Good sling bags for men?
Avoid the minimalist fashion slings with glued strap anchors first because those peel fast and fall apart before you know it. Finding a sling that won’t blow out in a year is harder than it should be... it’s messy trying to sort through all the cheap ones. And the strap hardware. Cheap bags use zinc pot metal buckles that crack if you look at them wrong so try to get something with acetal or stainless hardware with no seams because that stuff stays reliable and you won’t be fiddling with repairs all the time and it just works in daily use Stiching matters more than whatever logo they slapped on it, so look for bartacks at the strap points and bound interior seams instead of raw edges. If you want actual models that aren't trash, the Tom Bihn Side Kick and the Mystery Ranch Full Moon are solid picks.

All these answers are just to waste your time until you realize the answer was Mystery Ranch all along. Seriously, anything from their USA-made military/fire lines are absolutely where its at, and will run circles around the larger majority of every single other brand listed in this thread.

Savotta and Mystery Ranch. Mystery Ranch if you get the Military/Fire lines, since those are still USA made and heavy duty. The 3DAP is an amazing daily pack. I have a Komodo Dragon I've used for years and taken all over the world. If I hadn't gone the MR route I definitely would've gone for Savotta, and still might in the future - all their other gear I have is absolutely bomb-proof.

Mystery Ranch or Fjallraven?
I bought a Mystery Ranch before the Ranchero came out and I’ve seen the Ranchero in person. I love my Mystery Ranch and I think the Ranchero is an improvement on it with the added features and similar durability. I would have bought the Ranchero if I didn’t already have a Mystery Ranch.

Need Help Choosing a Backpack
Best of luck. My last recommendation over the tomtoc would be Thule. They make some extremely high quality bags if you don’t mind the synthetics. By that same token Mystery Ranch is probably even better than Thule, but very different looks. One last plug for Fjallraven: since you mentioned they have a store near you, if you want your bag waxed they will do it for you at the store for free, whenever you want (same with jackets and pants and stuff). And they also do repairs for cheap, usually in their stores. So ask if they have a repair shop in your store and you might be set for good.

Parent daypack/backpack for hot weather
Second this! I tried a Mystery Ranch pack last year and wish I’d done it sooner. The back panel design really does make a huge difference for air flow and comfort on sweaty days, especially compared to the typical “breathable” options out there. I’ve also had an Osprey for years (love it for bigger hikes), but for everyday parent duty in the heat, Mystery Ranch has been a game changer for me.

looking for a backpack for college
Honestly, I suggest you lay out what you need to carry to get a weight/volume estimate. Then hit up MEC (Canada) or REI (US). Try on the various day packs and hiking packs. Fill them with the provided sand bags and walk around. All packs will fit differently for different people. There’s no one size fits all. Brand wise, Mystery Ranch, Osprey, Fjallraven are generally great. Do you need it to be water proof or have a cover? How much organization and pockets? Padded laptop section? Separate area for gym clothes?

After my Disneyworld with my family my old Jansport backpack just isn't cutting it anymore. Time for me to get an upgrade.
Been using a Mystery Ranch Urban Assault for a few years, both work and leisure. Very comfy on the shoulders and a top compartment for keys/wallet etc. Worth a look into, my work one has been through hell and is still perfect. Caveat is it has a slightly different zip formation which may take a bit of getting used to (packing/opening) but definitely recommended.
