My favorite picks have been: Patagonia outer apparel, YETI ramblers, and promotional socks from Sock Labs. Something to keep me warm at night In my tent.
I use a camping blanket / sleeping quilt instead of a sleeping bag because I hate feeling constricted. Mine is from JR's R Better, which appears to just be some guy sewing awesome quilts in his garage. It has loops to secure at the edges in cold situations. From my understanding, once a sleeping bag is compressed below you, it doesn't do much to keep you warm from below anyway. A good camping pad (or OP seems to be using a cot) will keep you off the ground. I have camped down to 20 degrees F using it and was comfortable. The main thing about a camping quilt is making sure you don't get drafts at the edge, so tuck under the edges of the sleeping pad and secure under the pad if appropriate. (I use a bit of Paracord) I also boil water before bed and fill a Nalgene bottle to keep at my feet.

I have a few Nalgene, a Stanley-style insulated cup that accommodates drinking either with or without a straw, and a Corkcicle screw top that I received as a gift many years ago. I use the Stanley-style in my car while running errands. The Corkcicle gets filled and put on my bedside table every night, and the Nalgene is usually what I use everywhere else. I also have one glass flip-top bottle sheathed in silicone that was my water bottle in the office when I was working.

We used Nalgenes for decades and still do for camping. I wanted to get away from plastic and wanted an insulated option, so switched to the Thermo flasks from Costco. We've had a couple sets in rotation for years now. When working out, I find I need a controlled flow mouthpiece as I sometimes aspirate water, which always results in an instant asthma attack when it happens. So I picked up an Owala this spring after my daughter got one as a gift. I really appreciate the mouthpiece design and it's solved my aspiration issue, so it's become my primary bottle.

Their smaller 16oz ones are great for kids too. I refuse to pay $25 for some stainless one with a plastic/rubber flip lid that gets nasty and doesn’t fit right after you wash it. The Nalgene are cheaper and last way better.

I still have Nalgenes from decades ago, and insulated thermoses. From the more recent bottle explosions, I prefer Klean Kanteens for durability and swapping out lids. For non-insulated, anything with an Avex cap as they are spill resistant and usually come with a “safety” to truly leak-proof it.

I have a lot of water bottles that I find for free around my uni. (they've been there for a week or more when I take them, I'm not snatching them as soon as someone leaves the room) Favourites thus far are 1. **Owala**, I have a insulated and non-insulated one, they rock, the straw really works for me. Had for 3 years now and they are glorious. It kept ice for 48hrs. Only thing is it's a bit hard to clean and remove mould from. **8/10** 2. **Random plastic cup** with lid and straw that reads "INSTALL smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and check every month". Ride or die. Comes with me everywhere. not even remotely leakproof. Had for 8 years and I would die for her. **9/10** 3. **Nalgene**. 'Nuff said. Sturdy, reliable, covered in stickers. Had since middle school. Easy to clean, easy to forget to clean and accidentally drink mould for months. **7/10** 4. **Hydroflask**. I use it for tea, its great and leakproof but the one that I have it TOO insulated and I can't ever drink my tea because it's too hot. Doesn't get much use, had for 7 years. **5/10**

I'll always be a Nalgene loyalist, but once on a trip to Australia I picked up a similar type of bottle made by Kathmandu. It's basically a 750ml Nalgene but it's tall and skinny, so it fits in cupholders and in the little bottle pockets on day packs. All the branding and markings have rubbed off on it but the bottle has been in continuous use now for six years.

Takaya makes awesome lids, with a little mouth piece that you can expose with a smaller screw cap. They last and last. A little nicer than Nalgene because they're easy to drink out of, but it's still a wide mouth lid so you can put ice in there.

I have two bottles. My main bottle is an 800 ml stainless steel bottle from Kivanta (but there are many other manufacturers). It's uncoated, hygienic and easy to clean, I can literally boil it in water. I always find that water from stainless steel bottles tastes the freshest and 800 ml is the perfect size to fit in any hotel sink for refilling. It had some big dents from when I dropped it, but I was able to use a wooden rod to pop them out. So far, it's holding up pretty well and never leaked. I believe I've had it for over 6 years now. For a cap, I use polypropylene, because the stainless steel caps are not dishwasher save, and sometimes I prefer a sport cap. But if you would want to avoid micro plastics, stainless steel caps are a good option. My secondary bottle is a Nalgene widemouth bottle. This one I almost exclusively use for refilling, so I can also share water with others without contamination. I also found that, since it's made of plastic, it makes for a good hot water bottle when camping. In fact, it insulates so well that I can safely carry it when it's filled with boiling water. That means I could also use it for tea. But my main use is carrying more water.

I basically swap between it, a larger version I got from Steel Beast, and a 48oz Nalgene for backpacking. Given the mold growth Ive found in Nalgenes before, Im really more partial to the steel. Been debating getting a yeti I can take to the gym.

Through various needs and gifts, I have acquired RTIC, Yeti, Hydroflask, Nalgene, Owala, and Hydrojug. Honestly all have been great. They each have their pros, design wise. I kind of avoid the Nalgene now because of microplastics, but keep it due to the memories with it. I’d say Hydroflask does straw top best, Yeti does chug cap best, RTIC is a ‘cheaper’ brand that works just as well, and the Owala is great because it’s both chug and straw, both completely covered by the secure cap. I have the Hydrojug stainless shaker and it has seemed to show its beatings the most. I’d say purchase based on cap style and color you like the most, I think most of these brands will last a very long time.

