  Are these worth it for $1200?

  When I was shopping for a new washer and dryer in 2020, I had planned to get a speed queen because my mom has always loved hers and the internet says they are BIFL but all of my research said that they had recently majorly changed the machine so that it would have more modern efficiency and they weren’t as good now. I went with the Maytag commercial version of the speed queen instead and have been very happy. I’m not sure if they ended up changing the speed queen back or not, I haven’t been in the market so I haven’t researched it since 2020.

  I have an old kenmore series 80 washer bought over 15 years ago. Had some minor issues but easy to fix and parts are cheap. Same with a Maytag gas dryer. Don’t have to worry about a circuit board going bad.

  Thinking to buy Speed Queen Washer & Dryer? Think twice...

  We had a new Maytag when married, it lasted 22 years, then we got a kenmore front load set, the dryer started a small fire on the circuit board, tossed it, kept the washer outside to wash carharts and rags and rugs for years. So far our LG set has been good for five years now, and I kept the Maytag for a backup just in case

  Looking for electric clothesdryer brand suggestion.

  In your price range the plain Whirlpool stuff and the simpler Maytag models come out the best for basic reliability, they’re basically the same guts anyway and they do the job without fuss. Dryers are pretty straightforward machines but the clever bits bolted on for marketing are what usually cause the grief. The drum and motor rarely die unless someone never clears the lint. What really goes are the moistuer sensors, the little door switches, and the control boards that get cooked over time... you don’t want to be chasing mystery codes on a Sunday morning. If you want something that lasts, look for one with a plain mechanical thermostat rather than a whole bank of sensors pretending to be smarter than they are. Make sure the lint trap actually comes out fully so you can clear the chute or you’ll roast something inside. LG and Samsung push a lot of delicate logic boards and those do not enjoy heat and lint at all and that’s before they get a few years old. Skip anything bragging about advanced sensor dry because that’s usually the first thing to give you grief and a basic dial with simple controls will just keep going even if it looks a bit old school.

  Mine is not as pretty. It had a lot of use and I often overloaded it when the kids lived at home. It went through 3 kids almost from birth and my husband and I. Now retired, I still do almost nightly washes.

  Unpopular opinion, I hate my Speed Queen

  I hated my TR3 Speed Queen washer. I didn’t like the short wash cycle because my clothes ended up with a nasty smell to them and it left deodorant stains in the armpits of every shirt we owned. My laundry ended up smelling like an old lady’s linen closet. Don’t get me started on bedsheets. It was sold to me as being so heavy duty that you could put bulky items like comforters in them. Nope. Didn’t work that way. Trying to sell my washer now as I ended up buying a Maytag washer and dryer. ( for context, I had a Maytag Neptune dryer that I loved)

  What’s a purchase that’s not fun, not flashy but now you swear by it?

  I have the 110” by 110” comforter and bought a Bravos XL washer and dryer so I could wash and dry cal king sets. The washer is great, works well. With the dryer, I have to dry the comforter in bursts with dryer balls and take it out and reposition it periodically to get it all dry.

  What signs do you look for to tell if something will actually last years?

  0 reviews ever speak to longevity, so using that as a longevity source is ignorant. Warranty is a good relative indicator of quality. Especially when (say) you find that every washing machine ever has a one year warranty, but you see that the Maytag MVWP586GW has a five year warranty.....hmmm.....let me focus efforts on that item! The search engine here. Most overlooked item ever. You an in 10 minutes find the industry leaders. But do know....you should go deeper as (say) Timberland makes BIFL boots and shitbox boots, so don't run into the Timberland store and buy shit by the armload thinking all they sell is BIFL. Know this means you need specifics with brands and don't be a brand champion or asshat. Yes...Samsung sucks with refrigerators, but their phones are titanic....don't be a Samsung asshat hater. You can flex warranties with certain stores like Costco and/or credit card extensions which adds confidence.

  I also just bought the same Maytag and was about to recommend it. It may not be the best in the world, I've never used a Bosch, but it's the best dishwasher I've ever used. It's so quiet I keep accidentally opening it while it's running because I want to add one more dish.

