Recommendations on bread knives and opinions on Wusthof double serrated
FWIW, America's Test Kitchen consistently recommends the Mercer bread knives as a very good budget bread knife. I have one and find it very satisfactory. There is no reason for a bread knife to cost $100.00+.

Recommendations on bread knives and opinions on Wusthof double serrated
I have a mercer and it's solid. Can't say if it's better/worse than the victorinox or wustof, but it was like $30.

Secret Santa BIFL kitchen gift under $30?
A good chef knife. Mercer makes a good one for $14. Not sexy, but very competent. A good 2 qt saucier pot. I like Tramontina. The peeler everyone mentions. Super Kim can opener. Surprisingly great. Super compact. A good wok, or a cast iron or carbon steel pan (likely used).

What’s a small upgrade you made that ended up being way more impactful than expected?
I've been using a Mercer 10 inch bread knife... Made in Taiwan. Bought it off Amazon

Best thing to buy for $100
Second this. And truly sharp knives are a major quality of life upgrade. A cheap knife that is properly sharpened is better than a high dollar knife that is dull. If you want a budget BIFL knife rec, I’d plug a Mercer forged 6 inch chefs knife. Any forged shorter chefs knife will be good. Forged blades hold edge longer and have more weight so they feel very nice in the hand. A short chefs knife would be my top pick as a do-all knife for the home cook. If you do bread loaves or large pieces of meat, a straight blade slicer knife is great IF it’s sharp and is pretty much useless if it’s not. It’s a more one and done solution rather than buying a new serrated slicer every time your current one gets dull. Straight blade steak knives are great as a basic small job knife that pull double duty rather than paring knives, which are harder to use a steak knife than a steak knife is as a pairing knife until you’re doing really delicate work.

Is there anything you're convinced is "the cheaper the better"?
Our Mercer bread knife was the cheapest knife we have ever bought and our favorite. Time to get the rest of the Mercer set I think!

What have you used the most at home these two years?
- A robot vacuum is 100% worth the investment. I have the Roborock s8 maxV ultra and it auto empties after vacuuming plus washes and dries its mop and after mopping so I don’t have to do much apart from changing the water every few days. - A sweater/fabric shaver. I have the plug in version so I don’t run out of charge mid sweater. It’s by the Beautural brand on Amazon. It hasn’t given me grief and works well. - Stainless steel cookware by Misen. I bought these about 5 years ago and they’ve held up beautifully. They seem pretty similar to All-clad and significantly cheaper at the time. - A kitchen knife set by Mercer. I have the M23500 Renaissance and it’s held up quite well. I don’t have to sharpen them quite often and they’re comfortable to hold and use. They come in a glass case which is pretty to look at too, although if you had young kids you wouldn’t want the knife set out on the counter.

Very thin and great for veggies. Generally herder k1m or harner xhp for paring but not seeing them in stock Ashi 180mm petty isn't in stock right now either Could maybe get a nakiri if you do lots of veggies but the santoku will already do it. Anything sharpened by Myojin is a great choice as well but hard to find in stock. Don't overspend on a bread knife unless you want it to look cool. Gude looks great but it's the same steel as the $20 mercer. Also consider fillet if you do lots of fish and boning for meat. North arm knives does a very nice magnacut fillet.

Knife set for Christmas
It’s tough to buy knives as a surprise. Every brand is designed differently and a knife that works for one person might not work for another. It’s hard for me to imagine buying a knife without being able to hold it and sit with it for a while. Also you absolutely don’t need to pay for a wusthof bread knife or honing steel. And my mom has that carving knife and I hate it. The better thing to do would be to just buy one at a time. I’d start with a 10” chef knife. I’ve had my $25 Mercer chef knives that I got from the restaurant supply store for 20 years and i love them. They sharpen easily and hold an edge well. Plus they can go in the dishwasher. And I find them pretty comfortable for long days of chopping. Not that there’s anything wrong with expensive knives, and wusthof are great, but how it feels and performs for the individual is more important than how fancy it is. As for storage, my preference is a magnet strip on the side of a cabinet. It’s very customizable and your knives are right there when you need them. I don’t like rooting around through drawers for knives unless they’re stored in a roll. And I find blocks to be clunky and ugly.