I do love my wide mouth nalgene, but it doesn't insulate. For about 10+ years I've been using a Bubba (looks like a mini keg, but way taller) I have put this thing thru so much abuse and its still water-tight. I kayak, I mountain bike, ive dropped it down 400m of rock-face by accident and its still water tight. The one draw back, it has really poor grip, the whole thing is almost slick, but ive taken to using the colourful elastic bands from vegetables around it for added grip when wet. Currently there's 4 blue, one giant purple and one long yellow ones. BTW, dont put carbonated liquids in, it'll burst the top, but for coffee/tea/water, I love the thing.

In college, a Nalgene. For my first “big kid” job, I had one those amazingly annoying light up Bluetooth bottles. I appreciated the reminders and the fluid intake tracking. Others at work were distracted by the sudden flashing. Now? I have a free Simple Modern tumbler from a work trip with hot/cold lids and straws. I lost my one Owala somewhere in the house - I love that one for throwing it in a bag and rolling out of the house. My true ride or die though? 1/2 gallon Stanley jug with the flip straw. Makes a great growler too. 🍺 tl;dr: I didn’t go overboard; still too many even with this list. My stickered heavy-ass Stanley has been the best.

I started with Nalgene and then switched to hydro flask because plastic. But I’ve gone back to the Nalgene. It’s lighter and I never have to worry about a moldy seal or even leaks. It’s simple and it is a great way to carry around a large amount of water.

I've also got an MSR Miniworks water filter that attaches to this Nalgene model. I use the filter when I travel which is especially useful if my hotel doesn't provide free water bottles or filtered water in the gym.

I graduated highschool in 2013 and remember being one of the only kids with a water bottle I carried all day. We didn't even have working water fountains when I was there and the school didn't install water bubblers until a few years after I graduated, so if you wanted more water you basically had to pack it all yourself 😭 My go tos are usually a 32oz Nalgene and my Hydroflask if I want something insulated. I have nerve issues in my hands and drop & knock over my big hydroflask all the time and it works just fine. Has lasted me 2 baseball seasons being lugged around in my car and baseball bag and occasionally getting knocked over onto concrete in the dugout and still works perfectly. I think Yeti makes great water bottles too if you want insulated. Yeti cups are indestructible and if you register your products on their site they'll send you free stickers which I just think is neat. I tend to buy mine at TJ Maxx. I always find Yeti cups and Hydroflasks there for cheaper than retail. Also starting to see Stanley cups there now that the trend has died down a bit. I don't own one, I think those giant stanleys just look ridiculous and you can't fit them in a regular water bottle pocket of a backpack. But I did put a Stanley 8oz flask and their french press coffee maker on my Xmas list this year. And I have a Stanley thermos which is notorious for being BIFL.

Yessssss! I tried lots of different water bottles from 2005-2015, but nalgenes worked the best for me in terms of being reliable and easy to clean. As much as I'd also like something insulated, my brain *needs* to see the liquid through the water bottle as a regular reminder to hydrate, so I make do and enjoy my nalgenes as they are.

Ya know, I've got Kleen Kanteen (and/or some similar-ish alternative brands or knock-offs) - your basic metal water bottle with a well fitting screw-in top/stopper ... and at that, various types of tops/stoppers. And you know what ... I didn't buy a single one of 'em. People seem to lose 'em or give 'em away every once in a while ... I think I've got a half-dozen or more of 'em now. Some of the cheap knock-offs have crud threading and tops - avoid those. But all the rest seem perfectly fine. And I'm guessing they're BIFL. Though not totally indestructible, they're pretty dang durable. "Biggest" issue I've had, and it's only minor. sometimes I drop the dang thing onto a hard surface (rock, floor, cement, whatever) when it's got fair bit of water in it, it dents the bottom a bit, then it doesn't sit flat. Well, that's an easy fix - some gentle whacks to the bottom with a rubber mallet, and then that's again quite flat enough and all is fine. And given how durable they are, I'd say I probably have more than a lifetime supply of 'em at this point. So, yeah, ... *I* should probably start giving some of 'em away at this point. And, you know what? For the most part I don't find a lot of plastic water bottles that folks are giving away that are in good shape. Though there are some good/better quality ones (a friend did give me one nice quite large one, I believe Nalgene 1.5L, I sometimes take and use it, but especially with that weight when relatively full, I'm always concerned I might dro and crack it), I think a lot of 'end up broken (e.g. dropped and cracked) - so that's probably why I see far fewer of those being given away - I don't think they last as long/well ... at least with heavy use and the occasional accidental drop or the like. There's also the flexible bladder type bottles. I have a very small number of those, and they may be handy for some things, but I don't think they're that durable - so I wouldn't call 'em BIFL, though some may be significantly better and longer lasting (better quality) than others. I think I'd probably only use 'em for lighter more casual use, and probably wouldn't be inclined to rely heavily upon them.

Not true. My Nalgene I had since the early 2000’s dropped on pavement and burst into numerous plastic shards. Now I use one of those YETI tumblers that someone gifted me 7 years ago or so and yes it’s def dented on the exterior but the interior has held up well and still keeps my water super cold. I do still have a backup Nalgene that I’ll use on mountain hikes to reduce the weight.

