What Are the Best Travel Shoes That Are Actually Worth It?
I really don't think there can be a single answer to this question, but I'll tell you what I do, with roughly a two shoe rotation depending on the travel. If I am not going to be walking or hiking on unpaved surfaces, I'll generally take a pair of "walking" running shoes. That is, something that's fairly sturdy and well-cushioned, and *not* meant for running fast. Currently, that's a pair of On CloudEclipse and was On CloudMonsters before this. On makes reasonably "fashionable" sneakers that you can get away with wearing in restaurants, tourist attractions, etc, and the ones that are not aimed at running fast are reasonably durable (will last a year or so). If I'm traveling in summer and need a sneaker that's really airy, I keep a pair of black Altra Escalante Racers (fully mesh, almost, and collapsible) for that purpose. For trips where I need shoes that will work for hiking, I LOVE LOVE LOVE my La Sportiva TX4 approach shoes. In fact, just like someone else suggested Lems, I highly recommend considering approach shoes as a semi-BIFL walking shoe option, and if you pick a suede/leather option, they're frequently not too bad looking. Super-comfortable, highly durable, waterproof options, and good for street & trail. Just not cushioned like a traditional sneaker. If you need something that's more "business casual", consider something like Mephisto, Allen Edmonds, Danner, etc. None of any of this is BIFL but you should have many options for shoes that both look good and are well-suited to your travel needs. Fwiw, nothing I am suggesting is so expensive as to be considered an "investment", either (like a handmade boot or sneaker would be), so just pick a general category you like, then a style you're aiming for, and narrow down the brands that sell something along those lines.

work heel recommendation?
For a placeholder shoe to get going you might have good luck with Vionic, they're designed by some podiatrists. For a long term permanent product you probably need something European like Mephisto or Ferragamo or the like.

What's the best BIFL item you own?
Best BIFL items I have: Kitchen: Le creuset : Standard Dutch oven The big frying pan 11.75” Sauce pot - the smaller kind Tea kettle Vitamix Blender Zojirushi Induction Rice Cooker Cold Steel chef knife - $26 https://a.co/d/18dqGoL I’ll die on this hill. I had Miyabi, Henckels, all kinds of fancy pants $500 knives. This $26 knife beats the shit out of them. Sharp, strong, throw that bitch in the dishwasher… sharpens to a razors edge and holds it. 5 years old, still like new. It’s also super thick, so you can abuse it pry bones then go finely chop garnish. I love this goddamn thing. Bonavita Coffee maker - 12 years old works perfect. Outdoors/sports/hobbies: Tikka rifle - will go to my grandkids. TRX - training system - nylon webbing - no reason for it not to last forever Pentax 645 Medium Format lenses. I’ve been using them across camera systems for decades now. Still like new, so smooth and beautiul. Got them new old stock from Japan 20 years ago. Unbelievably cheap at the time. Like $75 a lens. I have 4-5. You can adapt them these days to any mirrorless camera. Travel: 1x saddleback slim briefcase still like new after 10 years 1x WP Standard , duffel bag, they don’t make the one I have anymore, but it’s similar to this: https://wpstandard.com/products/panam-duffle-bag Boots: Redwing Iron Rangers (most comfortable) Blundstone boots (daily drivers, also crazy comfortable) Mephisto winter Boots Tecovas Ostrich “Dean” boots. So unbelievably good looking, comfortable, and the quality is excellent. I don’t wear them too often, but they will last forever. Ostrich is a very tough leather. VIBA slippers, best fucking house footwear ever. The “Roma Leather” Clothes: I destroy all my clothes, these are the things that have survived the longest: Double RL dress shirts , western style overall, reallllllly expensive but they just get better and better with age and last and last. I wear these to work, and no tears, wear marks or rips. “By Robert James” dress shirts the quality is exceptional and he’s a small business. https://www.byrobertjames.com/ If you like “John Varvatos” style, but want it to last more than one washing or wear, buy Robert James anything… Furniture: I’ve had great experince in quality and longevity with Crate and Barrel. Yes, big brand, at least up until a few years ago, their furniture is made pretty well. A friend works in the industry and she said they are the last big manufacturer to make real furniture. I have a few RH pieces, like wardrobes, dinner table etc, all great, but from about 15 years ago. Not sure how they are doing nowadays. This is all natural selection. These are the items that have made it through the gauntlet of life, both reliability, but also usefulness, utility, and aesthetics. They look good, they work, and I actually use them.

Is this normal “wear and tear”?
These actually have replaceable soles. I got them because they were supposed to have a longer life span than 22 days. They are made in Portugal. The upper is entirely leather, inside and out. They are extremely comfortable shoes.

What brand of shoes that lasts?
I used to go through shoes every 12-18 months…then I discovered Mephisto. Shoes fit like a glove, are unbelievably comfortable, and after 8 years with the same pair, they look amazing and feel like nothing else. Never going back. Pricey, but they’ve already paid themselves over many times in longevity.

Best shoes for walking/standing all day?
Birkenstock Dansko Mephisto Adelante

New shoes for every day walking and gym?
Mephistos. Bought them for my mother-in-law who walked 5 miles minimum every day for many years and completely wore down these shoes well they stood up to her for longer than anything else. Instead of buying new you just send them back to the company and they replace the insoles and the soles and laces and make them look and feel brand new for much less than the cost of a new pair.

Black non slip work shoes for walking all day
Biiiig Chelsea guy. The comfort craftsman’s are actually the next pair I’m looking at adding after my Mephisto Murray’s changed my life being so absurdly comfortable. If you actually use them, are on your feet for 8+ hours — not just walking from your parking space to your office and home — good shoes are literally priceless, and as you say, last a long time with minor upkeep. Look, I looove my viberg shoes I have. Gorgeous material and built like tanks, very much BIFL craftsmanship. But make no mistake, you WILL fucking hate your life after standing in them for 50 hours over a single week. Horrible 🤣

Black non slip work shoes for walking all day
Get Birkenstocks, super birki or profi birki. If you want something less ugly you’ll have so spend more. Mephisto shoes are the best I’ve found balancing comfort with good materials without getting absurdly expensive.

Going to Europe, suggestions for comfortable, not-ugly walking shoes that will last?
Consider Mephistos.

Going to Europe, suggestions for comfortable, not-ugly walking shoes that will last?
Allbirds are incredibly comfortable. When the sole and main fabric are the same color, they look rather chic and less sneaker-like. Mephisto has several non sneaker walking shoes that might be what you are looking for.
