Are you using the Moccamaster filters? They are specifically designed for the machine’s flow rate. Using anything other than their filters has been a disaster for me.

I mainly make espresso these days, but I have a Moccamaster. The machine will keep the temp and flow rate the same. Keep the dose the same, and then adjust your grind until you get the desired extraction, right?

It’s entirely possible you got used to the taste of your OXO and figured out precisely the ratios, grind size, etc needed to make coffee you loved, but those variables aren’t the same on the Moccamaster. There’s nothing wrong with going back to what you’re familiar with, and what you know you can get great coffee from right away! Don’t always trust reviews and reddit hivemind stuff. I have a Moccamaster and I like it a lot but it certainly isn’t some life changing brewer, and it has its issues. Still, it’s what I’ve settled on for convenience, simplicity, longevity, and it looks great on the counter :)

Yes it is. We have one for over ten years now and it's great! Part of the BIFL in my opinion is the possibility to replace parts yourself. The parts are easy to buy online. However, we never experienced any problems with it.

We’ve had our Moccamaster for going on 15 years, and couldn’t be happier. Nothing has broken, it’s repairable if something did, and it’s incredibly easy to maintain. Oh, and also it does the job it is made to do exceptionally, consistently well.

Another happy Moccamaster owner here. I’ve had mine for around 9 years and use it daily, it’s still working like new. Only complaint I would have is the half/partial pot function. There’s a little switch on the filter basket that doesn’t work very well. Doesn’t much matter for me as we brew full pots. The design might have changed by now, I am not sure as I haven’t had to research coffee makers since.

It has got to be one of the most BIFL items that plugs into a wall and manufactured in 2025. The glass carafe can obviously break if dropped, and can be replaced at reasonable cost. Of course it will need a little bit of maintenance running cleaning cycles, more often if you have hard water. And it makes great coffee. I still make a V60 pour over when I get a real special coffee, but for my "daily driver" specialty coffee, Moccamaster does a great job. It's worth the \~$350 it usually costs, but every couple months it goes down to $250 and under $200 a couple times a year (Prime day and black friday?)

One thing to consider is that anyone reviewing a Mochamaster has just bought a new one. It's not yet contaminated with the bitter oil that builds up in a coffee maker over time. The first cups will be especially good, and that'll affect the perceptions. I don't think that the Mochamaster makes superior coffee. But it is a well made machine, and it can be taken apart and repaired if need be. To me, repairability is a key component of BIFL.

My buddy is a coffee expert and told me to buy a Mocca master and baratza grinder and I did. And a French press and I did. But at the end of the day my favorite cup of coffee comes from really good quality coffee and the simple pour over. Even the MoccaMaster can’t fix Folgers

I have a 20 year old Cuisinart that the past 5 years was only used for when I had guests. I've mostly been doing pourover on a ceramic Hario or Kalita. I recently splurged on the MM KBGV (got one for $240 on Black Friday week Amazon-returned it because I got a lighting deal on one for $179). I did a head to head comparison of taste between my MM and the Cuisinart. The MM tasted notably better taking the same amount of water, same amount of coffee and brewing in both machines. That said it's not going to match my pourovers but for drip coffee, it's about the best drip I've tasted in over 50 years of drinking and making coffee.

My Keurig died about a month or so ago and I did my research and looked at reviews for hours on every kind of coffee maker there is. I came to the conclusion that it seems like to get a reliable, simple coffee maker that I was going to have to spend the extra money on the Mochamaster. I ordered it, fully expecting to shit all over it. After trying one cup, I realized what the difference was and how quality the machine was in person. 100% no buyer's remorse at all. Wait for Black Friday or around Christmas because on Amazon, they were $100 off. I got mine for $280 plus tax in October. Next month they were $250, tax and all. Even though I overpaid, I still don't have any regrets getting my machine earlier. Best coffee machine ever.

Moccamaster is great. Mine is 5 years old and makes superior coffee every day. I have the insulated carafe. The secret to better coffee is to temporarily remove the carafe and stir the grounds in the hot water a bit before replacing the carafe. I also balked at the price for what is really a very basic drip machine, but I wouldn’t hesitate to buy another one once this one finally wears out.

We had one in an office I worked in. So we made probably 3-4 pots per day. It was still going strong 6-7 years later when I left. I wouldn’t exactly say they are repairable, but they do sell some replacement parts. That said, I got an Oxo 8-Cup Coffee maker for home because they’re a lot cheaper for one. It’s Specialty Coffee Association certified. It has a thermal carafe and no hot plate. So it makes a good cup of coffee and doesn’t burn it. I can’t tell you if it’s BIFL, but I’ve had it for a couple of years and would recommend it. Now for grinders you can’t beat the repair support for Baratza grinders. They repair them for you for a set price or you can order all the parts yourself. (Outside the US the shipping kills you to have them repair it though).

I own a Moccamaster from the KGB select line and it is great. Just a simple drip machine for very solid filter coffee. It only uses 2 switches so there aren't a lot of mechanical parts that could go bad and for the basic components, they sell spare parts for a fair price.