  This is his entry level Maytag. I got the MDB8949 model what is a runner up rec by wirecutter. It's quiet,,no smart nonsense features or capacitive touch buttons. It has nice tactile feeling buttons Third rack is very spacious for standard size cup, bowls, utensils It has a food chopper and dual filtration (the similar KitchenAid model has triple filtration, extra spray arm for the top rack and that's it).. It's well built, dishes come out clean and dry I bought it from whirlpool inside pass for $550 last yr.. I don't think $1300 Bosch with crystal dry and wifi would be worth the $600 extra (at least for me)

  This is gonna be an unpopular opinion here because this sub is strictly Bosch. I was super closed to getting the fancy 800 series Bosch, but because I plan on moving within 5 years I really hated to dish out the 1400 when it wasn’t necessary.   The ability to find replacement parts and cost of said parts should be considered. There is very good value in the top loading mostly mechanical maytags, whirlpools, etc. Mine are 12 years old. Zero problems with the washer. Replaced the heat element and thermostat in the dryer a couple of times...likely because of our wonky exhaust outlet. The parts were cheap, arrived in two days, and youtube helped me fix them quickly and easily. Some of the big front load LGs, will cost you a crazy amount to fix should something go wrong, plus some areas have a real shortage of repair people. This absolutely matters. I would take something that needs a couple of small, cheap, diy repairs over 10-20 years over something that only fails 2% of the time, but when it does it is catastrophic.

  I know there is no such thing as a BIFL appliance, but what are your thoughts on this washer? Please no speed queen recommendations, they are too expensive and don't hold enough.

  Personally, I would avoid LG, and lean towards Whirlpool, Maytag, Amana, Speed Queen, Kenmore, Frigidaire, Electrolux, and more. I know a few of those fall under the same parent companies, but they all specialize in appliances. If you want a Speed Queen but can't afford one now, maybe look at marketplace, nextdoor, etc for a local used one cheap and then save for a bit until you can afford the Speed Queen. I've seen washer dryer sets sell for $40 online and they'll usually run for a year or two at least and you could use that time to save and find a deal on what you actually want and something you know will last.

  It doesn't have to be Speed Queen, but a general rule of thumb for appliances is to not buy from a company that makes computers, phones, etc. But from a company that does appliances as their main business. I recently got a Maytag washer and am waiting to buy a dryer. One other thing to consider is how often you'll use it, I wash a large load about once every 2ish weeks while most companies rate their machines off of multiple loads a week.

  I have a commercial grade Maytag MVWP575GW top loader with agitator. Made in USA (not from a big box store). Very basic workhorse with deep water settings. It runs, on the average, 2-3 times a day. Highly recommend .

  Older speed queens are excellent. A law was passed in 2017 that changed the construction of the machines. Newer machines are garbage. I had a speed queen set and got rid of it for a Maytag set that is fantastic.

  You need a top loading machine for that kind of soil. A front loader isn't going to get that clean enough.  I would go for the Maytag MVWP586GW, which is the entry level commercial grade machine, or a Speed Queen / Hubesch tr5. I think the speed Queen is a better machine, but the Maytag is likely going to be a better deal.

  Speed Queen and Maytag are who you want to go with. Do not buy the Maytag units from big box stores unless they're from the Commercial line or the base white set. See if you have a local Maytag outlet. Check the reviews on their base white set for the budget friendly option. Otherwise look up Speed Queen and see if its in your price range. If so look up a local dealer. Avoid Samsung appliances like the plague they are.

  I have an old Maytag "Dependable Care" series washing machine... It's an absolutely excellent machine... Only problem is that the replacement parts are starting to become hard to find... Most likely failure in these machines is the tub seal at the bottom of the wash tub is no longer available, and they do eventually wear out... The timer mechanisms are still available for now at least, but they are getting expensive and likely won't be available much longer.

I had the older model and some part broke during COVIDs and was on galactic backorder. Called them up and they sent me a brand new one with a reset to the 5 year warranty.

  Run from LG, as fast as you can. I had an LG dryer in which the drum cracked open. Literally. The metal drum cracked. In-laws had other issues with an LG set as well. We switched to Maytag about 4-5 years ago and haven't looked back. That being said, we'll probably purchase a Speed Queen when the time comes to replace.

