Then start learning about it. It’s a massive world and no one can just list off the best five retailers because there aren’t any. You just have to start dipping your toes into the broader fashion world. Pop into r/HeritageWear and r/JapaneseStreetwear for a start. Dive down the YouTube rabbit hole. Japanese fashion in general is very focused on quality (their denim scene is insanely good), but there are good manufacturers in China like Bronson MFG, in Canada like Naked and Famous, in the USA like Brave Star, England like Maharishi and Story MFG, in India like Garuda, and international brands like Polo RL and Levi’s still make plenty of great clothes if you know what to look for. These are just a few off the top of my head but it’s a wide world when you start looking past what’s available at your local mall.

Reasonably priced natural fiber clothing
I’ve had good success with LL Bean women’s basics like their supima cotton tees and the like. Haven’t tried a long sleeve shirt but I know they make various styles of the same material so might be worth a try! I know “reasonably priced” is different to everyone but they are on sale frequently and I think worth the money As for jeans, honestly, my 2 favorite pairs are currently men’s Levi’s. They’re 100% cotton which is harder to find in the women’s styles and they have real pockets!

Quality has never been cheap; you just need to account for inflation. (But I agree that quality is more scarce and hard to find than ever!) Soles always wear out but if you want leather uppers that last years to decades, you can absolutely find those in the $400-$600 range, and plan to spend $40 on a heel replacement and $100 for a full resole. Jeans never lasted a decade unless you just used them for sitting. You can still get very durable jeans from Levi’s for $50 on sale.

Jeans that don't fall apart after a year or two? Been wearing these Wranglers and the quality is cheap sweatshop level. Is there a specific type of denim or another material I should look for if I want something long lasting?
Last year I cleaned out my old room at my mom's house and found a pair of Levi's 501s from about 1998. Still wearable but for the fact that I'm way too fat now lol. But yea, seeing those made it abundantly clear how much Levis has cheapened their product since then. It's a damn shame.

I would focus only on classic brands I love that hold up forever: Pendleton, LL Bean, Orvis, Duluth, Barbour, Levis, Ralph Lauren, Max Mara, St. John, Lafayette 148, some Brooks Brothers, vintage Armani. I would thrift more. I would buy more classic basics. Wish I would have known about fabrics and good construction in my 20s.

Quite frankly, currently, buying jeans new is shooting yourself in the foot. The only good reason to buy new at all is if you need a rare size (if you're plus-size or very small, namely). Otherwise, you're overpaying for undermade garments. There are good brands out there, but they are few and far between, and overpriced regardless because they appeal to that denimhead market, not "people looking for durable jeans". Just buy vintage Levi's or Wrangler, something like that. Won't break the bank and will last you long enough.

Help deciding which jacket to buy to serve as both casual and business casual wear
As another user said, these aren’t business casual but casual/workwear. If you tried wearing a trucker jacket for business casual, you may look out of place. LZLER seems like a cheaply made fast fashion jacket. No go and avoid at all costs. Levi’s trucker jacket you linked isn’t much better, as it’s not 100% cotton and Levi’s cheaper denim does not last as well. But if I had to choose between the two you listed, this is the “better” choice, but not buy it for life. Since this is the buy it for life sub, I’m gonna say a college student with a tight budget looking for a buy it for life jacket that’s more workwear inspired is best off checking eBay, thrift shops, or used marketplaces for more sustainable construction. Filson, Carhartt, vintage Levis is what you’re looking for. No elastane/polyester. Usually 100% cotton/wool.

Why Levi's jeans quality is very poor?
Speaking as a denimhead, I've bought modern Levi's this year and have never seen issues like that on the hems, or really any issues. I only had one minor issue and that was a QC issue having to do with sizing, and Levi's righted that wrong by giving me a new pair of my choosing free of charge, and letting me keep the defective pair. A lot of people say however that vintage Levi's from the 90's and older tend to be better built etc. I own vintage Levi's and have worn some acid washed 90's Levi's in the past, and honestly, quality-wise I feel a difference with some pairs, but with others its not as apparent. I also don't ride my jeans to the brink though, even modern jeans which lots of people complain about can last me decades.