Yup, but i check to see if there are warranties to back up that quality that comes with high price. One example being my moccamaster. It was twice as expensive as my last coffee brewer, but has a 5 year warranty.

Need BIFL Recommendations as a Graduation Present!
A few things.. 1) id use this to upgrade your hobby kits. Need a new/better sewing machine? Cricut attachments? (Not really my element) 2) for suit case kits, how many do you really need? You can do a lot with a nice carry on (maybe Away?) and travel back pack. Depends on how you travel but I have not had a need for a “large checked bag” in a very long time.. 3) for coffee look at the moccamaster and see if that is something you’d be interested in.

The moccamaster uses copper and glass tubing and a metal spout, The brew basket is the only plastic component that touches hot water in the machine. Not directly either (the coffee and filter will cool it a bit first). You can swap it with a ceramic #4 cone if your really ocd. There are very few machines that have no plastic touching hot water. Even >$1k machines have plastic tubes and spouts.

I'm pretty sure my cheap machines were leaking plastic or paint into it somehow unfortunately which is why I saved up for a more expensive one. It tasted similar to how burnt plastic smells. Need a quality coffee maker
Number one premise for good tasting coffee ist freshly ground coffee. A 20 dollar filter machine will do fine, if you grind your beans just before making the coffee. As to the kinds of setups. The world of coffee is very big and there are many ways of brewing. If you want to spend around 200 bucks for a set and forget machine, the Moccamaster is the absolute winner. You put freshly ground coffee in, flip the switch and wait a few minutes- done. But again- the quality of each cup is dependant on a lot of things with good coffee beeing the number one factor. If you only need small amounts of coffee and you are willing to put some time into making it, then go for a handfilter setup. Look at Hario for example. It's like a filter machine without the machine. You have to put hot water into the filter yourself. But in exchange it's super cheap, gives you a lot of freedom and will probably never break- it's just a piece of plastic. If you were to go this route, I'd suggest to read up on grinders and water filters. You could get a handfilter + quality grinder + a water filter (filtered water is important for coffee but you can definitely start without) and some high quality coffee beans for less than 200 bucks.

Go to eBay and look for an all-glass percolator (Pyrex) or vacuum coffee maker from the 1960's. It won't make coffee as good, though, as the Moccamaster. Especially a percolator which boils the coffee.

What signs do you look for to tell if something will actually last years?
Alright hear me out. This isn’t perfect, but brands that only make one thing, or are primarily known for one thing, is a good indicator if not necessarily BIFL then at least usually pretty good quality. Cases in point: - Red Wing Shoes (at least the heritage line) - Leatherman (pocket tool) - Le Creuset (only cast iron, their original product) - Darn Tough (socks) - Peugeot (only their grinders) - Zassenhaus (grinders) - Moccamaster (coffee makers) All quality brands start out by doing one thing and doing that one thing very very well. The well run brands stick to this promise and avoid the enshittification that happens when branching into product lines that they don’t really understand to make a quick buck. That’s why one shouldn’t buy anything other than cast iron from Le Creuset or grinders from Peugeot, everything else they make is average at best, making more money because some management consultant has recommended that they grow their brand value through diffusion products.

But if you’re intent on getting some new equipment, they’re going to tell you to get the moccamaster. Mine’s going on 5 years and looks like new. I descale and clean it every 100 brews, and make sure sure to wipe the burners so coffee doesn’t get baked on. I also learned my lesson and fold the seams of the filters to keep them from blocking the basket outlet, as someone mentioned. Oh, and you can add your own timer by plugging it into a smart plug (I use HomeKit and a Thread-based plug). Just set it up the night before with water and coffee and have the switch turn on when you want your coffee to brew. And be sure to fold those filter seams!

Yeah I paid $230 USD for my Moccamaster on sale. (I got the thermal carafe not the heat plate) The plastic free one is $400 on sale. I would have a hard time paying that much for something I’ve never heard of before just in the name of no plastic even though that is tempting and my #1 gripe about the Moccamaster.

What’s the best coffee maker you guys have used??
After doing a ton of research and a lot of time on BIFL, I bought a Moccamaster about three months ago and couldn’t be happier. It does exactly what I need. I used the giant database of coffee makers on the “Barista HQ” webpage to compare the models closely, and I ended up going with the 79212 KBTS (8 cup with stainless steel thermal carafe). I kiiiiind of wish I’d gotten the 15 cup option, but that just tells you too much about my coffee habits haha.

Temperature. Moccamaster actually boils/near boils water compared to most drip machines, which are typically around 170F. Higher temperature makes for better extraction = flavor. Rate of heated water spraying onto grounds is also much slower in a Moccamaster. You get more even grounds contact and more time in contact. That said, better is relative and you like what you like. I also enjoy French press coffee and it's even more intense, given the above two variables are further increased. I also enjoy my Moccamaster and use it daily. You may not like a more intense, more extracted coffee and that's totally ok.