My small Nalgene bottle. Something about the plastic just seems to much sturdier than other bottles, the wide mouth opening is nice too. And I have the tiny size which is convenient for bringing with me on small errands. For insulated bottles - I have an old Starbucks tumbler I bought maybe 9 years ago that I still use. It has a simple flip top opening, keeps my drink hot, is just large enough for how much coffee I drink, easy to clean, and doesn't leak. The design is starting to chip but so far I haven't felt the need to replace it.

Camelbak Chute 40oz. I've had it for probably a decade now. Its been through countless retail truck unloads. A season on a farm where it spent a month under a pile of tomato vines we dumped an was found after some one was turning over the compost pile with a tractor. And a couple years working in a clay warehouse. I switched to a Nalgene recently since I have to park a few blocks away from work sometimes and the Chute is a stainless steel vacuum insulated tank in its 40oz form. I still use the Chute a ton though. I leave the Nalgene on my work backpack and use the Chute around the house, road trips, left in the car while running errands. Basically anything but work or when I have to carry it around. Love it!

I was gifted a Nalgene plastic bottle with the strapped lid, a simple clear plastic body with measurements and a sky blue lid. I figured out I could clip it to my belt loop via carabineer in highschool, often walked around with that banging into my hip and thigh. A couple years later I bought a few more with variations including a narrow mouth and a twice as large (it was longer not wider) version. I still have all of them, they work fine. The only consistent issue I had with the Nalgene bottles was they sweat buckets. Any ice in them was gone quickly and soaked whatever it touched. A few years ago Amazon turned me on to ThermoFlask/Hydroflask. I did get a couple of 20-24 ounce Hydroflask brand insulated bottles alongside a few lid options like a straw, a Propel-like titty-nipple to suck on as well, etc. but I wound up using these 40 ounce ThermoFlask bottles with basic lids. I have two of them, one white and one blue, one meant for work and the other for home use. Being diabetic on medications I need to drink quite a bit more water than I would usually drink and having a measurement reference that I can easily identify as mine and only mine has been helpful both for my health but peace of mind. I'm not drinking 8 glasses of water a day, I'm trying to aim for 1-1.5 of these 40 ounce bottles per day and it helps keep the ice for hours longer, close to a day. I can't speak to all insulated bottles and qualities between manufacturers, I'm not testing these things independently for comparison. I can tell you that I bought both of the bottles October 2019 (reviewed my Amazon purchase history lol) and both are still in fine condition though the blue one has developed a couple of small rusty spots on the inside bottom. The white one is in a little better shape though both have some small dents from drops and whatnot. I would recommend them based on my experiences. In the interest of disclosure I will be clear that I actively avoid abuse. Not just of people but tools and possessions. So I haven't run over my ThermoFlask bottles, not dropped off a building, not thrown across a parking lot, and not used as an improvised melee weapon. I've dropped both on many surfaces from asphalt and concrete to grass and tile and other than dents that aren't immediately noticeable unless you look at the underside, I'm looking at my blue bottle right now and I can barely find scratches. I'm pretty confident that with the lid changes (they're plastic) these bottles could last me the rest of my life.

I’ve had various water bottles for years, under armor was a fave for almost a decade but I had to replace them every year or two. But this year I switched to Nalgene for the first time since I was a kid, based on a recommendation I got from here, and I am never going back. They are durable, convenient, good for hot or cold, and I don’t miss the vacuum sealed lining as much as I thought I would. I need to refill my water fast enough that not having ice last for a million years doesn’t matter to me. A few hours of ice is just right, and if I need it for longer, I can just freeze half the bottle the night before and I’m set. To top it all off, I’ve heard the company will replace a bottle of broken, even if it’s years old. What an amazing bottle!

The Takeya 17oz Traveler Leakproof Coffee Mug is the one I grab most often. (IMO it's a water bottle, NOT a coffee mug.) I know they're unpopular because the carry ring breaks easily, which makes the lid unusable, but I never use the ring so it doesn't matter for me. It's an comfortable size to carry around and the flip lid with pour spout is the easiest to drink from while driving. I have a couple of Simple Modern straw tumblers I cycle through at work and home. They keep water cold and that makes it easier for me to drink when I really lack the will to ~~live~~ keep myself hydrated. That being said, my husband and I stan our Nalgenes that we've had for years and years now. He broke the lid holder on one of his and ended up making a replacement with string and superglue because he likes the bottle so much.

Nalgene Oasis It won't fit a cup holder, but I don't care about that. I don't drink and drive. It's non-insulated but I don't like wasting space on insulation. I like it because it's durable and it'll nest into nearly anything designed for ubiquitous military canteens. I say "nearly" because the tolerances can differ depending on country of origin, and quality control. Pouches, cups, cook sets, it's pretty universal. It's one of those bottle shapes that tricks the brain into thinking it carries less liquid than it does. Looks small-ish, carries a liter.

I’m not an absolute loyalist but I have one of each type and rotate them by use. Stanley cup is my daily driver around the house, I find it more convenient/encouraging for me to consume water. Hydroflask is for times when I want my drink to stay cold/hot for a while. And the classic Nalgene for everything else. I have some of the others that I’ve collected of the years but those only get pulled out for overflow.

I have 2 Nalgene wide mouth 32 ounce bottles that I’ve had for years. They get put in the freezer, they get filled with boiling water. I use them for hiking as well as everyday use. They don’t leak. They are practically indestructible.

