Yep, I can make a better espresso in my Nespresso than any chain cafe. And there are reusable pods if you want make your own, although you will need a decent grinder. Haven't done the maths on how long it takes to recoup the expense of the pods+grinder but suspect with my coffee habit it would be less than a year :)

I’ll get flamed for this because it’s not BIFL, nor is it coveted in the coffee community. But espresso is not a cheap hobby… But if you like just regular espresso pulls you really can’t go wrong with a basic original line Nespresso. The shot is actually very decent - We’ve had our esenza mini for a decade and it’s been excellent. Just keep up on descaling.

I think the closest thing may be a "B Corporation". They focus on sustainability vs profit maximization. Think Patagonia, Nespresso, and Ben & Jerry's. The problem with these frothers is that the stem is very thin and will eventually and unavoidably bend, even just a bit and once that happens the whole thing just shakes and doesn't work as good anymore. If you want a BIFL look at electric cup frothers like the Aerochinno from Nespresso.

i'd recommend looking at facebook marketplace for a robot vaccuum! people are always selling good models there for so much cheaper, i think because many want to upgrade to the newest models, but the used one that i have works great. if you want a fast option for coffee in the morning, i've really enjoyed using my nespresso. I just pop in the pod and add creamer, and then I have a delicious latte. pods are like $1.50 each and they recycle them for free; much better than Keurigs, and faster than getting an espresso machine and learning all the ins & outs of those!

I always suggest people get a classic instead of vertuo. The only reason they came out with the vertuo is because their pod patent ran out. We have been using a small Nespresso machine without all the bells and whistles for a decade. And the Pods we buy on Amazon work out to about 30 cents a cup.

I have an older Citiz with milk frother and have used it every single day for the last 16 years and it has never had an issue. I don’t even clean the coffee part. I had to replace the frother 10 years ago because someone ran it through the dishwasher. I buy the lavazza pods on amazon: 25$ for 60. That said *doing calculations* maybe I should get a proper espresso machine and ditch the pod life. Originally it was a move to spend less money and time at Starbucks. Spending 750$ per year on pods might not be great in the long run.

Hi there! Not speaking from machine knowledge but from my experience making a coffee every morning with my machine. I have the Nespresso Vertuo Pop+ and I love it so much I bought it twice. Not because it broke - I moved and could only take limited things. It’s perfect for my husband and I. He prefers a shot of espresso or brewed cup no cream and sugar and I love smooth lattes with the option for flavors. The machine covers our different preferences at a very approachable price point in my opinion and it’s never broken down or lost quality once in 6 years of owning the first machine. In fact that first vertuo pop is still making great coffee for another family friend that took the machine. I’ve also owned the original line prior to the vertuo. Today, I would still probably go with the Pop+. Again, it just does everything we need it to in a simple way. Hope this helps!

The original line would be the best Nespresso option, especially since you are no longer locked to Nespresso branded pods. The long run would be better to have an actual espresso machine though. Even a cheaper superauto would probably be better vs a pod machine and pays for itself vs going out and/or buying pods.

The dolce gusto and nespresso machines are imo very well made and if you can get them on second hand markets I believe they will last a long time, not sure about bifl. I got an dg circolo more than 10 Yr ago for about $35 on a local second hand platform and its still going. Use it about 4 times a week. Best part is you can get an adapter and also use it with nespresso pods and the compatibles. A second hand inniskilling or essenza can also be had foe about $70 or so if you just want to stick with first gen nespresso. There are also some machines that do three or more pod types now - hibrew has machines that do dg, nespresso ( the old ones) and k-cups. I don't know about the build of these machines but they are not expensive.

I know that I'm never again buying Nespresso Vertuo. I think it's overengineered with a single purpose - to patent a brewing system and exclude capsules from free producers. Nespresso Original, however, ticks all your boxes. I have one, which is 20 years old. Easy to learn (just drop a capsule in) and lots of great choices available. You get espresso though, so if that's not your cup of coffee, then go for Moccamaster.. I mean, everybody hates and wants to boycot Nestle, but you don't have to buy coffee from them, there are lots of great taste options available from indepe dent makers, even from.supermarket own brands.

I see a lot of Contigo travel mugs like this at the thrift store. Just popularity or are they problematic?
Have you tried the Nespresso flasks? They have a really unique lid mechanism that has a middle puck you press that basically allows you to drink from any angle. It cleans easy in the dishwasher and has a plastic outside and stainless inside so it resists dents and the drinks stay hot/cold. I can’t recommend them enough.

Purchased a Breville Nespresso Vertuo machine shortly before the pandemic for less than $200. It has saved me soooo much money on grabbing coffee on-the-go. Do you need a whole pot? Nespresso is like 100 bucks and the vertuo ones make espresso and coffee. Strong good cups too. Otherwise, a ninja drip coffee maker was good to me for awhile. I see the pour over and French press recommendations, both a pain in the ass for a morally and maybe no different cup than a machine drip. If you like the process and the routine then absolutely go for pour over or French press. Otherwise all drip and pour over coffee is pretty similar assuming you have good grounds and don’t have the cheapest shittiest coffee maker.

If you want easy and BIFL, get a nespresso pixie and one of their milk frothers. If you are going to get a semi-auto machine and grinder - keep in mind that its a hobby and it will be 6-8 months before you start pulling the kind of shots that you're proud of. Gaggia Classic, Profitec, Rancilio, Rocket, maybe Breville here. For grinder - Bartaza Virtuoso or Vario. On the fully auto side, Jura will probs be just outside your price range. Terra Kaffe TK-02 is. I own one (was a gift) and its fine but probably not BIFL.

If you want great espresso for the cheapest price get an aeropress. If you want great espresso and an easy experience where you don’t work hard get a Nespresso. If you want great espresso and you want to spend $1000 and work hard get an espresso machine (don’t know why most homeowners would get this) If you want something in between espresso and drip get a moka pot If you want great brew coffee with zero effort get a French press. If you want great brew coffee with the easiest cleanup get a single mug pour over filter. If you want strong but small coffee get a jazve/middle eastern coffee pot (there is coffee grind at the bottom of your brew so you stop drinking at the end) also easy to wash and clean.

Time permitting, I have a Breville, but for a quick shot (or 2 or 3...), I use my Nespresso Vertuo. I don't do a lot of espresso because of the serving size. I usually drink 15-20 oz. of coffee at a time. Since your retooling equipment, I might suggest you give Bialetti a try first before you go for a high end machine. I have four of them in different sizes, but the 9 size is the best for my needs. It would also give you the option of branching out into ground coffee blends. They are inexpensive and easy to maintain, just don't put them in the dishwasher. Remember, "Anything worth doing is worth doing to excess."

It is... super easy. Even the most expensive limited whatever Edition is affordable. No waste, no hassle, it's won't break and is for life. Same for standard black coffee with a French Press. My MIL got a huge machine for thousands of euros, they need a lot of care, high maintenance, can't be repaired by yourself. And everything else eg Nespresso can also stop working, needs maintenance and despite the trash it's utterly expensive, like 80$ per kg of coffee.

Not really a BIFL item but the Nespresso Aeroccino 4 is highly recommended by r/superautomatic (as most built in steam frothers are a pain in the ass and subpar), I have the aeroccino 3 and it works better than anything else I’ve tried and the 4 improves on the design. It’s made in china, and I doubt it’s bifl, but mine gets used daily for 3 years so far.
