. I promise you I am not a sales man. It should be in budget for you and it is a Solid buy. If you want though, you can go for the more consumer targeted, 700 series, only difference being the hinge is a little less flashy (but still great find you) and you having a 1080p display.

Hell even I have to agree and I hate windows. I'm in computer engineering and we were issued these Surface things, I hated it at first but now, especially with VDI, I sort of prefer it. Lightning fast and all the corporate stuff work very well. As someone who makes his money outside the windows world, I have to give credit where it is due. MS did a good job here. However it is not tough, just has less part to break. It is a tablet, albeit a good one. Back when we got dirty, we had basically three laptops we gave out to field staff. These were not IT people. These were land surveyors, farmers, mountaineers, and other outdoor people. We had a thin Fuji, Lenovo X (with the tilting screen), and toughbooks. The Levovos always performed the worst. THere was nothong particularly wrong with the Fuji, but screens broke and water and dust got in everywhere. Panasonic has rubber gussets to cover ports and the hinge is very well made. For a laptop that claims to be tough it is also fairly responsive and has a decent display. At home, the laptop I have had for about 4-5 years now, with a bend in the aluminum frame from a drop is a metal HP elitebook. I absolutely love it. It is very well made, top spec for the time, and can take a beating. I take it on the road, bang it in airports, and generally treat it with no respect. It is fine. Also runs Debian without any issues, which I need for work. If you are not going to be killing it in a swamp, I highly recommend it. (I have the hp elitebook 8460p kind of crappy screen in that model but I needed it for work)