Longest? I have Nalgenes I bought in the 1980s still. They are yellowed but work. But I don't use them much anymore. My favorites now are all Yeti, Hydroflask, RTIC, and Kleen Kanteen. Every one was thrifted, so cost my $6 or less. All are basically the same insulated stainless construction; the only meaningful differences are the tops. They work great. I have a bunch since I keep them at home, at work, in the truck, and we're using them with the entire family. That said, I have a dozen or more that need to go to Goodwill, mostly plastic ones I'll never use again. Most of those were gimmes from work or conferences.

I’ve had a Nalgene for 15 years. It’s a champ and survived through years of soccer games and being slammed around in my backpack but it doesn’t fit in my car cupholder and isn’t insulated. So now I prefer my hydroflask to stay cold all day but it doesn’t handle all the falls quite so well. The bottom is no longer flat . But I continue to use both all the time they still serve their purpose.

Small base fits easily in backpack pockets. Squeezable Sturdy Screw top fits common water filter threads. 1L holds a good amount of water (approx 1L worth) Nalgene doesn’t squeeze, hard to get in/out of pockets. But you can put hot water in to warm up at night. Of course the other benefit of smart water bottles is that you can toss one when it gets busted and just grab a new one at any store. But not contentious hikers don’t like that, hence MGO bottle.

I was *finally* able to switch to a reusable bottle when I received a 22oz glass W&P water bottle. It’s my absolute favorite. https://wandp.com/products/glass-water-bottle It’s durable, has held up well to years of use, imparts zero taste to your water, and “drinks” well (the flow from the top is perfect). 22oz isn’t huge, so I do also have my big 32oz Nalgene chug-top that I keep bedside or bring with me if I feel I’m gonna need a lot of water, but I mostly use my W&P at home and work where it’s easy to refill with filtered water. It may be worth trying, but if she really doesn’t have any interest in switching, it won’t go far. Maybe buy one or two for the home, and you start using it. If she’s willing to try it out she may find that it’s a great replacement. I too was stuck on refilling my plastic bottles for way too long, but I’m so happy to have found this bottle, greatly reduce my plastic waste, and not have to lug cases of water home ever again.

The (new?) nalgene with the flip top locking lid fits my subaru cup holders but it's 24oz. The larger one certainly won't fit. I do like mine a lot, it's relatively easy to clean. My only gripe is that it *can* grow mold on the tiny silicone nub in the lid that makes it leakproof. I'm unsure if it's replaceable. The only reason mine grew mold is because my kid used it at the costco food court and put lemonade instead of water in there then forgot it in the car for a weekend

The only clear bottles that come to mind for ease of use, capacity, and ease of cleaning are Nalgenes, but they don't fit in 99% of cup holders. I'd rather it fit than be clear, personally.

I bought 100 (hyperbole) steel, glass, plastic water bottles, but none ever were pleasant enough to want to carry around. Six months ago my husband bought me a nalgene narrow mouth. Hasn’t left my side since. For whatever reason it is my goldilocks “just right”.

\- **Bag:** Timbuk2 Classic Messenger bag. I've had mine for 6 years used as a full-time commute/computer bag, occasional range bag, then as a diaper bag for a few years, then as my fishing bag most recently. The only issue I've had is a broken buckle but that was my fault closing it in a car door. **- Multi-tool:** Leatherman multi-tools: My dad had the same one 20+ years before he died. I've been using a Free p4 model for 4ish years with no issues through a lot of both hard use and daily use type tasks, and very little care (re-tightened screws twice and apply a little oil occasionally). **- Knife:** Essee Izula 2, affordable, great lifetime warranty, small enough to EDC and for delicate tasks, tough enough to baton wood, the blade shape and size make it very versatile. Does require basic care (dry and oil) and you may not like the sheath that comes with it. **- Wool blend Socks:** My smart wools have lasted me like 5 years, my wigwams are my most comfortable, my darn toughs are also great. **- Good underwear:** My ExOfficios have lasted seemingly forever. I've been married 9 years today and I'm pretty sure a few of the sadder pairs in my dresser are almost that old. Saxx are incredibly comfy but don't last. **- Light Jacket:** I've had a Patagonia Jacket since 2009 that is one of my more used jackets, patagonia repaired the main zipper two years ago for free/cheap. Jack Wolfskin wind shirt/jacket, also had since 2009 and it's been pretty brutally treated through Military stuff, backpacking, a short stint doing heavy pipefitting, and a lot of hunting/fishing. I've literally just partially retired it in the last few weeks for a Helikon-Tex Woodsman Anorak, I'll still keep the wolfskin for a farm work layer until it completely dies. **- Wallet:** I've had a Rogue Industries front pocket wallet as my only wallet since 2015, the only reason I need to replace it after 10 years is because I got the nylon one instead of the leather, pretty sure the leather would last at least 15-20 years. **- Water bottles/thermos:** Classic Nalgene bottles are very rugged and last forever. Classic Stanley thermos, it will take a house fire to kill it. My insulated Kleen Kanteen has also taken tremendous abuse and clumsiness.

On cold nights you can put boiled water in them (and then in a beanie or something) and they don’t melt. It’s like a hot water bottle, and then you have clean water to drink the next day! But I used to use them exclusively as a daily.

