  Ya I like the ho’opika ones but they are definitely more “sport” ones for me, I use them to golf and fish. The spinnaker ones don’t look so sporty. I got them there 2-3 years ago so I bet they’re just gone now because I do think Maui discontinued them.

  I have nothing but good things to say about Maui Jim's. I even got mine somewhere online for $115. When my mom sat on them after I got her out of the house fire and put her in the truck Maui Jim fixed them for free. And they're not owned by luxottica which is the devil.

  I still suggest Costco and maybe waiting til summer if they get better stock in especially since you want a basic pair. Maybe try looking into safety glasses that are sunglasses for a sturdy feel that are often polarized like Maui Jim

  I’ll say this much Maui Jim has been good to me & I have never regretted them. I also buy darn tough socks every single year for my wife & me bc we love to hike. Which ever you pick you’re supporting an excellent company & you won’t have regrets. Personally I’d get the sunglasses since you already need some & summer you will thank you but I don’t know your situation.

  I exclusively wear DT socks and I also have several pairs of Maui Jim’s. I highly recommend both. All of my Maui Jim’s have polarized glass lenses and the optics are top notch. Living in a city with 300+ days of sunshine a year makes them a requirement for me. However, I have bought several pairs of used Maui Jim’s on eBay for around $80 so you might want to look around for deals if spending the extra money is a concern. There are plenty of fakes out there, but if you choose a reputable seller who accepts returns you should be good. The fakes don’t have glass lenses AKAIK so that would be an obvious giveaway.

  Strongly disagree about expensive sunglasses not worth it. Maui Jim's are light-years better than Goodr or whatever shit optics you get at Amazon - especially if you fish, ski, or do other activities where light contrast is important. Polarized is one thing, but optics quality is so noticeable, much more so than wool socks. Also, Costco 3-pack of wool socks for $15 are fine. Darn Tough are great, especially if you use their lifetime warranty though.

  You can scoop Cabot and sons (same ppl as darn tough) socks at TJ Maxx/Marshalls/Sierra (occasionally they have darn tough) for like half the price they'd be at REI. They tend to have other socks paralleling DT in quality for $12-15 - I like smart wool socks and recently found Patagonia at Sierra. Maui jim don't tend to turn up there so I'd go with the glasses

  Maui Jim hands down. I've tried Serengeti, Revo, Ray-Ban, Oakley. Went snorkeling twice in Hawaii, every crew member was wearing Maui Jims. Their amazing customer care is outstanding. Just wish they'd bring back their old clamshell faux bamboo case.

  Costco Maui Jims are great for the price. I did speak to and Iowa rep recently. Who let me know that Costco anticipates a change in Maui Jim supply to them as Maui. Jim has recently taken on a new CEO that feels that Costco is hurting the brand name. So get them all you can we tend to be a third price.

  Another vote for Maui Jim. I also share good experiences with their service/repair department. I live in the Peoria, IL area where they are located. I can take them right into their facility and typically have them repaired or adjusted while I wait. I recently bought in a pair that was 10 years old and by the time it was said and done, they basically handed me a brand new pair of sunglasses for the cost of the lens replacement.

  MJ vote from me. I don’t baby them at all, keep a small screwdriver to tighten the screws occasionally but that’s it. Lenses have a few scratches but don’t affect my vision yet. Can’t tell you how many times those things have fallen off my head! When I compare them to a similar style Ray Bans I have for backups the quality is night and day.

  I would highly recommend any Maui Jim models that are made in Japan and or have titanium frames. Super super robust, also common enough that aftermarket lenses are available readily. I have the worst luck with keeping my lenses clean from scratches and scuffs, but even the used older lenses hold up. I just buy a pair of good condition used on marketplace for as cheap as I can find, and replace the lenses if needed. I recently found my old pair of Beaches which I thought I had lost for good a couple years ago, and I'm elated! Because I recently lost the pair I bought to replace them in brazil. 🤣

  I rolled with a single pair of Ray-Bans for years until my kids came along. The glasses didn’t last long after that. They were replaced with MauiJims / a flurry of Costco sales and I grew tired of them being destroyed. On a lark, I picked up a pair of the dark safety glasses from Harbor Freight, and while they are hardly stylish, if they get destroyed, I’m out $2 instead of $200. But, they will likely be long-lasting.

  Gift received: high quality hoodie from Equals, a SaaS company, for being an early user. I wear this thing all the time. It’s about 5 years old now and it can only be described as the high quality of the item you are referring to when you say “they don’t make them like they used to”. They made this one like they used to. Gift given: been on the operations and logistics side of this several times. Best one I still use is an Away suitcase. We got them for our whole team (did a credit to Away and gave out codes so people good pick what they wanted and put it towards a bigger case). Honorable mentions: Maui Jim sunglasses, Yeti items with a very small and out of the way branding.

  Glasses. UK/EU. Timeless and Classic shape.

  In a lot of ways the cheap acetate glasses you can get for like $6 are better than high quality glasses you could have bought 20 years ago. They're light, durable, have a little flex, and all in all they will last a long time. A lot of high end glasses now are made at the same places and it's really just branding, although some of them have pretty good warranties. I had a pair of persols that got loose after like 5 years and they fixed them and polished them and they looked like new when I got them back. I've heard Maui Jim is the same. Not that I would be in to this, but my mom has a pair of real turtle shell sunglasses that her mom bought back in like the 40's. So apparently they last a long time.