Knife set for Christmas
I did way too much research on what knives to buy a couple years ago, so I'll try to save you the time. 8" Victorinox fibrox chef's knife Mercer millenia paring knife Mercer offset bread knife (Also, a farberware 5" santoku because we already had one that was banged up and it is my wife's favorite knife. They're only like $10, it's a terrible knife, but she loves it.) I also got this [magnetic knife block](https://www.bespokepost.com/store/marcellin-acacia-wood-magnetic-knife-block?b=true&b=&a=m_google_PLA&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=plas_a&utm_term=152350&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=811844291&gbraid=0AAAAADy8S1qLeg9T61BGUw3Kre6kgbfDX&gclid=Cj0KCQjwgpzIBhCOARIsABZm7vHUH6vKBdW8ax-aU3u6wEMbnPCCkuSoIecjAmTJv3MOBWcjxBykKjgaArQ7EALw_wcB) because i feel that the slide in knife blocks dull the knife and probably get gross inside. My kitchen doesn't have anywhere for one of those on the wall magnetic strip knife holders. I have zero complaints about any of these items!

Stopped buying cheap versions of everything and cooking actually got easier
The most important thing is a good knife. So many people buy a $30 KitchenAid set from Walmart and never sharpen them. Buy yourself a $15 10" Mercer, a 400/1000 grit whetstone, and a ceramic honing rod and learn how to take care of your knives

What are some actual BIFL kitchen items?
our lists are very similar, except my knives are Mercer (except one chef's knife is Zwilling, that was one of my best thrift store finds!), my Dutch oven is an antique Crescent Ozark, and my dinnerware is just the cheapest real china I found in Costco. No metal trim or printing so it can go through the dishwasher.

What is the best kitchen gadget under $100 that you own?
Mercer is a great budget Japanese brand for knives. They are recommended by a lot of culinary schools. Also, I have to say a lot of the Ikea 365+ stuff is great. We’ve had pots and pans for nearly 20 years that are used daily.

Henckels Kitchen Knives. I finally replaced my chef's knife and was very surprised in the difference.
You can purchase Mercer knives off Amazon that are just as good as your knife for a fraction of the price. Mercer makes good knives. Their forged knives use the same steel as the big name German knives, which isn't anything special as far as knife steels go. If you look at their more expensive knives, for the same price, you can find smaller knife manufacturers that use much better steel. Many culinary schools require their students to purchase Mercer knives.

Need a set of kitchen knives that will last a lifetime? Any recommendations?
I purchased a set of Mercer Genesis knives a la carte to get the knives I actually want/use. They're made from the same steel used to make Wusthofs. Mercer knives are typically used to outfit culinary students because of their performance/durability. I've had mine for 7 years without any issues or noticeable wear, all they've needed is occasional honing.

Important Kitchen Essentials?
Measuring cups and spoons I prefer the metal super cheap ones from ikea. 10” chefs knife was never my cup of tea. I like Mercer knives cause they’re dirt cheap and I don’t care if they get scratched from my electric knife sharpener. 10” non stick is my go to pan. I also like to get a 40 pack of Chinese take out containers for prepping and a good set of glass Tupperware from Costco. My most underrated buy was a small trash can to keep on the counter for scraps.

Need a set of kitchen knives that will last a lifetime? Any recommendations?
Agreed on the recommendation. Thumbs down of the dishwasher. That’s how you make it not last a life time. This is my workhorse knife and I have the Fibrox filet too. For paring I love the wusthof bolsterless. Press knife is a mercier. With those 4 knives you can do anything.

