  Old Lucchese is good quality. New Lucchese? Absolute garbage QC and craftsmanship in my experience. Refunds take months to post, warranty and corporate customer service is impossible to use, and everything has to be dealt directly with the local shop to get anything done. They have good salesmen, designers and history but it’s clearly not the brand everyone still thinks it is. Kind of like people blindly recommending Toyota nowadays still for BoF trucks and SUVs. Their biggest saving grace is their in person stores (at least the Nashville location) have pretty helpful employees. Just unfortunate that I had to run back to them every time to fix my issues and couldn’t get them resolved without their help.

  I've worn my Tecovas multiple days a week for over a year now and love them. Is there any real reason why you don't think they're good? This is gonna sound crazy but I actually find them more comfortable than my Luccheses.

  I’m going on 12 years on a pair of almost daily wear Double H’s ropers, Goodyear welt, been resoled once. Also have a pair of dressier Lucchese goat skin snip toe boots that only get worn a few times a month that are 15 years old. I rub mink oil into the double H’s twice a year, maybe every other year on the Lucchese’s.

  Soles fail long before the leather, and that’s what you’re seeing. Cemented soles peel, and there’s no saving them once the glue gets tired. If you actually want boots that can be rebuilt, you need a stitched welt. Goodyear welts, double welts, anything where a cobbler can put new bottoms on without the whole thing coming apart. Stick with full grain cowhide for daily wear. The pretty corrected stuff is just sanded and coated, and it shows its age fast. Leather linings matter more than people think. Fabric linings turn into grit traps, then the inside of the boot chews itself apart. For exotics, ostrich is the only one that holds up to actual walking. Caiman looks great until the scale joints start cracking, which they always do. Tecovas and Lucchese both have their decent lines, but avoid anything sold mostly on how soft the insole feels on the store carpet. Thick foam midsoles feel nice for a month, then they pack out and the whole boot feels dead.

  Ariat's solid but for true BIFL check out Tecovas, Lucchese, or Anderson Bean. They'll last decades with resoles. For exotics ostrich is comfy and durable as hell. It's the sweet spot for casual wear that'll actually last.

  What’s your BIFL that a dog chewed on and you still use it?

  Lucchese ostrich skin boots. Looking down and seeing the clip tie on one chewed a bit makes me happy.