Finally on its 3 millionth fall on a bathroom tile floor, it broke! lol didn't even know it was possible for it to smash like that. Anyway, after scouring the internet as well, settled for a 64oz insulated klean kanteen all metal (cap is silicone interior and plastic exterior) extra wide mouth bottle. I engraved it too! I love that the simple Nalgene ranks so highly. I lost one on a bikepacking trip and I was legit depressed about it for a bit. CNOC has a bottle coming out right about now that I think, based on my experience with their bladders and some interviews with the owner, will rise to that level. It has the dimensions similar to a smart water bottle but is sturdier and won't leach micro plastics.

That’s why I have had one Nalgene and one insulated 18oz Klean Kanteen for like 10 years. I just recently added a 64oz insulated Klean Kanteen to keep in my car to refill my child’s summer water bottle (kids these days are intensely hydrated), and a 36oz insulated straw cup Klean Kanteen for myself because I got tired of fumbling with the screw cap on my bottle every time I was thirsty in the car (which is 2.5 hours a day) and of running out constantly. I got my first water bottle, a Nalgene, almost 50 years ago for scouts. At that point in time, they were repurposed lab equipment loved because they never leaked. I still have several that I've been using for many years. I prefer metal water bottles for day-to-day use, but there is no need for the extra weight for long hikes. It is interesting that they are still near the top of the list.

The “best” water bottle is going to be context dependent. I would never want to use a Nalgene for my day-to-day water bottle because it doesn’t keep water cold and if you put ice in it it will sweat all over the place and soak your stuff. My daily bottle is a Hydro Flask because I want my water to stay very cold. But if I was going on a hike or doing something where I have to carry my bottle, the Nalgene might be preferable because it’s much lighter than a metal bottle

Leakproof & Dishwasher Safe Water Bottles
I love Nalgene! I have like 3. They are so cheap, durable , and really easy to clean. Dishwasher safe and spouts aren’t usually on the same product as the insulated water bottles are almost always painted. Owala seems to be a decent brand, and I think they look nice. I also have an Iron Flash Fahrenheit widemouth that I’ve had for years that has a spout and is insulated, but sticking it in the dishwasher might chip it. Sorry I couldn’t directly answer but hopefully this can help point you in the right direction! 😊

Nalgene are standard and tough. A lot of backpackers like to fill it with hot water at night and sleep with it between their legs on a cold night. I also personally like a non-insulated classic klean kanteen. Durable and if you needed a pot to boil water, this could double as it non-insulated/single wall. Also, if you like the flip top drink like owala, you can replace the klean kanteen standard cap with a flip top straw one.

I love my Nalgene bottles because they also double as warmers when camping! I learned a trick about putting hot water in your Nalgene and then putting the warm bottle with you in your sleeping bag. I did it last year on a camping trip where temps dropped at night, and it kept my sleeping bag nice and toasty 🙂

I've had my plastic Nalgene bottle for ages and I'm sure it'll outlive me. I love that it's lightweight and can be thrown in the dishwasher if I'm too lazy to wash it by hand. About a year ago I got an Owala bottle and it's been fantastic. Keeps stuff cool, is easy to drink from, and doesn't ever leak. I'm not sure if it'll be a buy it for life item but it's held up great with daily use over the last year.

Not necessarily "BIFL", but in terms of convenience, it can be beat: a dedicated bottle washer/sterilizer. We just had a baby. We got a bottle washer/sterilizer and have used it multiple times a day, every day, since the baby was born. Pump parts, bottles, pacifiers, milk catchers - everything goes in and comes out clean and sterilized in time for the next feed. There's no late-night fumbling with bottle brushes, no boiling to sterilize, just load up the washer, add water, and press start. It has saved us so much time and hassle, I tell everyone about it. I think it's the most used baby item outside of the changing table. As for actual long-term items: Bidet attachment for toilets E-reader Water bottles (steel and Nalgene) Quality hand tools (i inherited most of them when I bought my grandparents house. I've used our 50+ year old hand drill to hang shelves when the electric died and it worked perfectly. But we keep an eye out for solid steel/iron tools when antique shopping as well. )

Nalgene big mouth. Bleach em (bleach water mix). Wash them out with fresh water a few times. This bottle will never touch your mouth. You pour it out into any cup. Rei makes one that fits on the bottle, metal, but I don't care if you use a used tomato soup can. Just wash that one too. There are the military canteens (plastic tast takes a while to go away) but they are cheap. Hard to clean. Again. Only water goes in there. Canteen fits on bottom, metal. Not sure on how clean canteen is doing now. I see stacking cups, and the Nalgene cup might work too. See keep your dirty mouth off the canteen.

BIFLers, what things do you not understand why people spend their money on?
At our house, the Stanley’s were 2023-2024. Now it is Owalla or some such thing. The worst part is they (the kids) never want to wash them, they just throw them in the sink for the mythical maid, who might not come every night. And they have multiple parts to wash, etc. I hate them! I use my Nalgene for a a day or 3 between washes, and it goes nicely into the dishwasher when it is time to run it. I’m also not a daily user of a water bottle as I have a soda stream at work.

Anyone have good experiences with glass travel mugs?
I use a hydroflask 40oz stainless steel bottle for water most of the time. It's great. Much nicer drinking out of than plastic. You just need to be a little careful of not dropping it, as stainless steel will dent. The hydroflasks are a durable material but it will dent if you drop it on a hard surface. I have an old one that got dropped a few times on rocks and concrete. The dents aren't terrible, it's still perfectly usable, but just something to keep in mind if that really bothers you. I have a newer one I got a year ago that I've been able to avoid denting so far. For backpacking and long international trips I use tritan Nalgenes though. Lighter weight and more durable.

