What BIFL products have bought you your time back?
A Martin Guitar, given to me as a Father's Day gift, 20 years ago. Has given me decades of joy. This year, I made a vow that if I saw a mention of a certain politician in the news, I would spend 15 minutes that day practicing, learning a new song, or picking up a new skill. It probably goes without saying that I've progressed a lot--and it was good for the soul.

1.) A Martin acoustic guitar. Old, used or new. They hold their value and get better with age. Buy once cry once 2.) Good pair of leather boots. Love my Thorogood Moc-Toes 3.) Craftsman tools. All the ones I have are hand me downs that are 20+ years old but work great. Pretty sure they could be swapped out if they get broken but haven’t had an issue after 10 years of abuse 4.) Japanese import cars. Loved my ‘00 Honda Civic that had 300k on the odometer before it got totaled in a wreck by a drunk driver 5.) Maybe controversial, but Beagles. Best dog breed I’ve ever had the pleasure to share life with. I’ve been converted to a lifelong beagle dad

Going back to before electricity
When I was a grad student in Nashville I was contemplating bringing something back with me (was considering art) to be a BIFL keepsake, not necessarily something with utility though. I ultimately decided to pool that money and spent $2k on a 1968 Martin acoustic guitar. Absolutely a BIFL item that needs no electricity and provides endless entertainment, not to mention something to hand down.

What’s one product you bought that has lasted forever and was totally worth it?
Martin Guitar from the 1950s. Conn Alto Sax from the 1930s. Both still amazing excellent instruments. Bought in my 20s. Now playing them 50 years later in my 70s. Also my Brian Wilkins steel road bicycle. Bought it 53 years ago and still ride it almost every day. Many of the parts have changed, but still the same bottom bracket, and a few other things.

Has everything we buy reduced in quality over time? Has anything increased in quality or stayed high quality and durable?
Guitars are better because of CNC. A lot of old farts are about to type a book-length post about their old Martin, Tele or Les Paul but just because some were extraordinary doesn't mean a lot of them weren't trash.