I'm korean and will never buy a LG house appliance ever again.. it took 7 years for my compressor to go out.. which sadly seems a bit longer than other comments I saw here... they did replace the compressor for free since it was within the 10 year warranty period. just not happy about the 350 dollar installation cost. but for sure next time. it's going to be GE, may tag or whirlpool

  All 5 of my new LG appliances broke within 6 years of ownership. Two compressor failures in fridge Replace the water pump in my washer The microwave plastic crumbling in different places In the stove one of the tops doesn't work unless I turn on one other one. They have a recall on my stove now because apparently it's easy to turn on if you brush against it. The dryer broke, no power I will try to investigate this weekend. All appliances were purchased brand new from Lowe's 6 years ago. My Maytag dishwasher is running like a champ. Appliances are not made to last anymore.

  They don't make BIFL appliances anymore. All of my Kenmore and Whirlpool appliances from past decades started dying about 2 years ago. I replaced my dishwasher with a Maytag. I replaced my washer & dryer with LG. I'll be surprised to get 7-8 years out of them. My old Kenmore refrigerator is still hanging on.

  Maytag Commercial washer and dryer is where it's at. Don't let the name full you - it's sold by Lowes or any other Maytag dealer. It's more "old school" and is legitimately better built. No automatic anything, other than the dryer having an automatic dry sensor. And there's always Speed Queen.

  Dryers are stupid simple. Whirlpool/Maytag/Kenmore all share parts and they’re all less than $50. Most are like $20. Unless the control unit circuit board fries, you can basically repair them yourself for <$50 and they’ll last a lifetime. Washers on the other hand…. Lots more pumps and seals and hoses and gunk. Buy a good one

  I have a Maytag top loading washer and mechanical dryer that are about to hit 20 years old. In that time the following things have been replaced (1) fuse, (2) belt. Total repair cost around $150. Don't get sucked into buying bullshit high efficiency front loaders or anything with electronics. Get fully mechanical.

  I have the same Maytag as shown in the photo. I found out yesterday that I must buy a new washer. This washing machine is almost 37 years old. The motor was rebuilt in 2009. It has been a wonderful machine, so I dread buying a new one that will not last long at all.

  I believe Amana is pretty much all you can get with non-computer controls, it's 3.8 cu ft. That's going to be the closest thing you can get to a classic and basic manual machine.   1993 GE clock radio/alarm/cassette. Still works 32 years later. 1997 Craftsman self propelled lawnmower with 6.25 horsepower Tecumseh engine. Other than replacing a dead ignition coil at 17 years old, it's still works flawlessly with no repairs. Still on the original blade and belt. 1999 Honda Accord LX 4 cyl 5 speed manual built in Japan. Bought new and still the daily driver. 1984 Toyota truck my dad bought new and passed down to me in 1996. Other than regular scheduled maintenance, it has only had a water pump, clutch, and clutch master cyl replaced. All original, down to the 41 year old power steering fluid. 1975 Maytag washer and dryer pulled out of the scrapyard for free almost 20 years ago. Still kicking.   So, the line is actually a residential product that Maytag makes called Maytag Commercial. Easy google, black instrument panel, no buttons or led just dials. We almost went speed queen. I ended up doing the deep dive and eventually found some guy who is just an absolute nut for investigating washers and dryers and he concluded the Maytag commercial were nearly as reliable and durable as the speed queens but far more affordable. But thanks, this reminds me I still gotta figure out how to get to that filter to check it!

  Maytag Ensignia commercial washer and dryer. They’re as basic as it gets and all we could afford back in 2005 when we got married and they still run flawlessly. I replaced the rollers and belt on the dryer last year but that’s it. We probably use them 4 or 5 times a week.

  Old Maytag A710 Washing Machine

  NOTHING is built like this washer, not even Speed Queen comes close. You can patch the holes with JB weld until finding another tub. Get friendly with a local mom and pop appliance outfit, they'll probably let you take one, even for free. You'll need a spanner wrench and hammer to remove the tub nut and stem/boot seal (good time to replace those while the tub is out) that has left handed threads (right loosey, lefty tightly) to remove the inner tub amd outer tub.   Well, whirlpool bought Maytag in 2006. I wouldn't buy a new one either. But i definitely would have rebuilt that 30 year old Maytag. Even if it cost you $1k to have someone else rebuild it for you, it's cheaper than a new speedqueen, you're likely to get another 30 years out of it, and you aren't dumping something in a landfill.