I bought a Nalgene with a HumanGear cap back in 2016 and went on a lot of adventures with a now-ex. During this time, I covered the bottle with a lot of stickers from our trips, so I decided to retire the bottle and buy another in 2023. I bought a new HumanGear cap to match the color on my new bottle, and the strap on the new one broke ~1 year in. I had to switch back to the one I bought in 2016 and am still using it.

The old HDPE ones are crazy durable. I’ve cracked a new model just dropping them from waist height on concrete. They get brittle with age and taste doesn’t tickle the tism. I stopped buying them, largely because I lose water bottles if I’m not home. I reuse disposables for work. And they fit well in my back pocket. For backpacking I use smartwater bottles. They used to be a gold standard backpacking but today they are considered to be very heavy. However the warranty justifies being BIFL. To add to what OP said. I love the fact that you can drop them and they don’t break/dents. Mine has fallen many times ranging from 3ft to 10 onto concrete and rock and still works as good as the day I got it. Because of their cultish following, a old worn Nalgene can actually be a point of pride.

If you do any camping or the like, they can handle boiling water with no problem at all. They're also really good in terms of not retaining any flavors for the most part depending on the material. and are also BPA-free. The company originally started after their kids were borrowing their lab grade bottles and using it when they went out for hikes. They have been around long enough to make a name for themselves In the bottle market and anything that is an alternative to plastic, smart water, or Poland Spring, or whatever, water bottles is a good thing.

I have a couple of these and they're absolutely worth the money, but I will say that the plastic tether on one has almost completely broken and the other one is starting to go. They're six years old, though, and were under $10 each when I bought them. I'll replace them in a heartbeat when they finally fail altogether, but I'd love to see them connect the cap to the lid with a material that won't break as easily as the thin plastic tether.

Could just be blind dumb luck as well, but the only ones I've ever personally seen break were ones that people had out in the sun for years and then eventually dropped them just the right way and they cracked. I do think there are two different plastics being used now, or they recently switched the naming around, but I'm not 100% on that. Regardless, mine have lasted longer than any of my kids' hydroflasks, or stanlies, or similar, double wall metal bottles. And they're certainly better for the environment than smart water bottles or plastic water containers either way.

I've been using my Nalgene since at least 2008. I can't actually remember when I bought it, it's just sort of always been there. The decal on it rubbed off over time, and I had to replace the lid once, but the bottle itself is rock solid. Easily in the top 1% of oldest, continually used things that I own.

Thin wall - not the double wall vacuum insulted shenanigans - steel without paint. I use a kleen kanteen. The sport cap makes a funny noise but is worth it. As long as the threads aren't dented then it's fine. Mines covered in dents and I only use it for climbing. Otherwise it's nalgenes and Ozark trail mugs at the office. The no paint is just because it can chip, especially climbing.

I don't really care how they look either, but the double-wall vacuum insulated bottles have a very small gap between the outer and inner layers. If you drop it and dent it, you may reduce that gap to zero. If it's zero, the insulation is compromised. So long story short, if you want the awesome insulation properties of those vacuum-insulated bottles, don't get dents. Also, I really hate when my water bottle doesn't sit flat on my desk. Literally every one that I've owned has gotten dented up and doesn't sit flat. That's annoying. So it's not just about looks, it's also about usability. You may not care about those things, but I do. And I'd rather have a cheap Nalgene bottle than a HydroFlask that's not really insulating well anymore and not sitting flat due to dents.

Hahaha you just have to make up a reason. I have one that's 20 years old! Given I had an extended Starbucks cup phase where it saw no use. Recently I found out nalgene has narrow mouth bottles, much easier to drink from in the car or while walking, which felt like a good enough excuse to me! I love it.

Nalgene makes a 38oz stainless steel water bottle that is exactly what you are describing. I have a couple, one of which has been horrendously abused (even used in a fire to boil water occasionally) for over a decade and it still doesn't leak. They are not always available, they make them in maybe one big batch every year, so you will have to watch out for them.

If you prefer stainless steel with no insulation, I have both the Kleen Kanteen and Nalgene. They are both durable but Nalgene's is way thicker and bulkier. For around the house/office I love the Owala FreeSip. I still have a bunch of 32 oz Nalgenes around for camping/hiking when I definitely don’t want the extra weight of the metal. If you go the Nalgene route make sure to get some of the inserts for the wide mouth tops, they make them much easier to deal with. Agree about not worrying about a warranty.

Yeah, they are have not been made from polycarbonate since 2005 or so. The co-polyester is notch sensitive and can crack. I had the same thing happen to me in 2012, they replaced it though!

