  What BIFL products have bought you your time back?

  Serviceability is the real time saver because if you can actually get a screwdriver on the thing you can keep it going instead of treating it like a rental. Which is why it matters. If a machine does real work, the motor is usually what dies first so a proper brushless setup is worth it, it saves time, it also keeps you from binning good kit. Anything that deals with water should have a stainlees tub because plastic basins warp, crack and start leaking long before anything else gives way... even when the rest is perfectly sound. Miele dishwashers with the stainless tubs fit that bill and keep on without fuss. And skip the smart touch panels because every time they replace a physical button with a membrane sheet that is another failure wearing a friendly face.

  Appreciation for our Miele G 2150 SCU dishwasher

  I ended up here because I needed to replace a part on my Miele g 2572SCvi, which I thought was probably around 9 years old (came with the house when we bought it 4 years ago). Turns out it was made in 2007! I was able to find the part new on their website. Getting it open was easy (bottom panel), as was rooting around in it to see what the issue was (pressure regulator, error code f24). Fingers crossed I've solved it with a €40 part and it goes back together well, but otherwise 18 years is pretty good for something that's used sometimes 3 times a day. It's a shame to read others saying that quality has decreased, but the ease of repair and parts availability would probably still convince me to get another, even though the equivalent new model is like €1500.

  I have two CKCS (so very long fur and a lot of it) and we just got mieles.  I previous had LG machines and detested them. Damaged clothing, some loads not feeling overly clean, washer got unbalanced often.  Meanwhile my new Miele can and has washed “hand wash only” wools with no issues, felting or damage. Only downside is they are a little smaller than I’m used to but that’s not a deal breaker.  A few times a year they have a sale where you can get a decent discount or a free 10 year extended warranty.

  When to wash wool socks?

  I usually wash every two weeks to a month.  No need to wash after every wear.  Once they feel or look dirty, then wash. I use Miele Wool Wash for all wool items (socks, sweaters, pants, etc) and then hang/air dry. I always wash at 105F.  I want water warm enough to re-liquify any body oils so they are washed away.

  Unpopular opinion: The 'BIFL' mindset is becoming a luxury most people can't afford, and that's by design.

  There are some objects, especially consumer electronics (like tvs) where it’s hard to get bifl item. For home appliances: research their warranty and repair services. Here in Germany we have companies like Miele, Siemens, Bosch, etc that have a good customer service and usually provide spare parts for at least 10 years. That shows you a certain dedication a brand has to longevity of their products.

  yeah, LG are probably the most reliable brand of washing available in the UK, with the exception of asko, ebac and miele, but they are very expensive in comparison. it's strange that some people on this thread are giving advice to avoid them.

  We've had a C3 since we bought our house in 2013 that has powered through 2 shedding ass dogs, a kid born 5 years after we bought it, and my profession which is literally in the dirt, and the only "damage" it's suffered is the paint on the cord wind button has worn down and one of the power mode lights is out. Our now-7YO uses it as part of her chores, which she does angrily, and the Miele survives her fits. Another comment said the bags last a long time, but they don't in a house like ours!

  Also awful luck with Bosch. Washer, dryer and dishwasher. Same issue as you, all about 5 years. Bosch is overrated. Another vote for Miele, especially dishwashers. Fisher and Paykel were bought by GE. Their stuff has since been integrated into Cafe or Monogram depending on the appliance.

  I've never in my life had a clogged vacuum with any Sebo or Miele. And I'm a professional cleaner by trade. I've seen it happen to people who are very careless with their machines but never had it be a personal issue. I own the British equivalent to the Rainbow vacuum aka Hyla. I've tested them both and there is really no comparison. The Miele C3 out performs it in just about every category. And the features it can contend with are subjective imo. More of a users preference than a performance one.

  I love Miele! If you're ever in NYC they have a showroom there (and other cities but I can't remember which ones) and you can check out/test out their different vacuums (and other products). I grew up with a Miele canister vacuum and wanted to get one again as an adult but wasn't sure which model I liked best so specifically extended a work trip to be able to go by the showroom to check it out. The salesman there was super nice and walked me through all of the features without being pushy or annoying. And yeah, my childhood one lasted well over 30 years. They really do last forever and are worth their cost.

  I don't know, I recently got a Miele to replace the Shark that I bought in 2014. There was nothing wrong with it, really. Rubber on the hand grip was starting to degrade, I guess. I replaced the cord once. But it worked great. Emptying the cyclone canister thing was easy. It was easy to grab and clean up messes. But it was just too small; we bought it when we lived in a little 2-br condo, and now...it was like mowing an estate lawn with a 16" black-and-decker push mower. But suffice it to say that I got my money's worth out of the thing. I like the Miele, of course, but I'll admit that it's a whole thing to get out and carry/drag across the house. So now I also have a cordless dust buster and a robot vac (the latter of which I highly recommend). But man, when I'm actually using that Miele cannister, it is indeed a pleasure. But I could have bought 50 years worth of Shark stick vacs for what I spent on that thing, so it's certainly luxury.

  Yes! I have been through several Dysons…. The original one that came out back in 2007, lasted forever, should have gotten it serviced again and kept it. Followed by Dyson Animal upright, Dyson stick, etc. all gone in 3 years. Have a Miele C1 now and I’m obsessed.

  Trust me. I get it. I will break out the cordless vacuum too for minor cleaning each day. But when I'm doing my weekly deep cleaning my Miele makes the house smell much better and fresh. I can instantly smell a difference in air quality after I'm done. There are tips and tricks to help you with this if you struggle with cleaning. Just Google them. Best advice I can give is to try and break things up and do a little each day. Buying a lot of microfiber cloths helps a lot too. I buy them by the roll.

  We have both a Dyson and a Miele . Had the Miele coming up to 10 years now , it’s still going strong . But it does get tangled a lot. We have three cats , 2 of whom are long haired shedders. The Dyson was a bit of a game changer for the little tufts of fur they leave after they’ve been playing/mauling each other. It’s light and portable and easy to use for both me and my arthritic mother. The Miele is a big heavy stick vacuum that needs to be plugged in. The Dyson is a convenient light battery operated thing. It also helps give my mum agency and allow her to keep doing things. She never used the Miele in 10 years whereas now she uses to Dyson nearly every day. Both struggle with long cat hair , but the Miele moreso that needs to be cut free every few weeks with a razor. The Dyson tends to clog under the roller where it spins up. I think that’s just an expected thing when you have lots of carpets and lots of pets

  Second this. I was extremely fortunate to pick up a barely used Miele Silver Moon in 2007 for $250. They sold new for $1500 at the time. I jumped at the chance and have been pleased ever since. It is old enough now that some of the plastic parts are losing integrity. The automatic cord winder does not work and I have to deal with it manually. There are other minor, cosmetic issues. But as a vacuum, it still works great. I have never experienced anything better.

  Sometimes you can get lucky with Dyson. Its performance is not even remotely equivalent to a Sebo or Miele though. And no vacuum manufacturer compares to Sebo's warranty. You might be surprised at how much your Dyson is missing, especially if you have pets.

  A quality vacuum that has a bag like a Miele, Sebo, or central vacuum. They last much longer than any crap you will buy from Dyson, LG, Samsung, Shark, Bissell, or Tineco. Miele and Sebo actually have a warranty and keep spare parts in stock so you are able to fix something if it breaks. You should think of a vacuum like any appliance. It should last at least a decade.

  Miele. They are expensive, but they are built to last forever and many of their base models still have zero smart features. You just press the button and it runs. Look specifically at their Classic line, not the fully integrated ones, as those sometimes have more tech hidden away. Skip the Bosch headache altogether.

  My 2025 BIFL products this year, how about you?

  Wera 1/4” wrench set and 2 screwdriver (1 ratchet). Burberry duffle coat cotton/rabbit fur and trench coat cotton/reindeer leather trim. De Buyer carbone plus frying pan. Liebherr fridge.  Replaced all my batteries with Eneloop rechargeables.  I helped my parents choose a Miele washing machine this week to replace a Samsung. I went ‘round to fix a worn gasket and found it had worn away because the drum was warped. I didn’t bother trying to find out why the drum was  warped. Oh I also found a Knomo leather bag for my mother.

  What’s the BIFL item that you love but everyone around you thinks is ridiculous?

