  Cast iron pan by Lodge. It will outlive you, provided you maintain it properly. ($20) Vintage surplus wool army blanket (check eBay, you can get them for under $50). Mag-Lite flashlight. (Forget how much, definitely under $50). Zippo lighter ($25-$50).

  I still have a metal maglight flashlight kicking around from when I was a kid! Also a high quality big block eraser (I was very into art as a child and I still use the same one almost 30 years later).

  Some of my favorite BIFL EDC items.

  Leatherman ARC, Victorinox SAK Tinker (no scissors), Mag Light sometimes, Zippo Sometimes. Pen can be an old bic --have some over 40 years old. pencil stub (golf pencil), sometimes a tiny magnifying loupe which has a hard cover and dangles on my keychain

  Maglite is great if you need a weapon that can light up. Almost any modern $10 LED light will be better. I still have a 4D Maglite that I upgraded to LED, to keep in the truck, but my EDC that takes AAA batteries is brighter. I found r/flashlight and went down the rabbit hole.

  I mostly see coleman and maglite as good old car camping gear, reliable enough that I can pass gear onto a younger relative, so they can go on a trip. The problem for maglite is that many of us buy that specifically for very old features. As long as they aren’t marketing it as part of a new and advanced line, it doesn’t have to be either. A maglite should be enough to give a shy person the confidence to get up on a dark and rainy night, and shoo away a noisy animal that’s curious about the cooler. That gigantic shiny tube full of batteries is a desirable asset in this situation, as long as they make it sturdy and water tight.

  I am a sustainability educator and finding things that last are a bit part of that. I’ve done quite a bit of research on possible options. Some of these I have (*) while others have been HIGHLY recommended to me. I would still check out the brand as some people who have had their (insert brand name item that they got 15 years ago here) have said that quality has diminished in recent years and won’t last as long. Also if anyone has had bad experiences with any of these, please let me know!   Has everything we buy reduced in quality over time? Has anything increased in quality or stayed high quality and durable?

  I bought an LED kit for each of my Maglights and it has made a tremendous difference. Incredibly bright and my D cell has been using the same batteries for four years. Just in case you were gonna scrap an old police brutality edition.