I do a variety of forestry work. It was on a tree planting contract. Was a hot dry season, all of the berries/food died so the bears were super hungry/agressive/desperate. The bottle though was mundane. The piece I was planting was a 2kmish walk from the road. I had a full nalgene of water at the end of the day, and I decided to save weight on the walk and leave it behind in a box of trees to drink when I returned the next day. Came back the next morning to the tree boxes torn apart, trees scattered everywhere, and nice teeth holes all over the nalgene. The fertilizer on the trees apparently smells good to bears, the nalgene was just an unlucky victim (or maybe he was thirsty lol) 2 days prior though had a more tense standoff with a sick/starving bear, who stalked me for 6-8 hours before coming up behind me when I was kneeling down. Forced him back with a shovel, had a protracted standoff before he backed off and tried to circle behind me again. All turned out well (this piece was near a logging road, and a truck rolled up when he was coming back for round 2). 7 years in forestry/Exploration, was the only somewhat predatory bear i had ever met. He may have been the same one who nabbed my nalgene (although the bear trying to eat me and the bear trying to eat my nalgene were 5-10km away from eachother)

I recently had to warranty claim a 15+ year old Nalgene. I sent pictures, and it was all so easy. I picked the replacement I liked, which was different from my wicked old one because it was out of production. About two weeks later I received an entire case of them! I think it was 6 total.

Yeah I mean Nalgene through and through are solid, I just know from my own anecdotal experience the HDPE number 2s are more durable and the 7s just don't have that flexibility but are still durable. I am guessing they are using Tritan since that's what I read online but again 7 really means it could be anything so your 7s might be completely different from the 7 in the post. I was just handling some of my 7s and that was my theory for why it catastrophically failed. The plastic looks especially rigid in the post. Maybe it's a cheaper blend, that's what I would bet on.

Oh it's no problem, I like researching the specs of the gear I have since I take it out all the time. OP said about 24 inches which is not a great distance but seeing where the bottle is broken it looks like the bottle landed directly on an edge so all that inertia went into a single point. You can still get the durable number 2 bottles they sell them side by side but the cute ones with all the colors and patterns are gonna be the number 7s which are more brittle. I am jealous of your glow in the dark Nalgene those are so rad. I would drop test mine but I live pretty out in the middle of nowhere. Also I noticed if I take people with me they don't like the OG white ones lol. Yeah BPA is crazy durable, I had a Swiss army canteen made of BPE plastic and that thing you could hit with a hammer and it would be fine. I am probably going to get super mega cancer from using it though.

I mean you can feel the difference. The white ones are really spongey feeling, you can compress them, drop them, toss em, and they are fine. The cleaner looking clear ones. I have a bunch of Nalgenes and the white one I am talking about that is near indestructible is made of HDPE Recycle code 2 or High-Density Polyethylene. It is used for it's extremely high impact resistance. The newer cleaner looking Nalgene just says 'BPA free' with recycle code '7'. Which means 'Other'. I did some digging and the number 7 bottles are made of Tritan Renew which is a private company and the plastic blend is a trade secret so who knows what's in it. I know it is atleast 50% recycled plastic. The number 7 bottles are more prone to shattering because they are less flexible, I don't think there was any defect in the bottle it was probably full and dropped on a tiled floor. Nalgene uses both blends of plastic because the number 7 bottles are less prone to staining and retaining odors. I have both kinds of bottles but when I go hiking I only take my HDPE Nalgenes because they are simply way more durable.

I dropped mine off my yop rack in bootcamp several times never cracked. 5 years later it fell off my barely 4 ft bed mostly empty onto soft thick carpet and rug and shattered everywhere. I was devastated they replaced it no issue, i sadly couldnt save any of my stickers.

Nalgene has the best warranty in the business. My kids used to drink from their grip and gulp, and the spouts got all chewed up. Contacted them and explained, could I get new lids? Before I knew it she was asking how many I had and what colours I wanted. We had 9-10, and they were all replaced. Thought it might have changed but just two for cousins and they needed to be replaced and same policy.

These were given out at camp every year and it was a standing challenge for anyone to crack one. Counselors were included, trucks, sledge hammers and axes were employed. In the many years I went there only once did someone manage to damage one, only on the lid with several axe swings.

I once dropped a nearly full one down a 60-ish foot cliff that I was rappelling (alpine trip). When I recovered it, it was slightly leaking from a crack in the lip. The fact that I was surprised that it was leaking, after a fall like that, says a lot about the robustness we have come to expect from of Nalgenes. FWIW, I replaced it with one of their lighterweight versions, the cloudy white HDPE type instead of the usual clear/colored polycarbonate. It also hasn't broken yet, after maybe 8 years.

There are two different types of Nalgene, the original non see through white ones are made of indestructible plastic. The clear and colorful ones are made of a more rigid plastic that is not flexible and prone to break like the one in the picture.

When you go to replace it you want to look for a bottle made from Tritan. It's an impact resistant polyester. Because it isn't a polycarbonate it won't have any bisphenol derivatives. I work in a production plant where we use huge quantities of high purity water. It's held in the system at 90⁰C (~210⁰F). We have to regularly sample the water as it's used, to get it tested for quality in our lab. We sample into Nalgen ½ litre and 1 litre bottles. There's a substantial health and safety assessment behind why we use Nalgene. Short story is that it's the safest option. Glass is glass, and gets too hot as well as too breakable. Metal gets too hot, as well as too expensive. Nalgene is a little insulating, and functionally unbreakable in use. They get dropped all the time and we've never had one burst. The biggest problem is leaving one to cool to room temp before opening it. It creates a vacuum and can be a bugger to get the lid off. They are single use for us, and we throw 3-500 Nalgene bottles in recycling each month. Shame, but we can't afford false failures through reusing them.