You don't. You go to retailers that specialize in that kind of good. The nature of online sales means that it's a race to the bottom for quality and pice. Sure, the same looking moen faucet is $130 at my local plumbing supply store and $70 at home depot. But the body is made of brass instead of plastic and it'll last nearly forever with serviceable seals. Sure, Levi's are $40 on Amazon and $75 at my local clothing store. But the denim is twice the weight and its better stiched. The Amazon ones dont last a year. The others i've had some for 20, and theyre identical to the ones I bought last year locally too. If you want to find and buy quality goods, you need to inspect them before you buy. Online all they have to do is look OK in photos.

I've been shopping around for one, too, and haven't found anything I like. I think the best option is to buy either a vest or jacket (and then cut off the sleeves yourself) from eBay of either Levi's or Lee brands made no later than the 90s when they were still made in America.

They have regular 30% off sales on their site. I just bought a pair of their selvedge 505s on sale for $100. I've also bought their "Premium" line 505s on sale at 30% off. I find the Levi's Premium jeans to be good quality for daily wear and work around the house. I've been alternating two pair for the last 18 months and they're in excellent condition. I understand the economics of selling trash versions of their best-known styles at Walmart and Costco for $30, but I've worn those and they just fall apart. Usually the pockets go first. Levi's didn't go public until 2019. So, we can expect the rot to really ramp up in the coming years, as the company will be under pressure to increase its revenue by diluting its brand.

After buying my Studio D’Artisan 18oz Godzilla jeans at their store in Osaka, I went to Levi’s flagship store in San Francisco to check out their Japanese made selvedge vintage 501s. They cost more than my SDAs did in Japan ($300+ vs $270) and while they were nice, they weren’t •as• nice, and really leads me to believe that the best made stuff in Japan •stays• in Japan, that is, doesn’t get exported.

Levi’s has different product lines with different quality standards. Anything under Levi’s “Premium” (leather brown tag), which can be found in actual Levi’s stores, will be of lesser quality. Then you have “Made and Crafted” (blue leather tag) and finally “LVC” (Levi’s Vintage Clothing), which makes reissues of old pieces. The stuff you find at outlets generally has a paper tag instead of leather that’s an easy way to tell them apart.

Jeans used to be made with all cotton denim and natural indigo dye, as with everything, they shifted production to a more industrial process. Many jeans also have polyester for the stretch. These modern jeans have a few advantages, they are almost all pre-shrunk and pre-washed so they don’t shed any dye when new and can be more comfortable. If you want longer lasting jeans, you’ll have to look into selvedge denim which are made with higher quality fabrica but they may shrink a lot during the first few washed and may take some time to break in, they may feel a bit rough at the beginning. Levi’s has a selvedge line and other branda like Uniqlo has a budget selvedge jeans. There are many other brands. You can also find other modern jeans that are not selvedge and high quality but I do not know which ones.

I noticed that repeatedly, whenever I bought a new Levi's (always a 501 in my case) and for more than a decade now... the contrast is astonishing if you're, e.g., putting a 'nearly new' 1990s 501 next to a recent one, which bears noticeably less weight, has a coarser, thinner fabric. Case solved probably, if you read the 'made in' on the tag. *: I usually prefer to pick up second-hand/near-mint vintage jeans at a local shop even if prices are increasing there, also. Quality is indeed an important point with this.

The thing about Levi's is that they are one of the if not the biggest mens workwear brands in terms of market segmentation. You can buy a really terrible pair of 505s for $40, a decent pair for $100, a selvedge pair for $130 or a japanese denim pair for $250, this is all visible on their [website at any time](https://www.levi.com/US/en_US/clothing/men/jeans/straight/c/levi_clothing_men_jeans_straight/facets/feature-fit_name/505%e2%84%a2), but there is probably even more segmentation they're doing in terms of outlets and stuff that gets even cheaper and worse made that isn't visible directly on the website. IMO if they want to retain their brand value there should be a stronger notion of what the 'standard' brand spec 505 is that people should be evaluating, but it's also sort of strange to me that people buy a $40 pair of jeans and think they are going to be high quality just because they're Levi's, when Levi's is explicitly selling them to you as the cheapest, most fast fashion, worst version of the 505 design they could pay someone else to produce.