If budget is a concern, and if you have the time and ability, just make hubby a nice French Press coffee. An electric kettle (to get the water temp correct) and an actual French Press won't cost you more than about $50 combined. You could also get a decent coffee grinder for about $120, but since budget is a concern, if you buy beans at a local coffee shop they'll often grind them to your desired coarseness for you. Just tell them it's for French Press coffee. A coffee expert YouTuber named James Hoffman has some good videos on brewing a Great French Press. It's not hard.

Glass carafe huh? I went for the thermal and am loving it so far. Worth taking a little extra time and doing a bloom on the weekends IMO. It vastly improves the taste for minimal effort. I wish it had an auto bloom setting.

There is 2 things with this amazing machine that I would say look out for. 1st one is open the lid when you pour water in to fill the res if you don't there will be spillage if you pour fast. 2nd is fold your filter seams, one time the seam of the paper filter blocked the flow of water and coffee and grounds pour over the top. this machine is a tank and the coffee is so good. enjoy!

It's fine. It's not really better tasting than any other drip coffee machine, but it is made in Europe, the manufacturer sells all the spare parts and it is quite quick to make a full pot. I still prefer a cafetiere if I have time to make it properly.

I've seen a few people recommended Technivorm coffee makers. In general I like myTechnivorm Moccamaster coffee maker, but I never drink more than 1-2 cups of coffee and don't have guests often. So it's much more machine and counter space than I need. If you aren't making going through a whole pot, I'd recommend against it

Best Dual Coffee Maker (single cup and carafe)
I was in a really similar spot with a Cuisinart 2-in-1 setup. Too many moving parts and it just didn’t hold up for more than a couple of years. At this point, I’m convinced that two separate machines are the way to go. I made my primary brewer the one I use most (for me that’s the carafe, so I went with a Moccamaster), and then I keep a simple single-serve option for the “grab a cup and go” mornings. A basic pour-over cone has been perfect for that. Now it’s just a matter of dialling in the water and coffee ratios. If you’re still shopping around, take a look at the Barista HQ website. They’ve got a big comparison database on their homepage of all the different models and brands, where you can sort by features, brew size, all that stuff.

Tip from a Moccamaster owner for ya - if the steel carafe gets stains/buildup, run a cycle of water through it the coffeemaker and drop a dishwasher pod/powder in there and let it sit, sealed, for a couple hours. It'll make it sparkling on the inside again. :)

For me, the "worth it" appliances are: * Robot Coupe R2 Dice with all the attachments (there are two kinds of food processors -- Robot Coupe and "less than.") * BlendTec blender * Robot Coupe or Vitamix stick blender (big price difference here -- the Robot Coupe is superior, but at a hefty price increase) * Kitchenaid (or better yet Hobart) stand mixer with at least the grinder attachment if not others * PolyScience Sous-Vide pro * MoccaMaster and LaPavoni coffee makers * Zojirushi or Cuckoo rice cookers My coffee grinder is no longer made. The only downside to the mocha master imo is you cannot set it to brew at a particular time. I use apple so I bought an eve energy smart plug so it can be set to turn on at a certain time or if I forget to turn it off after I leave for work I can turn it off.

I know that I'm never again buying Nespresso Vertuo. I think it's overengineered with a single purpose - to patent a brewing system and exclude capsules from free producers. Nespresso Original, however, ticks all your boxes. I have one, which is 20 years old. Easy to learn (just drop a capsule in) and lots of great choices available. You get espresso though, so if that's not your cup of coffee, then go for Moccamaster.. I mean, everybody hates and wants to boycot Nestle, but you don't have to buy coffee from them, there are lots of great taste options available from indepe dent makers, even from.supermarket own brands.

Moccamaster for drip - prime deal. Breville Barista for espresso/lattes/cold drinks/ etc. I am not sure if it is truly BIFL but I have used the heck out of the breville in the last 5 years and its been great. They do also offer some replacement parts. This combo lets me make just about any coffee drink I could want. The breville is perhaps not the best esspresso machine one could buy and I could also get a separate fancier grinder but for me this has been a great price to performance sweet spot.

I know everyone is saying Moccamaster, but I have to agree. Specifically the KBGV select model. That changes the flow rate so you can make smaller batches which is what I do normally. I've switched back and forth with that switch on smaller batches and it really does make a difference. From someone who strictly only used the Aeropress and Chemex for years, this machine makes damn good coffee and I use it all the time. If you just follow the recommended grind/water ratios provided from the manufacturer, you'll have no issues. I do think it's overpriced though. I was a bit disappointed when I first got mine because of how much plastic was used, but it seems like they don't cheap out on the parts that matter. With that said, I'd wait for a sale on it because, although its a great machine, I do still think it's overpriced. I've had mine for a year and use it every day.

