The Best Kids' Clothes Right Now?
We get most of our child’s clothing from Target, specifically the All in Motion line. Believe it or not, they’re pretty hard wearing. He always outgrows them rather than them wearing out or starting to look ratty. We do get more expensive outerwear, we like the kids down jackets from Bean, and some Lands End jackets and Patagonia jackets have been very nice. We get him decent shoes, Merrells and Xeros. Typically we don’t spend a lot on clothing for him because he grows. I can’t praise the target clothes enough. We have a hyper 11 year old boy that’s always moving, always riding bikes, playing outside, nerf battles with neighborhood kids, getting dirty, all the things. Those clothes really hold up.

Good leather ankle boot for hiking/snow/rain?
rockports are comfortable but you're right about the build quality concerns - they tend to use more glued construction rather than welted. for waterproof leather ankle boots that'll last, check out danner's trail models (like the trail 2650) - they're resoleable and gore-tex lined. also, merrell's moab 2 mid waterproof are a classic for a reason. if you want to step up, salomon's quest 4d gtx are incredibly durable. the key is looking for 'goodyear welt' or 'stitchdown' construction - it means they can be resoled when the sole wears out, which makes them truly BIFL.

Old post but I can say with confidence...its kind of all over the place. You should try them first if at all possible. I have 8 pairs of merrell shoes. Some are a bit narrow like the Alpines, some slightly narrow but work if size up like trail gloves, moab wides run a bit long but perfect for my wide feet, the wrapt run big. The fit and feel on my feet of Alpine 11.5 is similar to wrapt 10.5. All that said, even though sizing can get confusing, I hike and walk a lot. They make the most comfy and dependable/long lasting shoes Ive owned which is why I have only been buyinh merrell past few years for all activities, all times of year.

Keen makes solid stuff but might be pushing your budget a bit. For $90 you're probably looking at more like Merrell or Columbia territory. I've had good luck with Merrell Moabs for muddy hiking - they're not the prettiest but they'll handle slush and light snow just fine. The waterproofing holds up decent too

Start with a single piece upper if you can find it in your price range, leather or synthetic, because fewer seams make life easier when everything is wet and gritty... stitched on panels just trap muck and the seams give out fast you know and it all goes wrong Cheap glued uppers crack once the mud dries and the whole boot starts peeling apart so watch for that Look for softer rubber outsoles with real sipiing even a slight pattern helps on black ice while the hard plastic stuff feels fine in the shop but may as well be glass outside A gusseted tongue keeps out slush far better than any waterproof badge printed on the side and most membranes give way quickly under constant flex Merrell Moab Rove Thermo or the cold weather Keen Targhee versions sometimes drop near your budget on clearance they are not miracles but they survive rough winter use better than the usual bargain boots

Wool coat for the Northeast
Multiple coats, and also the appropriate layers under each coat. I can get away with my packable down jacket at 0° in MN if I've got a wool sweater with a long sleeve shirt on underneath it, but I'm chilly at 20° if I'm wearing a long sleeve t-shirt instead. And insulated shoes are a requirement. I've been rocking the Merrell Encore Ice mules for the last 5 years and they are a game changer for my winter comfort.

Wolverine cancelled Cushe which were my all time favourite shoes so them have used Merrells for at least three decades. My work-shoe (surgeon) are the Leather Jumglr Moc. They look terrible but are fantastic, comfortable and waterproof. Everything I need. They last like 8 years of constant abuse before needing change just because they look terrible then not because they break. I'm on my 3rd pair of Merrell Moabs and really like em. Got them on sale the last 2 times (one at outlet for Black Friday and another later via Slickdeals when it popped up online). You're not going to get much more time out of them, though. Soles are wear-down items. May be able to swap out your interior sole with something from Dr. Scholl's or similar.

Long motorcycle trips, long hikes, backpacking through multiple countries for weeks or months, general daily wear, running and exercising, at work. God knows what they’ve been drenched in. I live on the side of a mountain and hike A LOT on rough rocky trails, and around here you can wear hike shoes/ boots anywhere. My daily use shoes are Merrill hikes that come both e ankle. It takes me 7 to 10 years to wear down the tread. if your using them over 20 miles a week short of $500 Italian boots you aren't going to do better.