  We bought a GE Ultra fresh. To the boards went out one week past the warranty. Not very happy. Bought a Maytag instead. The repairman said he had 4 GE with similar board problems in a month. Recommended Maytag for a moderate priced washer. More expensive model Speed Queen a lot more reliable.

  You buy washing machines really on what bedding you are washing and/or if someone in your house has terribly stained items due to their career. If you want to do king size bedding regularly, the only answer to this is a bigger capacity which means you can forget the BIFL kings. This means you need to buy something around 5 cubic feet in capacity and for that, you need to pick as there is no BIFL king in that segment. Now if you are OK with going to the laundrymat once a month for that bedding, a Speed Queen of any type (Hibsch for the Canadians) and Maytag MVWP586GW or if you can find the now discontinued MVWP575GW are the hivemind BIFL washers that will crank out loads every 30 minutes until you give in. For the Speed Queen cheerleaders: Please read the reply before jumping up and down as while your king size comforter may work in yours, that is not a blanket statement (I kill myself) that every one will and you recommending someone take a $1400 chance is a pretty shitty thing to do.

  1996 Maytag Dependable Care Washing machine. It's washed countless loads of laundry thru two generations of children, one generation of which used cloth diapers which generate a LOT of laundry... Probably has done over 10000 loads of laundry by now. Still works great, is washes very well and quickly too. Only repairs in 29 years of use was replacing the lower drum seal a couple years ago, and recently had to clean the contacts in the mechanical timer controls. Otherwise, it is a warhorse of a machine.  I also do own a 1980 Kenwood Chef kitchen mixer, it works great as well, is built like a tank... Much sturdier than those modern KitchenAid mixers, but it only sees occasional use. Most likely it will outlast me.

He suggested the Speed Queens (and maybe a Maytag Commercial) if we wanted a true replacement, but then went on to say that everyone on our street could go out and buy the same make and model of the other guys and some would last 20 years and some 3...so basically its a crap shoot.

  Go to a used appliance store…. Buy an early 2000s direct drive washing machine from Whirlpool, Kenmore (made by Whirlpool), or a Maytag. These machine are based on a timeless design, durable, and very simple to repair. The one I bought will last at least another 15 years…… Whereas the modern electronic version with the mandated “Guberment” efficiency standards may very well last 7 years at most. Manufacturers design these machines last about that long. They also price them so that it’s cheaper to buy new than to repair….. As for my 20 year old “new to me washer” any part I need for it is still readily available from the manufacturer.

  Estate Furniture - business auctions (careful as sometimes stuff wasn’t maintained properly) We got our Maytag commercial washer and dryer for $1500. Would have been cheaper but we got ones just a few months old. They will last 30 years. Failed restaurants are really common and you can often get the stainless prep tables for less than $100. Also restaurant supply stores get you way better quality for the money. Oddly, I replaced our carrier air handler motor for half the price from a restaurant supply store. $600 from a carrier supplier, $275 next day from the supply store. Need some extra $$$ - old fishing lures are a goldmine.

  You don’t need a washer or dryer to last a lifetime. 10 years is good service life, at which point you’re likely better off with something newer and more efficient. Whirlpool brands (e.g. Maytag) are made in USA, well supported, reliable, and parts are cheap and plentiful. I usually leave appliances behind when we move, but I’ve never had one fail in 25 years of homeownership.

  1974 Lady Kenmore dryer. Still working like a champ!

  The newer dryers just don't hold up, mainly due to cheap control boards that go wonky or conk out. Ventless dryers require significantly intense deep cleaning maintenance schedules that has to be done often for peak performance. I'll pass on that, Then there's the possibility of heat pump failures if it's one of those models. My 1976 Maytag dryer works just fine and loads are done in 35-40 minutes. Electricity is cheap in my area, .08 cents per a kilowatt.

Maytag (owned by Whirlpool) MVWP575GW Washer and MEDP575GW Dryer have commercial grade components and should last long. Amana (owned by Whirlpool) NTW4516FW Washer and NED4655EW Dryer should last a moderate amount of time of at least 7 years.

  When our washer/dryer died a few years back, the appliance repair guy highly recommended buying Whirlpool or Maytag bc the parts are less expensive and they are easy to repair. He recommended staying away from Samsung and LG and all the extra digital bells and whistles (more parts to fail). We ended up going to Electrolux bc it's what we could source during Covid but if I had to do it over again I would probably go with a Speed Queen. My friend bought one recently and LOVES it!