No, it just doesn’t sit over the center of the grinds/filter. So it drops water off-center into them. If you have your grinds sized just right it doesn’t matter much, but it does make it easier for a crust to form on the far side and for the grinds to not get evenly saturated. It’s a complaint you’ll see on r/Moccamaster fairly often, and I’ve never seen the company try to defend it like they have some of the cheaper components. Pretty sure they just don’t want to change up any of their parts. That sub can be toxic though, I’m sure someone will jump in here to tell me the company can do no wrong and I clearly don’t understand how the Coriolis effect affect steep times and drop location or something. Still enjoy the machine, though— I’m drinking a cup from it right now

A French press, mochapot, or a pour over system are going to be the ones that last forever because there’s very little that can go wrong with them outside of the glass breaking. They’re the easiest and simplest ways to make coffee and they’ll last forever with minimal maintenance. If you want a more modern coffee maker though, the moccamaster will likely be the answer though.

I’ve been down the rabbit hole over the years and Drip Coffee is not needing that expensive of a machine imo, pour overs (chemex) make the best coffee especially with a good nice bean grinder with options for grind size (I invested here and it was worth it) and good beans. If I were rich and money was no object then yes I’d get a moccamaster because they look so cool too. My buy it for life is a nice actual espresso machine. I tend to make stovetop coffee (not espresso but makes strong coffee) or countertop cold brew (saves me $ big time in combo with my grinder) but my next upgrade will be to an actual espresso machine for sure!!

Both French press and aeropress are capable of making better coffee, I think, but you can also randomly botch it sometimes, and it’s way more work to brew manually (more so with the aeropress). I got a Moccamaster for $170 on Prime day earlier this year. It’s nice, there are definitely valid complaints you’ll hear on the sub, though. Some parts feel cheap, it’s annoying that the shower head is off-center, etc. It’s a good looking machine and it makes good coffee, but I am glad I got it for $170 and not $350.

It does (IMO). Moccamaster actually gets the water up to boiling, most of the standard Mr Coffee style drip machines only get into the 180ish ballpark, maybe less by the time it hits your coffee. 195-205 is what's needed for maximum extraction, which Moccamasters deliver. "Better" is subjective, but Moccamaster is absolutely a different cup compared to other drip machines. Moccamaster vs French press vs pour over vs whatever other prep is another debate, but among drip machines it stands alone in basically its own category IMO.

The plastic lids are made of a non-leeching plastic. Idk what this other guy is talking about, but they fit perfectly fine and there's no need for them to be extremely strong unless you're smashing it against stuff? They probably also complain about the 'thin glass carafe' too lol. Get the moccamaster and move on. Far, far more robust than any other coffee maker I've seen. Easily cleaned as well. No small tubes to build up mold.

Look this might be controversial but I have over 30 coffee makers , all but 1 or 2 of all of the SCAA makers on the market and the MM only makes my top 10 AFTER the shower head mod. The MM will without a doubt last longer than most due to the copper boiler but I dont care about that when Im making my brew. A Bonavita will serve most peoples needs without the hefty price tag although I will take an older one over the newer ones due to cheaper components in the newer ones.The Breville is good and the option for cone or basket brews is a nice feature.. Best looking the Aarke wins hands down according to my guests but thats not something most care about..Again if you go with the MM get the shower head mod from Coffee Pilot in Canada for $30 plus shipping. Just my opinion everyone has their own opinion on these otherwise the market couldn't sustain so many high end makers. Happy Brewing!!

Also if you don’t brew a pot every day the water will evaporate and you end up with stronger than normal, smaller batch of coffee. Been using a Mr Coffee for years, it does what it does, just slower than a Bunn due to no preheated water on standby. Recently bought a Moccamaster but it my weekend car, so to speak. I've never had Bunn so can't speak for that, but you won't regret choosing Moccamaster. Easy to clean, durable, replaceable parts you can get separately in case something still breaks. I've had mine for 15 years and there's nothing about it that isn't as good as straight out of the box. Your brew sizes is similar to what I've been doing so there's certainly no issue with only brewing that much at once in the Moccamaster I have. There are several sizes available though, so it might be a good idea to check which one fits your need the best.

The Moccamaster is Made in the Netherlands. As a Dutchman, I am very much used to this device: my grandparents and parents had one, and only when I first moved out of the parental home, I did not have one for some years. The thing is: the Moccamaster is not for snobs at all. It is just a good, durable machine that performs consistently AND can be repaired, should that be necessary. (Probably only if you neglect regular maintenance, like de-calcifying.)

I totally agree. It will even make a very decent cup of coffee out of the bottom of the barrel pre ground Folgers as well. Consistent water output at the correct temp (and time) is key. Mr coffee starts splitting out water way too cold, and never reaches temp in the 8 minutes or so it takes to brew the pot. Moccamaster on the other hand starts putting out a correctly heated stream of water and brews in about 4 minutes.

I've said it here before and I'll say it again. I bought my first Moccamaster in the early 2000s refurbished on eBay and it lasted into the pandemic, and I did zero maintenance. I bought a new one to replace it a few years ago, and I'm following the recommended maintenance schedule, and I expect it to outlast me. Just wish they made a 12 cup version. Friends and family frequently say it makes close to the best cup of coffee they've ever had and several people have bought one after having coffee at my house. Just my experience, but I'll buy another one if I'm lucky enough to live long enough to need one. Editing upon reflection: Friends and family who love this coffee are not necessarily Coffee People. I mention it because they noticed it was better than their setup at home. I go to a fancy coffee place because it's a great neighborhood spot and I like to get out of the house. The owner told me his home coffee maker is a rando big box Mr. Coffee or whatever and a basic grinder. I've never seen him drink the coffee he makes in the shop. So this is just a reminder to myself and anyone out there that coffee can be highly subjective.