Be mindful of mobility too. If you currently or in the future could need to climb inside vehicles etc, you may want a style on the thinner or lighter side. Red Wing Thorogood and Danner usually get the most praise. I spent a while last year looking for something similar and settled on Keen. I was pretty happy with what I saw from Ariat too. When I worked in a plant where I walked the floor constantly, a few of us settled on a particular style of Rockport at the time as the most comfortable and longest lasting. I put two pairs through hell and still have them 15 years later. That’s not to say they make them like that anymore but don’t be afraid to branch out to different styles than a boot too. Personally for that, I’d look at Merrell, 5.11. Maybe try on some police or military style boots or shoes too. And if you haven’t already, Amazon try before you buy is a huge help.

BIFL *women's* winter boots, waterproof, arch support, please
I totally feel your frustration with the women's vs mens boot quality difference, it's maddening how often this happens. For New England winters with your specific needs, I'd suggest looking at Danner women's Mountain Light or Mountain 600 boots - they're built with the same quality standards as their men's versions and have excellent arch support without any faux fur nonsense. The full grain leather holds up incredibly well to winter conditions and they're resoleable which makes them truly BIFL. Another option worth considering is Vasque women's St. Elias or Snowburban boots, both have solid arch support and come in narrow widths if that helps with the wobble issue you had with Keene. Since you mentioned overpronation support specifically, you might also want to look into custom orthotics regardless of which boot you choose - I actually went through IAMBIC (they do custom fitted shoes and boots) for my foot issues and the difference in support was incredible, though they might be outside your timeline since custom work takes longer. For immediate options that should work well, I'd also check out Merrell Thermo boots or Salomon women's winter hiking boots, both brands tend to have consistent quality between mens and womens versions and good arch support built in.

Prolonging the life of shoe soles
I am very hard wearing on shoes and, being on a limited budget, I generally wear the same pair day after day. I also walk a lot. My current pair of Merrell's have lasted me two years and are only now starting to show wear. I reckon I'll get another six months to a year out of them before they'll need replacing. Personally, I call that a win.

Admittedly the Merrell trail runners are my step sin's shoes that he grew out of so weren't the first choice I would have made but they're doing pretty well so far. Having trouble finding quality sneakers
Honestly people here saying they need time for the shoe rest is crap. You get what you pay for until a certain extent. Designed shoes that cost a lot really suck. You can get new insoles but the sole of the shoe can’t be replaced. I’ve had crap shoes and really good shoes. I’d buy DC or Etnies and they would never last and wear out in 6 months to a year depending on use. The soles would wear out. Of course they were relatively cheap. A coworker recommended something along the lines of Ecco brand. I bought a pair and they have lasted me 2.5 years and still have plenty of life left in them. My DCs cost $65 and my Ecco’s cost $200. I also bought a similar type of Ecco for $130. Same goes for work books I bought cheap work boots that would last a year ( around $100) and then I bought a nice pair of Merrill’s ($180) and they have lasted me years and still have plenty of life left.

Merrell. Specifically the Bravadas for me. I’m currently wearing mine, I took them on a backpacking trip in the Gila last year and they went through the river over 100 times. They are now my garden center shoes where I work. It’s been the full season and I’ve yet to wear a hole in them or wear out the tread. I fully expected them to be trash by now. I put between 6~9mi on them daily. Going strong since February. Love Hokas but my coworkers that wear them with me on the job have already worn through them. For a shoe that costs over a hundred, sometimes two hundred dollars I think I will stick with my $90 set.

I buy Merrell's barefoot/zero drop shoes and they're pretty sturdy compared to stuff from Vivobarefoot and other no name brands. I'm a big fan of the barefoot style of shoe and I run on a treadmill at the gym in them 5 days a week, plus I wear them as my daily shoe. They tend to last a solid 6-8 months before they start falling apart. Realistically, there's no such thing as a performance-focused shoe that's built to last anymore. But even if there were, you'd still be getting stuff like the soles replaced every 6 months anyway. Merrell's stuff is very affordable and I really can't complain about anything with them. Would recommend for sure.

I would also recommend Merrell for this. I worked in a restaurant for a couple years as a cook and I wore some not so pretty black clog-like shoes from Merrell, but they were fantastic. They have some very impressive non slip soles that you should check out. Merrell are mid tier quality when it comes to footwear, but will beat out most sneaker brands for durability. If you have a slightly wider foot you they will fit you very well.

