Daily driver laptop thats lasted 22 years.
If you Are going to upgrade anytime i would recommend macbooks, i have a 13 year old MacBook Pro that runs like new, even the battery is just as good as the day i bought it, i have went through 3-4 windows laptops in that time.

What product category has gotten worse in quality, even at the premium level?
I don’t care about repairability when the damn thing almost never breaks down. I still have a MacBook Pro from 10 years ago, I replaced the battery but other than that I’ve never had to fix anything, I’ve never even formatted the thing. Still works.

What product category has gotten worse in quality, even at the premium level?
I’ve had a couple of work thinkpads back then, and I’ve had MacBooks. I’d take a modern MacBook any day in the week. Thinkpads were (and I think still?) are great laptops. But here’s the thing: I don’t care about what’s swappable or upgradable. I want a laptop that’s light, with a battery that would last as long as possible, and that just works whenever I need it. MacBooks are lighter and their battery life is simply unbearable. And nothing running windows has ever “just worked”.

What laptop should I buy in 2025
For university I absolutely agree with a MacBook Air, a second hand or refurb one will be even better value. I thought I was productive onon Windows before (Windows + Arrow key) but Spotlight and the built in multi touch gestures (additional features can be unlocked in settings) with workspaces are just way better on MacOS (I don’t know if gestures are better in windows now because it’s just an spyware /adware OS now). Then you can super charge it with Raycast or Alfred (Raycast being my preference), Rectangle, Karabiner Elements etc. I’m so much faster at navigating around by Mac than Windows now with just shortcuts alone. Also student discount for MacBooks is a must! My best friend is still rocking my 2015 MacBook Pro, my wife my MacBook Air M1, and I’ve got the M3 Max MBP for work (still use Windows version of Excel via Parallel) and M4 Air for commute and travel. That said, my next laptop will likely be a framework as I don’t plan on upgrading my MacBooks in a while (I wanted my M3 to last me 10 years) and I want to play around with Linux, especially with Steam games becoming more available now thanks to the Steamdeck - I think that’s the only truly BIFL option.

A MacBook if you can afford it. For the battery life alone it’s worth it. You don’t need to upgrade frequently. I still run an old M2 and it’s solid. I like the air for portable over the pro. Otherwise framework or system76 make amazing repairable laptops. Any enterprise laptop with reasonable specs will also do. Pick them up second hand on eBay or similar site. Dont get a laptop to draw on. They all suck. Buy the cheapest Wacom you can and use that. Alternatively, see if you can use an iPad Pro instead of a laptop and go with that.

What purchase changed your habit?
I bought a MacBook. I know it’s a preference but I also feel like after I bought my first Mac, I stopped upgrading and upgrading my computer that has Windows every year or so. The laptop lasted me longer I’m not sure if it’s because I can’t afford another Mac right or they just last longer 🤷♀️. Anyway, ever since 20 years ago, I’ve always bought a Mac for my personal use. As for PCs, I still have them, I just don’t put Windows on them.

BIFL HS Grad gift for my daughter
When I went away to college I got a MacBook and luggage. I graduated over 15 years ago and I still have one of the pieces of luggage (two people gifted me luggage; only one person's gift was very high quality). I still use it as carry on luggage to this day. However, one thing that I wish I had gotten was classic jewelry. I have never been someone to wear jewelry but there were so many occasions that I wish I had something nice and always had to borrow or go out and buy something cheap and hope it didn't look cheap. A really nice set of earrings, a simple necklace, and a pearl necklace would have gone a long way. The pearl necklace was specifically part of a uniform for a choir I was in, but I spent the most money that I could afford on that one, and used it for any fancy occasion.

Best laptop for video editing in your opinion currently that can works well in long-term use?
MacBook Pros (especially the M4 Pro or M4 Max models) offer excellent performance, hardware-software integration, amazing battery life, and run Final Cut Pro or DaVinci Resolve like a dream. The mini-LED XDR display is also a huge win for color accuracy, and macOS tends to age more gracefully than Windows with fewer driver issues over time. If money isn’t a constraint, the 16-inch M4 Max MacBook Pro with at least 64GB of RAM and 2TB storage is a future-proof beast. Hope that helps!

Hot take - high school graduation is an artificially inflated accomplishment. Show up and you get a diploma. Great for selling balloons, flowers, cards, mugs, and jewelry... Is she going to college? If so, a MacBook + an iPad (with pencil) would be very much appreciated. Did that for my three - one out of college, and two still in. The iPad is indispensable for taking notes, recording lectures, and doing.homework (especially for majors like engineering - crazy how you can import a PDF, annotate, do complex math with graphing, etc.)