We have both as well. The Bonavita is at our farmhouse which we visit a couple of weekends out of the month. Agreed the Technivorm is the best but the Bonavita is a close second. The mocha master is extremely consistent. 197° 100% of the time and that makes the difference. Brew time on 1 L is about 10 seconds faster than the Bonavita. Both are excellent coffee makers though.

Years ago when I wanted to buy a top-notch coffee maker, I consulted Cook’s illustrated. They do not take ads. They are as legit as it gets. They were two machines they recommended, one was the Bonavita for about $150 and the other was the mocha master for $349. I bought the Bonavista. One day I was at a family friends party. The host parents traveled with their mocha master. it was timely since I was getting a little tired of the Bonavita and it wasn’t that good of coffee. He insisted I try the mocha master. One cup and I was hooked. I immediately placed an order online at $349 and don’t regret it not one bit.. For the reduced price than Amazon divided by what a cup of Starbucks coffee would cost you that’s an absolute steal. It makes a far superior cup than anywhere else. Someone proved it to me.

In general I think it's a very good time for coffee nerds with this specific concern - the release of the Aeropress Premium shows that companies see demand in this area & a large number of the home-oriented espresso machines have no plastic touching water (e.g. Rancilio Silva). Unfortunately the automatic filter machines are probably the area that's there's least interest/demand/innovation/new releases so you're largely stuck with older more classic products, which are likely to have plastic. As a lot of other commenters here have mentioned - Moccamaster seems like one of the best options here. Plastic water reservoir & filter basket but still relatively low on plastic overall compared to competitors.

Yes. Moccamaster is better than some because the boiler and internal tubing are made of metal. Leeching occurs more with hot water and prolonged contact. But the hot water does move through the brew basket into the pot, so it's not perfect. Ratio 8 is a borosilicate reservoir, all steel and glass internals. It or Chemex Ottomatic are probably your best bets.

I own a stainless steel V60, but personally I would buy a stainless Kalita wave or even a 185 cone for more consistent results if you don’t want to mess around with grind too much. I find it a bit odd your last machines have been K-cup machines but then you say the most important thing is no plastic. To me that just seems super weird. If you want a more automatic experience, Moccamaster makes a little dinky “single serve” version of its excellent machines and they are most definitely BIFL. I think you’d be really happy with an Aeropress, but you said no plastic… they make a premium one that is glass and aluminum, but I can’t justify spending that much on an Aeropress when a regular one can be had for like $30 or $40. If price is no object and you want something easy to use, I’d get a Moccamaster Cup One. It’s Moccamaster’s single-serve coffee machine. You’ll have it forever, they’re stupidly reliable. Glass or stainless steel French press would be an option too.

Personally, if you're otherwise happy with your Bunn, I'd keep doing detective work to try and solve the problem. Try a couple different brands of filters, give your machine a thorough clean and descale, maybe try comparing a few different beans, as some beans have a tendency to create lots of superfine particles that clog filters (looking at you, Ethiopia!). Moccamasters are great and last for decades, but they're also very expensive for a problem that might be solved just by buying a different brand of filter.

If I wasn't worried about the budget, I'd have gone with the Moccamaster for its repairability. That being said, I wound up getting the 8-cup brewer from Oxo on sale for close to half the cost of a Moccamaster. It's still SCA-certified and makes great coffee. I also prefer the insulated carafe instead of a hot plate, even if the last couple drops of coffee don't pour out like they do in a glass carafe.

Moccamaster is great, but please read the instructions before buying. If you’re planning to use reverse osmosis water, it’s not going to be a BIFL product. The acidity of RO water will degrade the boiler element and ruin it. If you use tap or filtered water, you’ll be good, and you’ll have a machine that can last a lifetime with proper upkeep.

Yup, totally agree with that answer. Grinder first (for consistency of particles size). One important thing about grinders: there is only few options that allow to grind for both pour-over/drip AND espresso. Baratza ESP encore is one of them. And I think the Niche Zero is another. Moccamaster is great, and seems build to last (I have mine since a few years, I descale it any time I open a new box of filters, and it makes the same coffee as day 1). V60 is a great and affordable option if you want to get into manual pour over. All products from Hario are fine. A kettle is necessary. A gooseneck temperature controlled kettle is a nice to have upgrade. Consider buying an accurate scale (regular kitchen scales are not so accurate, and on 15gr of beans, one gram more or less goes a long way, taste wise). Hario VST-2000 is a good option. If you want to go portable at some point (which is probably going to be, since falling into coffee is a never ending pit of compulsive buys), You can look into the regular Aeropress, and a proper handgrinder. r/Coffee is a great place to get feedback on what you intend to buy before you push the cart button. I don't understand why there is a "no low-effort posts" rule, given that it seems never to be enforced. The thing that bugs me about it is that it dilutes the useful info. Every coffee post is immediately flooded with people saying to get a moccamaster, and I saw one of them last week that had a very thoughtful analysis of moccamaster versus <some other brand> but there have been about 357 moccamaster posts since then. I'd like to see one pinned post per product like that. That way, when Jansport quality drops, all the people who don't know because we haven't replaced ours in 30 years wouldn't drown out the people with more recent experience.

