  Looking for a winter coat

  Are you really suggesting that someone wear a wool base layer for basically every single day from mid-November to mid-March? They'd be much better off with a down jacket with a waterproof shell (like the LL Bean Rugged Ridge Parka, for example) because then they can also wear that around to run errands and stuff.

  What winter gear do you recommend?

  I'm a big fan of Ororo heated vests or scarves. You recharge a battery pack, and it has 3 levels of warmth. I put it under my jackets in the coldest winters, and as a vest itself in the cooler Spring and Fall months. The winter jackets I like are LL Bean --they have a warm, warmer and warmest rating level and they provide great quality and value for money. This combo has served me well. Good luck!

  Need help looking for 2 types of coats; A down, and a wool

  LL Bean has a down jacket that’s long. I have their ultra light down sweater and their ultra light down jacket and I have been very happy with both of them. I know that L.L. Bean gets shit on because a lot of their products have gone down in quality. and that’s a fair point. But their ultra light down jackets are fantastic and very warm. You should learn about layering. A single garment typically can’t do it all. You will be much warmer with moisture wicking base layers underneath your coat or jacket.

  Anything worth getting at LL Bean?

  I have a really old rugby robe that I still wear. Between me and my girlfriend, it gets daily use. Still in fantastic condition after 10+ years. Idk what the requirements for "BIFL" are on clothing, but I feel like getting 10-20 years out of a $100 robe should qualify. I'm pissed they discontinued it. I hate robes and have never found another robe I've deemed worthy of wearing.

  Need help looking for 2 types of coats; A down, and a wool

  Cold weather coats are mostly a minefield of marketing, so you have to look at the guts of the thing. For down, the big problems are weak fill and cheap fabric. A long coat that actually keeps you warm needs something in the 700 fill range or better so it insulates without turning you into a walking trash bag. Box baffle construction matters because sewn through seams leak heat once you're below about ten degrees. The outer fabric should be around 30 to 40 denier nylon so it does not tear the first time it meets a door frame. LL Bean's Ultralight 850 Long is one of the few options in your price range that gets most of this right. For wool, the only thing that really matters is density. You want something around 80 to 90 percent wool, and ideally melton or boiled wool so the wind does not cut straight through it. The lining should be Bemberg or a decent polyester satin. Acetate is the sticky stuff that feels fine in a changing room and awful in real use. Make sure the shoulders have taped seams so the coat does not sag after a season. J.Crew's Ludlow topcoat, when they put it on sale, usually meets those specs. The big trap is the so called wool blend coats that are closer to plastic than wool. Anything with more than forty percent polyester will feel warm under store lights and leave you freezing outside.

  Best winter jackets that are worth the price

  For me it’s the LL Bean Maine Mountain Parka. I’ve had it for 4 years and it’s still in perfect condition. It is INCREDIBLY warm. The outer fabric is closer to what feels like canvas. A lot of puffy coats have the thin smooth fabric that can tear easily. This coat is very durable and well made. The hardware feels substantial.   LL Bean Bucksport as a budget Iron Ranger?

  Overall fairly well, though I don't wear them too often and mostly for light duty. I replaced the insoles with some plain leather ones, which vastly improved the comfort. The soles are fairly soft, so are wearing down faster than I would have hoped. The leather hasn't aged as much as I had hoped, but looks fairly close to when I bought them. I think they were a good value, but I wish I'd spent more to get a shoe that was a little more versatile.

  I’m looking for a sweater that will last me a long time & is very comfortable - an investment (:

  This has been my fixation for the past couple of years. Recs for women/anyone looking for a slightly more feminine look below. I also have a bias towards natural fibers which is a little irrational. Buying new: - Expensive but good quality and on trend: babaa wool sweaters. Oversized chunky knits from Spain, more fashion forward in the sense that their sleeves trend towards bat wing. They have sales throughout the year at regular times, always 25% off. Mid 300 euro range. Softens as you wear it. I bought one last year and wore it several times a week, it’s among my favorite purchases ever. - Aran knit sweater- classic Irish wool sweaters. Unfortunately I find that a lot of these have trended towards merino blends (which is not what I want in a durable chunky sweater, give me some heavy regular wool!). But it’s always well priced and excellent quality. - LL Bean’s cotton sweaters are a favorite Buying vintage: - expensive option: you can find vintage Loro Piana in the 300-400$ range on eBay, among the highest quality cashmere available! Definitely not indescrructible but timeless and will last a lifetime with care. - Pendleton wool sweaters are dirt cheap on resale, always at my Goodwill and shopgoodwill.com, and high quality. I do find them scratchier than my other wool sweaters. - Ralph Lauren and Pringle of Scotland are brands I’ve had luck with in the vintage category