  We've got two Meile canister style vacs from the early 90s. They'll probably last forever. Grew up with a Rainbow from the late 70s. My parents got it as a wedding gift and it lasted til I was at least 22. Hell, it still worked but my girlfriend and I go it her a modern bag less vacuum for Christmas just because they're simpler to use. Point being, there are a handful of great brands of vacuum cleaners that can suit our individual needs.

  When my Miele starts to smell like dog, I replace the bag & filters. The smell goes away after that. This is even after vacuuming up dried stomach cancer vomit. (Sorry, horrible reference point, but it did make the vacuum smell bad until I changed everything out.)

  My Miele has a little pressure relief valve on the handle in case you need to adjust the pressure while vacuuming. When I first bought it I thought, "lol, who would ever need that," cranked it up to the highest setting, and nearly ripped the carpeting in my shitty apartment off the stairs. I'd never owned a decent vacuum before. I bought it because of the vacuum AMA. Still works like new 10 years later.

  Dysons don't have a better suction. Bagless don't have better suction, and even lose suction over time. First time I used my bagged Miele after the (corded) Dyson I couldn't believe how marketing screwed me for so long. The Miele is twice more silent and has twice better suction, and keeps it.

  Can you return it? Seeing some highly concerning things about it on Reddit. Also you don't want stuff like an autoemptying base or fancy tech features since it's all gonna be another point of failure. Best bifl option is going to be a miele canister vacuum. If you absolutely have to have a cordless stick vacuum, get one from whatever tool brand you use (like the Ryobi one). Much cheaper than Dyson and batteries will be interchangeable and readily available. No stick vacuum is bifl.

  Miele owner here. For a few months, we used the Wi-Fi-only feature to run at 3 AM every day. If you are the type of family that puts the dirty dishes in the dishwasher as they accumulate, it's great. No one needs to be the "last" person; just keep adding as you go. However, the app sucks at letting you know when the detergent disk is empty. So after about 2-3 weeks of everything being great, you'll open the dishwasher to find dirty dishes with baked-on food. We found it better to have someone manually start a load because then you'd easily see when the detergent disk is empty BEFORE it causes problems. We've uninstalled the app as nothing we consider broken is getting fixed after 2 years.

  Hi, domestic appliance repair company owner here. More and more brands are incorporating features such as WiFi, but you can choose to not use these at all (in fact most people don't!). Here's the list in terms of reliability and long-term spare parts support: 1. Miele 2. Fisher & Paykel 3. Bosch (or Neff for integrated versions; both brands are owned by the same company and identical inside) 4. Samsung 5. Beko Miele and Fisher & Paykel are "luxury" brands and you should expect it to last 20+ years of real world use; much longer with the odd servicing requirements (replacing spare parts when they fail). Miele, as an example, we've repaired machines over 30+ years old and spare parts are still available. I hope this helps!

  Nice - this set up does semi fix my main “fine dust sandblasting the bearings” complaint. In the case of the CX1 the airflow is basically: floor —- cyclones —- cartridge filter —-motor —— exhaust HEPA. That’s much closer to a bagged layout, just with a rigid pleated filter instead of a big soft bag. The “self-cleaning” is nice too, but it is mostly shaking dust off the surface. The really fine stuff still slowly blinds the cartridge, and because the surface area is tiny compared with a bag it clogs faster. You still need to clean or replace it occasionally or the motor will end up running hotter. So I’d put the CX1 in the “one of the few bagless that can compete with the bagged” bucket. If someone absolutely wants bagless and is happy to keep on top of filter maintenance, it is a decent shout. If they just want something that’ll last 10–20 years with normal-human laziness, I’d still point them to a bagged Miele or SEBO.

  It really comes down to three brands, but the big requirement is that they all use bags. Bagless units eventually kill themselves because fine dust bypasses the cyclones and grinds down the motor bearings. A bag acts as the primary filter to stop that happening. If you have carpets, the consensus splits between Miele and SEBO because they have powered electric brush heads to dig the dirt out. Miele is smoother to use, but SEBO is built like a tank and easier to repair yourself. If you mostly have hard floors, the Numatic Henry is arguably the most durable option. It’s basically just a commercial motor in a hard shell with no circuit boards to fail. It just lacks the powered beater bar for deep rugs.

  I think paying a bit extra for a Miele is worth it And tbh I will make the argument for some of the “gimmicky” features on them. It being connected to wifi is amazing for no other reason than that you can get a push notification when it’s finished instead of a stupid chime going off. Less aggravating and makes such a difference in terms of actually remembering to get the laundry if you’re busy at the moment when it finishes. I also really love the TwinDos detergent dispensing that some Mieles have. The detergent itself is definitely a racket to it’s absolutely a luxury feature, but it’s honestly really nice never having to fuss with the like slimy detergent bottles

  Miele looks compact, but you can put 15 lbs of clothing into it. LG says you can put “7 towels” in it. (This is from when I researched washers about seven years ago.) It turns out seven towels weighs 15 lbs, so despite the petite size, it holds as much as a large LG. American washers expect clothing to be “fluffy” and European washers expect loading to be compacted. I’ve washed 15 lbs loads for the last seven years and my Miele has needed no servicing. I am super happy with it.

  Bosch moved their manufacturing out of Germany. The old machines were workhorses, but I haven't heard the same about the recent models. Miele's still stand up and are highly servicable (which is the only way that a high wear machine like this could possibly be considered BIFL).

  Finish sells a "dishwasher cleaner" - it's in a bottle you put in the top rack and run the unit. It literally ate the seals on my Bosch. The bottom seal on a 3-year-old Bosch crumbled in my hands. Switched to a Miele - love it. Loved the Bosh units I have owned (4 total), I probably was the one killing them with the cleaner.

  Our Miele washer is plenty big for a family of 4. Maybe you'll have a few extra loads during the year due to the smaller capacity, but it's negligible for us since we try to wash only similar items together. Also, when we bought it a few years ago, they had an offer for a 10 years warranty instead of 5 (iirc), which tells me a lot about the quality of the appliance.

  We’ve had our Miele dishwasher since Jan ‘21 with only one issue. The control board went out 2 months before the extended warranty was set to expire. It does not connect to the internet, but does have an electronic interface. Ours has a built-in water softener that helps leave our glassware spotless every time. You can even look up your water supplier’s grain per gallon number and input that via the settings for the water softener.

  Anecdata: I have an LG I’ve had for ~10 years and I love it. I have the twinwash and I would cry having to go back to having one washing machine.  I put the Miele stacking set in my tenant’s house because it was the only thing that fit and was ventless (no way to run a vent from where it was). It’s been fine as far as washing goes—I’m thinking you could fit at least a full if not a queen comforter in the washer, though I doubt anything that big would get dry in the dryer. However, it had a problem after like 3 years of use where the latch broke right off the door during washing because the door frame is plastic. I was able to replace the door myself, but it cost several hundred dollars and was a pain in the ass. I’m not sure how likely that is or if we just lucked out, lol

  I can’t tell you anything about the washing machines, but when my dishwasher broke I asked my building’s super. And his answer was they all break now, but the LG, GE types will break in 5-7 years and the Miele ones will probably last for ten years. Nothing is built for life anymore but the European built brands will last longer than the cheaper ones

  Speed Queen does make a front loader. At 3.5 cubic feet it certainly big enough for a queen size comforter. Additionally, Miele, despite its small size, washes quite a bit of clothes. I believe they're biggest washer holds 9 kg(just like the Speed Queen they are designed to be stuffed nearly full). That is surprisingly close to the maximum you can fit in a modern LG. Also, the LG washing machines with the turbo wash 360 are the highest rated machines. The general rule is never to buy an appliance from a company that makes TVs or cell phones. But, the one exception is LG laundry. They are at the top of their game for all the mass market brands. Miele and SQ are designed for 10,000 loads. Whereas, most modern washing machines are designed for roughly 2,500 loads during their lifetime. If you really want a BIFL washing machine make sure you look at the Miele Little Giant (30,000 loads).

  I detested my LG washing machine with a passion. It was absolute trash.  Replaced it with a Miele and I’m so much happier. Also has a proper wool cycle which is super important to me given how much wool I wear. I left all the wifi stuff off cause it wasn’t useful for me and it’s not been an issue. I haven’t tried washing any blankets that size but I feel like they would fit?

  Loving our Miele washer / dryer. It’s plenty big enough for a family of two. An unexpected bonus is that our clothes get way cleaner than they used to. We’re only two years in with them but no reliability concerns yet. They seem rather solid. Heat pump dryer is really cool. Dries well and doesn’t require a vent. You save electricity both because the dryer is more efficient but also because the dryer isn’t pulling outside air into the house.