Yeah you can, i have a mr coffee that's 8 years old and I've replaced multiple parts, our local ace hardware carries many of them. It's also super easy to disassemble and clean if it gets honey spilled out of the cupboard and into the buttons, ask me how I know. And even if you can't find a replacement you can buy a second one and use the old one for parts. I'm a coffee nerd but I get up at 3:45 for work and I like to have my coffee brewed and ready. Moccamaster makes a fine machine but a refurbished one is 10x the price and doesn't have a timer.

Upvoted the Moccamaster. I'll assume you will hit that sub and learned way more about them. I just wanted to post about finding a good deal. There is a risk, but I did ok. There are tons of local Amazon return auctions where I live. I scored what appeared to be unopened and unused one for $50 after two tries. My next want ended up being a coffee bean grinder that automatically weighs the ground beans. I also scored a good deal on a returned/used OXO Brew Conical Burr Coffee Grinder With Integrated Scale Black Model # 8710200. It may have some faults, but it works perfectly for me as a full time moccamaster grinder. Good luck!

I don't really know what you're looking for but a Moccamaster is a good high end coffee maker that has good warranty and spare parts unlike most. A really cheap one with a 2 year warranty is a 12 euro Swedish Biltema coffee maker I've had for about 2 years now with daily use and still works.

The issue is that you cannot fix those coffee makers. The Moccamaster was designed in the 60's and every piece is easily replacable, because eventually ANYTHING will break and you want to have something from a company that will still exist and still support the old products. There's a whole ecosystem built up around the moccamaster and decades from now you'll still be able to replace parts if needed.

Between my parents and myself, I've experienced 4 Moccamasters since the 80s. None were replaced because they didn't work, just changing styles meant they wanted a change in appearance. I have no doubt in my mind gold and brown one that the one my parents had when I was a toddler would still work to this day. May still do, someone bought it so who knows.

You can get an insulated carafe (DO NOT get the glass carafe with the heater, the insulated carafe will keep your coffee hot enough for the day, and you won't have burned coffee flavor). Reasons: It was designed in 1968 to make a pretty solid "pour over" pot., **Every piece is repairable/replacable**, they run for years and years and will always be supported. Newer companies have created versions that do pre-infusion, etc. but IMHO that's just more to potentially go wrong and has very minimal value in terms of producing a "better" pot of coffee.

The moccamaster is commonly thought to be the best drip coffee maker. Beyond that, glass pour overs like chemex are great. BIFL unless you drop it. No moving parts, and no contact with plastic. They make bigger ones for more volume if you need it.

While I agree this particular coffee pot likely makes sub-par coffee (like most drip pots), I can assure you that Bunn has also manufactured some models that have been [SCA-certified,](https://sca.coffee/certified-home-brewer) like the Heat n' Brew. Products on this list are known to produce a quality cup of drip coffee. I've since moved on from the Bunn that I had (to a Moccamaster), but it made a great cup of joe.

here is my beef with the bunn makers for home use - at least for me, one carafe is just too much coffee. Dependong on the model, the burner/warmer is 1 - too hot and 2 -no auto shutoff. That means the burner cooks your coffee after about 20 min. I also dont really love the always on feature since I only brew one pot in the morning. Its great for offices and restaurants who are brewing coffee constantly. also, on the "too big". - brewing a whole carafe with close to the correct water/bean ratio means you need to use quite a bit of coffee. That gets pretty expensive pretty quick if you are even using a mid range decent coffee. If you use the big jar of Folgers, not a big deal. But that stuff just tastes like old stale coffee no matter what (and I'm not really even that big of a coffee snob). For home use, I really just prefer the Moccamaster. Smaller carafe, and on the regular model, it has 2 burner temps, plus auto shutoff. Bunns are built well, and will last a lifetime but IMO are built for brewing a LOT of coffee fast, but not really built with brewing quality coffee in mind.

Daily Coffeemaker: Breville Barista Express + Moccamaster?
I just had to go look up my order history. I bought my Moccamaster on May 15, 2016, so it's 9 years old this month. Since owning it I have brewed 1 (and sometimes 2) full pots every day. It has never failed me. I'm also not as religious about cleaning it as I should be...my filters come in a 200-pack, and I thoroughly clean it at the end of every filter pack. Prior to owning this Moccamaster, I went through 1 coffee maker every 18 months and did that for years until I got sick of replacing substandard junk every 1.5 years. I have no experience with Breville.

They have replaceable components as well, in case any there were to ever happen to one of its pieces... No need to trash the entire thing like other brands. Descale after 100 brews and you're golden.

