Why did we accept that security cameras need monthly fees to work properly?
Eufy, Reolink, Dahua, Lorex, Hikvision, Vivotek, Amcrest, basically anything that either has a NVR or takes microSD cards. It'd be shorter to list which cameras are cloud-only because there's not many. The main reason people buy them is because they're significantly cheaper exactly, and they're significantly cheaper because the companies rely on cloud storage subscriptions to make up the cost.

Uh, idk. Mine from Costco has local storage on a chip inside the camera. It goes directly to my phone where I can screen record parts of it. I have to wipe it like once a year. I think it’s called Lorex.

We have LOREX. Outdated, and definitely more commercial-oriented, but it has a local storage hub that communicates over WiFi to our two cams. The cams do have to plug into power, but the quality is good, the app is easy enough to use and view, and we can update cams when we can afford to and should be relatively plug and play.

Came here to say this. I have 3 separate Lorex systems plus a doorbell and the Smart Security Center on my desk. I have a variety of wired and wireless cameras. They save video automatically for three days which has pretty much always been enough storage for me, with zero subscription fees. And all of the different dvr’s are accessible in a single app. Never had to get any help with installation or networking.

I use Lorex, I have a local hard drive for storage and remote access as long as the hard drive is hooked up to my home wifi. No monthly fees and the cameras have been running steady for a little over 2 years now.

I have Tapo security cameras at my house that record locally to Micro SD cards. I have a Lorex camera system at my office that records locally to a DVR. Neither one requires a subscription.

Talk about BIFL, we installed a Lorex 8 camera kit from Amazon in 2016. Video quality is still excellent, about 26 days of storage the way we have it configured, can monitor live from anywhere in the world, and we've never paid for anything other than hardware costs. Probably paid $600-700 back then.

Why did we accept that security cameras need monthly fees to work properly?
Reolink or Lorex for medium budget. Ubiquiti for a larger budget but the best option in my opinion. I refuse to buy cameras that force a subscription. Lorex\\Reolink offer cloud storage but it's not necessary. I see others recommending Eufy but personally I would not trust their security. However, Lorex\\Reolink's parent company is Dahua so it depends on your personal need for security.
