  I have a small power bank in my car. I throw it on the charger every 4 months to keep it topped up. I have a led usbA tab that I can attach to this to make it into a flashlight. I also have 1 flashlight in the trunk and one ready to be used in the glove compartment. Both use a single AA battery. I keep a pair of AA lithium batteries in the trunk and note the expiration date. Alternatively, you can buy a flashlight that takes an AA or a rechargable AA sized battery. The battery can be plugged directly to you a usb c cable to charge. Mora, stainless steel. They make it in carbon as well but I dont want to have to check it every few months to make sure it hasn't rusted. 2x 55gallon drum liner... many uses for this thing Water in a 40oz Klean Kanteen in the trunk. I dump this out every few months. I keep a filter too. I like the Klean Kanteen single wall becuase you can use it to boil if need be. Tourniquet in the glove box extra clothes and shoes that are comfortable if you have to hike it. tools webbing straps bic lighter and ferro rod.. some tinder like fat wood.

  I keep a mora classic every possible place I might need a knife. In my toolbox, tacklebox, glovebox, next to the bed, etc. I keep a North American Rescue bleeding control kit in most bags; a double sized kit in my car, and have attached one to every motorcycle I've owned. Lookup the 10 essentials for the boy scouts and it'll give you a great starting list for more specialized tools to be kept in lower quantities. Stormproof matches are pretty neat, but likely won't beat a Bic wherever you might need fire.

  I'd add [Varusteleka](https://www.varusteleka.com/) to the outdoors gear category, their Särmä line is pretty skookum. Fiskars (at least their knives and scissors) and Iittala are pretty good too. And you can't go wrong with Mora Knifes.

  Personally I don't consider new CKRT ls to be overly durable. I agree with many here that multi-tools are somthing he would probably have the most benefit from although they are outside your budget if bought new. Leathermans are good I have several, i would also consider a SOG power assist if you go the multi tool route. I find for heavier jobs the pliers with sogs compounding feature works wonders. I don't have a multi tool suggestion fot under $50 For strictly knives, fixed blades are going to inherently more durable. I have a suggestion alrhought again its closer to $100 new. Esee 4. Esee knives have a lifetime warranty, including if you snap the blade. The warranty is even transferable. (only applicable to their carbon blades) Under 50 look at Mora for fixed knifes, simple, plain, but amazing camping knives. The value is astounding. ontario rat (folder) is worth looking at, you can find it for under 50, doesnt look fancy but its a sturdy knive.

  Mora and opinel knives are my go suggestions for EDC and camping type uses. I don't know how the navy seals would be using them differently. Both are top quality and are well within your budget. Most top f the range knives will be a good bit over $50

  I did a thread on /r/knifeclub about what soldiers actually use knives for. The overwhelming consensus was that a tactical knife is really just a style thing. Actual soldiers use knives to open MRE's and other basic bullshit. I like mora knives for outdoor use.

  I second the recommendation for Mora. Really, for carbon steel blades and overall performance, you won't find better, as long as you don't mind the lack of bells and whistles. Their stainless are also very fine.

  If he is a cowboy out here (Northern Nevada represent!) a fixed blade in stainless wouldn't be a bad choice. It rains and snows here, so stainless might be the right call. As cliche as it sounds, mora knives are amazing workhorses