Gotta buy classic 501 straight cuts or their selvedge line now. It's not just Levi's to be fair. Anything with elastane is not going to last you a lifetime. To be honest thought, UNIQLO has some really great quality jeans. They really swing above their weight for the price. Bought a couple pairs last year that I wear very often and I'm impressed at how they've worn and held up since then.

This won't help with stretch, but Levi's makes linen blend jeans. I got some 555s and they're super breathable. If you're having issues keeping them up, check out suspenders that are meant to be worn under your shirt. If you're not planning on tucking your shirt in, they're fantastic.

Which moment made you switch to the "buy it for life" mindset?
A wardrobe full of somewhat deteriorated/damaged clothes, tiny holes in seams or on visible panels, socks with worn out heels and toe holes, always annoying, but never enough to just trash it. I made an inventory on stuff I bought in the past that still remained in good state, so far I opt for Uniqlo Airsm short sleeve oversized t-shirts, they feel more synthetic than organic stuff, but after three years look as good as new besides the neck imprint being washed out (plus they dry over night when traveling). Socks were a surprise find, the Quechua Sock Hike 100 High from Decathlon have lasted as well multiple years on me now. I have one pair of airism boxers with a buttoned front, don't ask me about the exact classification, not skin tight, but very thin and smooth in material. Uniqlo doesn't stock them in this style anymore, and I'm open for alternatives. Pants are usually Levis 501, I can easily buy them blind as I know the model size that fits well, but they usually wear out around the center seam between the leg pieces after two years. I still have other clothes of course, but by putting more rotations on the proven items, I can reduce overall wear on what I need only occasionally.

I noticed 20+ years ago Levi starting to use nylon/spandex/plastic in their jeans when they broke within the first year (mostly in the same place as yours). I miss their 567s. 501s but boot cut. And 100% cotton. I still wear their 501s that are 100% cotton and I have some that are 15 years old. Well worn but still solid. But 501s have become my "going out" pants when it's casual. Today my work pants are Duluth. The 100% cotton ones. Their cotton blends break just like Levi's poly blends - that break just like Carhartt polys, etc. I'm rough on my cloths as my work is rough - if you're looking for more "designer" denim, Japan makes some quality shit. And a few American brands are about on par with them. But I can't bring myself to spend over $80 on work pants. Duluth is my go-to right now as it's decent quality and they really do live up to their warranty.

Best Workwear Brand?
Levi's 505s I buy 2 pairs a year at about $30. They have definitely gone down in quality over the years and they are hot in the summer but I don't think there is a pair of pants out there that would last me a year for $60. I also like that they dont look like work clothing.

I have three active boys, and they're the only pants that survive to be handed down -- heck, the only pants that survive. My eldest blew through the knees of three pairs of (ironically) Levis in a week, so it's not like they're gentle on clothes.

I still buy 512s all the time and run them into the ground. If you want better Levi’s they make more serious denim (that costs alot more), that’s made on Japanese looms (read: old Levi’s looms). It lasts forever but it comes at a cost.

I had the same thing happen with Levi. I bought the same pair a year later and I think the waste was larger but the crotch was shorter. I still wore them but they weren't as comfortable as the first pair. Got a third pair and it was different from the first two and gave up on the brand. Once I found a new pair which fits from a new brand I quickly bought four more pairs and they actually fit the same, so either I got the same batch or it's just better stuff.

High Quality Jeans under $150?
\+1 for Unbranded (great entry point into raw selvedge) but you might want to stick with 100% cotton 501's and see if sizing might be the issue. If jeans are too tight they tend to wear out at high-friction areas like the crotch and thighs so maybe size up and see if that's any better. I think a bit of a baggier fit is more comfortable as well.

It doesn’t matter if OP has personally tested those 10 specific pair of jeans. Tens of millions of pair have already been put to the test over the past many decades and have been proven as BIFL. This is the only brand jeans I’ve worn since the 1970s. I don’t think I’ve ever had a pair last less than 10 years, and the oldest pair I have in my closet right now is probably 25 years.