  Maytag wringer washer, bought used but was made somewhere in the 1950s. I need to put in a new pump, but it also has gravity feed so I really don't miss the pump. I have a treadle sewing machine from the 1920s that still works quite well. I have other electric sewing machines from the 1959s that still work well. I have a mangle (roller type ironer) from the 1950s that still works well. Right now I'm using older bedroom furniture from the 1930s, which have seen better days, but are still functional. Unfortunately, I just moved and many of my old stuff did not make it with me, or is in storage, so I can't check out if they are still working or not.

  We’ve got a 20 year old set of Maytag commercial washer/dryer that we got when we got married (it was the cheapest set and didn’t have all the cool stuff but we’ve grown to appreciate the quality and simplicity and reliability). I had to replace the main roller for the drum last year and did all the rollers, belt, etc that came in a service kit. I deep cleaned everything in it and the lint vent system. Wasn’t too bad. Those speed queens gotta wait a little longer LOL

  Washer / Dryer find an older Maytag, or Kenmore that are in decent shape. My wife and I spent $250 on a used maytag/kenmore washer dryer from her friend 31 years ago. Replaced the pump in the washer once, and the belts on the dryer twice. The heating element once. Both are still working as they did they first day we used them. Most new appliances are built to fail. Plastic parts are always breaking.

  Nothing. Not unless you buy an old school set.  My cousin has repaired appliances for 30+ years. He told me the new machines are built to break; they'll have one major break in the first 6 months to 1.5yrs or so.  He told me to get an old Speed Queen set or a Kenmore set with the Maytag motor. Whrn I lived in S FL just a few years ago the set I had was from the 70s and ran like clockwork.  Get a set from the 90s, 2000s. They're all mechanical, cheap to repair and last forever.

  Am I the only one that doesn’t like their Speed Queen?

  We had SQ top loaders in a previous apartment complex I lived in’s laundry rooms and I swear to god the top loader delicate cycle is fake. I wash everything to this sub’s recommendations (cold water, gentle cycle, 2 tbsp laundry detergent, gentle, low heat dry) and I also had a similar issue with towels and clothes being damaged by how rough it is on your textiles. The dryers also get too hot for a “low” heat setting. It ruined my microfiber towels in 2 wash+dry sessions. I tried their SQ front loaders and had less of an issue with the roughness on my textiles, but their delicate cycle was too short for me to feel like it actually got my clothes/linens clean. Let’s just say I will never buy a SQ laundry set as a result of my experiences. Maytag, LG, or Miele are my current choices if I need to buy new laundry appliances.

  Absolutely not. As someone who is educated in appliance’s I can say Bosch is the same as everyone else selling dishwashers, they are very computerized and prone to electronic failure. They aren’t what they were 15 years ago unfortunately as Bosch used to be quite reliable of a brand. This writer is looking for something that will actually last without repair for several years and won’t be prone to electronic failure. The only dishwasher in America we still have that meets their criteria is the Whirlpool Powerclean module dishwashers made from 1985-2011 which includes Kenmore Ultrawash dishwashers, Kitchenaids Inglis Estate some Maytags made within that timeframe. They had big induction motors that cleaned and dried dishes within an hour and the latest versions weren’t even very loud with a tuned sound absorber whirlpool installed, they had a truly self cleaning filter module unlike any other dishwasher & they were notoriously reliable. I have two that are still running, they just never give up on their owners and everyone within the appliance enthusiast and experts community will tell you this is the go to machine for strong reliability and high performance. The only shit there is with them is that you can’t buy them new anymore obviously as they were discontinued in 2011 and if you were to have an issue like needing a new rack or a new control panel or motor it can be replaced very easily and there’s so many parts still available for them it’s all about how you go and find a used one you must inspect it & ensure it’s in good condition still as you would buying anything used.

  You posted this 2 years ago, but I wanted to say thank you, because I have a part in my model that is exactly this one, that I think is on borrowed time. I was able to MacGyver it and its been working for 4 years since this fix, but I know it won't last forever. I found the part, and part number for the timer (The failing part) and I immediately found replacements on ebay. This machine will never die. I will make sure of that.
