A few brands I'll probably stick with for life
For me patagonia is hit or miss. Bought a sweather last month and it's already pilling. The same sweather but a different colour and full zip is still going strong after 3 years. A couple of brands I do like are Carhart, Meindl ( German brand for hiking- and work boots), Fjall raven which i know is also hit or miss for some, Felco pruning shears and the Dutch brand/store Hema for basic shirts and such.

Respectfully, nobody that you know. Plenty of older folks in New England are. When I worked in a gear shop, I sold plenty of old school Lowa, Meindl, Scarpa, etc. Again, I agree with you that comfort is more important. I go through 2-3 Lone Peaks a year. But it depends on what OP is looking for.

You need to get a footbed insert, look at Superfeet, to replace the standard insole in any shoe you buy. Try and size them by your heel size - there should be guides online. I think hiking/trail shoes are a good option as they typically have higher density foam and are more durable than typical lightweight running shoes etc. New Balance have a good selection of wide options, or look into brands like Meindl, Scarpa, La Sportiva for really high quality.

Yeah let me know. There are a lot of good options on the market. You want the brown leather ones as they are the standard issue colour now. I'm looking to buy a pair soon. I outgrew my meindl's I have had since 2011. My feet grew a size using TRT in my 30s 😂

Merrell Nova GTX durability problems — looking for better waterproof alternatives
Lifespan of this type of shoe is 6-12 months no matter the brand. Tbh i just gave up and now i wear 10lbs monsters everyday - its mostly a matter of getting used to. Look for something thats full leather(but cordura inserts are fine for the summer), doesnt have too much unnecessary seams, and doesnt try to hard to look tactical. Example brands are Haix, or Meindl - they are pricey, but you can often buy them in surplus stores in new condition for 1/3rd of the price.

Choose a quality brand: Meindl, Hanwag, Lowa or Lundhags. Choose boots with a full leather upper, metal hardware and a resolable structure. Take care of the leather once in a while. That's a solid recipe right there!

Best walking shoes for men: which ones do you recommend?
Like others are saying in the thread, for the most comfortable shoe, go to a running store and fitted there. But keep in mind that running shoes wear out after 500 miles of running or \~1,000 miles of walking. If you're looking to have a shoe that lasts longer, tell them you're looking for a trail running shoe with a lot of support. I got \~7 years out of my Salomons as winter running/walking shoes, and these days I use them as yard work shoes since they don't have the support they used to. You might have luck with a good pair of hiking shoes too. Meindl makes the comfort fit walker that should hold up for a long time.

Work is paying for me to get snakeproof/waterproof boots, what wont immediately fall apart?
TLDR: LaCrosse Grange and Rattler brand snake gaiters for water/muck less than 18 inches deep. Probably looking at US$180 for the combo. No boots will be waterproof if it's deeper than that. Then you use waders unless it's hot. If it's hot it's better to just wear synthetic blend (quicker drying, non-cotton) pants, merino wool socks, and non-waterproof boots you don't mind messing up. Longform for anyone who may be in the same situation, or looking for more long-term solutions: For almost 20 years I have worked year-round in Texas swamp, desert, rocky slope, Piney woods, and everything in-between, kicking a shovel the whole time. I wear a combination of boots and snake gaiters. My gaiters are Rattler brand, and I'm usually wearing them just for thorny brush or vines. I don't wear them when it gets above 95° F. I only ever wear two types of boots: Zamberlans (really expensive) and La Crosse Grange 18 ($100). I can hike all day in either, and both are waterproof; Zamberlans are Gore-tex and breathable and LaCrosse are rubber and NOT breathable. Zamberlans are about as BIFL as waterproof work-hiking boots can get. I'm on about 3.5 years on my current pair and they're still waterproof and bombproof as they were day 1. Similar quality brands are Alico, Meindl, La Sportiva, Danner, and Lowa. Asolo may fit in there somewhere, but they've fallen apart on me before. The LaCrosse are gonna be like 1/4 the price of the Zamberlans, but they're just rubber boots with a shank (this is VERY important to have in whatever boot you get). They'll last a good long while and are super comfortable for rubber boots, but eventually their tread wears down, they get holes, and the material will break down, probably after a year of frequent use. If you're gonna be in legitimate swamp, where it's over 18-inch deep water, then snake gaiters and waterproof boots ain't gonna do shit for you anyway. They'll just weigh you down, which is more dangerous than snakebites. If you're in hot weather, I don't recommend thigh, hip, or chest waders, either. It's a recipe for heat stroke, which is also far more common and far more frequently deadly than snakebites. Better to just wear all quick-dry clothing (I wear Duluth Flex Firehose if vegetation is thick...otherwise I wear Wrangler ATG quick-dry pants) and boots that you won't mind messing up each day. To help take care of your feet, wear merino wool socks. Any merino wool blend will be better than cotton. They'll be more important than your boots if you'll be wet all day.

Ladies, what are the MOST comfortable boots you’ve worn for walking 10k+ steps a day?
There are a few I would recommend - for outdoors hike try Meindl, its like walking on a cloud, walked the Camino last year and my feet were great, no blister, no tired feet… they are a bit more expensive but I have mine for over 20 years and they are perfect! For work, dressy try Nero Giardini, especially the platform booties, look great, a lovely heel, and SO comfortable. I have a pair I wear for work/dressy and I have them for years. Great buy about E100 - E150. These are fabulous heels and very comfortable to wear walking in town too. I’d recommend for city commuting. But I also tried the HOKA One runners, and I got really severe pains in my hips and ankles, I couldn’t adjust to them. Did anyone else have a problem with these?

Hiking shoes - all my footwear gets a worn out heel from the inside and I am desperate to find something that lasts.
100 € for hiking boots is very little in our market today and Columbia is kind of a low-quality sportswear brand (I have had success with their fleeces, but their jackets e.g. used to break on me constantly). I just got new Meindl boot for 200 € and I was happy it wasn't full price (I think 280 €, their best ones go for 400+ €). Hiking boots are expensive, especially if you want them to use for a long time. You should pay attention to boots that can (a) have their insert replaced, (b) be resoled and (c) have steel eyelets.

What do you walk around on back home? Unless I’m hiking, I tend to just take whatever comfortable shoes I prefer. For me that’s generally a pair of leather boots with a rubber sole (Truman, in my case), which work with anything. For less intensive walking around town, decent leather sneakers with cupsoles (for me that’s currently Garment District, Parbleu, Skolyx - generally these are made in Portugal or Spain, EU brands) That’s just what works for me. Intensive trekking through nature and my Meindl hiking boots come out.

I live in Europe and I love my Meindl's for any serious amount of walking. You can go full hiking shoe with an ankle cuff, but they've got plenty of regular looking shoes that still support you much better than your average sneaker. I have two pairs that are 7+ years old and they're holding up well. Just had them resoled and they're good again :).

Many great recommendations here already! I would add Panama Jack (Spanish) for great stylish boots, And Meindl or Lowa (German) for Hiking boots. Don't forget if you are in the European union: You got extensive consumer rights, for example a two year warranty by law all across the EU. Look them up on the website of the EU.

Fair point. Proper tailored shoes are about 5x that. Only shoes i've bought that were even close to 300 were my meindl boots.