Not a dumb question at all! There are the decent quality Levi’s in stores like Tysons Corner (my store hehe). You’ll find decent quality Levi’s in Nordstrom, Macys, and other big retailers. You’ll also find outlet ones. Just look for the leather patch. If it’s flat and feels like paper then it’s an outlet pair.

I love Levi’s 501s. Make sure they’re 100% cotton (no stretch) and if you can afford it I’d recommend the premium line. If you want to go up another tier, try looking at raw selvedge pairs. I love my True Guy fit from Naked and Famous. If you want raw selvedge for a bit cheaper, Unbranded is another great brand I wear.

501s are a classic, but the quality of the 501 hasn’t been good for a very long time. Expect what you pay for. They will wear out faster than a pair from 50 years ago. That said, everyone should have at least one pair of 501s. I have one in black too. Such a classic cut.

I moved to 502s because I like the taper and the 1% stretch isn’t too bad. I bought a size smaller and while they’re a little snug right after a wash they fit awesome after an hour or so. Just make sure you get the premium line with the leather patch. More expensive but the quality is far better.

Oh, goodie, here comes my random knowledge of Levi's because I worked as a General Manager for several years. Those jeans are \*always\* on a $49.99 sale in outlet stores. The jeans you're looking at are outlet jeans so...I wouldn't say they're really worth much. The Levi's that the general public can buy easily in a brick-and-mortar store are usually terrible quality. Things rip at the crotch or the back pockets or the belt loops all the time. These are just "called" 501s. The real ones are 100% cotton. The elastane in this pair will make them comfy but will also make them kinda unwearable after 2 or 3 wears because it'll just stretch out and need to be shrunk via washer again. If you're looking for \*good quality\* Levi's then you'd be paying $$$. They rarely, if ever, put their actual good stuff on a good enough sale. Someone commented on shrink-to-fit 501s and that's as close as you'll get to the original Levi's people used to rave about. The process to getting them to fit is a bit annoying, however. If you decide to go that route then size up 1 for waist, and 2 for length. Once purchased go fill your bathtub with lukewarm water, sit in it with pants on until they're completely drenched (you're gonna see a lot of dye in the pants fade into the water - 99% of Levi's jeans in store come pre-washed now). Drain your tub, go sit outside or somewhere with the wet pants still on until they completely dry. Once they dry you have pants that fit you. It's such a gamble, though. Anyways, walk into an Outlet store. They'll have a sale like "2 for $49.99" or something (which is something that happened often at Outlet stores) so you can get more bang for your buck.

I'd agree. Something doesn't need to last forever if it's cheap enough. Sometimes you can buy something for the life of the product and still be plenty happy. A pair of levis will still last years and they're cheap enough, it's not a big deal to replace them. You could certainly find some bespoke jeans maker with denim as thick as cardboard but it would cost you 10-20x as much as a pair of levis.

I've ordered some of the 100% cotton 501's within the last 2-3 years and they've felt great and performed well at work. The ones you linked appear to not be the 100% cotton ones, which my wife bought me one time and they do seem more comfy for everyday wear but certainly don't feel as well made as workwear. For $40 though, eh not too bad a deal at all.

You won't find the answers here. When it comes to jeans redditors are usually like "yo, you only want to spend 150 euro for jeans??? You can only buy some entry level jeans and no guarantee they last more than a few months. Go with 500 euro Japanese jeans". For real tho - Levis and Carhartt have treated me well so far. Levis have tons of different models tho - some are good, some are on the level of Zara and Bershka. One pair that was surprisingly good was Uniqlo's 100% cotton jeans. Not amazing but for the price they lasted plenty of time and always looked good.