  I need a new washing machine

  Another vote for Miele. They are spendy and require additional electrical work to install (the washer needs a 240v plug just like the dryer) but worth it in my view. If you have dry cleaning bills from work clothes or specialty items, you may be able to launder them in a Miele because its delicate cycle is actually delicate, so that’s a potential cash stream that could help pay for it. Personally if I had a set budget I’d rather buy a Miele washer with no dryer and just line dry everything than buy a cheaper washer/dryer set.

  Can't comment on specific models since pricing & models vary from place to place.. but corded & bagged are the priorities imo, and a spinning brush nozzle to help pick up hair from the carpet can help a lot - doesn't necessarily have to be the same brand/come with it, you can buy them separately - just make sure it's the correct size connection. Miele, Sebo & Henry are all good, solid choices. Bags act as another filter which helps prevent rubbish getting to the motor, so bagged machines *always* last longer than bagless. They're also more hygienic and easier to clean. Cordless vacuums don't have the same suction power as corded either, so they simply do not clean as well. Great for convenient spot cleaning in between using a corded vac, but not for whole house cleaning - unless your whole house is hard floors, I guess.

We’ve had our Miele for 12ish years and cord frayed, button wore out, wand electrical broke and…..that’s about it. Each time was about $100-150 in repairs but that thing sucks! In a good way.

  I’ve had a lot of issues with LG. I just replaced mine with Miele’s and I’m super happy.  They wash wool like a dream too (important cause I do a lot of knitting). But they are pricey.  Speed Queen is often recommended but it was not an option for me.

  In the military we had professional machines from Miele. They cost a pretty penny, but are definitely worth the cost. In my youth I worked in a similar situation to the one you describe, there were also had Miele professional washer and dryer. A top loader will wash worse than a front loader. The agitator will never compete with the rolling action of the front loader. The clothing will need to be washed on 60 or 90 degrees Celsius. Use pre wash and extra rinse. Obviously removing the worst of the feces and/or urine before loading the washing machine helps a lot. Ideally you’d get a 8-10kg capacity front loader professional machine. And not overload the machine. More importantly one need to be strategic and buy clothes, sheets etc. that can be washed at 60 Celsius or higher.

  Miele definitely - they are tested for 20 years daily use, my in laws still have theirs from around 25 years ago, and although it looks awful (white plastic has turned creamy/brownish), it still runs and works well. We have had our newer model 3 or 4 years now, going strong.

  I’ve been a big fan of Miele. My parents and grandparents have used some appliances over fourth years in some cases. All my appliances are Miele and the quality is excellent, not just the longevity but also the output exceeds expectations. Baking results were much better with my Miele oven then my AEG. Washing results much better then my Samsung and I’ve heard the same reactions from my friends compared to their previous brands. Regarding refrigerators I’ve heard just a few reviews about sub zero but all where excellent. GL

  Buy a washer/dryer without a motherboard

  Look for a 24-in European style front load machine that is stackable. They will fit in a small closet. You can get them even as an all-in-one heat pump option that doesn't need venting (But, I wouldn't recommend it). Miele is a well-known brand. But, Lowe's sells the Bosch 24-in washer and dryer.

  Why are gas range brands like Viking, Thermador, and Bosch so much more expensive than other brands?

  These are open to debate. I’d say Miele dishwashers are very good but high end Gaggenau and Thermador are as good. As far as ovens Gaggenau is better than Wolfe which is probably better than other brands. For fridges I own both a 36” French door subzero and a 36” French door Gaggenau, both less than a year old. The Gaggenau is MUCH nicer and more refined. Not even close.

  $5k budget might be kind of tight, but it could possibly be doable. I bought kitchen appliances in 2019 for around $5250 from Best Buy’s kitchen/bath retailer Pacific Sales. The only items I didn’t buy that were floor models were a GE Profile 5 burner cooktop (this was $1100, I think), and GE Profile Microwave and trim kit for about $425. The GE Profile fridge (which I honestly wouldn’t buy again) was $1500, the GE Cafe built in oven (which I adored) was $1800, and the Kitchen Aid dishwasher was $450. I ended up selling the house in 2020. The fridge was really the only disappointment as the water line got clogged and leaked out the bottom fridge because it was cause a layer of ice to form in the bottom freezer (at the time it was a known GE fridge problem with no fix other than to have the line cleaned). In my new house I did have to buy a Whirlpool fridge from Costco and I have been happy with it. It replaced a Kenmore Elite (which was a rebadged LG) with a bad condenser. I won’t buy an LG appliance product. My big kitchen splurge was a Miele dishwasher, I bought the highest home model available that was being discontinued from Pacific Sales for $1500. It is absolutely worth it. I went back there to buy the same or similar Kitchen Aid dishwasher I had in my old house and I hated the new third row set up and Miele’s just worked better. I had a GE Profile traditional in my old house for 14 years before I replaced it (it came with the house so it was closer 16-17 years old really) and honestly it was still working but my kitchen was small and I gained more space by putting in a cook top and a built in oven. I would buy another GE cooking product. I also bought a new GE Profile microwave for my new house.

  Are you sure you are comparing similar machines? Here in Finland Miele is about 20-30 % more expensive than Bosch in the same product range. Difference is, that Miele doesn’t offer products under 800 euros. Those 400-500 euro/quid Bosch machines won’t probably last any longer than 300-400 euro/quid Chinese machines. Washing machines are buy once, cry once products. You can go cheap and replace it every few years or buy a good product now and don’t think about it for the next two decades. In some cases it might even make economically more sense to do the former, but for me it’s about the trouble of doing it and I also want to be more sustainable. That said, there are magnificient Bosch machines out there, but they are definitely not 2-4x cheaper than equivalent Miele.

  Ventless dryers come in 2 types: condenser (heats air, condenses water into a tank/drain, faster but less efficient) and heat pump (recycles warm air at lower temps, super efficient & gentler on clothes but slower). Both are safe; Miele/Bosch are the most durable options.

  Heads up. You will get 2 very different opinions because some people’s experience is with the new heat pump condenser dryers and some people’s experience is with old style resistive heat condenser dryers. The old dryers were expensive to run and did not dry well. The new heat pump dryers are way more efficient. Dry well. Do it pretty damn fast. That said the new style is harder to clean out built up of fuzz (a task that was simple in the OG condensers) and because they are new, there remains some concern about longevity (not talking 2-5 years. Talking 15-20 years longevity) Keep in mind that the heat pump dryers are mostly an European product so look for Miele or Electrolux. Miele will last longer but is pricier. Source: former American living in Europe now. Currently staring at my AEG (an Electrolux brand) washer/dryer stack.

  😆... you know that you should not dissassemble the machine, right? It is one of the things that are forbidden in the guide and insurance company might not be keen on paying any accidents that has been caused by 'fixing it yourself' or 'cleaning the condenser by dissassembling dryer to pieces'. And regarding the filter problem, only few models beside Miele has proper filters. They get minimal to none shit to the condenser. Definitely fixing the problem that I have from HAIR clogging the condenser. You are talking about filter quality? You cannot replace the one with plastic mesh that is the only filter in most available models. And you should not add additional sponge filters as you like... sponge filters such Miele has seems to be available in few Siemens/Bosch models.  You obviously do not know about the current market, why bother to comment? :D

  Top tip if you have the Meile dryers, I use the Hoover to quickly clean the secondary filter in the door, saves having to unclip it. And the condenser foam filter can be rinsed, squeezed out and inserted damp and it will dry out in use.

  Heh, are there any available second hand? They work great (particularly the T1 heat pumps), and I don't see why anyone would be getting rid of one if they needed to install one to begin with. And to address your original question, I wonder if you could cut a piece of open cell foam and add an extra layer of filtration to another dryer, if that was really important to you. Personally, I'd just go with a miele.

  I would definitely keep the washing machine, if it does its job. If it jumps too much check if it's level - maybe it has adjustable feet or sth like that. Or the bearings are worn. If you buy a new washing machine in may last something like 5 years, and usually because all the machines are so "eco" they do not do a good job. The wash cycle lasts forever and the goal to minimize water usage means your clothing is actually not rinsed properly. As you guessed the new machines are full of electronics and useless features that are prone to breaking. Buy a new machine when the old one really breaks.

Unlike modern consumer/prosumer vacuums, the Oreck Commercials don't try to be everything to everybody, with all kinds of heavy attachments. They're very lightweight and built durably to do the one task.