What’s one thing you bought once and it’s still going strong years later?
Good cast iron, and carbon steel cookware. A good carbon steel wok can last a lifetime. A good kitchen knife...doesn't have to be fancy, a good 8 inch chef knife from F Dick, Dexter Russell, Mercer (about $10-20). Anything from Tom Bihn. The bags are very thoughtfully designed, and tougher than chrome/timbuk2 bags. A really good screwdriver. Grace screwdrivers and Bahco are my favorites...with Vessel from Japan being a new fave. Vitamix. Robocoupe...refuses to die. FWIW, a Breville food processor died on me after only 2 uses of intermittent use.

Have never seen this happen with a Wusthof knife
Both Henkle and Wusthof forged knives are made of the same steel as Mercer forged knives. It's nothing special as far as knife steels go. Shun knives tend to be a bit brittle, not helped by the thin angle some are sharpened to. I've a few different Henkle, Wustohf, and Sabatier knives. None of them perform all that much different from Mercer knives or even a couple Old Hickory carbon steel knives I use. I guess a couple of my Sabatier knives are carbon steel. I do prefer carbon steel over run of the mill stainless steel. Ultimately, it's what feels good in your hand, not what feels right to someone else. BTW, if you're breaking a kitchen knife, you're using it improperly.

Have never seen this happen with a Wusthof knife
I actually have Shin, Wusthof and Hinkle knives, but I use my Mercer for the heavy duty stuff. They just work, and I don't cry when they break.

Have never seen this happen with a Wusthof knife
Stamped?!!! Surely u mean forged. The only way to get forged knives is to search for forged knives on Amazon. You will find Mercer brand forged knives for very reasonable prices, under $40. Mercer is a well-regarded company. Many culinary schools require their students to purchase Mercer knives.

Looking for an extremely sharp chef's knife?
Any knife worth its salt is sharp out of the box. Get a Mercer to start with. Inexpensive but high quality, stays sharp long and can be reshaped without drama. Learn to sharpen that, then consider something more luxurious if you still feel the need to upgrade.

I have this collection! For four years only one plate chipped and it was totally my fault. As long as you’re not lobbing them into the cupboard they hold up just fine!

The Best 'Buy It for Life' Products, From Essential Cookware to Tough-as-Nails Clothing
I would not spend the money on Shun. I would get Global or Mercer or one of the German bands if you want to splurge. Also the sharpening kit from worksharp is way more user friendly for first timers. I disagree with the safety razor too. There are a few I would rather use instead. Like a vintage superspeed. There are things I do agree with, like rice cookers, moccamaster, printers, cast iron and bookbags. I think the article makes commissions when you click on the link so some of the best BIFL items are not included since they don't have commission or are in the used category.

Good affordable knives
If I were you, I’d pick up an 8” chef’s knife, and a 3” paring knife from either of the following: Victorinox Fibrox Chef on sale for about 30, max 35 Mercer Renaissance for less than 50 Messermeister various 8” offerings. Wusthof and Zwilling basic knives are lackluster for their price. And I’ve never used a Dexter chef’s knife so I have no opinion. Do go buy a magnetic strip or counter top block that has good airflow and some sharpening equipment, that will keep any of the mentioned knives sharp for a lifetime of normal use.

Good affordable knives
As always, get the individual knives you'll use instead of a set. Chef knife, paring knife, and serrated bread knife are my 3 reccomended shapes. I also really like using a Chinese cleaver. Victorinox is the go to budget brand, but there are others like mercer at that same price point. Zwilling and Wustof German knives are the next tier up Finally Japanese knives and beyond. Take care of your knives, don't dishwash them or leave them in the sink, don't use glass/stone cutting boards, and sharpen before they get dull.

Recommendations for glass food storage and knife set please
Mercer, Dexter-Russell and F. Dick all make great usable stuff. Victorinox tends to be a good combination of quality, value, ergonomics and availability. Most cheaper kitchen knives try to look like something more expensive at the cost of actual performance. Commercial Cutlery is meant to work, and be comfortable to the user. All go, no flash.

Recommendations for glass food storage and knife set please
I agree on the victorinox knife. I really like my mercer slicing knife. It's good for bread, cakes and roasts. If you cook a lot of fish or large cuts a meat, a boning knife is awesome.
