Oh, I dunno… My father is in his mid seventies and is on his third Mason Pearson hairbrush. ~20 years each is pretty much as close to BIFL as you’re going to get with a hairbrush.

This is a forever brush and none of the dupes ever come close. I am a hairstylist of 25 years, I'm still using the same brush. My Mom still has ours from when I was growing up. Absolutely worth the investment. Stop buying cheap landfill.

What's a purchase under $50 that has genuinely improved your daily routine?
Fendrihan brand nail brush — ah, German engineering :-) Mason Pearson hair comb. If you want to be extra spendy, spring for the 100% boar bristle brush. This thing is incredible. I know it’s silly to wax poetic about a hair brush, but it makes a world of difference. I often buy them for friends as gifts because it’s too much money to justify spending on yourself, but when you have it, you get it. Truly a BIFL product. Dr. Bronner’s castile soap. We cut it with water and use it as a cleaning product. Bought a nice glass spray bottle for it. It cleans everything and has cut down on our cleaning supply clutter, and the scents are so fresh and nice. My husband has issues with strong scents but these never bother his nose or sinuses. American Trench socks. I re-up once a year or so with fresh ones. Worth every penny. Incredible 100% cotton socks, and American made. A chrome shaving razor handle. Men’s Room Barber Shop is an online site that sells beautiful grooming products. My handle feels heavy and luxurious in the hand, and never gets moldy or mildewy in the shower. You can also just keep buying the heads instead of throwing away the whole handle. It’s simplified the shaving process for me. Mine is the Popular model, with nylon and boar bristle. I like the feel of the nylon, but if it feels harsh to you then I’d skip it and get one of the all-boar-bristle models.

They’re definitely super expensive but I’ve had mine since 2020 (splurged during Covid because life was miserable) and it’s amazing. I have very thick hair and, honestly, using this brush is more of a hair treatment that I do before bed every night than a grooming or styling tool. Be sure to keep it clean (lots of videos online about caring for your MP brush) — I wasn’t washing mine often enough 😬 I can’t speak to whether or not other boar bristle brushes are just as good, however. But mine has been well worth it, though I had some expendable income. I simply could not have afforded it when I was at university.

I have a mason Pearson that I have loved for over a decade. I bought my daughter a Denman and the quality is clearly inferior. It’s a fine brush but it is not the same. It’s the difference between a luxury vehicle vs compact economy. They do the exact same thing but the experience is certainly different.

I'm soon-to-be 24.... I have my mom's old mason pearson brush from WELL before I was born. She bought a second one for herself after relinquishing it to her 10 year old daughter with butt-length tangle-prone wavy hair. Although I will be honest because I have wavy hair and it leaves me puffier than movie 1 Hermione Granger if don't have enough conditioner/ oil in my hair. Just because of my hair (and current hair styling trends) it hasn't ended up as an every day brush for me, but it is still a luxurious experience.