  *Cookware: when buying new, make sure it's induction-compatible. Triple-ply stainless, cast iron, magnetic stainless. No new aluminium, no non-stick. The last good deal I saw on triple-ply was Henckels; I suggest not being brand-oriented on cookware. * Appliances: strongly consider an induction stove, heat-pump dryer, and heat-pump hot water heater, if buying those items. Reduced fire risk, long term lower costs. Miele is where I'd start with the dryer.

Miele or Sebo canister vacuum I think I’ll go for a Leesa mattress for my next- check the Wirecutter lists and mattress sub Room & Board furniture was by far the most recommended for longevity. There is often couches secondhand on Facebook Marketplace if price is an issue. If you enjoy thrifting, getting secondhand decor, small kitchen items, etc can be really fulfilling.   [BIFL Request] Small apartment vacuum. Preferably able to hit carpet and bare floor, and be small, those are my only requirements.

  I forgot the password to this account and haven't been on it in years and I was looking back on old posts and it's funny cause I did end up getting the Dyson, and I actually didn't have any complaints, eventually the battery wore out and I got a replacement but it worked really well for my old apartment. That being said, my mom got a Miele, the most basic model and when I clean at her place I love using it. It has so much suction that if you crank it up to the highest setting she can't even pick it up off the carpet lol. She didn't realize it wouldn't come with a rolling brush type attachment and bought a non manufacturer one that spins using suction since there's no power at the end of the hose but I never feel the need to use it. Her apartment is 2 bedroom 1.5 bath with a balcony it's much roomier but the vacuum is great and when the time comes I will probably go Miele.

  First of all, I’m really sorry you have to go through this! Depending on your budget, I recommend either a Miele or Sebo bagged canister vacuum cleaner. Both are amazing, made in Germany. For sofas, try to go for real leather. Avoid big name furniture chains and go with local stores… the big name ones try to pass off blend/combination products (where part of it is real leather and part is fake). Avoid nonstick pans like the plague. The *only* upside to those is short term convenience.

  New Vacuum needed and suggestions?

  Been doing some research on this lately and I'm coming down on two different - almost opposite - sides of the fence. Either like a miele or sebo bagged canister vacuum. Seriously, people rave about these things being absolute tanks and cleaning better than almost anything else. OR A stick vacuum from ryobi so i can use the batteries that already go with my tools and from what ive read the ones from tool companies are a bit more robust than their fan company counterparts... Not exactly BIFL but my thinking is the ecosystem could be bifl if they keep things standardised and whatnot.

  We went with a Meile Triflex as we’ve had Mirle canisters in the past and they were rock solid. We now have canister and a stick for the house. Stick for quick duty work. Canister for big top to bottom house cleaning.

  New Washer/Dryer… 38yr old finally quit

  Speed queens are nice, but they're still a bit heavy duty.  For most, the front load LG sets usually have a model or two each year that are decent.   The Miele and Bosch stuff can be nice, but not sure if the price of admission is worth it.

  IMHE only real BifL vacuums are canister vacuums, and more specifically Miehle canister vacuums. I’ve never heard of a Shark or a Dyson or whatever lasting more than a few years of regular use.

  What products used to be well built back in the day but now are low quality?

  Any of these products people are talking about have quality available, it’s just a little hard to find and a little more expensive. Brands though, they absolutely sell out and reduce quality all the time. Craftsman for instance used to make great wrenches. They reduced quality and price, and now Mac tools fills that niche. Kitchenaid used to make great dishwashers, now they suck but Bosch is good. Meile washing machines are fantastic, but finding them can be a bit tricky.

  Agreed! Miele and Sebo are both excellent! Sebos come with a 10 year warranty (when purchased from an authorized dealer). Mine has lasted 15 years and still works great!

  Is this worth $350 still? Found out I'm gonna need a new one and of course they recommend a $1500 brand (speed queen). My current is a maybe 10 year old kenmore elite and only issue is the bottom is starting to rust out.

  It's worked out many times for me, I have never bought a new dishwasher or washing machine. I live in a country though where there are people who fix them up and give you a warranty (free replacement only) for 2 years post sale. Never needed to use it, my current washing machine is going on 7 years now without issue and the dishwasher at 5. Already thousands of dollars better off since they are German Bosch and Miele

  Rec on quietest and most bifl frontloading clothes washer (and dryer)

  I have the Miele T1/W1 and I find them relatively quiet compared to other washers and dryers I've owned. sometimes the spin cycle on the washer can be a bit loud, usually if it has a tiny load or a huge load in it. if you check them out in person, don't stress about their small size--I can put a king-sized quilt through mine with no issues. they also seem to cause less wear and tear on my clothes. I use Miele brand detergent, and only have to buy the color detergent about every 10 months and the white powdered detergent about every 15 months. notably, the Miele dryer doesn't need to be vented--it uses a different system.

Might seem silly, but “his and hers” Victorinox Swiss Army knives, I use mine almost daily and have gifted many as wedding gifts. You can get them engraved, which is fun. Or, ask for Leathermens, this is another I gift but to couples who are more outdoorsy.

  Got so tired of my old cheap range.

  I've had a wolf, my last range was a blue star. Now, I have a Miele induction. The induction blows the other stoves away. I can literally heat 1 L of water to a boil and a kettle in less than a minute. Plus, it is super easy to clean. I can literally have the stove cleaned within 30 seconds. Wipe it down with the blue Scotch bright, spray grease cutter and wipe it down. Wipe it down another time with glass cleaner... Done. If I was to clean the open burners on the blue star it would take nearly half an hour.

  These are the most recommended vacuum cleaners on Reddit (r/VacuumCleaners VS others) as of Jan 2025

  I’ve used both [Dyson V15 and Miele C3](https://www.reddit.com/r/VacuumHelp/comments/1ksxqo0/best_vacuum_cleaners_2025/). The Dyson V15 is amazing for quick daily cleanups, especially with the laser that shows hidden dust (we have hardwood + rugs). The Miele C3 Calima is quieter and better for deep cleaning hard floors, but struggles a bit on plush carpets. I keep the Dyson upstairs and the Miele for bigger weekend cleans.

  Does anyone else feel like it's impossible to buy quality stuff anymore? Seems like every single thing I buy falls apart absurdly fast. I try to get quality stuff, but reviews are all fake, star ratings are bought... how do you avoid buying junk?

  An astute observer and author, Paul Fussell, wrote about "proleward drift". A company makes a thing. It's high quality and reliable. They, however, want more sales. So, they have to cut corners on making the thing so it is more affordable to the masses. Then the beancounters and marketing geniuses (being sarcastic here) want it to be even more affordable. So, an item goes from being high quality and respected to Walmart so millions of "proles" (proletariat) can buy them. Examples include Macy's department store, Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, etc. What I do is I have subscribed to "Consumer Reports". They are a non profit and have people who know how to review stuff. You might disagree on some points, but overall, you get a better idea of what to think about when buying something As for clothing, it's best to go to the retailer carrying it. Some people may say a 60$ pair of pants can be a crap shoot, but I can absolutely guarantee that a $10 pants is not going to be all that great. Look at the fabric. Feel the texture. Try it on. Look at the stitching. Is it loose with long stitches, or are the stitches tight and even? Look for stains and rips. Are the buttons on securely? Does the zipper work? There are companies that are doing just fine without going proleward to Walmart, such as Miele, Viking, Henkels, etc. You have to stop impulse shopping and take time to do your homework.

  Does anyone regret spending more for SpeedQueen?

  Bought the speed queen after a higher end GE died in 7 short years - a huge chunk of rubber broke off the boot, so that is weird. AND worst is my bras keep getting destroyed.   None will be BIFL now. If you want longevity - look into Miele & AEG. If you want something mediocre (which I’m happy with at the moment) - look into brands like Samsung. It connects nicely with a designated connector - e.g. WW80T washer + SKK-UDW connector + DG52 dryer. Other brands should also have connectors to build a tower.