Which laptop should I buy in 2025?
Unsure if you are still looking for a laptop. Given that you don't play games and you want your laptop to last several years, i'd get the MacBook Air 15 with M4. It has a large display which is great for watching movies and MacBooks have better speakers than most Windows laptops. It is also very slim and portable for a 15inch laptop. I would ideally get the 24gb memory 1tb version listed here: [https://www.bestlaptop.deals/products/macbook-air-15-(m4)](https://www.bestlaptop.deals/products/macbook-air-15-(m4)) I would also buy Apple Care That will give you the most longevity. Plus you likely won't need to use external storage. If you can't afford that model just get the 16gb 512GB model. Please note, MacBooks frequently go on rotating sales. I have built a price tracker, which you can access using the link above. I also have listed my full pros and cons and a link to my YouTube review in that link to. I would NOT get the Framwork that others have suggested. Its very expensive, and not suited for your use case. Its screen is 13.5 inches and a 3 by 2 aspect ratio. Thats is going to be pretty bad for watching movies and consuming content vs the one I sent you. Its better suited for a software developer Josh

Le crueset dutch oven- I bought two (one medium and one large) second hand years ago and they're still perfect. if you get one with a plastic knob though, be careful! opt for the metal if you can. I have my grandma's cast iron skillet, also still perfect. it has a wooden handle which I don't see these days, it is a little worn but still totally functional. this thing has been cooked in daily for what 60 years? I don't know about "for life" but my 10 year old MacBook air is still like the day I bought it. I've used it for probably 10+ hours a day every day for 10 year.

> build a decent gaming PC You obviously have very VERY different needs than people who buy macbooks. Base model macbook air (M4) does not have any good competition from any other brand. Best battery life, performance and extremely lightweight, super rigid, high quality keyboard, way better trackpad hardware and its software integration... Forget matching the price. Urgent Need for New Laptop
I know it’s the most annoying thing to say of all time because they aren’t cost effective, but besides the planned obsolescence (iOS updates restricted and so browser updates restricted, meaning no more ability to watch videos as of a couple of months ago), my MacBook from 2011 is a little slow, but still kicking it and can handle most ‘average user’ things, besides videos. It doesn’t hold a charge for more than an hour or two, now, but I’ve also never replaced the battery or any other parts. If you like iOS and can hack it, price-wise, I just don’t know that any pc will last even half as long as

Definitely buy the new M4 air! You won’t regret it and the improvements over your current machine are totally worth it. I’d even say go ahead and get the 15inch version of the M4 Air, the extra screen real estate in such a thin and light package will be really great for productivity and it’ll last you a long time.

Macbook: Should I buy the M4 model?
The M# models are significant improvements over the Intel Macbooks. However, that doesn't mean you should jump to the latest model. I'd say the M2 is the Goldilocks. Diminishing returns really hit first with the M3, and the M4 got whacked in the face with the diminishing returns sledgehammer.

Where Does "Buy It for Life" Not Make Sense?
Technically true in that I can't really think of many electronics at all that will truly be "for life" but buying quality can absolutely make a big difference and save a lot of money by not having to replace it for a long long time. My Olympus digital camera I bought in 2014 is still running like a champ after hundreds of thousands of photos. Think I paid like $600 for it at the time. My Macbook is going on 12 years and my previous one made it to 14 before it just wasn't compatible with newer adobe software. My last Iphone was 12 years old and still going strong, I only upgraded because of that stupid forced 5g bullshit. If not for that, I would still be using that Iphone 5

What is the best laptop brand for long term use?
If your only concern is saving money over the long term then I would agree with the 600 other commenters as far as computer suggestions. But if you have other concerns such as not buying a disposable computer and trying to increase the life of just the one laptop then go with a custom built gaming laptop or pc. Find a custom pc builder near you and ask them for the lowest build that will meet your needs. Likely around $900-1000 for light gaming like COD, Fornite, Sims; even less money if you play like mystery/puzzles. Get as far as you can until it gets slow and then go back to the same pc builder for upgrades. It may cost only a little less than a new one, but you are still using the same laptop and not creating waste. To add to some of the comments I read about gaming laptops such as Alienware and MSI, these are incomparable to options like MacBooks and Thinkpads because you are able to change out components on gaming laptops. And while Apple has amazing repairs services they aren’t going to help your laptop keep up with technology. They will try to sell you a new one with trade in values.

What did you buy not realizing you bought it for life?
I have a revlon nail file that might be as old as me (mid 30s). Not truly BIFL but my 2011 macbook pro is still going strong. Veggie peeler that is absolutely older than me. Hand me down from my mom. My grandparents bought a sears sewing machine in the 60s. I now have it and it still works! I also have some of their old Pyrex but have since realized those have lead paint so.. now they just look pretty. I had yoga pants from victorias secret that were 20 years old. I just finally got rid of them this year because they don’t fit but still so much life in them.

Has everything we buy reduced in quality over time? Has anything increased in quality or stayed high quality and durable?
Kinda obvious but my MacBook Air with an M2 chip cost the same as my MacBook in 2008, and it’s a million times better

[Request] Consumer-Grade (not military spec) Laptop with the longest lasting hardware/hinges
Macbook Pro. I'm still using the one bought in June of 2010. It was my primary work machine until 2014 and still gets used every day. If you really want a Windows machine I would go with a Lenovo or maybe one of the business Dells. Something I discovered with my work issue Dell recently is that it's designed for water to be spilled on the keyboard. It has drain holes to let it run through. I accidentally tested this feature and haven't had any problems.
