  Good affordable espresso makers

  Just get a manual one. Any will do, Mr. Coffee, Bialetti, Grosche, etc. The first drip of coffee that comes out pour into a cup with sugar. If you whip the sugar/espresso mix correctly you’ll end up with a sweet froth to use on top of your espresso. That’s how the Italians I know make it.

  Mr Coffee Cafe Barista. It's definitely not the best quality espresso (which you probably won't get for $200) and coffee purists will correctly point out how it's the wrong boiler setup or whatever, but I really like mine and have had it for probably 7 years or so. I think it's probably similar quality wise to a Nespresso but it takes coffee grounds directly, not pods, so it's cheaper and less waste. The main driver for me is convenience. I have a friend who has a serious espresso machine and it takes 25 mins for the machine to warm up and pull a shot, which admittedly tastes way better.  But compare that to 5 mins for the Mr. coffee and I would definitely choose convenience every time.

  Bunn coffee makers no luck here

  Sounds frustrating. Bunn used to be super reliable but it looks like the newer models cut corners with more plastic parts. Sticking with older Bunns or switching to a brand like Mr. Coffee might be the safer bet for long term use.

  My grandfathers Mr. Coffee which was purchased in the early 70s was still brewing until he passed away in 2021. It now lives with my uncle and is continuing to brew coffee. It is older than every grandchild that my grandfather had. They only had to replace the pot because a cat knocked it down and it shattered in the kitchen when it was drying in the late 80s (I remember it happening because it was my cat). It was a CM-10 I think. That thing has made tens of thousands of cycles of coffee. Napkin math is that I remember my grandmother and grandfather brewing 2-4 pots a day (sometimes more if guests were over), and being that it was purchased new in what had to be 1973 I will say 3 pots on average per day. I will then go ahead and say 50 years from 73 to 23, just because I know it's been used a little less now with my uncle. This CM-10 must have brewed at least 52-55,000 pots of coffee. And it still works.

  Coffee machine with milk frother

  I have a Mr. Coffee espresso machine with a milk frother attachment that cost $30 and has survived longer than any Keurig or Nespresso I or family/friends have had, and it makes better coffee. Do with that information what you will. Being BIFL usually entails doing more maintenance and hands-on everyday tasks as opposed to convenience and disposability.

  Tiny coffee gadgets that make a big difference?

  Call me crazy but I’m a sucker for the old school metal espresso/coffee brewer that works by a campfire or on a stove top. Nothing fancy. I’ve paid for 200$ coffee machines before but for about ten years I’ve had a Mr Coffee coffee maker that cost about $30. It has an on/off switch and a timer. That’s it.

  Coffee maker Recs Moccamaster or Bunn for smaller pots?

  Had a couple Bunn, loved the speed of them, but it isn’t bifl or at least not for me. Also if you don’t brew a pot every day the water will evaporate and you end up with stronger than normal, smaller batch of coffee. Been using a Mr Coffee for years, it does what it does, just slower than a Bunn due to no preheated water on standby. Recently bought a Moccamaster but it my weekend car, so to speak. Been buying fresh roaster beans just for it and experiment with the expensive stuff. Our weekday go juice is pre ground Starbucks French roast in the Mr Coffee. Our

  I’ve got a Mr. coffee drip that’s at least 30 years old. I’m actually the second owner, as it was my mom’s divorce present in the early 90s and she passed it down to me when she upgraded. As for single cups; a ceramic pour over is perfect as u/legitimate_eye8494 mentioned. I have one for my desk since we’re allowed to have electric kettles and it’s perfect for a single cup as needed throughout the day.

  Yeah you can, i have a mr coffee that's 8 years old and I've replaced multiple parts, our local ace hardware carries many of them. It's also super easy to disassemble and clean if it gets honey spilled out of the cupboard and into the buttons, ask me how I know. And even if you can't find a replacement you can buy a second one and use the old one for parts. I'm a coffee nerd but I get up at 3:45 for work and I like to have my coffee brewed and ready. Moccamaster makes a fine machine but a refurbished one is 10x the price and doesn't have a timer.