I bought one new in 2013. Still going strong. Since then I have bought about 5 used on eBay for family and friends and to have one at work. So simple and parts easy to get if something breaks or wears out. If you descale it regularly, it will bring you joy for decades. Food grade citric acid is cheap and great for this. Maybe prior owner had harder water than you and it has scale build up? As for coffee, try a cheap conical or flat burr grinder at medium to coarse grind. Find a roast and beans that you like. Light roasts can taste more sour to some people. I like medium to dark roasts (typically sweeter and more chocolately) like Peet’s Major Dickason’s Blend. It’s a steal at Costco. But find one you like and grind fresh for best results.

A high quality drill/driver set (Makita for me). I’m very big on DIY, but I don’t think the average homeowner realizes how easily they can maintain simple things around the house and make easy improvements with a couple tools a drill that isn’t underpowered junk. I’ve had mint set for over a decade, renovated our entire house with it, built multiple decks, fences, etc. and it’s still going strong, getting most of its use for little tasks. Other things: - Simply human garbage can - Made-in cast iron griddle - Moccamaster - Kindle - a core set of good everyday tools.

Unpopular Opinion: “Researching Before Buying” as an Excuse for Overthinking
One way to get around this is to just find stuff. In the trash, cheap at garage sales, whatever. This engages a ton of serendipity. You learn stuff, can try stuff out, get rid o the things you don't like. It tends to get you out of your info silo. Mostly I do have high quality items in my life, but am always on the lookout for random stuff to try. Sometimes it is really lucky, like I recently found a nice vitamix in the trash that was nicer and quieter than the one we had so I kept it. The old one is passed on to a relative. A while I found a Moccamaster and it was something of a miracle that it was complete. Having tested it a couple of times I decided it is not for me so I sold it to a happy person from craigslist. "Researching before buy" is really Consumer Reports way of allowing you to justify consumption that might not need to happen.

Breville BDC650BSS, used daily since purchased in 2017
I had one for 5 years and it died. I contacted them for assistance and they said no repairs or parts, but gave me like 25% off a new one. I've had that one for 4 years now, but am actually selling it to a colleague tomorrow. I turned him onto the same one, but his didnt last more than 2.5 years. I picked up a new Moccamaster for $100 on FB. That's what I'm switching to. My sister and my parents also have the same Breville. Theirs haven't died after probably 8 years. Its a decent pot, but expensive and requires a lot of maintenance. It regularly jams. Honestly the only reason I've used that Breville for 9 years or so is because it makes a great single cup of coffee and is almost as convenient as a Keurig.

12 cup coffee maker for daily use
A good quality drip coffee machine brews at the correct temperature, for an optimal amount of drip time, holding the temperature of the dripped water consistently during that time. The technical tests of coffee machines, which you cann find and translate on German and Swedish website, show that these tehcnical attributes are iwhat makes good tasting coffee - assuming you use fresh, good quality beans, that is. Once the coffee is brewed, if the carafe is head, the coffe machine has to hold it at the correct termperature range, not too hot not too cold, for 30 minutes. (After 30 mins brewed coffee is not fresh any more and its taste has dropped). The Moccamasters do that job correctly - holding those temperatures consistently in the correct range. Most of the cheap thowaway machines dont, and actually very few expensive machines do either. They tend to cut costs on the heating mechanism, and the result is inconsisent temperatures. Its not "a Moccamaster" - there are many different models, off of the same basic heating and drip mechanism which is a proven high quality one. They have them in many sizes, no doubt including 12 cups, but ultimately the coffee is best fresh that's why I point out that for most people a 12 cup machine is overkill in terms of size - you have about 30 mins to drink the coffee - so smaller batches are better). They Moccamasters are made of good quality parts and totally replaceable, with a ready supply of parts at fair prices. They dont change the parts used every year, so you can count on long term support with parts. I have had one myself for 6 years and I can vouch that it is top long term value for money.

Moccamaster KBT or KBTS?
I bought the smaller KBTS. I initially wanted a glass lined carafe, but I read too many post about the glass breaking and I didn’t wanna deal with that. I am happy with my purchase. The other benefit about having the smaller size is that it fits really nicely under my cabinet and doesn’t take up too much space.

Get a refurb directly from Moccamaster, you get a year warranty and the one I got was new. Most of the used ones I have seen on marketplace are the same cost or more than a refurb.

i've had mine for 8 years, it's an awesome and very simple coffee maker. doesn't magically make your coffee taste better, but definitely works better than any other auto brewer i've tried. i switched to moccamaster from pourover, and honestly it brews better coffee than i could with my chemex. only complaint is that IMO the glass carafe is too thin, i've broken 2 but they were both my fault. still feels very thin.

The Jet-O-Matic vintage percolator produces good coffee without scorching, so do the Westinghouse Pressure Flo and the Corning 6 and 10 cup models. Cleaning was no more difficult than dumping grounds and a rinse and a wipe. But they're on a shelf now that I have a Moccamaster.