Merrels are great because they have hard vibram soles that are durable for rough wear. Virtually any other sport shoes has softer synthetic sole-that feel super comfy. But, wear out quickly. I really am frustrated by most running/hiking shoes as I wear soles flat in less than a year

Best wide shoes for heavy folks (8+ hours standing)
Rather than looking at running shoes, try looking at hiking/trail running shows- these will typically have a higher density/sturdier sole because they are designed to move over rough terrain for long distances. This will significantly increase the longevity of the shoe compared to running shoes which typically have lighter, lower density soles and are really not suited to prolonged use by heavier individuals. These hiling/trail running shoes will also typically have wider options available, some brands to look out for; Garmont, Scarpa, New Balance, La Sportiva, Merrell, Danner, Salomon. Avoid On Cloud like the fucking plague, they are terrible shoes. Also, combine the shoes with a good foot bed, like Superfeet, which will offer much better support and help regulate posture and foot alignment, increasing overall comfort and longevity of the shoe.

My birthday is coming up. What brand of Sandals should I ask for?
Totally depends on what you are looking for. I live in tevas and birks but a lot of people think they don’t have enough support for long term wear. My mom really likes chacos which have a more supportive sole and very adjustable straps. My dad likes keen and Merrill sandals which fit more like shoes, have a shoe sole, and come in versions with a closed toe which can be good for various situations but still have the ventilation of sandals.

funny. My goodwill brother B&W printer is one as well. And I recently got the vitamix kaboodle. I buy merrells. They last forever. I buy good power tools despite rarely using them so they'll last decades. I buy name brand led bulbs and they last eons. I can't think of anything else on the spot but seriously it pays sometimes to get good stuff. Especially if you can get it secondhand in good condition. I guess one example is my honda crv I got 5 years ago. Still drives like new and I only have tires coming up at 50k miles. And it will drive on for years.

All the soft mesh ones gonna get worn out at some point. Especially if they don’t have some kind of solid construction around the hard wearing areas. My Merrell Moab Speed 2 Vent 2K SE hold up great, since the mesh is not that fine and they have a more solid construction in the important places. It’s nicely airy too. -no paid add lol-

I prefer trail runners. The usual failure point is the sole-glue coming apart. Nike acg used to be good but very overpriced. Merrell, Salomon are excellent... Right now I'm wearing a pair of Adidas terrex free Hiker 2 - gore-tex (last year's model, sold a huge discount because less popular color combo.... Msrp 180, bought for $90) Incredibly comfortable and supportive with cloud foam... My daily shoes are overpriced red wings. (shouldn't prices have dropped, when they moved production overseas??)

I have tried many brands, and Merrell shoes are the best I have ever worn. I have been buying them for 20 years. They are so comfortable and supportive right out of the box and my feet are never tired. I walk about 15 Kms a day for work. Also the Vibram soles are extremely durable which means that the tread can take an extreme amount of punishment before any wear appears.

I’ve been wearing Merrills for 30 years. Usually whatever the most recent Moab model is. I get one pair waterproof and one not waterproof because the waterproof ones are not forgiving at all in any kind of warmth. It’s not that I have brand loyalty. It’s just that they fit my feet immediately when I put them on. I have taken a new pair of Merrills out of the box and immediately done a 15 mile hike in perfect comfort. I’ve tried others, but it just makes sense for me to stick with what I know works.

After years in heavy leather hiking books that were way too heavy and rigid for the type of hiking I do, I changed to the light weight trail-type boots. I had Merrell MOAB (excellent), North Face Vectiv (rubbish) and now Adidas Terrex Free Hiker (excellent). These are not BIFL though.

I think the Merrell moab 3 mid is one of the best value boots out there. If you want something better and also more expensive than check out Hoka Kaha 2 GTX. They are the most comfortable boots I've ever worn.

Sneakers or boots for daily wear.
I do a ton of hiking, fishing, bike riding, and I'm a very large man. I've found Merrell Moabs to be the most comfortable shoe that I can get 2-3 good years out of. I find them on sale for $60 and buy a few pairs. I also have toe pain, and these are the only shoe to help me with that. I have only bought Moabs for the past 10 years, and I will continue to only buy Moabs until they stop making them.

Mine are the standard non-waterproof. I wanted "quicker" drying which honestly still dries really really slow, but for the humid weather here works much better. Also its the trailrunner version FWIW, I needed to keep my overall weight light for when I hang it on my pack and wear flip flops.

