  Full grain leather laptop bag recommendations?

  Hardware is usually the first thing to give you trouble, so solid brass or stainless is worth watching for or you end up with a buckle that snaps while everything else is fine. Full grain bags are getting harder to find because so many companies shave their hides down and hope nobody notices... the leather is what usually fades fastest and if it is not proper full grain veg tan in a thicker cut it starts to crease, crack, and go floppy while chrome tan looks good at first then just gives up. And about stiching, hand saddle work lasts, but machine lock stitching can unravel the moment a single thread goes, some pricey brands still take that shortcut even when they really should not Internal structure counts as well, real leather or HDPE stiffeners keep their shape while cardboard inserts just turn to a sort of oatmeal after a couple of humid summers If you want examples, the Colonel Littleton 1943 feels like an old tool bag and Lotuff's working tote with a strap is still put together with proper materials.

  OP set it under $1,000, so I’d target full-grain leather, solid brass or steel hardware, a zip top, and a brand that will repair handles and zips. Ask for leather thickness (aim around 1.8–2.2 mm), strap anchor reinforcement, YKK or RiRi zips, and bag weight under \~2 lb so it is comfortable loaded. Frank Clegg for structured work totes and Demellier for travel, but Latico Leathers is what I grab when I need softer full-grain with hidden pockets to keep chargers and keys from scratching a phone. Also check Ghurka on the secondary market, and Lotuff if she wants US-made. Bottom line: under $1k, buy full-grain, zip-top, reinforced straps, and repair support.

  Frank Clegg and Lotuff make excellent pieces which I’ve bought for my wife and look new almost a decade later. They need to be cared for if you want the finishing to remain in tact but the leather and stitching are very high quality.

  Frank Clegg, Lotuff, and Lindquist Object - All of these brands make their bags in the US from very high-quality leather. They're also true leather workers, meaning they have the skills to finish their bags in a refined way. These bags will last her decades.

  Portland Leather purses: Do they lose their shape over time? I’m between a Dooney and a Portland leather and can’t decide. But I hate when a purse doesn’t have good internal structure and loses its lines over time.

  Lining helps with structure and shape. I personally do not love unlined bags, especially large ones. I don’t mind in a smaller bag. And I have another one I use for travel that is easy to pack. But overall not really. Lots of people in r/handbags have Portland ones so ask there. I have never bought one because they are largely simple construction bags with limited finishing and that is not really my style. If you want a US made bag with more finishing, try Lotuff. I have a really nicely made bag from them.

  BIFL - Best products from the USA

  I love bags, and there are many high-quality small bag makers out there who are making their products entirely in the US. Many even use US leather or canvas, although some are using imported leather. Here are some I've purchased from or heard great things about: Rough & Tumble Satchel Savannah Go Forth Goods Juliette Rose Designs Frost River Lindquist Object Frank Clegg Lotuff Hemlock & Hyde North End Bag Company KMM Coastal Hillbilly Range Leather I know there are more, but I'm drawing a blank at the moment. If anyone has suggestions for bags that are made in the US, please share.
