What product category has gotten worse in quality, even at the premium level?
Then start learning about it. It’s a massive world and no one can just list off the best five retailers because there aren’t any. You just have to start dipping your toes into the broader fashion world. Pop into r/HeritageWear and r/JapaneseStreetwear for a start. Dive down the YouTube rabbit hole. Japanese fashion in general is very focused on quality (their denim scene is insanely good), but there are good manufacturers in China like Bronson MFG, in Canada like Naked and Famous, in the USA like Brave Star, England like Maharishi and Story MFG, in India like Garuda, and international brands like Polo RL and Levi’s still make plenty of great clothes if you know what to look for. These are just a few off the top of my head but it’s a wide world when you start looking past what’s available at your local mall.

Brands That Used to Be BIFL — But Aren't Anymore?
Maybe, but OP is talking about going from wranglers and your recommendations are pretty damn pricey for someone used to buying wranglers. N&F and Unbranded are good bang for your buck, imo. Personally, I can't justify $200-$300 on a pair of jeans.

Brands That Used to Be BIFL — But Aren't Anymore?
You get what you pay for, and considering how easy it is to get a pair of jeans made out of Kiahara denim from various manufacturers, there's zero excuse to keep paying Levi's for anything. AFAIK, you can get a pair of Naked & Famous jeans, which are sewn in Montreal out of the aforementioned denim, for \~$150USD (https://tateandyoko.com/collections/naked-and-famous-easy-guy/products/easy-guy-indigo-selvedge) and those will last you several years.

Brands That Used to Be BIFL — But Aren't Anymore?
r/rawdenim might be worth searching. Naked & Famous and Unbranded are good brands with decent pricing. There are very few denim mills left in the United States and I'm fairly certain the ones that are left do not produce raw selvedge denim. You can find quality jeans made in the US, but the denim will likely be sourced from Japan. Some brands still have some jeans made from dead stock raw denim from cone mills in North Carolina, but sizing will be limited. Brave Star Selvedge has some. After that's gone, they're either getting it from Cone Mills in Mexico or a Japanese mill. Gustin has American made denim and may also have us made dead stock denim. Those all have options under $200 (sometimes under $100, if you're patient and check regularly for sales) and they size up to 40-44.

BIFL Jeans the Community Recommends?
Kapital, Pure Blue Japan, Japan Blue, Samurai Jeans, graphzero, Full Count, Momotaro Jeans, Oni Denim, Evisu, TCB, etc. Basically any manufacturer that [Denimio](https://www.denimio.com/en_US/home/) would carry. All made in Japan. Many based in Kojima, some in Osaka. If Naked and Famous has something novel, you can give it a try. Tate and Yoko’s shop is in Montreal, however, they do not have a friendly exchange-return policy. Be aware when ordering.

BIFL Jeans the Community Recommends?
Unbranded Brand - The cheaper naked and famous. Someone already said Naked and Famous. They’re great for good quality but really interesting fabrics as well. They generally use Japanese fabrics and make the jeans in Canada. Unbranded generally has the jeans made in other countries but still made using quality fabric and well made. Both brands ship from the exact same warehouse as well.

BIFL Black Stretch Jeans
Naked and Famous make stretch selvedge denim. They are known for great quality. If you don't have $200 to spend, Uniqlo is selling 99% cotton 1% spandex black selvedge jeans that are decent and only cost about $60. Can't say they're BIFL though.

NYT just put out a list of their BIFL picks
Yes, women are used to calling Levi’s as “high quality”. Hiut Denim, Railcar Refined Goods, Momotato, Samurai, graph zero, Japan Blue, Kapital, Dawson Denim, Naked and Famous, etc., all make high quality jeans. Hiut even comes with a lifetime warranty. Denimio is a good place to start.

Men’s Jeans Recommendations
I’ve been wearing Naked and Famous the last couple years after moving away from Levi’s. The weird guy fit is pretty much the same as the 511 but the denim choices are fantastic. And the prices aren’t as steep as Iron Heart or the like.

Men’s Jeans Recommendations
Sounds like we’re built similarly. I love my Naked and Famous Weird guys and currently wearing 25oz Iron Heart 777s that are a similar cut. They’re expensive but it took me years to blow them out with almost daily wear. I get them repaired when they develop a hole and keep on trucking.

What used to be buy it for life but is now more questionable?
There are other brands that are much cheaper that last forever. I've never had a pair of naked and famous jeans give out on me.

Jeans with lifetime warranty or lifetime repairs in Midwest USA?
Gotcha. Well, look around r/rawdenim and their wiki page. If you want colors, look at duck canvas. If you want them to last, you need a heavier fabric as close to 100% cotton as possible. Here are some good brands: - Naked & Famous - Braveheart - Ironheart - Samurai (Japanese)

Freenote Denim Collab w/ Red Wing Shoe Co.
I dunno about this brand but raw denim in general is going to last a really really long time, seriously good quality stuff. Maybe it's just how I live but I've had like, $50?, pair of Levis get rekt in a couple months, and a pair of N&F $120 jeans last like 3 years and still going strong