  These were built to be rebuilt. On the Felco website you can order almost any part of any model individually or as a kit. What other products could be given the ship of theseus treatment like this?

  Maui Jim sunglasses. I've had to send mine for repairs so often because I have small face and everything but kid sizes fall off too easily. I'm also a little clumsy.

  My Costas were heavy but they were also metal framed. My Maui Jim's are as light as plastic lens glasses, they claim their glass is thinner plus they have a plastic frame. I don't have the falling off problem, that sounds like a fit issue and you might need a more narrow frame. I've lost plastic lens glasses leaning over like that on a boat when they were too big for my face.

  I had a pair of glass lens Costas for 13 years before a rogue wave at the beach took them. I replaced them with Maui Jim's (also glass lens) and they seem comparable, I have 3 years on the new glasses. I also ended up with a pair of glass lens Ray Bans that I use for driving, I've only had them for 9 months but they seem ok so far.

  Smith Optics "Lifetime Warranty" is worthless.

  Same here. I had a pair of the Smith polarchromic which I had recommended to many people for fly-fishing. I cracked a lens and now they have no repair options other than call Revant?! Years back they would have replaced or offered large credit ( they offered 30% off MSRP which you can always beat by price shopping anyway) BTW Maui Jim will fix any pair of glasses for around $75 or if parts not available give 50% discount.

  Made the mistake of trying a pair of Maui Jim’s on Waikiki Beach. There was no chance of me giving them back. I’m from Hawaii and it was like I was seeing the ocean for the first time. I know it sounds like an exaggeration but I truly believe they make the world more beautiful. Not only that both me and my wife have gotten full replacement lenses at no cost. Easily worth the price.

  Any suggestions for high-quality polarized sunglasses that don’t have a huge markup just because of the brand?

  Maui Jim, they really hold up and the lenses are great quality. I've actually sent them in for lens replacements twice (my own fault) and thats on a 5 year old pair. Great company to deal with.

  Maui Jim is probably the biggest sunglass brand that hasn't been swallowed up by Luxottica. They are still an expensive luxury brand, but one of the few where it still seems you are actually getting what you pay for.

  I have some polarized shady rays. They are so dark. There is no color or light gradient. Everything is equally dark. Some of the Maui Jim I’ve tried on handle different light gradients so well. Like you wear them on a cloudy day and the lenses adjusts and almost illuminated what you’re looking at, and on sunny days they darken and handle the glare better without diminishing what you’re looking at.

  i know you don't want huge markup but there is a huge difference in lens quality with Maui Jim or RayBan polarized lenses than the cheaper ones. RayBan in particular does extremely good polarization and i will pay the higher prices everytime for them for daily wear. for other things, like outdoor activities such as golf i will do some cheaper ones just so i won't get upset if i lose or break them

  I have pairs from Goodr, Knockaround and Maui Jim (bought through a friend's employee discount -- 75% off). The Maui Jims are definitely the clearest, but they're not so much better than the others to justify their retail price. And because they are so expensive, I feel like I need to baby them, which is why I have the other pairs.

  Maui Jims! Great quality, great optics, great warranty. I also hear really good things about Smith. Note, I used to be a big Costa fan. Their quality and warranty have plummeted in recent years. Tons of stupid molded rubber parts that fall and can’t effectively be repaired. They stripped their warranty so it’s a shell of what it used to be. People still are loyal to them, but I’d look elsewhere.

  Do you remember is the lenses were glass or polycarbonate? My Randolph’s are glass and have been incredibly durable. Though I can’t remember any drops, I guess like you said if you get “the one” bad drop that’ll just about ruin a glass lense. Maui Jim’s polycarb lenses should be able to take that drop a little better I’d imagine.

  Completely disagree on sunglasses. I wear sunglasses almost everyday. Optics on the glass from something like Maui Jim or Smith (and maybe Costa although I think quality has gone down a bit) make a huge difference. The lenses and frames also tend to be better constructed, are more durable, and fit better. The warranties are also much better. If you are someone who breaks or loses glasses often, then get the cheap ones. But my $250 Maui Jims are well worth it to me. I tried some cheaper glasses (knock around and goodr) and the fit was terrible, then I tried a mid tier brand and the optics were just sub par. Once you go to high end glass, nothing else compares. I don’t see a point on designer glasses that are expensive but don’t necessarily have good optics.

  For non-prescription, Costco has many Maui Jim sunglasses for less than $125. Many of them are glass lenses (SuperThin glass in Maui speak). I don’t think you can get a better deal than that if you like any of the designs they sell. With Rayban, the classic ones are glass lenses (aviator, wayfarer etc.). You can sometimes find them for less than $150 at third party vendors like Jomashop.

  Maui Jim or Costa is all we’ve worn for like the last 20 years. Mostly the glass lenses. I wear my sunglasses every single day, husband, too. Like every day. Our pairs have held up well. We have sent one or two in for lens replacement over the years and that process has always gone smoothly.

  Where Does "Buy It for Life" Not Make Sense?

  Costco tends to have high end sunglasses for (relatively) cheap. I love Maui Jims but their $300+ price tag keeps me from buying them. Costco every once in a while will stock them for around $115-$130.