Nalgene last forever but the mouth is huge, so is the most popular size 320z. With water its like 5 pounds and doesn't fit in any pockets, bags, cupholder etc. Contigo fits in more places, sartorially and physically. The caps are of soft enough plastic to not count as for life, but the stainless steel bodies are.

I've got several different Yeti drinkware items now, and I love them all. The performance and durability are unmatched, in my opinion. The straw lid has been a game changer for me as well. For budget BIFL, I'd still recommend Nalgene, but if you want something epic that will last forever, Yeti is the way to go.

I did that when trekking in Nepal, and doing so with a clear Nalgene instead of a stainless steel bottle saved me. Apparently, the lodge cook wasn't so careful when filling up their big kettle as it looked like some of the yak dung they use for fuel got in there. Fortunately, I saw it in the morning before drinking it.

I went camping a few years ago and didn't go prepared for the foot of old snow that was on the ground. I didn't have a pot to boil water, as my friends and I were going in to town for food, so I sacrificed an old nalgene to keep my feet warm at night. I filled it to the brim with water and tucked it in next to the fire with the lid off until it was boiling and stuffed it in my sleeping bag two or three nights in a row. The bottle was warped and ruined by the end of it, but it was impressive it held up to that abuse nontheless

As others said nalgene. As a kid we tried breaking 1 on a rock as we heard it was impossible. We were unable to break it. My Nalgene is probably 10+ years old and the lid is still good too

I fill my Nalgene bottle three times a day. So that’s six single use plastic bottles a day I save. I’ve been using this particular bottle now for about 4 years. Mathing that out real quick means I’ve saved roughly 8760 single use .5L plastic bottles from being disposed of, which as we know, are a worse plastic for ya. Not all plastic is the same mate. Just look at GE’s plastic house they had to tear down in Pittsfield MA that was leeching cancerous fumes into the air inside and around it. My Nalgene doesn’t do what that GE house did.

I've got a couple Nalgene bottles that I've been using since 1999, that's pretty long. Klean Kanteen is really good too, but those gaskets in the lids do need to be replaced eventually.

Seconding Nalgene. I've been using the same widemouth model daily since 2012. I've traveled internationally with it, dropped it a lot, lost it on public transit a few times and gotten it back, and it's going with 0 leaks.

I've been using a Thermo Flask for 8-9yrs. It's 500mL and for kids lol I used to use Nalgene and Contigos but have dropped them enough I've cracked the bottles. If you have a good grip they're good as long as they don't have a valve in the lid.

I had a 20 year old electric kettle that I cleaned and donated recently because I received a new one as a gift. A Nalgene I’ve used for twenty+ years. The first 10 years it was a daily driver. A winter weight faux fur comforter from 1999. My mom gave me a stern lecture about if I’d really want it for a long time because it was from the 90s cheetah era and I was known for being mercurial. I pull it out every winter. Husband wanted me to get rid of it, and then one winter he was sick and took a nap with it and was won over. Probably an old bed bath and beyond clearance item. Now that I’m thinking about it, I have a lot of things from the 1999-2004 era, surprisingly.

What's the oldest item you still use daily that has withstood the test of time, and what's its story?
Nalgene, had it for 6 years. Hundreds of miles backpacking, a thousand being dragged behind my boat on the salmon river. Every gym workout, drink mix combo. Pour boiling water into it and use it as a sleeping bag heater. Did have to get a replacement lid, Nalgene replaced the whole bottle for free. I still have it and use it over the newer ones cause it’s got battle scars.

I still have and use the Nalgene bottle that I bought my freshman year of college back in 2001. Most of the lettering has worn off the side and the original cap has been replaced, but the bottle is still going strong. It travels with me around the world a few times in the Navy and survived to tell the tale!

I am a water snob, and so the only home filter I like is the Pur 3-layer filters, but I like ice cold water, so - I have 4 crystal clear 1 quart narrow mouth bottles that I fill with water and have refrigerated at all times. I know it's not your answer, I just wanted to say - the narrow mouth nalgenes are great - and the clear ones are good to see any impurities and you can easily see if they are clean. They do make them in "clear" - they're not as popular but they are great. Have you tried a camelbak water bottle? The body is the same material as nalgeens, but they are much thinner. They have a nipple you gently bite to open, which takes some getting used to, but are very convenient in the end because you can drink while moving w/o unscrewing a cap or risking a spill. I think Nalgeen also makes replacement tops with a traditional sport-style nipple if the wide-mouthed caps bother you. But I suggest a camelbak in some shade of blue (I personally find myself drinking more when the bottle is blue)

Californian here who is not a commie. Nalgene bottles are really the only way to go. They will handle the heat of coffee, and the cold of an iced drink and not melt, spindle, bind, bend, break, or buckle. Mine has fallen off the car at 40MPH and still been good (though badly scuffed). I have bought imitations before, and they have all failed. Nalgene or nothing!

I love my LDPE Nalgene. It's 32oz and narrow mouth, and uses the original "frosted" clear plastic. It has never leaked. For your purposes, a 16oz LDPE Nalgene would be great. Mine's been thrown around and abused for a while, and doesn't show much wear. I don't like the newer Tritan Nalgenes for the sole reason that they don't flex. Mine is perfect for me, and I throw it in my bag with electronics every day. Doesn't attract much attention, either!

If you're buying it for daily use, go for the narrow mouth. The wide mouth I have has a habit of dripping a little bit of water onto me from the cap. Not a deal breaker, still use it everyday, just an annoyance.
