  Lundhags Shell Boots, provided you hike. They're designed to last a lifetime AND they have evidence of ones that are decades old that they'll sometimes take back and put on display in Sweden. They can be infinitely rebuilt and Lundhags offers this service. They're more hiking boots, so you'll have to decide if they'll work for your application. Look at the Vandra II and the Forest II. I have both, plus a pair of Rangers that I had modified into a hybrid using the Jaure midsole and traction outsole. You treat them with Lundhags Fat or Wax. I do both depending on the conditions and where. Never had a leak.

  Clothing with some longevity

  For pants I would recommend Fjallraven or Lundhags. For jackets - Klattermusen or Fjallraven

  Durable walking boot recommendations?

  Choose a quality brand: Meindl, Hanwag, Lowa or Lundhags. Choose boots with a full leather upper, metal hardware and a resolable structure. Take care of the leather once in a while. That's a solid recipe right there!

  Jacket brands in Europe

  Brands are plentiful, manufacturing very rare. Lundhags and Sasta are based in Sweden and Finland, respectively, but most production is in the far east just like with Fjällräven. Pinewood is one of my favourites, can't remember if it's based in Denmark or Sweden. Sasta Peski clothes are made of Ventile cotton in Estonia. It's a cotton that swells when damp, giving it a touch of weatherproofness. Since there's no membrane, the key characteristic is in the fabric itself instead of a delicate layer the breaks easily. For "buy it for life", avoid anything with strech panels. They include elastane which is basically like a bunch of tiny rubber bands that will break much, much sooner than the main fabric.

  BIFL merino wool clothing?

  Value for money is subjective, so check the prices and you decide. But I have a few pieces from these brands, have used them for a few years and have not disappointed. Danish Endurance - socks IsoBaa - socks, t-shirts* and a hoodie Bølger - t-shirts* Decathlon (Forclaz brand) - long sleeved t-shirt* Icebreaker - full zip top Lundhags - full zip top * Relaxed fit, all others are slim or athletic fit. Decathlon and Bølger are a high wool (60%+) blend, with Decathlon probably being the best value for money. The socks are bends as well. The rest are 100% wool, IsoBaa being the nicest feel t-shirts, and Lundhags probably being the warmest for its weight. If you want them to last, never wash them with regular biological clothes detergent. The biological enzymes that are great for breaking down dirt, also break down wool proteins. And you end up with mystery holes. Only ever wash with soap. I just pick up cheap liquid soap for washing mine. It absolutely doesn't need to be a more expensive specialist wool specific product. Most of these are just liquid soap with a scent added, possibly a little lanolin.

  Has everything we buy reduced in quality over time? Has anything increased in quality or stayed high quality and durable?

  I don't understand everyone's great experience with Patagonia. Everything feels plastik-y and cheap. Granted they have a repair program but there are tons of brands that definitely feel higher in quality (fjallraven, lundbergs, ivanhoe, devold...)