  I currently have a top of the line canister sebo (airbelt d4 premium), a bottom of the line canister Miele (c1), an older Kirby with a million attachments, a roomba and a crappy old eureka from 20 years ago. I use the eureka to clean my shop because it just won’t die. The Kirby is upstairs because it has carpet. I see a lot of crap on here about them. The door to door sales stuff sucks. But I honestly like it. It’s very heavy however, and would be terrible to lug up and down stairs etc. and they are overpriced. the Miele was our main unit for the downstairs (hardwood) we had it for about 8 years and it performed well. Has a ton of suction. I once even forgot to put in a new bag and ran it for weeks with no bag. Just kept thinking “hmm I wonder why this is making so much noise?” We have a bunch of rugs so I upgraded to the sebo recently. I went to a mom and pop vacuum store and asked a bunch of questions. The guy sold me on a sebo mostly because he felt like they were easier to repair and had a better relationship with the company. It’s very nice and well thought out with a super long cord and multiple attachments. I will say, the Miele has more suction. It’s now my car wash unit for the garage. I hate the roomba

  I bought my Miele Polaris canister vac in 2001 and it's still going strong. I've had to get the cord winder repaired, replaced one of the attachments, & the hinged top is broken off (it's now held on with velcro) but I still use it every day. When all my long, gorgeous pregnancy hair started falling out after I gave birth, the Miele sucked up the hair tumbleweeds without a hitch. Some people don't like vacuums with bags, but I don't want to empty a disgusting chamber of dirt. The vacuum cleaner repair guy told me this particular model with a HEPA filter was used to clean the downtown Austin post office after an anthrax scare in 2001. Can you tell that I love my Miele?

  As a four pet household a stick is for a quick clean and a bagged canister is the only thing I would recommend. Sebo and Miele make bagged canisters that are BIFL and pet worthy. Check out r/vacuumcleaners.

  Totally agree with you on the Miele canisters! I got one after killing a couple of cheaper vacuums (pet hair and long hair everywhere) and it's still going strong years later. It somehow never loses suction, even when I let the bag get embarrassingly full lol. Honestly one of the few household things I’ve bought that I’ve never regretted for a second.

  Shop vac are great for a shop but bad for a home. The vast majority don't have proper air sealing, they are huge and cumbersome, they can't properly clean any carpet. You'd be using the wrong tool for the job. The right tool is a sebo or Miele.

  I have a 2004 Miele DW. Finally giving us problems in last couple years. Cheap relay switch which I have replaced 2x w/ Amazon junk. and impeller occasionally needs a flick. Mid-1990s Sub-Zero (freezer on bottom). Repaired once. Otherwise, no issues.

  I agree with this list. I have a V15 detect and it is what I use 95% of the time. It is just so convenient to grab it off the charger and be cleaning up a mess 1 second later. However, I bought it expecting it to last 10 years, probably with a battery replacement along the way. If I were to own only 1 vacuum, the Miele cat&dog is what I would have bought based on reviews. Call me lazy, but I bet my house would be less clean if that was my only vacuum. Dragging it out, dealing with the hose and cord, getting an extension cord or moving the car if I want to use it outside are all small but annoying barriers to quick cleans. I can take my Dyson off the charger, suck up a little spill, even step outside and empty it into the trash by the time I'd have a corded vacuum ready to go. If you live in a small house or apartment, the battery Dysons can be your only vacuum, but I think for larger homes you still want a corded machine. For what it is worth, my other vacuum is a DC24 from 2004ish, and while I didn't expect it to last all that long either, it still works good as new. I replaced the hose once about 10 years ago after I tore it. I like how modular it is so it can be taken all apart and cleaned and parts can be replaced like Legos.

  Probably fair to also give consideration to how you use it too. I’ve had a Dyson (V8 I think) for several years with no issues. That said, I use it lightly because I have house cleaners come every other week so I’m not thoroughly vacuuming the whole house with it regularly. And I don’t expect a lightweight battery powered anything to last forever. If I wanted a tank for heavier use I’d buy the Miele everyone loves or something comparable. For what it is, the Dyson is very good.

  Yeah, I've got lvp and tile in other areas too. The shark I have doesn't have a bag, just the tank lift away style, but it does have hepa filters. I did a sweep with a swiffer pet and then ran the shark and it seemed to do a good job. But yeah, I definitely want to invest in a Miele or something for especially furniture. I thought about hiring a company once in a while too lol just to get everything deeper cleaned like you said

  Exact same experience. First purchase driven by BIFL as a celebration for a promotion. I wanted vacuuming after my fuzzy cat to be less involved/time consuming than the sweep, sweep again, vacuum twice, sweep method it had to be with my crummy $40 stick vacuum lol. I always had to recharge it halfway through, and it would only get about a third of the dirt on each pass. The Miele changed the color of what I thought was a clean rug after going at that sucker over and over again with the old method. I almost wanted to cry realizing how much time I'd wasted not wanting to buy a solid vacuum sooner.

  I have carpet in the bedrooms and LVP or tile everywhere else and area rugs as well. I have a power head with my Miele. I’d say the Miele by far does the best job cleaning and especially with filtering the air that goes through the vacuum. But it’s bulky and heavy and a bit annoying to maneuver. So I usually do a whole house vacuum with it once a week. The stick vacuum does an acceptable job for a quick clean on carpets and works well on hard surfaces. It’s always out hung on the wall. So like my sons eat toast and there are crumbs it’s like a 20 second vacuum job. But it gets used multiple times a day. But it’s not like I do the whole house with it usually. The robot vacuum does the worst job. It’s more of a novelty but I love the thing. It’s also running while I’m not home and it’s certainly better than nothing. Every time I run it the bin gets full. It will also “mop” which is more like dragging a wet rag around. It’s more like a swiffer for mopping up dust than really mopping. I have a cleaning company that comes every three weeks and does the mopping and a deeper clean of the bathrooms which I also clean at least once a week as well.

  I Miele corded vacuum is pretty much buy it for life. I’ve had mine for 15 years now. You buy the bags, replace the filters every few years. The motor seems to be extremely reliable. Stick vacuums are great, but good luck finding parts and a battery that fits them in 10 years.

My house is so much cleaner (floors, couch, heating radiator, etc) and my allergy symptoms (dust) are much more mild. Really recommend. I bought my C3 complete (for hard wood floors) on clearance I think for around 250-350. I don’t remember exact price.

  Miele appliances are definitely BIFL and their vacuums are high quality. But their warranty isn’t as good and they aren’t as easy to repair by the consumer. You can’t always get parts as models change more often. Instead of being a 10 year warranty across the board on all vacuums like Sebo, some Miele vacuums come with a 1 year, some a 2 year, 3 year, and their Home Care Line comes with a 5 year warranty.  Miele’s feel more luxury to use, Sebo’s are more solid and built for commercial use. That’s where it comes down to personal preference.

  I have one, they’re relatively expensive the USA compared to Europe, but I think they’re still worth it based on the repairability alone. I went down a vacuum rabbit hole when my shitty $200 vacuum broke down and narrowed it down to Sebo and Miele. I’ve had mine for a bit, and it is definitely the first “real” vacuum I’ve owned and have been quite happy with it. Just keep in mind it does require a little maintenance every once in a while.

  It seems you got stuck with a dud, we have a kid so we do a lot of washing. Don’t have a Miele washer but the dryer a T1 has been excellent though you have to really take care of it. I had issues with the vent so just happy you o go ventless. We also made sure to have someone nearby, though I think Miele offers alternatives if they sell equipment somehow outside their service area.

  I have no idea why he deleted it but here is the comment: Washer dryers - The closest to "life" i think you are going to get is either Speed Queen or Miele (of the two the Miele hands down) .  If you have the electricity to power a Schulthess, its probably the best machine one the world. Ovens - Miele Cooktops - Thermador Range hoods - Vent A Hood Dishwasher -  Miele - Bosch is acceptable but not its equal. For fridges/freezers -  it's probably either Sub Zero, Liebherr ,or Miele. Toaster the Dualit is hard to beat

  It's really powerful and robust. And it's RELATIVELY quiet for it's power imo. Plus the handling around the floor is very easy, at least much easier than the ones i've had before. Miele is also known for their quality and longevity, so at least for now i have zero complaints. Would defs buy again. And at the time i bought it, i wouldn't say that it was more expensive than any other alternatives, so i didn't feel that i am overpaying for the brand name. Also have a Miele washing machine. Also really really nice, but with todays prices on them i would never pay THAT much.

  If you can find a way to mount the big arse vac unit somewhere outside of mutual earshot- great. Then run pipeing or hosing. If not, just wall mount in room (far side from the disgruntled). Unit is not that loud compared to most vacs (which they seem to deliberately make loud, because loud means quality) Get the sebu power head. It is pretty quiet. Even the brushes. Maintenance. It is a bagged vacuum designed for a whole house system. But the bags are like 5 gallon bags. There is a filter on top of that that is removable and washable. I just change bags when full. Does not need to be done often. Sebu head. Little button. Twist the end cap off. Pull the roller out. Clean the hair. You will question your own reality and wonder if someone isn't running a barbershop while you are out. There will be a lot of hair. This thing gets it all up. Pull off hair. Reassemble. Done. Things here are built like tanks.

