  What’s a purchase that’s not fun, not flashy but now you swear by it?

  Try a microplane grater instead. Can use it for other stuff like parmesan or zest also. I find garlic press makes small but long pieces of garlic.

  Looking for a kitchen gadget that’s actually worth spending extra on

  My go tos: -digital scale. Get the combo cord/battery kind -portioning scoops. Volrath makes a burly ambidextrous one that will last for generations. The numbered size is how many scoops go into a quart, so a #16 is 2oz (and perfect cookie size, imo) -Microplane. The flat, no handle one is the easiest to clean -Mandoline. I like my Japanese style benriner. They come preprogrammed with a taste for human flesh, so be respectful and be careful -blender. Kitchenaid and vitamizx are fantastic home versions that look nice, but I swear by my waring bar blender. Two speeds, ugly, but an absolute beast. -stacking bowls. I'd would recommend metal, as there's no chance of chips and knicks and whatnot, and they're durable af -Silicone spatulas. Softer they are, the quicker they tear, so get the firm ones. Kitchen supply stores like cash and carry have the red handled ones that are durable af, but they will stain if you use a lot of spices. Worth it Unless you're using a gadget several times a week, stick with more universal tools; kitchens infrequently have space for all the bits and bobs that end up getting used for one project and then forgotten about. Mono-taskers, as Alton Brown likes to call them,aren't the handy solutions they're billed as, and as long as you have a good knife, a good pot and skillet, and a few essentials, you're golden

  The zwilling knife with the yellow handle. An electric grinder for fresh pepper without needing to use a mortar and pestle. A microplane grater. A potato masher that’s just a zigzag instead of the stupid little holes that I have to clean. I like to bake, so I’m also gonna throw in a good set of cookie sheets that don’t really warp as much

  What's a purchase under $50 that has genuinely improved your daily routine?

  Oxo garlic press https://www.walmart.com/ip/Good-Grips-Garlic-Press/12246218226 And a microplane. I keep ginger in the freezer and grate it with the microplane without thawing, and this press is so easy to clean and strong enough you don't actually have to peel the cloves to use it!

  I promise you—get a microplane. Grate your garlic. Don’t fuss with cleaning these little holes. A microplane rinses out perfectly under running water, and then you wash with soap

  What’s a kitchen item you bought once and never had to replace?

  There's no reason to replace a still functioning microplane. A home cook could easily get five or more years out of one depending on use.

Stainless steel cookware; carbon steel cookware, cast iron cookware \[any non-stick alumin(i)um crap is a no-go\]; 2. full-tang quality kitchen knifes (I like Wüsthof) \[I personally like a small chef's and a Japanese style\]; 3. steel kitchen tweezers; 4. Microplane FINE graters (I doubt these will be BIFL, but mine have been going for years.); 5. Nordic Ware oven trays in various sizes.

  A microplane for grating garlic and ginger. Me and my partner cook a ton and idk how we ever lived without it. Chopped garlic is just not the same and takes forever.