Exactly. Guys, come one. So many coffee posts, but for me it’s moccamaster every time. What makes something bifl to you? For me, top quality product that produces top quality results and, while it is reliable, if it would fail there are replacement parts available. For coffee, that is a moccamaster. This and a dualit toaster are kitchen bifl staples. Now, if you don’t mind cleaning a percolator every morning….. that would be another story. Not much to go wrong on those.

Okay, how many cups do you want to make? 1 cup- Aeropress, but it is plastic and will eventually wear out or hario pourover. If you need to make 2-3 cups there are plenty of great siphons brewers like hario, it will last as long as glass lasts. If you need more than 3 cups Moccamaster or bunn for home depending on your budget. Hario also makes an amazing coldbrew maker, I can't explain why its better than no name brand ones but it just is.

Moccamaster heats up water to pretty high temperature (2-3 degrees Celsius below boiling so around 5-7 higher than usually recommended for pour-overs) so the key is to offset that by grinding coarser than you would for V60. I have a wilfa gridder and set it for the finer end of 'french press'. I was quite disappointed with the taste before someone told me to do that, now it's fine, sometimes delicious. But MM does not bring out everything there is to bring out of your beans, there are better pour over machines out there already. Its advantages are mostly build quality and post-purchase support.

I would not spend the money on Shun. I would get Global or Mercer or one of the German bands if you want to splurge. Also the sharpening kit from worksharp is way more user friendly for first timers. I disagree with the safety razor too. There are a few I would rather use instead. Like a vintage superspeed. There are things I do agree with, like rice cookers, moccamaster, printers, cast iron and bookbags. I think the article makes commissions when you click on the link so some of the best BIFL items are not included since they don't have commission or are in the used category.

Moccamaster, Chemex and V60 are all great options but very different. The Chemex and V60 will literally never fail unless you fail by dropping it but its manual pour over. I’ve been using a Chemex and V60 for over a decade and love it, but if you don’t want to learn the process or don’t have time or interest the Mocca is damn good. My mom has one and makes not great pre-ground taste pretty good.

Moccamaster. Add a smart plug to the outlet, et voila. I got the glass carafe because I only need it to stay hot for an hour. Those who drink coffee all day seem to prefer the thermal carafe. Set a reminder to descale every 3 months or when you open a new box of filters.

So one thing to consider is you should be using some sort of descaler with some frequency. For where I live, once every two months is fine. Your water may be more/less mineral heavy. The moccamaster is the right choice for bifl, but it will also stop worked if you don’t descale it. It may be worth descaling your current machine to see if that is the culprit.

I got a Moccamaster for the BIFL quality, and was shocked at how much better the coffee is too. It controls temperature carefully and ensures the hot water is spread evenly over the filter. Mine has been sent in to be repaired once, when the thermostat stopped working. Service was quick and it came back working like new.

1. Goruck GR1 - survived deployment and multiple field excursions. It’s been around the world and back with me and it looks like I got it out of the box yesterday. 2. Lodge cast iron and Dutch oven - never had a problem, period. 3. Tough to narrow down but probably my Moccamaster with a 1zpresso hand grinder. Great coffee every time. My only regret was a waxed canvas field jacket from Orvis but it’s no fault of the coat. It’s an awesome coat but I should’ve bought something warmer.

I just got a Moccamaster for Christmas. I was floored even the manuals were high quality. There was a separate one for each language. The paper they are made of is that thick glossy paper magazines used to be made of way back when I was a kid. BEST COFFEE EVER! Also very surprisingly I got some awesome retro looking salt n pepper grinders from TEMU. Ya'll I went back and bought a 2nd set I was so impressed. They are plastic but high quality and they can grind really fine.

I had to have one because my kids got one and I was jealous. I’ve had it for two years and really love it. Also have an old LaPavoni espresso machine right next to it, which I use, and there is a difference between the two, but if I had to pick one it would be the Moccamaster because it makes more at a time and is a little more hands off. Like the LaPavoni, the design doesn’t change and thus replacement parts are easy to get.

Pour over coffee (Hairo, Yeti, Ikea, OXO) with a gooseneck tea kettle French Press depending on the make (Frieling is very BIFL- made for cafe use) Moka Pot is very BIFL as well. Lots of options out there that are not a percolator. If you want a more traditional coffee maker there is Moccamaster.

That’s what the moccamaster is supposed to combat. The temperature control and the way the water sprinkles over the grounds is better than a cheap drip machine. We got ours last year and it is a noticeable improvement over our old Mr. Coffee. I drink volumes of coffee, so drip is the way for me (although I’ll do a moka pot Cuban coffee or cafe con leche when I want one).

Bodum French press: broke one years ago, re-bought and it’s too simple to fail. Technivorm Moccamaster: workhorse for daily coffee and I expect it to work with regular cleaning and descaling for years to come (my previous Bonavita coffee maker also held up for years). Breville smart grinder: holding up well now for years, I’m concerned the grinder teeth are starting to wear, but still works well every day. Trying out a secondhand Flair espresso maker but seems to be sturdy. Hamilton beach kettle: bought for $20 and I’ve wanted a fancier gooseneck one but this one won’t die and works perfectly.