Their Moab 2 mods are incredible, I’ve had zero of the described issues. You have to remember that when you ask a sub on Reddit you’re more likely to have people who have something extreme to say click on a post. That includes people like me who absolutely love a product, and people who had a terrible experience. Not bad to post about, but you also have to look at actual reviews and try products out ultimately if you like the brand. Almost all brands have “fallen off”. This happens for a ton of reasons including corporate greed, but people also complain incessantly about price to the point where often times corners are cut instead of raising costs. This sub is literally built in a way that makes that something to complain about, but the general public would just stop buying shit and go to the cheaply made competitor in a lot of cases. That’s what’s happening with Merrel. They aren’t just trash now, they compare just fine to other boots in the price range. I recommend the Moab 2’s like I have. I’ve heard the 3’s have a defect that cases the toe cap to peel off, although some people say they have slightly better ventilation and a bit more toe space. I can only speak to my 2’s which are my fav boot I’ve owned so far. I’m actually buying a second pair soon just to keep in better condition for work and school.

I have a pair of Merrell Work Boots with the synthetic toe protector instead of steel. I love them! I wear them all Fall and Winter. Mink oil keeps them waterproof or nearly so and they are still in great shape after 3 seasons of wear. Bashing on Merrell seems to be the thing to do and I wouldn't try to downplay anyone's negative experiences but I have only had positive ones. Don't think Merrells are BIFL but the pairs I've had for hiking, these work boots, and trail running have been comfortable and durable.

Moab Speed 2 leather. Highly recommend. Comes in shoe and boot. Very durable, well made and comfortable. I’ve got the shoe. Tried on a few different sizes, some of them the tongue pushes in your foot, some don’t. You can tuck it in a way that doesn’t bother you.

I'm backpacking through Asia 7+ months in so far on Moab 3s and it's been fantastic. Still some tread left but it's getting to needing being replaced in the next couple months at this pace. Unfortunately BIFL it is not, but even with Merrell's quality supposedly going down on the 3s, I've had good experiences with them after lots of hikes, and many full submersions and drying it in the sun. And lots of alcohol sprays to get rid of the funk, yuck.

A Store in my town was closing out with a 40% discount on all their inventory. I picked up a pair of Moab 3 and a pair of mid ankle hiking boots, wife got a pair of Keens for total of about 220$ - was awesome. Everything item was marked down from 130$ to like 70-80$ each. Should be good for awhile!

Not exactly, and nothing that consistently holds up the way Merrell used to - across different lines and styles. That said, I have found that a combination of different brands will fill certain voids, like Teva for water shoes, sporty sandals and insulated slipper-shoes; Ecco and Vionic for casual/street shoes; Dansko and Earth Shoes for more fancy work pumps, etc. For hiking and trail scrambling (I used to run, now I scramble, lol), I rely on old Merrells and occasionally a truly ancient pair of Vasque leather boots that have been re-soled a few times.

These three were all from reputable vendors however I did accidentally buy a knockoff pair of Merrels from Poshmark one time. Interestingly enough, they started out great and were possibly even more comfortable than the original pair I was replacing, but the soles peeled off in less than a year.

I was skeptical to buy Moab 3s, but Ive been wearing mine daily throughout SE Asia. It’s been half a year of wear around cities and mountain treks through Taiwan, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam and still going strong. Reading the reviews I expected a short life for these but it surprised me pleasantly. Hope I didn’t jinx the durability now after singing its praises. Submerged and rinsed fully 3 times and air dried in the sun. Not BIFL though but it’s quite durable.

I have the waterproof version of this and have to fully agree!! Got mine pretty dirty few times ran through washing machine and then air dry by a fan…. Brand new after good wash! And the waterproof aspect of ones I got does add some weight to the shoes but they def don’t ever absorb water. I’ll def be buying Merrill again!

I wear through shoes way faster than anybody I’ve ever heard of.
I also go through them quickly too. I blame my habit of rotating on my heels and the balls of my feet a lot, which is a weird habit I think I picked up in Muay Thai. I've found that Vibram soles work pretty well. I got some minimalist, support shoes - Merrell Trail Glove - which have vibram soles that have lasted well. I have hiked and disc golfed in them for three years. The toe is a bit worn bc I drag it sometimes when I lunge, but that's it. I'd look for Vibram soles, personally. I also like the brand Merrell in general. Pricey, but not stupid pricey and everything I've gotten has been solid quality. I have their hiking and trail run stuff too.

