Looking for purse recommendations!
I have 20yo vintage Coach and Burberry that look as good as the day I bought them. I have Fossil and Lonchamp that have just surpassed the 10yr mark and both have held up incredibly well. Louis Vuitton leather, not canvas, just celebrated 5yo.

Ferragamo leather wallet - every single day in my pocket since 2008
I have an LV from 2006. My father used it for the first 15 years and I keep enjoying it daily for the past 5 years. Still looks new.

Help! It’s my husband’s 50th birthday on Monday. What is a good quality BIFL wallet?
My 8 year old Louis Vuitton wallet looks brand new. I doubt it will ever need to be replaced.

Louis Vuitton for the road and skies.
Now here's a question: Do you mean LV's actual leather goods, or only the ones that have the large monogram print that someone who doesn't know about fashion would read as LV? I'm a not a logo/monogram person, so I don't have a dog in the LV monogram fight. My trio of Vuitton St Jacques bags from the 90s (with just a single debossed LV mark in a corner, so unclockable as unless someone had a deeeep knowledge of the house) are still going strong. A bag that lasts 30+ years of pretty regular abuse is pretty much the definition of BIFL. So by that metric, Louis Vuitton leather goods (assuming they're still made with the same quality, which idk) should absolutely be welcome as BIFL. So I guess the question is, is it an actual Vuitton item that's the problem, or does the dismissiveness come transferred feelings a person might have about a group of people who aspire to buy Vuitton and be SEEN as buying Vuitton?

Louis Vuitton for the road and skies.
Monogram print is not my taste and I don't know how the quality is now, but 3 out of my 4 daily driver handbags are Vuittons that are each over 30 years old.The epi isn't as bulletproof as Hermès is for leather, but not nearly as heavy, either. I'm pretty rough on my bags, but I take them to the spa once a year to get repaired/restored and there's no reason they won't outlive me.

A list of BIFL not made in the USA
Knives (and tools): Victorinox, Opinel Socks (as BIFL as socks can be): Falke, Monnet Many real luxury goods (many of those products count as BIFL) are made in Europe: Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Armani, etc.

Recommendations for Designer Backpack
No you're right, mfs really said "This is not the place for "designer"", if that isn't gatekeeping I don't now what is. They outright claim "BIFL is understated, quality and no brand names", as if it can't be anything more or anything less. It doesn't matter if they write "most" in one sentence out of four - this sub loves to gatekeeper. Coach has excellent leather for the price - vintage examples still look lovely years later, great hardware, good construction, designs aren't anything special. They aren't designer, but easily the best value. Loewe, Longchamp, & Bottega vintage examples can be very good, but you have to search around. Their modern bags aren't bad at all either, just extremely expensive for what you get and middling design. Same with Celine, Dior, Chloe, Bulgari, they all have had some good pieces over the years, but you need to do your research as to which leather which bags use and the construction of said bag, I would never buy those brands retail. Quality on a lot of these went down post LVMH buyout, so you really have to do your research and if possible learn to feel the leather be able to differentiate between good leathers and cheap leathers coated in plastics and whatnot. People here conflate quality with value. LV bags are horrible value retail. But to say a neverful empreinte bag isn't a BIFL purchase and low quality just because its designer would be lying - you can get significantly better leather from local artisans for the same money no doubt, but treat it well and it will last you a lifetime. Hermes is probably the biggest example of this, insane margins, insane markups, but the crafstmanship is there no doubt. As long as you are well aware you are paying in majority part for the high margins, logo, designer label, design, and marketing, and that the bag only really takes 1/10th of the MSRP to construct, its a fine purchase. I've been using a hermes double-tour watch strap for the better part of a decade now, and my has a vintage herbag, and they have both aged wonderfully.