Go with the original Levi's 501 shrink-to-fit, but beware! Since all their manufacturing has moved outside the US, things aren't quite as great. Most notably, they have issues that manage to make it past QC and out into the wild. So, when you get 'em (or when you buy 'em retail or the like), inspect the sh\*t out of 'em, 'cause their QC isn't doing a good job on that anymore. But if all went fine on the manufacturing, then you're good. Yeah, here's some of the sh\*t I've seen that has made it past their QC since they've gone to 100% non-US manufacturing/assembly ... fortunately all of which can be easily caught with a good close careful inspection (which Levi's ought be doing themselves, but can no longer be counted on for that): * missing belt loop(s) * mis-sewn seams (carefully check all, inside and out, and that both rows of sewing landed properly on the fabric bits, and all the relevant fabric edges properly tucked, etc.) * errors on rivets and riveted buttons (make sure they're all on full and squarely and properly riveted, no partials or edges sticking out where they shouldn't be, none missing or popped off, etc.) * though I've not run into it, I'd strongly suggest good thorough inspection for anything else one could find, e.g. make sure all the pocket are there and properly swen, proper symmetry, size, sewn on labels, fabric consistency, etc. But once well made though a proper QC (one's own, not Levi's QC, which has gone to sh\*t), then you're golden. And if it doesn't pass, just exchange or return (done that many times now, I typically find errors on about 17% of their shipped product).

Get denim that is all cotton. The stretch that youre talking about is 2-5% elastine added to the fibers. Also, find your price point. You can spend $50 of $500 on a pair of jeans. As for brands, below is a small list: Levis, Wrangler, Lee, Naked and Famous, Ciano Farmer, Momotaro, Oni, Kapital etc.

Problems with Levis Jeans and denim overall
Levi’s can be difficult because most everything tends to be low rise and slim. There are a few exceptions but they tend to come from the premium line. I’ve had decent experience with the 568. Carpenter jeans will also have a silhouette resistant to crotch blowouts. Roundhouse is the best I can think of.

I'm a lover of casual dresses. I find a few I like and buy them in multiple colors. Pair with a light sweater or denim jacket and nice sandals or sneakers. I shop the Old Navy, Gap & Banana Republic sales for dresses and matching cardigans. And make sure the jackets are well fitted. Levis & Tommy Hilfiger are my go to's for jackets. Levi’s premium has been out for well over a decade and a huge jump up from the lower tier in quality. The 100% cotton is much stiffer, but lasts far longer. Once you know your waist and inseam sizes, go online when they’re running a promotion and you can apply it to premium items that are already on sale. You can often get a $120 pair of jeans for $30-$50 that way.

I am a sustainability educator and finding things that last are a bit part of that. I’ve done quite a bit of research on possible options. Some of these I have (*) while others have been HIGHLY recommended to me. I would still check out the brand as some people who have had their (insert brand name item that they got 15 years ago here) have said that quality has diminished in recent years and won’t last as long. My European friends always told me Levi’s jeans are cheaper in the States, if you’re into that. I think a lot of name brands, like Nike, etc can be cheaper here. I’d look for an outlet mall and go check out what they have. Not buy it for life things, unfortunately.

Vintage shopping. Go to the thrift stores and try out some classic Levi’s. Also pawn shops. Also think about small companies that you wanted to buy things from but the export fee was so high you didn’t buy it. Backpacks, clothing, etc. it’s the smaller companies that make quality and it’s perfect to order while you’re in America.

Wash your fucking pants. Not washing your jeans for months of wearing is gross. This is a pair of Levi’s. Put them in the washing machine with soap and other blue stuff. If you are scared to shrink them, lay them out to dry. If you are reasonable, put them in the dryer. Wear them while you do work. Get them dirty because they are fucking work pants.

Same. Wear as long as you can tolerate. Wash inside out on cold with less detergent than you think. The first few times I wash Selvedge I choose to handwashing in a tub with something like dr bronners and rinse cold, then hang dry. My selvedge jeans have held up for a decade this way with minimal repairs.

Assuming they are regular denim and not a pair of selvedge, the correct way to launder jeans is inside out in cold water, hang to dry. If it’s your first time washing them, it may be/likely is wise to wash them on their own vs mixed in with other laundry

Bonobos. Whatever their most relaxed fit model is called. They significantly more room in the thighs than anything else I've found. The second best was Levis 541, but Bonobos is way better and I only wear those now.