  I had an elderly neighbor in San Francisco give me her new Miele Red Star canister vacuum in 1999 as she decided she wasn't going to use it. It was around $695 from what I could tell. I've had it ever since then. Love that vacuum, it's a solid beast, I'm looking at it right now. I purchased a 2nd Miele canister vacuum about 5 years ago (the C2). Crappy and cheap feeling compared to the old Red Star canister.

  What is a BIFL item/product you recommend?

  I have a Briggs & Riley soft briefcase from 1992, no lie, bought for my first "real" job. It's 1000 dernier ballistic cloth and it will NEVER wear out. It was super expensive at the time (maybe $200?), but damn if it isn't something I'm going to take to my grave. Aeron chair if you can afford to recondition somehow, IME the hydraulics give out. If you're gentle on it and don't futz with adjustment too much, maybe it's BIFL. Would add: Viberg boots. Buy once, cry once. I spent $750 10 years ago on a pair of service boots and only now are the soles starting to wear. The uppers are still bullet proof. Can say the same about Russell Moccasins. In general any "artisanal" men's workwear/heritage brand (so long as made in USA/Japan/UK) is worth the steep buy-in so long as your tastes don't change. Luckily I've been wearing the same style clothing since I was 12. Le Creuset Dutch oven. Got it as a wedding gift 23 years ago, have cooked with it 4x a week since. RevereWare, will co-sign that. Inherited a few from my mother easily 60 years old now. Also All-Clad. You can't wear these out; It's impossible. Most Patagonia gear: It has a lifetime warranty, and they're happy to repair it for you. Their fleeces are pretty indestructible and won't pill (they do stretch a bit at the seams but only after a decade or so. Tools: Basically any plug-in power tool made before, say, 1995 is good to go. Just look for heavy metal cases at garage sales Things like old drill presses and bench grinders also will last forever. Miele appliances: Expensive, but easily worth it. We paid something like 3000 for a w/d set in the late 1990s and they were still going strong in 2018 when we sold that home. Zero maintenance (and was a plus for resale value). In fact I think we more than broke even; since then we've had the usual brands (Samsung etc) and they crap out at about 8 years.

  What is a BIFL item/product you recommend?

  I have the briggs and Riley Baseline carryon, medium roller (getting the Large/XL means you will be over the 50lb domestic (US) weight limit), and a cabin 2-wheel underseat roller. Great bags, although the wife wanted Away (seem nice so far, but not my preference). Tom Bihn backpacks. Took a week long trip to the tropics and the bag is a little unorthodox but it can hold a lot of stuff. And you have a variety of fabrics to select. Bose over hear headphones - great for travel and mine have lasted for awhile. For life is somewhat limited but its an electronic item that has a little tech, its a tradeoff. Sonicare toothbrush - It is like 10 years old on the original battery. Teeth are life. Agree with the Leatherman Wave+, good tool doesn't really excel at any one thing, but useful to have. Cookware: DeBuyer carbon steel country fry pan. I prefer this over cast iron. Demeyere Atlantis Fry pan - great steel fry pan. Allclad copper core (functionally similar to the d3 but I like the appearance of the copper line that shows through and I don't worry about cleaning it). I have watches. Mechanical ones are nice but as the old joke goes if you have to pick a watch to wear for the rest of your life what would you choose and no you can't choose your g-shock. NiMH batteries - where possible get rid of alkaline even if they are cheaper. They will leak and ruin your day and maybe even the device they are in. I choose Eneloops, the normal not the pro variant. Skip the LION batteries for now as they are 3.7v and require a voltage regulator to go to 1.5v, but if you need the 1.5v instead of 1.2v for the device meaning the NiMH won't work then the normal 1.6v lithium batteries would work. High quality LED lights - CRI should be 90+. They are a long term consumable but higher quality light is better. Knipex and Klein for tools. Knipex makes my favorite generalist pliers/wrenches. Klien makes great hand tools, I prefer the MiUSA options and use their linesmans for random things. Klien also makes a bottle opener, Wera does too and they are somewhat comfortable to hold. Clothes that don't have spandex. Spandex and elastic fail. I have had Patagonia fleece for 30 years and it still works. Randolph sunglasses - I just like them. Ray Ban 4140, they have spring hinges which means I can wear my spouse's and they have had theirs for 15 years although I had to buy new aftermarket lenses. Also discovered a french brand Cartel that also uses spring hinges, but don't know enough about this brand. Miele Washer and Dryer - gets rid of the vent ducting behind and they are solid if a little quirky. They canister vacuum is great. Converted the in-laws to this brand and they just went from the upright to the canister.

  French door (and side by side) is where most of the problems are (with ice dispensers on the front). If you are not particular about the style, you could get a two door (top or bottom freezer) with no dispensers on the door simple fridge. GE/Frigidaire/Whirlpool could work. Pick whichever model provides you the most functions. If you are looking for premium, Miele could fit that price range (Bosch if you are looking for Counter depth). Consumer reports lists LG, Miele, GE for bottom freezer; Wirecutter does almost similar.

  Vacuums: Miele or Sebo?

  I hear both are outstanding and I initially bought Sebo D4 but after waiting almost a month to receive it, I got frustrated and decided I wanted my money back. They countered with the top of the line version of the Meile at a significantly discounted price to make up for my trouble. I went with that and it is the best vacuum I’ve ever owned, by far. The other nice thing about the Miele is it’s  for more likely that there is a local shop.

  LOL - actually, upon closer inspection, after I cleaned out all the rice grain sized rust flakes from the collector at the bottom - IT STILL WORKS! The racks have rusted in places and the rust flakes are clogging the intake. The middle rack is no longer available so we bought a new Miele 😃

  Thrifted this about 20y ago.

  Krups makes extremely good and sturdy appliances in my experience. In the past my parents had a hand mixer by Krups for about 30 years until they got a new one from WMF which couldn't hold a candle to the Krups one. When we realised that, my sister had already adopted the Krups one (and still uses it to this day, another 10 years later). So they got a new one from Krups, and it seems to be as excellent and sturdy as the old one. Slightly different (but still sturdy and easily cleanable) design, but the same apart from that. Krups is my go to brand for small kitchen appliances. Miele for large appliances (dish washer, washing machine, dryer, oven). Miele has also not yet disappointed us in 30 years. They also have a good policy for replacement parts, that after an appliance is no longer produced, parts will still be guaranteed to be available for 15 years after the series goes out of production. And after that, they don't toss the extra parts, so you might still be lucky after that time period passes, so a call for a replacement part is not a bad idea.

  Your hair and cats bear no role in the decision process. There are many BIFL vacuums, but buying one is a question of floor types and you mentioned carpet, but do you have any smooth floors?   Miele OR a good quality shop vac works pretty well at a fraction of the cost. I was eyeing the Miele but a lot of professional cleaners I know all use shop vacs and suggested I try the one at Costco (DeWalt, $80 I think) before buying a Miele and I’ve been happy with it so far. My only complaint is the size/weight if your home has a lot of stairs. If you can find a vintage Filter Queen they’re pretty robust too, I found an elderly lady selling hers for $20 made locally in the 70s and it still works as well as I remember my grandmas did when I was a kid.

  R/vacuumcleaners Realistically it depends on budget. A good one that won't destroy the bank is the Kenmore BC4030 especially if you can get it on sale for <$200 but you can usually find it for ~279. Next best one would probably be a Miele cat&dog or Sebo but those are very pricey.

  Just bought a Sebo D4 last weekend. 10 year warranty (no paperwork required for service - they use serial number). Super long cord. Big bags. Great filter. Easy maintenance. Power head brush pops right out for cleaning and has no exposed bearings. It replaced a Miele C1 which is also good, but too small for our house and lacks a power head.

  Wow. You’re so cool. Your frugality is so impressive! We all aspire to be like you. My Miele range was $6500 brand new. A thermador spice been $5500 and included a free $1200 dishwasher. My parents have a Miele range that’s 27 years old and works like new. You always have the option of buying used/rebuilt. There’s a place near my house that specializes in this area. I buy appliances from them for my luxury rental properties. If you buy another piece of garbage like a Samsung it’s just going to break again after 6-8 years. Although, stoves aren’t complicated and can often be repaired with inexpensive parts.

