  Metabo from that era are really good. I have a couple of Metabo drills from around then. Never give up this thing for some cordless nonsense. Though that burn damage does look kind of sketchy. I would probably put a new power cord on it if it were mine.

  Came here to say this. Used to use it as a coping saw when doing crown molding and its is awesome. Still have one.

  Cordless Tool System: Bosch, Makita, or something else?

  Not the first to say it but if you work on cars at all Milwaukee is the only answer. I only do simple stuff on cars because I like to DIY but now that I understand what works and doesn't on them it's Milwaukee only. I don't think anything is going to serve you wrong here. I like the small form factor of my Makitas (black, no idea what model), but they aren't big old work horses like the Festool I bought my cousin or Milwaukee impacts or anything like that. They're just really small and 18v. It's perfect for me who isn't afraid to dive into projects but isn't like buildings decks. I've had them for years and will probably for many more. The only bad thing I used was some 18v old Dewalt a friend had (it was all plastic, no metal parts like some I've seen). That thing wasn't even as strong as most 12v. That's probably why they have 20v now. While I'm not in Europe when I was doing a little research for my cousin's gift I stumbled across "Metabo" who I think is the manufacturer of green Bosch stuff and many other brands for certain things. You might want to look into them as a way to get more bang for buck in EU.

  I’ve always been a Makita guy without knowing anything about the corporate side. My tools always just felt more solid and durable than coworkers’ Dewalt or Milwaukee. Then I saw this in r/construction.

  Which tool brand ecosystem would you invest in for 2025 and why for the occasionally frugal DIYer?

  as a professional cabinetmaker / constructionjoiner Bosch (BLUE, dont get bosch green its dogshit) 18v battery powerd for every usual non-woodworking specific thing, drills, hammerdrills, sawzalls, jigsaws etc. also compatibale with a lot of great manufacurers because of 18v allience Fein (compatible with Bosch 18v if bough with AMPSHARE batteries) for Multitool (even though new Bosch one is definitly better) Mirka or Festool for sanding Otherwise for anything woodworking specific as well as vaccumes: definitly festool. Best tracksaws, routers, good orbit sanders. For rough timber frame carpentry: Mafell For drilling in concrete: Hilti FOR BEGINNERS OR HOBBISTS: Metabo: good overall, usually quiet inexpensive, made in germany, outstanding quality for price and features, practically bosch for hobbists. Also has 18v allience named CAS, would recomend to anyone looking for tools. Bosch: pretty expensive, but got everything you need. especially the basics. Practically last forever, especially corded tools. Has all the cool stuff form the specialist brands in blue. Milwaukee: Only worked with 12v dirlls, but seems pretty good in quality. Cons: made in china, no compatability with anything, just as expensive as bosch, more expensive then metabo. IMPORTANT: Get corded tools (with exeptions). You dont need everything battery powerd. Especially stuff that you use a lot in one secession, or only very few times. MY SUGGESTION: 12v or 18v Drill by Metabo (or just following hammerdrill with regular attachment) Bosch GBH 2-21F for concrete drilling, drilling big holes and driving large screws, great drill, lasts generations, pretty cheap aswell Old used festools Tracksaw TS 55 or 75 (corded) random old orbit sander, from above mentioned brands otherwise just get the stuff you need from the manufacturers i mentions "as for begineners" STAY AWAY FROM: Ridged, Ryobi, Makita (kindof), mayby dewalt (feels wierd and cheap) as well as hilti, hitachi (ex hioki) and mafell. just to expensive with practically no compatability