It depends on what you are doing in them. If you are doing construction and need steel toe i would go with the Georgia brand AMP LT wedge steel toe boots. They are made well, affordable, and once you break them in they are very comfortable. I used a pair of them in hard labor on foot walking 20,000 steps a day for 3 years and I still have them today for home things. If you are doing warehouse and you just want comfort then Id say to go with any sort of comfort shoes you can and not boots since you are on concrete and boots are meant to give you support and structure on unstable ground like soil. I carry mail now so I use hiking boots and I exclusively use Merrell Moab in summer and Thermo chill in winter. Screw the people on here who talk bad about them they are great boots. I get mine from REI so they are not counterfit. #

What’s a good BIFL boot for snow, comfort, warmth, width & traction?
This local kids consignment shop...I actually get store credit for the stuff I consign but there is a cash option as well....the store credit is a higher percentage though and I always find great stuff for my boys there and just use my store credit to pay....feels better than buying new when kids outgrow stuff so quickly.... I've found some awesome Mini Boden/Hanna Andersson/other quality kids brand clothes for them, as well as like new kids Merrell shoes in several sizes (there's a Merrell outlet nearby so locals go crazy there when they have big end of season sale)...I love it and they always have unique clothes no one else is wearing. I also see people selling BOGS on Facebook marketplace....just be sure to photograph the bottoms of the boots as well as the other parts if you are posting there...I always look for that picture if I'm buying used footwear to make sure there is still tread.

I really enjoy the Merrel Jungle Moc shoes. They would last you many years, have solid arch support and easy to slip in and out of. Merrell website always have sales. Wear them for a bit indoors first. Merrel has pretty good policy about taking returns if you haven't worn them.

It looks like the parent company’s stock has slid a lot in the last several years. Merrell is their money maker too. The designs haven’t changed in forever so they’ve either changed suppliers or materials to reduce their cost structure. But based on a recurring theme of crap quality in a short period of time after being known for solid products for decades, I think they shouldn’t be on any BIFL list anymore. I’ll just keep rocking my sixteen and six year old pairs instead.

I have a wicker laundry basket that might be older than me (41). It was mine as a child, I took it to college, and it's still in my bedroom now. Merrell hiking shoes that I got for a trip in 2006. Still comfortable to wear for a light hike. These aren't old, but they're great and will last a long time: Aldi neoprene duffle bags. I have one in each color. They're a knockoff for the Dagne Dover one. High quality, sturdy zippers, holds its shape. My kids and I use them for vacation packing and overnight bags.

Merrell Moab 2 on Amazon is my go to. I walk around 10k steps a day on linoleum floors. Old Walmart shoes would get me about 3 months. Both pairs of the Moab 2 shoes I've bought ( 2022 and 2023) are functional still, I did have to replace the laces in month. The older pair are a little flattened our in shape, but the soles of both are still good, I drag my right heel a little as I walk, which kills most shoes, but those lasted me the longest this far.

Yup, exactly this. I'm rocking a nondescript Merrell winter coat that I scored for $90 on sale, 13 years ago. I'm a lifelong western NY gal and it's currently 14F in the finger lakes with a windchill of -4F. With the appropriate layering, I took my dog for an hour-lonf walk this morning and I was toasty (except for the exposed parts of my face). I work at the university and see kids in Arcteryx and Canada Goose...you do not need to drop several hundred dollars on a name-brand jacket. Really over all the unnecessary consumerism. Layer, layer, layer!

Agree. But I’ve noticed that Merrell sneakers are the only pair that have lasted our son an entire year. We were doing Altra and I think Brooks, and neither of those made it 4 months before upper failure or sole delamination. The Merrells are still serviceable enough to be donated when he outgrows them.

So Merrell shoes aren't that great?
I think Merrell are pretty good, had the Moab2, and recently bought the Moab3 GTX. The only negative thing I I'd say is that the sizing is really small, bought my regular size 9.5uk and it probably fits as a size 8uk. Luckily their customer service was petty good and exchanged my shoes, but I picked size 10.5 UK and fits perfectly. So I advise to buy a size, ize and a half bigger. No complaints about the shoes so far, pretty solid