  Miele fridge, dishwasher and clothes washer. 30-32 years old at this point. Fridge has worked flawlessly with zero issues. Doesn't even rattle when the compressor starts. It had yellowed over time but I repainted it and it honestly looks new. Clothes washer needed a new pump a couple of years ago. Still worked but it some times didn't drain all the water. Changed it in 20 mins and it still works. The dishwasher also had trouble draining. Turns out it just needed a cycle with some good cleaner to unclog the lines. The overflow limit switch also got stuck once but it was user error that brought it to light and simply physically moving it a bit fixed it. Their only real issue is that they're not as energy efficient as newer appliances, but I can't throw them away when I know they're in perfect working order. My only real gripe is that the clothes washer drum is a bit small.

  First saw Miele in Germany 2005.  Our family found it was more affordable to have a Miele over time less mechanical issues. We have one in America,  it is a good washer. We do not dry our cloths. But, whatever they sell it for it is worth it. We have no problems and my family's washer is still working fine.

  After five years, I've tried lots of different settings and figured out what works best for me and my clothes. I usually use Normal/Eco mode with a pre-wash and extra rinse cycle. This does a mediocre job (for example compared to a Miele W1 or an old school Maytag top loader, which both do a much better job). The TR7 also wastes a lot of water with this setting, but it's better than the alternatives.

  Do a search on this sub for Miele. There have been at least two very recent discussions on the subject, which I found helpful. I have the Alize model; I bought it in 2014 and it’s no longer made. It’s great on hardwood and the attachments are great on upholstery, but for rugs/carpeting, I use my Dyson. I would love to buy the one for pets (which seems to be getting the most glowing reviews here), but since my current Miele still works fine (and so does my Dyson), I can’t justify buying another vacuum, especially such a pricey one. As soon as one breaks down, though!

  It's largely dependent on what you need it for. I have a 'cheap' Miele, because I have all hardwood floors. I believe the Vacuum cleaner sub has a handy chart, IIRC, but so long as it's a bagged model you can upgrade the filter if you really need the HEPA. The primary difference comes in attachments, particularly the powered brush roll for pets/ deep pile carpets.

  Not sure if your question was meant for me or not but I ended up finding a Miele repairman and deciding to take a chance on going that route after describing the symptoms and their being fairly sure that the problem came down to a $50 part (water non-return valve). He replaced the part which was cracked, in a short amount of time and it went back to working like a dream. Go figure! So happy I gambled as he may have come out only to discover it couldn't be repaired. It was expensive at around $200 but I was about to spend a hell of a lot more on a new Bosch. I think our dishwasher was around $1700 new in 2011 or 2012 (one model down from their top model at the time) and today the same panel-ready one or equivalent would probably cost more. There are youtube videos that show how to replace the part though so we could have done that but this way it just got DONE. How is your dishwasher situation?

I have cases, still looks great, but I have sold the phone. People are always surprised that my phones look so good when I sell them, I'm a klutz and drop it often. Still looks great. Outerwear/jackets/Camping - * L.L. Bean. I have been going up to Freeport, for over 30 years, and my parents for probably 50 years. They really do stand behind their products. I have a few things rip. They have always just replace them, no questions. Footwear * Asics Sneakers, they always have sales. I have to change out sneakers every 6 months because I just walk a lot and the arch support just breaks, and typically have two I switch between. Kitchen Items- * Love Oxo Brand. Middle of the road work horse. * Kitchen Aid. I have a hand mixer, still going. I know people who the stand mixer give them to their grandchildren. Tires- * I always go to Costco - They have the best pricing and offer 5 year warranty, Flat Repairs, and tire rotations in the pricing. Vaccuum- * Miele. So much more expensive, but just a workhorse.

  Mazda. Traded my last one at over 200k miles and it never needed anything other than regular maintenance. My current Mazda ditto at 23k miles. I’ve had Bosch dishwashers in 2 previous homes and they were the bomb. If this current DW ever needs replacement it will be a Bosch. My Miele canister vacuum has served me well for 20 years in my dog +cat home, and I bought it used.

  Miele does not make their own fridges. They are re-branded liebherr. Miele's primary focus is Washing Machines, Dryers, Dishwashers and Vacuums. Almost everything else is either made FOR them or just assembled by them. They are still, usually, good products. I, personally, own many Miele products, but I would never own a Fridge or any kitchen range/stove with their name on it. Too many problems due to them not making the components that go into the products. LG makes a very reliable fridge from the mechanical standpoint. Their plastics are usually trash. So, while the fridge will probably cool for 20 years, you may not have many drawer, trays or other "plastic" items inside the fridge last that long.

  I had a Miele canister vacuum for 23 years, and it was definitely the best vacuum I've ever had. The motor died and they don't make it anymore, so I'm researching my next Miele. For reference I also have a Dyson stick vacuum that I seldom use because something always breaks and it's kinda shoddily made. I've had an Electrolux and Hoover as well, imo they just do not stand the test of time and it's super irritating. I'd rather buy once and be done.

I think they're all going to be basically the same with different accessories, so you could probably convert from one to another if you buy an additional nozzle. We bought a filter holder so we could use the cheaper filters in ours. The best feature, not that the rest is bad, is the automatic cable retraction. That's still great fun.

  We have the Miele Blizzard CX1 Electro Bagless, which does a great job on a home with an always-shedding Pug who has a Corgi as a bestie who comes for play dates. Love the bagless! After many years with my old Miele, this was a great upgrade! We also have a Dyson V11 hanging on the charger in the kitchen for quick pickups that does a great job hitting the wood floors, low-pile rugs and upholstery (with attachments) that’s really effective, too.

Pretty bulletproof. 3 of them I’ve either purchased or referred for purchase still running flawlessly after a decade. For the small vac: I’ve got a Dyson stick vac. I don’t love it and wouldn’t recommend for the price.   My dad has had the same miele C1 Cat and Dog vacuum for 14 years and it still works great despite the fact that he vacuums with it DAILY, and has forced it to ingest some crazy shit. Because of his extremely heavy usage, he's had to have it in to get it fixed three times in the last 14 years, but it was overall fairly inexpensive. One of the real strengths of the miele vacuum is that it was designed to be repaired, as many of the parts are replaceable (and miele sells these parts). Since we have a local miele store, my dad can just take it in to their shop and the guy there will fix it for him.

  Sebo and Miele are BIFL. Dyson is not BIFL. If you buy a Sebo, the manual comes with an exploded parts diagram where you can buy each and every part. Dyson does not have this because when something breaks, they want you to buy a new vacuum. Same goes for Shark, Bissell and other bagless garbage that people keep recommending.

  I get it. I have owned a couple of Dyson’s… one was a canister bought about 20 years ago and one was a cordless bought about 8 years ago. I kept the Canister going for 8 years but had to replace more than a few brittle plastic parts and it was held together with Epoxy at the end. The cordless battery didn’t last 6 months and I had to replace the canister assembly within 30 days. The clear plastics are simply very brittle in my anecdotal experience. Also have a Miele that was once dropped down the stairs and still works like new. It is 10 years old. I appreciate the convenience of cordless. I actually don’t see bagless as a positive. They objectively release a lot of contaminant’s into the air when emptying. Sure you can empty it outside… but having to go outside every time you use it is not convenient. With a good bagged vacuum, the bag helps filter the air and the bags last a long time. The holy grail for me would be a good bagged cordless vacuum with swappable batteries. We bought a Samsung Bespoke Jet which is pretty close to the ideal… but expensive. Bagless but has a charging base with a bag and filter in it that automatically empties the canister without any dirt getting into the air. Much more quiet than the Dyson, feels better made and includes two swappable batteries with a charger on the base for the 2nd battery.

  Fully agree I've never enjoyed vacuuming as much as after getting a miele Bagless canister vacuum. It Glides around effortlessly, it has gooseneck at several locations to make sure I can rotate the hose whatever the fuck Direction I want regardless of whether or not I have an attachment on it. And while being just as if not more powerful than every other vacuum I've ever had it is quiet even at its maximum level. I can easily maintain a conversation without having to shout. The HEPA filter is easy to clean thanks to the little flicker dial thing I just pull it out hold it over the trash and go to town on that until the chunks stop coming out and when it gets too bad for that it's a washable filter. I also have one of their stackable washing machine and heat pump dryers and I love both of those to death as well. Also went with them for my dishwasher best dishwasher I've ever had doesn't matter what I stick in that thing it will get it clean. I have put baked lasagna trays in there that have sat out overnight with absolutely no soaking or pre rinsing of any kind and it gets it every time. I will definitely be sticking with the brand they are worth their extra cost

  Miele C1 is extremely light weight and all of the wheels are on separate casters. Very easy. The non-powered head from the dog/cat version still provides plenty of agitation for throw rugs.