  I love the LL Bean roll neck sweaters, have had two for years and they are in near new condition. Same with Taylor Stitch Crawford Sweaters. I’ve worn two of those almost daily the past three winters and they’re in great shape.

  Which Full-Zip Hoodie(s) Would You Recommend For Under $110?

  Lots of recommendations for American Giant. I got a couple of their heavy zips last year, they seem nice but for some reason the navy blue one is much stiffer. Think of a rugby shirt that was air dried on a clothesline. Very stiff. The light blue one is the same construction but much softer. They recently went up substantially on their price and without the 20% discount I don’t think their worth it over an LL Bean heavy model or the Carhartt rain defender (unless the made in USA is important).

  Good quality boots that will last me a decade?

  I used to swear by Sorel, but I think they have declined in quality. Now I think I'd go with LL Bean Duck Boots, and a few pairs of thick Darn Tough socks, unless I was living in a place that was very cold, in which case I'd go for the Sorels. As others have said, buying 2 pairs of boots and swapping between them will make each pair of boots last more than twice as long, because the boots will dry out on the off days. If you have only one pair of boots, they will go a whole season without ever drying out, which shortens their lifespan.

  What's a purchase under $50 that has genuinely improved your daily routine?

  An LL Bean Boat and Tote. It drastically reduces trips carrying items from anywhere to anywhere. Groceries, tools, laundry, going anywhere for a picnic, taking contanters for a potluck, the beach... I thought the gift was "wow thanks for the nice bag..." but after a week I figured you can use it for *everything.*

  Men's rain jacket that's actually waterproof

  I wear a rain jacket from Duluth Trading Company and every year I re-waterproof it with a spray. Works great. I’m out watching travel soccer in “all the weather” and between that jacket and my LL Bean All Weather pants (also sprayed) I don’t get wet.

  Duffle Bag Recommendation

  I have maxpedition duffels and LL Bean roller duffel (for flying). Both are solid. I use maxpedition for backpacks, pocket organizers, travel tray and even toiletry bag (currently with me on a trip). LL Bean is also a good choice for plain bag. As I mentioned it's my travel bag (on airplanes). Little dirty but not ripped or anything. Protects pretty well for duffel. Ive had kcups and bags of chips in it without getting destroyed.

I’ve been in -20F temps with a wool base layer, this sweater and an uninsulated hard shell as my top and been completely comfortable. Only wash in cold water and air dry.   Is L.L. Bean a quality clothing brand?

  I love my LL Bean stuff from shoes to coats. Patagonia is great but VERY pricey. I'm guessing it's all about your focus- if you are going to climb a 14er and really NEED expedition  wear---or wear it on a daily commute in the city. Only you know what your needs are- but for me, I'm always happy with Bean! And winters are VERY cold and windy here in Wyoming! I LOVE my 850 Ultralight coats even on the coldest days! Bean holds up very well.

  Patagonia Nano Puff has a drawcord in the hem. LL Bean's Primaloft packaway jacket has it. I think you are better off searching for hiking or outdoor vendors for the style of jacket you are looking for. You'll find more with cinch cords rather than spending hours going thru Nike's catalog.

Negative reviews for this particular coat are along the lines of - but it isn't small enough at the waist. If it fits close to my waist, how can I layer?

  Cotton, Linen, Wool clothing recommendations?

  I love my LL Bean Chamois flannel. Few years in and doing great. I do not tumble dry it. I also like that they offer traditional and slightly fitted option on a lot of their pieces, and I don’t fall in between their medium and large like I do most brands.
