Cheapest phone that isn't so old I can't download apps? iPhone 7 is causing me problems.
Boost has some pretty solid phones for $50-150, and their everything plan is $60or70 monthly. It piggybacks at&t's network. I used to use a Motorola they offered and the phone is pretty great. Lots of memory, good camera, low lag time, etc. I don't think the hardware changes have been wild enough to justify buying a top tier model vs a normal phone

Cheapest phone that isn't so old I can't download apps? iPhone 7 is causing me problems.
My Motorola Moto g 2024 cost me $40. Bump that up to $60 if you want the 2025, which might be worth it to extend its useful life. The important thing is to get it with a Tracfone plan. I pay less than $10 per month to use my phone by buying minutes, texts, and data as needed. I conserve data by getting a Wi-Fi password wherever I can and downloading maps at home over Wi-Fi and generally not using the internet on the phone unless it's connected to Wi-Fi.

What is the equivalent of "Apple removed 3.5mm jack" of your favorite products ?
My 2024 Motorola phone not only has an SD slot, but also (GASP!) a headphone jack! It's the Stylus, and frankly, is easily good enough to never look at a Samsung again. I know their $1500 phone is specc'ed better, but I don't game on my phone, and Google killed Cardboard, so who gives a damn? If I want portable gaming, I'll drop $400 on a Steam deck, pay $150 for this phone as a refurb, and have a much better gaming experience. Hell, I could top out the Steam Deck at $650 and still come out better financially.

What is the equivalent of "Apple removed 3.5mm jack" of your favorite products ?
Samsung removed the 3.5mm jack and microSD card slots (at first just on their S flagships, but not on their A series too). Thank goodness for Motorola, but their software support should be better. A lot of phones lock the bootloader now. Old Navy swapped their cool graphic tees with reinforced seams to boring black or white blanks with print on back in polyester (maybe I just got a really good one, maybe their children's range is just closer to what I like, but my "later gator" top from years ago is such a nicer design to what they have now. Apple used to have swappable RAM and storage on their MacBooks but ditched it after 2012

Motorola still have SD card slots in their phones.

MP3 Player- No Bluetooth Required
I’m using a moto x4 for this. Also have an iPod nano somewhere that still works, limited storage, though.

What kind of Iphone is actually gonna last?
BIFL and phones can’t comingle. Phones use such small wiring in ribbon cables and such, and that all heatrs up and cools down. That thermal cycling degrades it, makes it brittle, and prone to breaking. There really is *no* BIFL phone option, because of that. You have some really decent shots, but nothing for life. Apple, specifically, will support phones with OS and security updates for (if I remember correctly) 4 years after end of life. So, the iPhone 12, for example, end of life (production) was last year, so until about 2027. Or it’s 7 years of release, can’t remember. You might get lucky, might not, etc etc. Alternatively, you can look at Motorolla, I have been, they support 2 major OS updates and then 2 years security updates after release - so a phone in 2025 has a 4 year life. BUT it’s way cheaper, yaddah yaddah. So BIFL isn’t quite an option with phones regardless, you just have to pick the devil you want to live with.

This mouse is older than me, and it's still working as well as the day it left the factory.
I don't mind it. I'll happily be free advertising for Motorola, their phones are genuinely amazing.

Android phones that can last a long time?
Samsung and motorola. These phones never die... Just become obsolete due to security restrictions imposed by Android/google

Android phones that can last a long time?
Motorola. Wife and I got a Motorola stylus 5g 2023 and Motorola edge 2023. Running great. Still hold charge. Would recommend.

Android phones that can last a long time?
The Motorola phones are my favorite as far as just being tough. But I've been using a galaxy since my daughter was born for the better cameras and they've been pretty great... outside of the curved screen edge, fuck that noise.

Request - wireless landline phone
Try the Motorola long range units. The Panasonics are very picky about which NIMH battery you use. And when they get old, you only know because answering a call causes the phone to shut off. (Assuming that they still use replaceable NIMH like my older ones)

Anyone keep a “BIFL Roster”?
I have a 7 year old Motorola X4 still in service as an emergency phone that I use for travel. I throw in checked luggage and call it when I'm looking for it at the bag pickup, then it's my briefcase backup in case my primary is lost, stolen, or fully discharged. I also have a Motorola Power from 2021 which holds a charge for over a week and is fully functional.

I need to keep this phone for as long as possible!
Quite a lot seems like an understatement. I'm on my second Motorola and just got the Otterbox commuter case replaced under warranty. The last drop cracked the hard outer cover. OP is unlucky, outside with rocks a lot or extremely clumsy.

I've never had a phone less than 4 years. Otterbox commuter case always once they were so fragile. Formerly Samsungs and now on my second Motorola. Good luck.

Has everything we buy reduced in quality over time? Has anything increased in quality or stayed high quality and durable?
Samsung phones are terrible. I have no idea why they have the reputation they do. I have had really good luck with Motorola

Cell phones - what's the closest brand to a BIFL?
Why did your last one die? If you break hardware parts (the charger port, or the battery were gone f.ex.): Fairphone has replaceable parts, and how to videos on the website so you can replace at home. Did it get too slow? Buy a phone with a ton of RAM and the company promises long software support. All flagship phones of nice brands meet that description, but several recent Motorolas also meet that description, and they're far cheaper. Do you only call and text? Brick phones last three times as long as smartphones do, easily.