  Shark is the move from the Wirecutter article the thing is amazing for like $150. You can buy 8 of them or 1 miele. I know this is BIFL but things with moving parts are never "for life" get the shark and a nice rigid shop vac from home Depot for heavy duty vacuuming and you'll be set.

The bag alone does a better job filtering than the whole of any Dyson or Shark. Then it goes through a pre-filter, and then a HEPA or carbon filter. The inside of my C3 is basically spotless. I could eat out of it, and I've had it for 8 years, with two dogs.

  I think more important to any vacuum you buy, is to not just assume you buy it and just have to empty it for the rest of your life. A reminder that regular maintenance is required, and I feel like that is the most common reason people do not get the life span out of their vacuums (or other things). For example, though not 100% related, we replaced the door gasket on our dishwasher of 13 years, about 5 years ago as it was showing some cracks, and it's still chugging along. Taking apart the brushes, filters, checking gaskets (these eventually do crack, nature of the material) etc; We set up various yearly reminders to maintain some of our various household items and so far all our stuff has been fairly robust! /touch wood lol My mom has a Miele that she has had since I can remember. We ended up with a Dyson DC46 as I live in a small town and it was the model the small store happened to have. We have now had it 11 years with a Maine Coon cat that sheds tumbleweeds all over the damn place. We also have a Bissel dustbuster for small spills that I am a big fan of. Of course all anecdotal but seriously happy with all those lol.

  I have a Miele canister and upright, they are great and I would recommend them to anyone. I also still have a Dyson Animal upright that I bought in 2003. I think keeping them going for the long term is in doing maintenance on them.

  I spent about two years dithering and then a month researching and got a Miele C3 to replace my falling-apart and LOUD Dyson Animal. It was a good choice. Quiet and no dust. I did remove all the carpeting in my house, but still need to vacuum up the cat tumbleweed under the bed and sofa, as well as the “welcome” mats inside the house where I leave my outdoor shoes.

  For me quality of wash and gentleness on cloths trumps bifl on this one. That being said I’ll go with LG. Mine is 8 years old, my sister’s is 15 and both work well still. I had one shirt that I washed a dozen times and it looked new still. Washed it once in a friend’s new traditional top loader and it came out super faded and awful looking. The shirt was basically ruined. For me I’ll save more and do better being able to keep and use my cloths for way longer. If you are in the market for smaller washers, Miele or even Bosch makes a good one. My parents have had those over the years overseas.

  I have heard nothing but good about Miele and Asko. But I couldn’t bring myself to pay for replacing my Electrolux with either.  Since my old Electrolux lasted around fifteen years, I went with that.  I am five years in with no problems.  Perform regular maintenance (mostly running a monthly cleaning cycle and rinsing the soap drawer) and close the door only when washing clothes (prevents mold and mildew growth).  I also have a whole house surge protector (helps reduce the chances of damage to circuit boards).

  Although the sub is very US centric, most BIFL brands in general are European, with some notable exceptions like Patagonia (which you can find in Europe). Kitchen: Demeyere, Le Creuset and Staub. I don't think there's better for cooking than these 3. Rösle kitchen tools. Italian coffee mills and machines from several high end brands. Peugeot pepper mills. Even popular Silestone counter tops are Spanish. Appliances: Miele, Siemens, Bosch... Clothing: (There's a thousand brands, but to name a few BIFL ones) Sunspel, Zegna, Logo Piana, Brunello Cucinelli, Brioni, Falke (although Socks are not really BIFL, they are for sure better than the over hyped Darn Tough around here). Luxury items: Any serious watch brands or luxury hand bags are European, just name a brand. Depending on your budget, you have a lot to choose from. And then depending on other niche stuff that you might be looking for, there's probably some local producer from Italy, Spain or Portugal that will have it in word class quality.

  Miele dishwashers, Bosch power tools, Karcher vacuums. Almost anything German if it has a motor inside it. Nordic and English clothing is good. From boots, to jackets. Fjallraven, Bludstone. Make sure it's made in Europe. Italians also have nice "summer" clothing. Italian leather is also supreme. The French has nice everyday house hold items. It really depends on what you are looking for. There is a lot of variety and usually things made in Europe have a nice bump up in quality regarding the Chinese or SEA counterparts.

  Unpopular Opinion: "BIFL" as an excuse for overspending

  The best thing I learned from this sub was to stick with repairable or analog appliances.  I have an appliance shop and repair near me so if my Miele vacuum breaks down (has not in 8 years) there is someone who knows how to get the parts or how to fix it.  We’ve used the same shop for washer and dryer parts (roper that are 10+ years old and came with our house).   We even went with a fridge brand that this sub never recommends (LG) because the one we bought which is just literally a fridge and freezer lasted 14 years before it became unrepairable.  I did check this sub but again just came away with “if it’s a bare bones fridge you’re good” and got another LG that fits perfectly into the kitchen.

  How do you feel about buying things?

  I just used those numbers since I spent $300 on lunch today for 4 of us at a pretty nice place with a drink and dessert. I wouldn't say I'm a foodie but it's a pretty big step up when you're eating at places that are at the very least approaching Michelin recommended or similar. I wouldn't remember a basic lunch but I'll remember the one I had today. They focused on mixing flavors and quality ingredients. The next step up is when you start getting different temperatures and textures in the food. It's not just the taste. When you start combining the location, view, ingredients, textures, tastes, temperature, exotic cooking techniques and ingredients, etc it becomes an experience and event that you really remember. At home we have a nice Miele kitchen with good cookware and it makes cooking so much better. I can also make a better cup of coffee at home with my Jura than most cafes. I'm not really into phone cameras but there is a big difference between them. I make the family photo albums and it's worth having a minimum quality phone camera for everyone at least or the low quality is kinda jarring next to the other photos. I think a better example would be cars though where the technology in them makes a very meaningful difference in the driving experience. There's regular cruise control but then there's adaptive cruise control that can basically drive for you and cars that park for you. There's regular lights and then like 4 different types of high end lights that really help with night time driving. I get annoyed when a car doesn't have auto windshield wipers and auto high beams. It's worth automating as much as possible. I'll prioritize the vehicles safety record and quality control and then deck out the features.

  Not everyone here is from the US. I was curious, bc I realised later in life that most of my things are BIFL I only replace when something breaks and often with the same brands. I inherited a lot and use it up to date - so when I inherited a Miehle Washing Machine, that still is fine after 30yrs, then that's something I can recommend. Same with eg my grandfather's writing set - sure I get hundreds of pens for the price of a Montblanc, but a) it's a lot of ressources and b) not as nice. I live quite minimalistic - we move often transcontinental and everything we own fits in about 10 suitcases. Btw: with clothes - it really depends - many nowadays so highly sought after luxury brands were just "good shops" with a very high quality and good service for me as a European - I bought my Burberry Trenchcoat in 1993, it's a classic, it's absolutely always a good choice and in 2023 they refurbished it for me: destitched, cleaned, new pockets bc there were holes, new impregnation, new buttons amd buckle - only one of several examples

  How to choose a miele vaccuum?

  I think you might have confused yourself on the model numbers. The 3 most common lines of Mieles are: * S2- Entry level full-sized canister * S6- Deluxe compact canister * S8- Deluxe full-sized canister The S6 lacks a powerbrush head, which you will need in the future. The S2 and S8 HomeCare models each come with a powerbrush head, usually the SEB228. What I imagine is that the dealer has packaged an S8 HomeCare with the higher-end SEB236 powerbrush head, and bumped up the price. You should be able to get the dealer to go down to the 228 and knock $50 off the price. So, budget; If you can afford the S8 HomeCare, I highly recommend it. It's going to be with you for *many* years, and assuming you might, in the future, move into larger accommodations, more carpeting, etc., you will want it's large capacity and better construction to keep going and going. The HomeCare is a good choice because of all of the additional accessories. If you get the dealer to step down to the 228 head, see if he/she will throw in the SBB300 Parquet Twist floor brush...trust me. It is soooo much better than any other floor brush.