All my shoes/sneakers are either Flexi, Vans, Charlie and/or Levi's, and they have hold up pretty good, I've had Vans for 2+ years, Charlie shoes 1-2 years for gym use, Flexi and Levi's boots hold up pretty good, I once had a Levi's boots for almost 5 years of almost daily use until the soles started to wear off, only the soles, the body of the boot was still in pretty good condition

The answer is… sometimes. I think the whole BIFL philosophy is environmentally friendly. The longer something lasts, the less waste there is. In certain cases the environmental impact might be slightly higher than eco-friendly products. But, if they last longer and you only have to buy one (rather than ten) your overall impact is less. Eco friendly doesn’t always have to mean more expensive. I buy line caught tuna rather than net caught, it costs more. I make my own cleaning products which is actually cheaper. I eat free range eggs rather than cage eggs, which costs more. I buy Levi’s jeans from charity shops because it costs less and I get years of use out of them.

I just went through this same issue. 100% cotton seems to be the pick. I switched to all cotton 505’s and wrangler 47mwz’s. It is a switch going to a straight leg from a slim but I do feel more comfortable overall. The cotton feels better. We’ll see how long these all last.

Go to Levi’s store or thrift them (beware of knockoffs). They can easily be bought from under $80 new and used. Make sure they are 100% denim … your booty will thank you. And when you find what you love - stop looking :) I have worn 90% Levi’s for 15 years and never found anything better.

My Levi's from 20 years ago are starting to rip where the back pocket gets sewn in. I bought a couple new pairs and the material is way different and sizing is much larger. I'm sad I didn't try it on before removing the tags and putting it through the wash.

It's at least 20 years for Levi's, the last mainline made in USA stuff was in the late 90s-early 00s. Even some of the made in Mexico stuff from that era is great, but with the Y2K fast fashion blitz they completely tanked in quality.

Yes it is true- quality clothes are harder to find.
Levi's has a whole line of 100% cotton jeans. People don't buy them as much because, even though stretchy/composite jeans don't last as long, they fit great from the first time you put them on to after you gain 10 lbs.

I had this same problem, I thought maybe the issue was the spandex in nearly all of their denim so I switched to 100% cotton 501’s— I’m not a big guy and I tore the crotch within 6 months squatting down at work. I decided then only selvedge denim from here on out. Levi’s fabric quality just sucks now though I can’t speak for their upper tier jeans. I started with a couple pairs of brave stars, which are great for getting familiar with raw denim and good value for money. Not my favorite pair but a solid step up from Levi’s. They are surprisingly still wearable 4 years on, though pretty worn in after daily wearing to work. I did need one of my pairs patched after 2.5 years, but I actually wanted to keep them going because they got so much more comfortable over time and proved their overall quality.

Office Friendly Big/Tall Pants?
I recently moved up a size in my waist and went with a pair of 505s that have no stretch. After breaking in they’re more comfortable and I find them more sturdy as well. They also seem to breathe better and the butt isn’t sagging nearly as much.

I have a Levi’s leather belt too. I was surprised that they even had a full grain belt with no design, it’s literally a strip of unfinished leather with a buckle and some holes but it’s served me very well and I expect it to last me many more years.

There's a lot of good suggestions here. Just going to throw Levi's into the mix. They're reasonably priced and very well made. If you aren't using it as a utility belt, and it's just to hold your pants up, it will last a lifetime. Lots of the other suggestions here are very heavy duty and oriented around utility.

I know I’m late to this, but seriously what are y’all doing to your jeans? I’ve never had a button come off of any of mine or holes in the pockets. Even my $10 no boundaries Walmart work jeans I’ve had for years. That being said, the quality of Levi’s is very good imho. The comfort and durability of them are felt as soon as you put them on. They fit like a glove unlike Walmart jeans which are actually kind of uncomfortable to wear. Levi’s has sales all the time that make them quite affordable so I’d just buy them then and see what you think. Also, you’re not supposed to wash jeans unless they get dirty and/or start to smell. Levi says this directly on their own website. Hope this helps.