  It looks like a lot of people have missed the spirit of your question. You want something simple that just works, probably go with a basic drip machine, like a Bunn or Mr. Coffee. The cheapness in this case is a reflection of the basic construction, there are few parts to break and they really do last a long time without any maintenance. French press is a good option too, but I personally don’t like the intense flavor you get from one.

  yes, but If you just want a no-nonsense coffee maker, check out the Mr. Coffee 12-Cup or even the Black+Decker ones. Super basic but get the job done without constant failures. Nothing fancy, but they last longer than you’d expect.

  While they are amazing machines that last forever and make a pot in a fraction of time that a Mr. Coffee does, they are also gigantic. Unless you have unlimited counter space, I think you’d be better off selling this one and use the money to buy a new more consumer friendly model.

  Top BIFL Household Items for Starting Over

  Check out thrift stores for all of this stuff (which may be difficult in a part of the country that just had a natural disaster.) 1. Corelle or Corningware dishes (I just found corelle plates at the thrift store this weekend for $1 a piece!) 2. Bedding, rugs, towels...Costco. 3. As for kitchen appliances - I just buy whatever America's Test Kitchen recommends. They test the $$(# out of kitchen gear and I 100% trust what they say. All the things I have purchased based on their recommendations have been amazing. 4. I use a cheap Mr. Coffee 5 cup coffee maker and I'm happy with it. My Keurig died after 10 years (honestly a good run for how much I used it while raising babies) and I replaced it with the cheapest thing Target sold. If I get 5 years out of it I'll be happy. If I wanted BIFL coffee I would do a simple pour over - my aunt and uncle have the same pour over pot since Ronald Reagan was president. I am sorry that this happened to you. It's a hard thing to recover from but I know you and your family will rise from it.

  Nespresso is about the closest to actual espresso you’re going to get from pods, because they actually work up a pressure for the coffee rather than the kcups. The espresso you get from kcups is just the “strong” setting where it pumps slower to let it sit in the grounds longer. Personally I like my nespresso because I use it often enough to justify it, but not often enough to be hurt by the cost of the pods. Good news is you can ship used pods back to them for recycling and get high discounts. If you’re doing pods I’d recommend a keurig, simply because they will have the best support for warranty, replacement parts and for the filters. For actual BIFL coffee making that’s not using plastic waste for everything, get a hand grinder and either a pour over or French press. Or go with an aeropress as there’s only one “moving” part and I’ve yet to hear bad things about them. If you don’t care about plastic waste, just get a keurig and do the maintenance routine, or go for a basic Mr. Coffee brewer. You can even get the smaller one that only does a few cups at a time. Espresso machines require more work than most people realize, and that’s why we don’t care about spending a few dollars at a coffee shop.

  Need a Coffee Maker Recommendation Under $100 CAD

  As it’s easy to go down the coffee rabbit hole, I believe in the same approach as I take with tools. When buying your first one, go bare minimum and upgrade if you ever need. Sometimes the cheapest simplest thing meets your needs just fine so no need to go overboard in the long run. If you’re looking for straight up drip coffee, I shit you not, I’ve got an $18 Mr Coffee that I bought for travel a long time ago that became my daily coffee maker when we broke our cuisineart years ago (that was in us, I’m sure it’d still be fine if we didn’t break it ourselves). The Mr Coffee makes a fine cup of coffee and I’ve seen it suggested by plenty of baristas. Simple and cheap is a great place to start. You can certainly go for the pour-over route or aeropress or French press, or Mokapot. All make really great cups of coffee, but considering you’re going from drive thru to thing, convenience is going to be a factor for you. All of those require some bit of technique and experimentation. A drip is just the most hands off operation, which might be what you’re looking for. If you’re looking to really get into coffee though and want a new hobby, then by all means, go for one of the others.

  Need a Coffee Maker Recommendation Under $100 CAD

  We bought a 10-cup drip Mr Coffee with an insulated carafe and reusable filter about 18 years ago. We use it every morning, and my husband pours the last few ounces of (still hot) coffee from it into a mug in the early afternoon. We clean it with vinegar every time the indicator light comes on, but are still pleasantly surprised at how long it’s lasting! (Had broken one too many glass carafes before getting this machine!)

  What's the oldest item you still use daily that has withstood the test of time, and what's its story?

  A thermos type coffee carafe with a drip funnel which takes a 6” paper filter, have used it for over 35 years and it makes wonderful coffee. Have to order the 6” paper filters because all the stores in our area stopped carrying them, only 4” ones are available. It was a gift and have never seen another one like it. We use a Mr. Coffee grinder because others we tried are no good.
